A/N: I wasn't expecting to write a second chapter, but… here you go.

Two stacks of paper sat on the table on either side of the girl. They were torn at the edges, roughly hewn into crude rectangles. The ones on the right were colored. There were two crayons. The black one was rocking slightly next to the colored pile, and the red one was in the girl's hand. She was drawing the third of five diamonds on the paper in front of her.

The cards weren't very well made, but that was to be expected. She had no scissors, no ruler; she'd had to tear some blank pages out of her notebook for materials. She had reinvented the faces of the Kings and the Queens and the Jacks because she couldn't remember what they looked like; the Jokers had been forgotten completely.

She'd never really thought about playing cards before, but learning was a godsend. She didn't know why he had talked to her, except that maybe he was as bored as she was. There was nothing to do in the castle, and when she ran out of paper, or crayons, or her hand hurt, or she just didn't feel like drawing, there was no entertainment at all.

But now she could play cards. She'd watched him playing solitaire before he'd asked her to join him in a game. He had played for hours, and she had watched. She had memorized the patterns, the rules; all she needed was a proper deck. She would have to make due.

He had given her the better half of the gift, anyway.
