Witchy Woman
Which Witch?
When Bella woke up the next morning, she noticed two things. First, she realized that there was no one in the house. This didn't bother her as much as it should have, but she decided to contemplate that later. Secondly and most importantly, she also noticed something foreign in her mind. She could feel the touch of some other being brushing up against her. She wasn't sure what to do. Should she reach out to it, to see what it was? It didn't feel malevolent, but she couldn't be sure.
Reaching out with her mind, she slowly yet firmly, touched the unfamiliar presence. All at once she was hit with many images, too many images for her to process. As she quickly recoiled in her mind from the onslaught of, what she assumed were memories, she saw her house. More specifically, she saw her own window from the outside, and she felt the odd need to scurry up a tree and find some nuts.
Looking out the window, her suspicions were confirmed as her gaze came to rest upon a squirrel looking directly at her.
Mind racing, she stumbled over to the closet and threw on the first things she found. Looking in the mirror, she laughed briefly at the irony of her outfit being similar to DG's outfit in Tin Man.
She walked downstairs, turning over the idea that she could read minds. By the time she grabbed a cereal bar she came to the conclusion that she would confront Charlie later that night. Spotting something out of the corner of her eye, Bella walked over to the table and found two keys on a key ring and a letter from Charlie.
Bells,
Sorry I wasn't there for your first day of classes, I got called in to work because of an emergency. I've left you two keys, one for the house, and one for the truck outside. Billy (you remember Billy Black) lent us his old truck. It's nothing special, but it runs. One more thing, be careful today Bells, I haven't had a chance to tell you but we aren't the only
And that was where it ended. We aren't the only WHAT?? Bella hated not knowing things, especially considering Charlie was warning her to be careful. What could he possibly have been writing, we aren't the only … witches? Was that it? She wasn't sure if that made her scared or excited. The possibility of there being other witches in this small town that she was living in was monumental. For awhile during her childhood, Bella had wondered if there were any other witches out there.
Deciding she didn't need any more time to get ready, Bella grabbed her jacket and keys and went outside to find her new "truck." Heading out the door she saw that Charlie was right, it wasn't anything special. It was an old pickup truck, probably from the sixties; the paint (or what was left of it) was a faded blue color.
Bella knew nothing of cars and, to her knowledge, Charlie didn't either. Climbing into the cab she prayed that this clunker would get her to school. Turning the key in the ignition, she was elated when the car actually started. The truck couldn't go very fast, but that suited Bella, she wasn't a fast, thrill kind of girl. Trudging along down the highway, she took in all the scenery. Well, actually, all she saw was trees. She would have to get used to all this green, she sympathized with Kermit for a few seconds; it wasn't easy being green.
Pulling into the parking lot of the school, Bella noticed that there weren't any cars there. Looking at her watch, she saw that she was quite early. Taking out her worn copy of Wuthering Heights, she resigned herself to reading for a bit.
My human fixture and her satellites rushed to welcome me; exclaiming, tumultuously, they had completely given me up: everybody conjectured that I had perished last night; and they were wondering how they must set about the search for my remains. I bid them be quiet now that they saw me returned, and, benumbed to my very heart, I dragged upstairs; whence, after putting on dry clothes, and pacing to and fro thirty or forty times, to restore the animal heat, I adjourned to my study, feeble as a kitten: almost too much so to enjoy the cheerful fire and smoking coffee which the servant had prepared for my refreshment.
Reaching the end of the third chapter Bella, felt something odd. She looked up to see that most of the school was there. She tried to find where the oddness was coming from, but, ironically, there were too many people there. Scrambling out of the car Bella took off towards the main office to get her schedule.
Once inside the building, she walked up to the desk where there was a woman reading a book. She peeked over her glasses and said "Can I help you?"
"Yes, I'm Isabella Swan and I'm new here, do you have my schedule?"
"Oh, you're the chief's daughter; we heard you were coming in soon." She handed me two sheets of paper. "Here is your schedule and a map of the school." She then handed me a few slips. "Get these signed by your teachers," She said "and then bring them back here at the end of the day."
Nodding her head in thanks, Bella backed out of the office and looked over her schedule to see where she was going.
As Bella was looking at her map, a boy her age came up to her.
"Are you Isabella Swan?" he asked.
Without looking up she immediately corrected him. "It's Bella." Realizing she was being rude, Bella looked up to see a greasy-haired boy wearing glasses looking at her.
"My name's Eric" the boy said. Looking over her shoulder he commented, "Oh you have Spanish first class with me. I can show you where it is."
Bella followed the boy named Eric, unwillingly, and the conversation between the two was awkward and forced, on Bella's side at least. She was grateful when the teacher came in, even though it meant she needed to introduce herself.
After having the teacher sign her slip Bella went to sit down, coincidentally, far from Eric. She settled down in her chair, thinking that this was going to be a long day.
At the end of the period, before she could make her escape, the boy named Eric cornered her and asked her what her next class was. Seeing how his face fell when she said she had math next, Bella rejoiced internally. She couldn't however, escape him between class as he took her to her next class.
In math she sat next to a girl named Jessica who seemed friendly enough, if not slightly superficial. Then in English she was with Jessica again, who introduced her to a boy named Mike. Bella tried to remember the names and faces, but she had a feeling that she wouldn't remember them for long.
Her other classes were uneventful, and she still couldn't figure out where the weird energy was coming from.
When she walked to lunch with Jessica and Mike who were chatting away, she felt the feeling grow stronger, that something was off. Sitting down at a table with a few other friends of Mike and Jessica's she attempted to find where it was coming from. It didn't take long.
Sitting at a table by themselves, were five utterly gorgeous "people." She knew there was something inhuman about them, it was obvious, from their pale skin to the aura around them to the way they sat as still as a statue. There were three boys and two girls. All five of them were looking down at the table, playing with their food without actually eating anything. One of the girls was small, had pixyish hair and sharp features. The other girl was a blonde who would make supermodels jealous, she was perfect. Another of the boys had light brown short hair, and was practically a hulk. He was extremely muscular and not the kind of guy anyone would mess with. The second boy was smaller, yet still muscular. He had short dark hair and seemed to be the only one who was capable of an expression other than indifference. The last boy … was the best looking of them all. He had messy auburn hair and a boyish look to him. He was thinner than the other two, yet still very muscular.
As Bella looked at the boy with the auburn hair, he suddenly looked up at her. He wore a curious expression. Embarrassed at being caught staring, Bella looked down and blushed, consciously keeping her emotions in check. Curious herself Bella decided to try out her newest power. Closing her eyes and stretching out her mind, she brushed up against the young boys mind. She was hit with tons of pictures. Most of which didn't make sense, but she could tell that, though he had an enormous amount of memories of his own, he also had other peoples' memories in his mind.
Completely baffled, Bella looked up to find a mousy girl staring at her. She vaguely remembered being told her name, but couldn't recall it. Deciding to do some investigating, she asked the girl, "Who are they?" while tilting her head in the direction of the table with the five statues.
Having overheard the question, Jessica answered, "Those are the Cullens. They were all adopted by Dr. Cullen who works in the Forks hospital, he's something of a genius with medicine. The dark haired boy and the blonde are brother and sister, Jasper Hale and Rosalie Hale. The other three are also siblings, the girl with the dark hair is Alice, the boy with the light hair is Emmett, and the other one is Edward."
Edward, Bella thought, even his name is perfect.
"They are also couples, Rosalie and Emmett, and Jasper and Alice. Edwards alone, but don't bother, he isn't interested in anyone." Jessica sniffed. Bella could tell that she knew that from experience. Obviously she was rejected, Bella thought with a slight smile. Looking back at the table, she saw that the boy, Edward, was looking at her again. It unnerved her slightly, but she found she couldn't look away. His eyes were the color of amber, like a swirling fire, and they pulled her in until she couldn't think, couldn't breathe.
Suddenly Bella was jostled by someone at the table, signifying that lunch was over. As she walked to her next class, she noticed that the meals the Cullens threw out hadn't been touched.
When she entered the Biology class, she immediately noticed that Edward was in this class. As she walked up to the teacher and handed him her slip, she noticed that Edward gave her a sad, almost patronizing smile. She realized why as the teacher introduced her to the class, the seat next to him was the only one free.
Bella walked down the aisle to where the table was, and as luck would have it, she tripped. Picking herself back up, she looked toward Edward and was shocked. His face had contorted to a look of pure hatred and anger. He was still beautiful, but dangerously so. The thing that struck her most was his eyes; she could have sworn they were amber in the lunch room, now they were black as coal. She had never seen anyone with eyes as black as his. Sitting on her stool, she noticed he had his body angled as far away from her as possible, as his nostrils flared and he gripped the table and seat beneath him. He was holding so tight, she was half afraid he would break it.
She tried to keep herself together for the whole class, keeping her emotions from running wild. Maybe she wouldn't see him in any other classes. She wasn't sure if that thought made her happy or disappointed. Creating a barrier between them with her hair, she wondered if she smelt bad. Sniffing her hair discreetly, she only smelled her strawberry shampoo, as she had just taken a shower last night.
Biology couldn't have been slower. Every minute she checked the clock waiting to make her escape. When the bell finally rang, Edward shot out of his seat and was out the door before she could gather her things.
Deciding to forget about it, Bella walked to gym and exulted in the fact that she didn't bring gym clothes, it meant she could sit out for the day and avoid a major catastrophe.
When the last bell rang, Bella walked back to the main office to hand in her slips. The second she opened the door, whoever was standing in front of the receptionist stiffened. She realized with some shock that it was Edward.
"I can see that is not possible. Thank you." He said tersely to the dazed looking receptionist and stormed out of the office as fast as he could. Bella couldn't imagine someone hating her that much, especially after knowing them for only one day.
She quietly handed the receptionist her slips and went back to her truck to go home. Turning the key in the ignition, Bella contemplated what to do now; if there was anything to do know. She knew that Charlie had a lot of explaining to do. How could he not have told her about the Cullens? What were they? And why did Edward Cullen hate her so much? She knew she would have to corner Charlie tonight to get some answers out of him and she would get those answers, no matter what.
A/N: Just so you know, the Wuthering Heights passage has nothing to do with the plot. I know stephenie meyer puts a lot of foreshadowing in her books, but I try not to be that obvious. It was just how far I think Bella would have gotten if she had read the book for 15 minutes or so.
