Chapter Three: Part II
By Songsix
.*.*.*.*.*.*.
Robin wouldn't look at him. He didn't know what Aqualad or Flash were thinking, but he didn't really care. What mattered was that Robin refused to meet his eyes, so he knew he had done wrong. He's always known, but for his best friend to agree, even silently, was the real blow. But what could he expect after everything he had gone through with Franny? Robin must think low of him for letting someone he cared about turn out the way she did. Why else would he be reacting this way?
Flash was the one to break the ice when none of the three teens spoke up. "So what's the plan?" he questioned, with a voice free of judgment. He knew Wally must have meant well, even if his nephew didn't believe it himself.
Kid Flash itched at his side unsurely, green still on the domino mask that would not face him. "We can do one of two things. We can either demagnetize the rig and drive it away from her–" he trailed off, not really sure if he should finish his sentence.
Aqualad cleared his throat with a gruff swallow. "Or?" he asked, gently.
The speedster finally turned away from Robin, looking Flash dead straight in the eye. There was a pleading fear in his expression… " –we can calm her down, but what we would have to do would hurt her. I don't want to do anything that would harm her."…and a guilt in his voice.
Immediately, Flash jumped away from the second option empathetically, "well Kiddo, then we won't do that. You and I will demagnetize the rig. It has a high density steel shell, so it's possible," he insisted, placing a comforting arm around the younger speedster's shoulders. They tensed beneath his touch.
"But how are you guys going to do that with her watching?" wondered Robin, coming back to the conversation and no longer ignoring Wally's gaze. Relief washed over him to see Robin would still be O.K. with him, even knowing how much he messed up. The speedster clapped his hands together sending the young pre-teen a knowing smile, and he returned it without hesitation, sending happy flutters up and down Wally's body.
"Robin, you have to distract her. Be as annoying as you can be."
Lavender hair flowed in the soft wind that blew, as she stood at the top of a skyscraper causing mayhem below with the flick of a wrist. There was ferocity in her eyes, veins pulsating from alabaster skin, and blood dripping from her lip as she bit down while she sent the rig charging through the streets. Her eyes were watering, her teeth were grinding, and her head was foggy. Nothing made much sense in her mind, but the dark burning abyss in her chest was loud and clear; that was all the motivation she needed to tear the city apart.
She wanted revenge, she wanted someone else to hurt in the same way she did. More specifically, she wanted him to pay the price of the toll her heart had taken. Light blue searched for a head of red hair waiting for him to show himself and face her. For a split second, she was sure she saw a blur of yellow sweep by and lost concentration causing the truck to slow down. But when she lost track of the moving body, the rig had begun to pick up speed once more. That is…
"Ma'am, I'm gonna have to ask you quit being destructive and start getting more structive."…until someone else had entered the scene. A pitchy voice followed by a creepy cackle broke her focus again, only this time the rig came to a complete stop with squeaky wheels screeching against pavement.
"Didn't you say the angrier she gets, the more dangerous she is?"
"Who said that?" she demanded to know, squinting her eyes in the sunlight as she looked around her in all directions.
"Up here, Rarity!" he called. She tipped her chin into the air and saw him seemingly flying out of nowhere; he was gracefully aiming for the rooftop next to the building she stood on. He had a lithe body that was perfectly relaxed, his legs bent with ease, and his arms out straight while a smirk adorn his face. He landed on bare hands pushing his body back into the air for a flip landing on his feet without a single fumble –that smug look never faltering. He wore tight black pants, and a blue and white tank top. But she recognized the domino mask, the messy black hair, and those large ears. Every kid knew him and watched him on the television.
"She only gets flustered if you annoy her. If she gets angry from being hurt…"
He motioned her to come over to play, and quickly she flew over at his challenge. They both got into their own battle stances. Magenta slouched down low with one knee bent forward and her other leg straight back. She had her glowing silvery and violet arms out ready to strike. Robin stood with his knees slightly bent into one direction with his upper body face forward, and trainee rubber eskrisma sticks in each hand. They began to circle each other each prepared to attack at any time.
"…then it's over?"
"Wanna repeat that, Boy Blunder?" Magenta threatened, taking the first move leaping towards him with one fist swinging towards his head. Robin quickly maneuvered away from her doing a back flip into a cartwheel away. He could feel the strain beneath his skin as she attempted to control the iron in his body. Luckily, he was not wearing his usual kevlar uniform. Due to the iron particles in the magnetorheological fluid of the material, she would have easily taken him out. Kevlar can be created because of magnetism, and could be destroyed and disrupted by it as well.
"Exactly. She can't know I'm there."
Kid Flash watched from afar following his mentor close behind. He could hear his heart pound as he anticipated the worst. He didn't want either of them to get hurt, but if he had to choose who he wanted to see stand up, in the end, he already knew the answer. With that in mind, he hoped to God that his best friend would be O.K. without his gadgets.
"What shall I be doing?"
Out in the torn up asphalt and concrete, the oldest of the three teenaged superheroes directed the traffic of people to safety with the help of city police officers. With Magenta unfocused and Aqualad's leadership, there was less chaos and more order as the civilians quickly made their way out. He pointed out different routes, used reasoning with the confused, and led with a strong voice. He even double-checked the area to make sure everyone was moving and no one was getting left behind – Including a small dog that hid behind the hood of an overturned car. "Do not worry, I will not hurt you," he assured the poor, shaking creature. Sensing his friendly demeanor, the animal crawled out and reunited with his owner, who scooped him up hugging the pet close.
"Aqualad, I need you to go around getting anyone left in the street to safety."
Flash chuckled from his spot, impressed by Aqualad: Looks like he was good with more than just aquatic creatures. Kid Flash rose an eyebrow not sure as to what his mentor was so amused with.
"Thanks, mister!" the boy thanked, before running off to join the rest of crowds. Aqualad smiled warmly with hands resting at his side, happy to have been some help. He was definitely enjoying the good he had been doing on land so far. As soon as he was sure that little boy and his dog would be safe, he continued to search for others in need.
"Understood, Flash."
Up above, Robin was dodging hits and kicks as the control he had over his body was beginning to waver between weak and strong. As long as he kept irritating her, the girl wouldn't be able to keep control; but, that was what Robin did best: piss people off. Especially the baddies.
"Tch, Boy Blunder? I worked really hard at giving you a nickname. Think you could have tried harder?" he bantered, cackling manically flashing white teeth.
"Like My Little Pony is that creative. Besides, where do you get off coming up with good names? Robin sounds like a girl's name," hissed Magenta, ripping metal antennas from nearby buildings and throwing them into his direction. He hopped, leaped, and ducked every single one only annoying her even more. He was like a swift leaf in the blowing wind. He was seemingly untouchable.
"Hey, y'know, I could also argue that Magenta sounds like a girl's name too," he called back, only provoking her even more.
"I am a girl, you jerk!" the girl bit out, taking the bait so easily.
"What? No way! Coulda fooled me, you just look so manly and–"
"Shut-up!" she screamed, lifting metal construction rods from nearby and throwing them in crazy directions. He moved his body with great agility bending, folding, and flexing in every way he could to avoid her attacks.
"Hey! You should be taking this as a compliment. I could only wish I looked as burly and meaty as you!" he yelled back, barely breaking a sweat.
She seethed at him, her mind becoming even foggier than before, "do you want to die?"
"Like your hair? Because girl, purple is not working on you. Guess when they call it hair dye they really mean die!"
"Hold still, so I can drive this pole into your pathetic body!" She aimed the metal object into his chest, but just as it was about to slice through his skin, he bent his spine backwards hands touching ground capturing the pole with his feet, then chucking it elsewhere. At some points, he was sure she could fling him over the edge, and other times she would be too flustered to keep her concentration on his blood. A few times, he managed to get in a few hits, but he made sure not to hurt her. He had to remember what Wally wanted–
Who Wally wanted.
"Geez, for a girl who's powers is supposed to be magnetism you aren't very attractive." he choked out with hesitation, losing his own focus for the tiniest second, but it was too late.
"Really now? Because I think I have the hotsfor you!" Magenta screeched out, before yanking his body towards her and smashing him into the hard, cold, rooftop.
His blood tingled. It was the strangest sensation he had ever felt, and it was almost similar to the tickle you got when your foot fell asleep from sitting on it too long. His limbs lifted into the air, a few inches off the surface of the roof. His head pounded, and his eyes quivered feeling strained. He could feel his muscles tighten while his veins pulsated violently. She lifted him a few feet up and smashed him back into the ground repeatedly. He could still feel his limbs as they flew up and flung downwards, but he barely had control to move them. It was like being a rag doll. There was a ringing in his ears, and a pain that shot through his chest as a few ribs cracked with each landing. She let his blood rush to his temples. His head was beginning to feel the pressure pushing at his skull. His body screamed, but he refused to moan out in any sort of pain, even if all he could feel was agony.
Aqualad watched his friend being beaten from the roof, but there was nothing he could do as he was too far from the top. However, he had other things to worry about. From the destruction Magenta had already done, there were exhaust fumes everywhere, and engines blowing up. All around him, cars were exploding into flying metal pieces. His skin was tough, and he could dodge it all very easily, but the same didn't go for a normal civilian. He ran around frantically double-checking the streets were cleared.
He could feel the moisture in the air disappear making it harder to breath. Smoke was clogging up the atmosphere, and his legs were beginning to let out. His muscles tightened up, and the passageway in his throat started to close up. It was getting harder to take each step, and before he even realized it, he was crawling on the ground. Just when it couldn't get any worse, he could see a young teenage girl coughing violently, stuck in the backseat of a car tugging helplessly at her seatbelt.
"Kid, you will be helping me with the rig if Robin's got her distracted."
Down below in the streets, when they were sure the rig would not be moving, Flash and Kid Flash entered the scene.
She could have been controlling any truck at all in the whole city, but why this one? That was the question, and that was why only this rig was their main priority. Together, they each held giant oriental rugs they had swiped from the nearby antique store. Not without leaving a couple bills by the register – didn't want to do something criminal now would they? Getting into their positions, they prepared to execute their plan, blissfully unaware of what was happening to Robin and Aqualad.
But it would be O.K. From the corner of his eye, Robin could see the other heroes taking their places. He knew it could sabotage everything if he continued to let himself become a victim to Magenta. He needed to get a hold of his own body again, but how?
"Hey! Wait a minute, what if she starts playing 'puppeteer' with me? I mean, she's no Toymaker, but still…"
Hacking violently into his arms with slimy mucus and saliva monopolizing his lips, Aqualad did his best to make his way towards the crying girl while she continued to struggle. His body ached all over, but there was no way he was giving up now. He needed to hurry though, because at any time this car was going to blow by the looks of the smoke emitting from the seams of the hood. Flakes of white scratches appeared on his tough, dark, Atlantean skin as he dragged his whole being across the hard asphalt. When he finally made it to the car huffing and puffing gasping for the need of some sort of moisture, he rolled up his fingers and smashed his fist into the glass creating a rain of crystals. The shattering sound matched up with the scream of the girl, she didn't know whether or not he was a good guy. She shook with fear, speechless and unsure of what to say or do; but, when she looked into kind eyes, she relaxed putting immediate trust into him, simply because he was a superhero.
With the last of the water he had, he used it to cut open the fiber belt, releasing the girl from her seat before fainting on the spot. Tucking strands of black hair behind her ears, she reached over and pulled his body over her shoulders carrying him out and pulling him along, panting as she struggled to carry his weight. As she tried to move both of them away from the car, a jolt of pain shot through her leg. She mused to herself knowing it must have gotten broken during the crash from all of the confusion. Together, they collapsed next to the vehicle. Time was ticking away, and the engine was surely going to explode.
"If you can find a high concentration diamagnetic material, it will disrupt the magnetic field of any externally applied force, including Magenta's. Such as…silver. So stay close to the bank, Robin."
She sighed to herself, as doom resonated in her head. Worst of all, up above she could see Robin the Boy Wonder, the infamous sidekick of Batman, being beaten to death by the cause of all this trouble and there was nothing anyone could do…
"What has happened?" …or maybe not. His voice was weak, and he sound exhausted but he was still alive. She looked down and saw icy green peak through tired lids. Rather than saying anything at all, she pointed up into the air at the boy in need. Analyzing the situation at hand, his eyes darted all over for some sort of solution. Eventually, they landed on a red mechanism Robin had taught him about that was filled with all the water he would need. With a shaky hand he pointed it out to the girl he had saved. Knowing what he wanted, she ran over to the abandoned hydrant. Lucky for her and him, the firefighters who were going to use it prior abandoned their wrench. With small delicate fingers, she wrapped her hands around the rusty metal and pulled.
"What floor does Keystone bank keep their reserves?"
A cold spray of liquid blasted out from the side, and she jumped away from the sudden force. Aqualad whipped out his water bearers, soaking in the liquid while also allowing the spray to relieve him and bringing him back to normal. When he was sure he had enough, he used all of his strength to wrap the form he had shaped around the body of the smoking now fiery car. He absorbed the vehicle in a giant bubble of water, letting it swim in the liquid before he spun his bearers around and flung it towards the highest floor of the Keystone bank remembering what Flash had told them.
"The top."
It smashed through the floor ripping out of the other side exploding into a million hot, jagged, metal pieces that fell out of the air. Smoke and flames burst into the blue abyss before disappearing creating grey cloud of smog above the bank. Debris and dust flew around them. The building had begun to lean, threatening to fall as it lost its balanced structure. The roof collapsed below their feet while Magenta and Robin fell through, her field breaking as soon as stacks of glittering blocks of bright gold, copper, and silver surrounded them.
A metallic flavor flooded his mouth, and white teeth were stained with bright red. There were bruises all along his body, and scratches torn into his skin since he didn't have his body armor. Oddly enough, he felt better than he had before. He wiggled his fingers in front of his face with great satisfaction. As long as he had control over his own body, Robin felt like a million bucks. He hid behind the piles of silver and copper. He knew eventually he'd have to show himself to that stupid girl, but until then, he could be safe for just a minute so he may collect his thoughts. He needed to do something else to keep her busy, and keep her away from Kid Flash…and Flash too.
"Gotcha. But Flash, how are you and KF going to demagnetize that rig?"
The two speedsters ran around the truck at a decent speed rubbing the soft material against its walls creating friction warming the vehicle. Flash kept his eyes on Aqualad making sure the boy was alright. He would have helped the young teen sooner, but when he saw that Linda had it all taken care of already, he thought the situation could handle itself. As for Robin, when Kaldur smashed that car into the top of the city bank…
"With heat, of course"
…it took everything, every single fiber of his being, for Wally not to drop what he was doing and to go after him. Flash told him he had to trust the kid to know what he was doing, but what else could he do but worry? What if Robin was stuck under some rubble? He was too small to squirm out on his own. How would he know? But if he didn't follow through with his part on this plan, all that his best friend had done in order to lure Frankie away from them would have been for nothing. With this as his motivation, he sped up shoving the carpet harder against the rig. They needed to warm this puppy up!
"Right! Because heating a magnet past its Curie point will cause the poles to point in different directions by vibrating the molecules destroying the alignment which is what creates a magnetic field in the first place. If we keep it warm she can't use it!"
"Please don't need me, Rob."
"As long as Robin keeps Magenta busy, but we have to be careful. If we heat this thing up too high we can cause an explosion."
Magenta scanned the area as the dust started to settle. The air around them was both hot and cold. Flames rose up and the cool air of outside flowed in through the gaping holes in the wall. Her anxiety started to kick in, as the atmosphere grew unsettling. In the shadows of the rubble, she couldn't be too sure if it was from the dancing fire or that dreadful little brat. Her breaths became quicker, she couldn't stop moving her hands, her eyes kept looking at anything that moved.
"C-Come out, c-come out wherever you are…" she called out, but in reply all she received was that eerie cackle. It sounded like the laugh of a hyena, ready to eat its prey.
"Catch me if you can!" he challenged her, throwing his voice across the room. He was just going to have to play hide-and-seek with this chick until Flash and Kid Flash had demagnetized the rig. He crouched keeping low in the shadows confident she wasn't going to find him. No way she could, not in this state of mind.
"You better hope someone catches you." His body froze once more.
"Crud."
"Will my abilities be good of any use?"
Aqualad stood by the rig watching the others do their work waiting patiently for them to finish up. He ran his hand through short blonde hair, wiping the sweat off his brow. He had gotten that girl to safety, and had reported to his next orders. However, as he waited an idea suddenly occurred to him."Flash?"
"Yeah, Aqualad?" The older speedster replied smiling gleefully when he saw flying sparks bounce off the metal. That should about do it. Both he and Kid Flash shoved their feet into the ground slowing down and dropping the rugs.
"Water has no affect on magnetism since the force of a magnet is all dependant on the distance between the two objects, and the angle they are positioned. Water has such little magnetism it will not make a difference as an outside force."
"Have you not considered the possibility of the contents inside being highly dangerous?" warned Aqualad, pulling out his water bearers feeling danger in the air. His senses never failed him, and he knew something was fishy about this whole thing.
"Kid Flash is right, but we will need you to stay at bay as you get people out of the way. When I give the signal, I need you to create a shield to contain an explosion should one happen."
"Shit." Flash muttered, before disappearing without word vibrating his molecules as he shoved his body into the metal container. He had to catch his breath when he saw what was inside.
"By the way, Rob, you're gonna have to lose the utility belt."
Just as Aqualad was about to ask the other speedster if he was going to check as well, before Wally even explained to Kaldur his inability to phase through walls–
"Does that mean I have to lose the grappling hook too?"
–he was gone.
Wally thought he felt his heart stop. Even in his own head, he was screaming at that kid: what are you doing? His feet pounded against the ground as he tugged on forward with arms wide open. He bit down on his tongue, hard, holding his breath running faster with every step, the wind blowing against his face. He could feel his insides dropping weighing him down. There was nothing going through his mind except: catch him, catch him, you need to catch him.
A smirk was plastered on his face as he fell–
No.
Flew.
He was flying, in mid-air, diving into danger head first…
"ROBIN!"
…without a net.
"Don't worry, you'll be fine."
Kid Flash kicked his feet up the building wall shoving his heels into the brown brick propelling his body upwards. He kept green eyes on that domino mask, never losing focus of what was in front of him. Each of their bodies picked up speed as they got closer to crashing into each other like tidal waves. Robin was a falling star, and Kid Flash was the rocket ship. They stretched out their arms, fingers begging to touch as they were breathless and wanting.
"KF!"
"Rob!"
The world stopped turning for a single moment.
The smog cleared, and sunlight framed Robin's pale face as he beamed down at him grinning.
The sensation of Robin's hands raveled into his, tickled Wally's tummy and prickled his cheeks with pink.
Strong muscled arms pulled the other boy into his embrace holding him close, and warmth bloomed into his chest.
"Are you sure I'll be ok?"
"I knew you'd catch me."
"You can trust me."
"And if I didn't?"
"Alright, I'm trusting you with my life you know?"
"You're my best friend, of course you would."
Together, they fell out of the sky, free falling into danger laughing death in the face.

Author's Note:First off, before anyone can argue with me, I shall answer a few questions you may have:
1. YES Aqualad does have the capability of lifting a car. If the original Aqualad (Garth) can lift 4.5 tons, than Kaldur can lift 2. Plus, he can take on Superboy, which says something.
2. As for "But couldn't Frannie just gain back control of the rig again?" No, because the reason they are trying hard to keep it heated is because it eliminates the ability to magnetize the object as long as kept at the correct temperature, just until they arrest her butt…if they can!
Alrighty, thankyou for reading. I would love to hear your thoughts, and I will always respond.
BIG THANKS to TheWickedWizardofOz for beta-ing and being awesome. Konyi and MistressofRobins, for their words.
