"What do you mean 'gone'?" shouted Cyborg as he and the others all crowded Starfire.
"She is no longer there," answered Starfire sadly. "We have checked the entire room and can find no trace of Apollo. She has left the tower." Intent on seeing this for themselves, Cyborg, Beast Boy and Raven followed Starfire to Apollo's room at the end of the hall. The door had been left wide open and the lights were turned on. Upon entering, everyone stared at the open drawers and closet doors of the furniture as they watched Robin frantically searching the room for Apollo or any signs that she may still be in the tower.
"Yo, Robin," shouted Cyborg in an attempt to get his friend's attention. "What are-"
"I should've known," Robin muttered under his breath as he continued to tear the room apart. "People don't just leave; why did I tell her to wait here⦠alone?" He asked himself, recounting everything that had already happened the first three times, Apollo had been separated from the rest of the team.
"Dude, how often does this girl disappear!" shouted Beast Boy as he and the others began to walk around the room, looking at the items that Apollo had left behind. "You'd think she was invisible."
"The girl's a trained spy," commented Cyborg.
"Disappearing isn't a problem," added Raven as she walked with Starfire towards the large desk in the far corner of the room. There were two opened drawers filled with random papers, and an open portfolio and marker on the desk. Noticing the random and ambiguous marks on the partially revealed pages, Starfire removed some of the papers from the portfolio and began looking through them while Raven studied the papers in the drawers.
"Maybe she was kidnapped," suggested Beast Boy as he and Cyborg scanned the room. "She did say that Red X was the one who took her back at the bank."
"I don't think so," answered Cyborg as he stopped in front of the large glass window-wall looking out on the ocean. "There's no point of break-in. Besides," he paused and turned to study the large dent in the wall. Stunned, he and Beast Boy stared at the crumbling drywall and paint chips. "Apollo's a tough girl; she can take care of herself; as we've clearly seen the last few days."
Picking up on the snide tone in Cyborg's last statement, Robin dropped what he was doing and confronted his friend-turned-critic. "What's that supposed to mean?" he asked apprehensively.
"I'm just saying, Apollo's made it clear that she prefers to go it alone. It's a lot easier to take care of business when you don't have people around you getting in the way-"
"You mean judging and watching your every move!" Robin shouted. "What is it with you lately? Ever since Apollo joined the team, it seems like all you've done is try to find something wrong with her; like you don't want her on the team." Slowly everyone else stopped what they were doing and- validating Robin's remark- stared at the two boys waiting for a response. "What did she do to make you hate her so much! What's up with you?"
"What's up with me!" shouted Cyborg, astonished by his friends behavior. "What's up with you! Not long ago the only thing that was on your mind was Slade. How to find him, figure out what he was planning, who he was; you were even working for the guy for a while!" Everyone continued to listen in disbelief at the argument.
"I had no choice! I was doing it to-"
"Oh really," scoffed Cyborg. "There definately was a time when you easily could've walked away, isn't that right 'Red X'?" Unable to respond to the damning statement, Robin stared at Cyborg, angrily gritting his teeth. "Next thing you know, it's like none of that ever happened- like the man doesn't even exist! Then out of nowhere you let the guy's daughter join the team! And you wanna know what's wrong with me!" The two boys continued to argue for a moment before Raven finally managed to silence the bout.
"Enough!" she shouted as she closed the drawers and walked away from the desk. "This is pointless; we're all forgetting the real issue: Apollo's gone and according to her there's still a rogue thief at large."
"Uh, I think her name was 'Rouge'," interjected Beast Boy- clearly at the wrong moment.
"Either way," sighed Raven, quickly shooting Beast Boy an irritated 'shut up' glance. "Standing here fighting about things isn't going help. What good is arguing going to do us if the people we're fighting about are still out there?" she continued, pointing out the window to the city.
"Raven is right," added Starfire as she approached the team, still carrying several of the papers in her hand. Once in the middle of the crowd she calmly passed the pages around to her friends.
"What are these?" asked Beast Boy as he took one of the papers from the stack.
"These are the drawings that Apollo had with her that day in the training room," she picked out a particular drawing and handed it to Robin- the sapphire ring. Holding the paper in his hand, Robin studied the image, then looked up at Starfire and his team.
"Well, at least now we know what she does in here all day," commented Raven in her usual monotone. She then cracked a sarcastic smile as she held up her pages revealing two battered and worn pieces of paper with Beast Boy and Cyborg's faces on them; both boys grudgingly stared at the pages.
"I'll give her this," sighed Cyborg as he showed everyone the image on his paper. "The girl's good." He then handed his page to Robin, revealing an image of Red X surrounded by cases of jewelry. Upon seeing it, a fixed expression of anger struck Robin's face. "Next to that ring, this is the most detailed image she made." Focused, Robin continued to stare down at the drawing. His eyes fixed on the black-suited thief surrounded by cases of diamonds and gems; only the sound of Starfire's voice could break his concentration.
"And what about this one?" she asked, holding up an illustration of an ominous black figure. Puzzled, everyone surrounded the drawing, staring at the oddly shaped, faceless black image.
"Maybe it's one of her first drawings," suggested Beast Boy. "I mean, she still has a mind-controlled bracelet from when she was six."
Skeptical, Raven took the drawing and looked over it herself, "I don't think so, it looks pretty recent." She slowly ran her hand over the oddly haunting black image- tracing its lines with her fingers. "I'll bet this is the creature Apollo said she saw in the armory." Immediately, everyone's expressions changed from confusion to realization as they remembered Apollo's testimony of her encounter with a mysterious black 'thing' in the arsenal. Now that they had the image to help credit her claim, the team began to reconsider their previous opinions about their missing teammate.
Finally after studying the papers a moment longer, Robin threw the images on the ground and began walking toward the door. "Where are you going?" asked Starfire as she and the others began to follow him out.
"We have to find her," Robin replied in his usual deep tone. "Cyborg, see if you can pick up a signal from hercommunicator. She has to be-" suddenly their leaders commands were cut short as he passed by the desk and noticed another drawing that had been left on the table. However, it was the object that had been left on top of the paper that seemed to have captured his attention. Staring down at the desk, he quickly snatched up the yellow Teen Titans communicator that had somehow managed to go unnoticed during their search. As Robin continued to clutch the device in his hand, Raven slowly drifted toward him and saw the fury in his eyes. As she continued to study his expression, Raven was easily able to tell exactly what was running through his mind. It was obvious that he was angry, but not at Apollo, Red X, Cyborg or whoever else had managed to remain unidentified in this caper, he was angry at himself- for not listening, not believing, not trusting her; for allowing her to leave and unknowingly chasing her away. Before anyone could even ask if he was okay, the communicator had been hurled to floor and Robin had already sped out of the room.
"Robin where are you-"
"Start looking for her! Scan the city, she couldn't have gotten far," Robin commanded as he made his way to the garage. "I'll be back with her soon."
