The one thing Leia knew for sure about this whole ordeal was that Han would not appreciate a party. He had told her, shortly after they were engaged, that their wedding and reception were the one time he would ever consider celebrating their relationship with other people, and even that was pushing it.
The wedding had been beautiful and elegant. Han had lived up to his promise and was on his best behavior, but he was deeply compensated for it later while in private. So even though there was no party planned for the future, and that she didn't know what she was going to do, she knew she wanted to trick him into thinking that a huge party was what she was planning.
It was a complicated, but necessary process Leia had to undergo in order to ensure that her husband would not find out what she was up to. She did, however, have the added benefit of being able to torment him slightly in the process. She considered it a little payback for all the times he had teased her. He would worry about a party, but would not be able to say anything because he wouldn't want to disappoint her.
She thought that if she was as obvious as she could be without being blatant, then he wouldn't even bother to investigate further.
That night she sat in her office waiting to time her order of invitations for a party one of her friends was throwing for her child, for when Han would come home and hear her. She had been granted this opportunity earlier that morning when the woman had asked for a good place to order from. Leia had offered so determinedly to place the order that the woman could not have refused otherwise. Han had no way of knowing that the party was being held for someone else, and if she used the exact right wording, she would be able to alarm him without lying.
Hearing the click of the door open, she quickly dialed.
"Hello? Yes, this is Leia Organa-Solo and I want to place an order for a large amount of invitations."
At this moment, Han made his way into the office and gave her a quizzical look.
Ok, here we go, don't mess this up, she thought to herself. Taking a deep but controlled breath, Leia blew him a kiss in acknowledgment, and looking as suspicious as she could muster, continued on.
"Yes, I want them to read exactly as follows. 'We-invite-you-to-celebrate-one-of-the-biggest-moments-we-experience-in-our-lives. After-two-years-we-cannot-believe-how-fast-the-time-has-gone-already. Be-prepared-to-put-your-party-shoes-on-and-CELEBRATE!'"
The entire thing was almost too perfect for Leia to leave her false trail. She didn't believe the woman at first when she said her child was turning two. And the ridiculousness of the invitation was only added fuel, when Leia looked up and saw Han's horrified reaction at her words. She simply gave him a big grin and a wink, and hung up the phone.
Now standing up, Leia made her way closer to Han, trying her hardest to swallow the giggles that yearned to escape. He stood stock still and his face was reddening by the minute.
"Sweetheart, what's wrong?" Leia gave her best impression of her husband. "You look like you've been spending too much time in the Tatooine sun."
Han still couldn't speak and as he tried to formulate his words, Leia could almost see his mind bursting. She was enjoying this a little too much. Feeling only the tiniest bit guilty, but mostly proud of herself for pulling off her maneuver so successfully, she reached up to kiss him as fully as she could, being so much shorter than him.
"Han?" He simply nodded. "Han, sweetheart. You're not doing anything next weekend are you?"
Leia broke out her sweet voice only when she wanted to be the most irritating.
"N-next weekend?" Han gave an involuntary shudder. "Isn't next weekend our, um, anniversary? Our second anniversary." He emphasized the word "second" so intensely, Leia almost broke then.
She opened her eyes as wide as possible and said, "Oh, is it? That's right! Next weekend is our second wedding anniversary. Wow! Two years! Can you believe it? We better prepare to put our party shoes on and CELEBRATE!"
Kissing him on the cheek, Leia pushed past him and swaggered out of the office. Han was always the one to tease her, that it just felt so wonderful to finally turn the tables on him.
She didn't quite know whether to be offended that he so easily accepted such an obvious attempt at lying, but her small victory was too strong to soil the moment.
Leia reached up as high as she could to the cabinets in the kitchen in order to get to the highest shelf. She pulled out a glass and hummed chirpily as she poured herself a large quantity of wine, feeling as though she really deserved it for her stealthy work.
She took a moment to glance out into the hallway and saw that Han was still standing where she left him, shaking his head and muttering wildly to himself. Laughing, she took a swill of her wine.
And then it hit her. Just as obvious and plain as the day she realized she loved him. She knew what she wanted to do for Han on their anniversary, she just didn't know how the hell she was going to pull it off.
