A/N: Kudos to SilverWolf in a SapphireNight, FyreTwilighter, kitsune2477, Kris88, marli-chan, Joykohl and those of you who knew it was beetlejuice. Okay to clear things up, the necromancer serves three distinct purposes. He's the replacement for the guys in Port Angeles, but more importantly, anyone who has an enormous amount of power never goes unchallenged, it would be boring and unrealistic otherwise. Also, necromancers control dead spirits, so he puts Edward in danger. And … on to the story.

Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of the Twilight saga (the last book wouldn't have been as disappointing if I did, no offense to Steph)

Witchy Woman

A Girls Mind

Last Chapter:

"What do you want?" Bella asked willing her voice to be strong and not as frightened as she felt.

"Your powers." The necromancer stated smiling a cruel smile. "And to get them, you must die." And with that the necromancer started advancing on her brandishing an athame at her.

Bella was once again frozen in fear. No! She screamed at herself, I won't let this happen again! And with that she was able to briefly shake herself out of her frozen state. Not even registering the squeal of tire on asphalt, Bella concentrated hard, squinted her eyes and flung the necromancer into the opposite wall.

Bella turned to run away and was confronted with Edward's angry face.

Oh shit!

"Edward, get out of here!" Bella all but screamed. She pushed at Edward ineffectually.

"Who is that and why is he trying to kill you?" Edward growled at her, taking an offensive stance. He didn't seem to notice Bella trying to stop him.

Looking behind him, Bella spotted his Volvo. "Please just get in the car, I'll explain everything." Bella pleaded with him and once again tried to push him backwards. She turned back to look towards the necromancer. He was starting to get up. Bella gathered all her strength and flung his head back against the brick wall.

Edward's eyes widened to the size of saucers and he almost didn't catch Bella as she fainted from her exertion. Groaning as he realized he couldn't fight with Bella unconscious, Edward placed Bella in the passenger seat and drove off at breakneck speed.

"What was that?" Edward asked darkly, his expression unreadable.

"That was a necromancer, he controls dead spirits. It's a good thing we got out of there when we did or else he could have used you to attack me." Bella said trying to appear calm, but her voice belied her worry.

Edward was silent for a minute, intent on the road, then he said, "That's not what I meant; how did you fling him across the street?" And almost as an afterthought he added, "And how could he have used me to attack you?"

"He has control over dead spirits, you're dead; what don't you understand?"

"You didn't answer my first question. And I'm not dead, I'm sitting right here." Edward answered not once looking at Bella.

"I'll tell you if you'll stop the car for a moment so we can talk."

Edward pulled the car into an empty parking lot and turned towards Bella. "We can't stay here long; you're not safe with me."

"You're not a threat to me." Bella's voice became softer, willing him to understand. "And yes you are dead, I know what you are."

"And what am I?" Edward asked his voice harsh and disbelieving.

"A Vampire."

Edward turned to look out the windshield. "If I'm a vampire then why are you here with me, alone?"

Bella was starting to get annoyed with Edward. He was admitting nothing, denying everything and making counter-accusations. He was practiced at keeping this secret, it was obvious; or he was just good at getting side-tracked. It made her wonder how old he really was. "I already told you, you aren't a threat to me." Bella said absently as she leafed through the notes Irene had copied for her. It didn't take long. Edward was the first one that Carlisle had turned. Edward had been dying of the Spanish influenza in 1918. That meant, including his human years, he was over a century old.

"So you think you're stronger than a vampire?" Edward's voice broke through her thoughts.

"I know I am." Bella smirked at Edward; he only quirked an eyebrow in disbelief.

Bella tried another tactic. "Do you notice anything different about me?"

Edward gave her an odd look; then looked her up and down, his head snapping up to meet her smirking gaze.

"Your heart's not beating."

"Which also means you can't smell my blood. Go ahead take a big, deep, breath. You're not a threat anymore."

"How did you do that?" Edward was speechless, probably for the first time in his existence.

"You know, I figured out what you are on my own, maybe I should just let you figure out my secret on your own." Bella would never admit it, but she loved pissing him off.

"Bella, you said you would explain."

"Alright … I suppose."

They sat there and looked at each other. Edward gestured at her, "Well."

"Hold on, I'm trying to think of the best way to explain everything. Okay, let's start with the basics; first of all, I'm not human. Well not fully human. My mom is human, but my dad is a witch."

Edward just stared at her. "A Witch?"

"Yup, and I'm pretty powerful for a Halfling. In fact, I have more power than Ch- my dad."

"A Witch?"

"Is that all you can say?"

"I'm just trying to understand. A Witch, like flying on broomsticks, warts, cauldrons, green skin, witch?"

Bella rolled her eyes, "The flying and the cauldrons are right on, as well as spells and stuff, but you should know better than most how most legends are just legends. I mean garlic, holy water, crosses, a stake to the heart or sunlight doesn't kill you does it?"

"No."

"Well, I don't have green skin, warts, or a cat, I don't cackle, and I won't melt if I get wet; and I am neither all evil nor all good. Any questions?"

"Do you have any questions for me?"

"I asked you first."

Edward sighed and looked out at the dark sky. "I should get you home, it's late."

"Are you going to tell your family about me and Charlie?"

"They probably already know."

"Right, Alice."

"How do you – never mind, I don't want to know."

"My friend collects rare manuscripts, I found a passage on the Carlisle's coven."

Edward shot Bella an odd look. "There's a book about vampire covens?"

"Mmmhmm. And lots more," Bella was excited to share this with Edward. "I found spells and rituals specifically for vampires, not just the heartbeat and the blood thing. There are ones that will increase my strength, so you won't have to worry about hurting me. You can't bite me either, a Witch's skin can't be broken. Bones can be, but not skin. I'll age slowly for another decade or so, until I'm the same as a twenty year old human and then I'll just live until I'm killed."

"You'll live forever?"

Bella laughed "Of all I said, that's what you heard?"

Edward pulled into Bella's driveway. "I'll pick you up tomorrow, for school." Edward turned to look at Bella. He reached out, hesitantly, and brushed a piece of hair behind Bella's ear. Bella blushed and moved to get out of the car.

Edward grabbed her hand, "I –" he started to say, then shook his head. "No matter how strong you may be, you're still in danger, even without the smell. I can't -" he shook his head again.

Bella guessed what he was getting at, "I trust you."

"You shouldn't."

Edward shut the car door and sped off.

Bella walked into the house to find Charlie waiting at the kitchen table looking decidedly unhappy. "Where have you been?" Charlie shouted at Bella. "You were supposed to be home two hours ago!"

"It's a long story." Bella sighed and sat down across from him.

"I have time."

Bella recounted most of the evening to Charlie. Everything up to when they pulled into the driveway. Charlie wasn't too keen on her associating with vampires, so it was better that he didn't know how close they were getting.

"Well I'm glad you're safe. We need to be more careful. I'll do a protection spell on the house; you might want to make an amulet for protection. And stay away from the Cullens and cemeteries. With a necromancer running around, you'll be safer away from dead things."

"Mmhmm" Bella answered, thankful she didn't tell Charlie about her and Edward getting close. "I'm gonna get ready for bed." Bella said over her shoulder, as she took the stairs two at a time.

As she lay in bed she thought of Edward, he was all she could think about recently. She wondered what he thought of her being a witch. They had only talked about the basics of being a Witch; he didn't really offer any opinions or thoughts. She would have to try to pick his brain tomorrow in the car ride either the normal way or the witchy way. Either way she did it, she would get some answers.
