After pulling up in front of the house Nick struggled to shake off the bone-deep exhaustion that had taken residence in her. Slamming the door of the truck, she climbed the steps towards her house.

The neighborhood around felt off. Birds continued their merry chirps and cars continued to drone up and down the street, yet something felt off, felt wrong. The door creaked open yet the living room was the same as it was that morning, with no sign of disturbance.

Venturing inside, her unease still refused to calm itself. Turning her focus towards the coffee machine, she entered a kenco coffee pod inside and waited. The house was silent. Her roommate Juliette was away for a week on a veterinary training course so the eerie silence dragged on. The only noise came from the machine that sounded as if it were to spontaneously combust any minute.

Sitting down with her mug (a photo of her and the precinct on the day she passed her detective exam) her thoughts wandered towards the life she had stumbled into. All it took was her aunt to show up with an airstream trailer and the life she thought she understood was gone in an instant. Then her aunt was gone just as quick. Left alone she had found it hard to operate both lives at once, a feat she still struggled with a year later.

As she stood up, blinding white pain gathered behind her eyes, leaving her gasping for breath as she collapsed into an undignified heap onto the floor. She lay there for a few minutes, hopelessly trying to get harsh breaths under tight control. Just as fierce as before, the pain returned until she found herself slipping into an ebony cocoon of darkness. "Will someone make it stop." She thought into the distance.
