Disclaimer: I do not own twilight
A/N: I know it's amazing. I finally updated. I won't offer an excuse because, honestly there isn't any. This chapter has been mostly written for a couple months now, I just never finished it. And I forgot to mention before I got the idea for the necromancer from the book Sabriel, I highly recommend it, if you like this sort of thing.
Witchy Woman
A Rose by Any Other Name
Bella was excited and nervous as she pulled out of the driveway. About a minute after she left her house, she felt relief; she could sense Edward nearby. Bella slowed the truck was about to stop until she saw that he was already in the car. She slammed on the brakes.
"Don't do that." Bella said her heart racing. "I nearly had a heart attack."
"Sorry," Edward said, though he looked anything but. "I forget sometimes."
Bella looked back at the road, "So," she said "do you normally sneak into girls rooms and watch them sleep?"
She could feel Edward tense, "Busted" she said in a sing-song voice.
"How did you know?" Edward asked, she couldn't tell if he was shocked or scared or both.
"I can sense you. I didn't notice 'til this afternoon, but you were all over my rocking chair. I got hell from my dad too."
"Sorry," this time he did look sorry, "what did you tell him?"
"That I had no idea a vampire had been in my room, which was true. I'm gonna have to find a spell to cloak you, so that next time won't be a problem."
"Next time?"
Bella smiled at him, his relief was tangible, "I don't have a problem with you being in my room; I just wish I had known you were there." She paused for a second, "How often do I say your name?"
It was Edward's turn to smile "A lot." Bella groaned.
Edward guided her to the gravel road that led to his house. They were greeted at the door by Carlisle and Esme. "Come in Bella, it's so nice to finally meet you. We're Edwards's parents, I'm Esme and this is Carlisle" she stopped herself, "but you already knew that." Bella nodded sheepishly.
(A/N: I'm not gonna describe the house, you all know what it looks like.)
Bella was ushered into the living room, where she could see the others sitting on couches waiting for the meeting to start. "And you know Emmet, Rosalie, Jasper, and Alice." Alice jumped up and practically bounced over to Bella, "We're going to be the best of friends," she said hugging Bella.
Suddenly, the world was spinning again, and with a gasp she went rigid as a vision overtook her. She was herself only she was older, and in an unfamiliar room. Alice was sitting across from her painting Bella's toenails bright pink and they were laughing at a joke that Alice had just told. With a rush she came back to the present. "Bella, Bella?" She heard Edward calling her anxiously.
"I'm fine" she said when she found her voice, then she looked at Alice and remembered the way she felt towards Alice in the vision, "I believe you," Bella said addressing Alice.
"Interesting," Alice commented.
"What just happened?" asked Edward still anxious.
Alice released her hold on Bella and Bella moved to Edward placing her hand on his arm as she had done in Biology. He relaxed and Bella said to him and the rest of the room, "I'll explain later."
The five of them moved into the living room and Edward guided her to a seat next to him. Sitting down, she hesitated for a moment; she didn't know where to start. She looked at Alice. Alice said, "The knife," and got up to go to the kitchen.
Everyone tensed when Alice brought out a large butchers knife. "What are you thinking?" Edward hissed at her. She just ignored him and Bella got up to meet her at the coffee table. Alice handed her the knife, handle first, "Thanks Alice," she said, relieved to have somewhere to start.
Bella put one arm on the coffee table palm up and raised her arm gathering all her strength, only to be stopped by Edwards' hands gripping her wrist. "Are you mental, you're going to stab yourself in a room full of vampires?" Edward hissed again.
"Did you not hear a word I said last night?" Bella asked angered. Thinking quickly, Bella threw all her magical strength and anger against Edwards' hands and pried them off her, and slammed the knife into her arm. She watched as it shattered and the room became quiet.
Bella looked around, "Sorry about the mess." She held out her palm and the knife reassembled itself in her hand. Bella placed it on the coffee table and went back to her seat.
"Amazing," Carlisle said.
"I'll say," added Emmett.
Bella placed her hand on Edward's, "You need to trust me." Bella said firmly. She watched the muscle in his jaw twitch. "I told you last night my skin is impenetrable. If you had been listening you would have realized that there was nothing to worry about." Edward looked down, slightly embarrassed. Bella put her head on his shoulder.
Lifting her head up a minute later, she said, "Now that that's out of the way, you all realize that I'm in very little danger sitting here with you all. If anyone of you lost control the only thing to worry about is broken bones and those are easily fixed as Edward has undoubtedly told you."
The whole room seemed much more at ease and Bella plowed on. "My dad, Charlie, is a witch; my mom is human, which makes me a Halfling."
"Wait a second," Emmet interrupted, "Aren't males called wizards or warlocks? And Halfling; are you a hobbit or something?"
Bella was patient with him even with the Lord of the Rings crack. "Wizards and Warlocks are a whole other ball game, they're their own species. Warlocks are just plain evil, and wizards, while they aren't evil, you can't trust them; they're always looking for personal gain. And I'm half witch, hence the term Halfling."
"I lived with my mother until this year with my powers bound. On my birthday I regained my powers and I've been practicing witchcraft ever since."
"Our magic is controlled by our emotions. We do spells and potions and we live forever or at least until we are killed. We can change and move things with our minds, then there are other abilities that come with age and experience. First, mental telepathy, then levitation, then premonitions" she stopped there and looked pointedly at Edward, "I had a vision of me and Alice in the future." Then she looked at Alice, "my premonitions come at me violently; you seem relaxed when they happen … I wonder."
Bella reached out with her mind and touched Alice's mind. Can you hear me Alice? Bella thought. You know what I want you to do right? Alice answered her: Yes ma'am, one premonition coming right up.
Bella's eyes became unfocused as she stared into space, she saw the same room from her own premonition, it was fuzzy, but it slowly came into focus. She was looking at the same scene as before but from the side, like it was a movie playing out before her eyes. She saw her other self and Alice talking and doing each other's nails, like before. Then it slowly faded until she was again staring at the Cullen living room.
"This makes sense" Bella started to babble, "my premonitions are in the first person which is why they come at me so violently. Yours are in the third person, you don't feel their emotions like I do …" Bella trailed off, lost in thought. Bella shook herself; "I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but if you all have questions you'd like to ask …" Bella trailed off again, unsure.
Carlisle was the first one to speak. "You mentioned warlocks and wizards being different species, and Edward told us about the necromancer, how many magical beings are there?"
Bella hesitated for a second before saying, "I honestly don't know. Our Book of Shadows is filled with magical creatures. There are wood nymphs, firestarters, waterbreathers, moon goddess', muses, fairies, leprechauns and those are only some of the ones I've met."
"This is incredible." Carlisle started, "In all my years, and believe you me there are plenty of them, I've never once heard of other beings, except werewolves of course."
"We're better at blending in; we don't have all those … complications." Bella responded, referring to the sunlight and such. "And the magical community can't be accessed by humans, only other magical beings can enter the different realms."
"Different realms?" It was Jasper this time that wanted her to elaborate.
"It's very Sci Fi; I confess, I don't even really understand it. Think of it like an alternate reality or parallel dimension. Except instead of being inhabited by humans, it would be inhabited by all leprechauns for example. And there are still a great many that live here among us. Warlocks and Demons have a nasty habit of gaining seats of power in the mortal world. And fairies, wood nymphs, and muses are around us, they just aren't visible."
"I don't like this." Rosalie suddenly said. Everyone turned to look at her, eyebrows raised.
"How can we trust her? We don't even know her. We're not a threat to her, but did any of you think that she might be a threat to us?"
Edward growled, "Rose-"
Rose cut him off, "Honestly, how much do you really know about her?"
"Enough."
"You're a fool." She said and with that she was gone.
Everyone just stared at each other for a minute before Emmett started, "I'm sorry, she's-"
Bella held up her hand to stop him. "I get it and she's right. I won't lie to you, I am a threat. I know how to kill a vampire, magically." Everyone became tense. "But I wouldn't do that, you guys are Edward's family, I wouldn't hurt any of you, on purpose. I could hurt you accidently with my magic, though, or you guys could get caught in the magical crossfire. The necromancer won't be the only one to come after me." Bella paused for a second and looked at her watch, it was a little after eight. She felt her father's mind reach out to her. "I should go."
Edward reached out to grab her hand as she got up. "Don't listen to Rose, you don't have to leave."
Bella smiled at him, "Whether or not I am a threat isn't the issue, Charlie's calling for me, I have to get home. Mr. and Mrs. Cullen, it was a pleasure meeting you." Bella started walking to the front door, with Edward following her.
Bella paused at her truck door, "You can't come in my room tonight Edward, I haven't found a spell to cloak you, and if my father catches you" she trailed off.
Edward frowned, but leaned in to kiss her on the cheek. Bella had to grab the truck door for support. "Baby steps" he whispered, and with that he walked away. Bella, completely dazed shouted after him, "How am I supposed to drive now?" She could hear his laughter from the porch.
"Smug bastard," she grumbled, climbing into the truck. The drive back home was uneventful, but as she parked in the driveway, she remembered she was supposed to have been doing her nails with Jessica. Bella closed her eyes and pictured a light lilac. She looked down at her newly polished nails. "A magical manicure," she said to herself, smiling lightly.
Bella walked into the house and spotted Charlie on his recliner in front of the tv. "Lucy, I'm home." She said as she walked in.
"Cute," he said, his eyes not leaving the football game he was watching, "How was Jessica's?"
"Lots of fun," she lied, "I haven't had a girl's night in ages." The second part was truthful she consoled herself. Deciding she wanted to start to ease Charlie into the whole vampire thing, she sat herself down in the living room. "Dad can I talk to you?" she asked.
"What about?" Charlie asked turning off the tv.
Bella bit her lip, maybe this wasn't such a good idea she thought to herself. "About the Cullen's."
"What about them?" Charlie ground out obviously upset.
"Well, I've been getting to know them at school and-" Bella started only to be cut off by Charlie.
"What did I tell you about them, I don't want you hanging around them."
"The necromancer's not going to risk attacking at school, so why can't I hang out with them?" Bella asked affronted.
"Because they're vampires!" Charlie yelled at her, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"Yeah and we're witches, what difference does it make?" Bella asked keeping her anger in check.
"We can't trust them, they're evil!" Charlie answered.
"No, they aren't, you don't even know them."
"And you do?" Charlie asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, I do, they're nice people." Bella answered firmly.
"They aren't people!"
"Yeah, well neither are we."
Charlie's jaw twitched, similar to the way Edward's had before. "But they're vampires!"
"You keep saying that like it's supposed to mean something." Bella said, regretting even starting this. It had to happen eventually she supposed.
"It does mean something. We can't trust them because they're vampires, they suck blood."
"You're being a …" She tried to think of the right word, "speciesist! Next you're going to be telling me I can't hang out with leprechauns because they might give me bad luck. Or I can't hang out with fairies because they might steal my stuff."
"No, that's not what I'm saying."
"Then what are you saying?" Bella asked exasperated.
"That …" Charlie sighed, "I want to meet them first, before you become friends with them."
Bella squealed. "Thank you Daddy, you won't regret this." She jumped over the back of the couch and headed upstairs.
"I'm already regretting it." Charlie grumbled and Bella pretended not to hear it.
