The two women stayed together. They supported each other in their rough spots. But it was the night of April 18th.
The sound of a horse whinieing woke Alice and she walked out to the front porch. Alice saw a man ridding his horse as fast as he could. "THE REGULARS ARE COMING OUT!" The man shouted.
"Sir!" Alice shouted. The man stopped. "Sir what is going on?" Alice asked.
"Madam! The British are coming by ship to concord!" the man said. he started to ride again and went back to shouting: "THE REGULARS ARE COMING OUT!" Alice felt fear in her stomach. That's where Alfred and Francis were. Alice ran back inside.
"MADDIE!" Alice shouted. A tired figure appeared walking down the stairs. "we need to hurry!' Alice said. Alice started to rush. Alfred and Francis needed to be warned.
"What's going on?" Maddie asked.
"The British are coming," Alice said. "They are going by sea to concord! We need to warn them!" Alice said. She started to scramble. She packed bread and water and she got dressed. Maddie did as well packing blankets. The two got the horses from Francis' stable and rode as hard as they could to concord.
They got there and were stopped by four soldiers. They were taken to the camp. "General, these two women were riding into camp," One of the guards said.
"We have husbands who are here," Alice said. "Please we just need to see them," Alice begged. The man turned and looked Alice and Maddie over.
"Who are they?" The General asked.
"Alfred F. Jones and Francis Bonnefoy," Alice answered. He gave the two women a scrutinizing expression but Alice didn't care. Alice needed to see Alfred, she needed to know that he was ok.
"Bring them in, quickly," The General said. Alice was pacing holding the sack in her hands clinging to it. The tent opened and two men were brought in.
"Maddison?" they heard. Maddie ran over to Francis and the two hugged.
"Alice!? What are you doing here?" Alfred asked. Alice ran over to him and she shook crying.
"Alfred the British are coming by sea to here," Alice said. "I wanted to give you some blankets and food," Alice said.
"You shouldn't be here!" Alfred said. Alfred broke the hug. "When you heard that you should have stayed inside!" Alfred said.
"I couldn't Alfred! I needed to make sure you are alright!" Alice said. Alfred kissed her forehead.
"Alice I'm not going to fight with you about this, it scares me that you're here!" Alfred said.
"Alfred it scares me that you're here too! Alfred just take the sack," Alice said. Alfred took it. Alice hugged him clinging to him. "don't die," Alice begged. "I still have the necklace," Alice said. she lowered the cloak so her pale neck was showing. Alfred looked and saw the necklace. he smiled.
"I promise, and when this is all over I promise that you will have the wedding of you're dreams," Alfred said. "But if you die we cant do that," Alfred said.
"You left me without a word!" Alice said. She felt to hurt. Alfred cupped her face.
"Alice I love you," Alfred said. "I didn't know what to say that morning," Alfred said. "But you need to go back home," Alfred said.
"They rode such a long way," the General said. "They are very committed women,"
"Sir, if they stay here they are in danger," Francis said.
"True, but if they are with you they are sure to be safe, we are going to meet them halfway, however you two will not," the General said.
"But sir-"
"No buts," he said. "They can't ride back that way now, it would be to dangerous, in the morning we will give them an escort back," the two men sighed. Out of relief and frustration. "Back to your tents," he said. The two men saluted him.
The two men left with their ladies in their arms. The two women held closely to the men leading them through the large amounts of men who sat around fires saying nothing, only eating the small portions of food they had been given by their wives or mothers. Francis and Alfred shared a tent.
"Why did you leave without saying goodbye?" Alice asked.
"I thought it would have been painful for you," Alfred said.
"Alfred, I woke to find you had already started to leave, I chased after you," Alice said. she buried her face in Alfred's chest.
"I don't know what I was thinking, when I saw you fall on the side of the road I wanted to help but I knew I couldn't," Alfred said. Alfred held Alice close. "I am so sorry I hurt you," Alfred said. he sounded heart broken.
"Alfred," Alice whispered.
"it's true, I'm so so sorry," Alfred said. "I shouldn't have cared what anyone else thought, I should have helped you," Alfred said.
"Alfred, I am so proud of you, you are doing what you think is right, you are standing up for your rights as a human, you are fighting for so many people and I cant even fight for myself, I never even told you," Alice said.
"What do you mean?" Alfred asked.
"My parents sold me, they sent me here because they didn't love me, no one in my family did, they didn't care that I couldn't speak, they didn't care that the other children hurt me… Because they did to. That's why when I first came I was always holding myself, that's why I never learned to read or write," Alice clung closer to Alfred. "I wasn't anything to them." Alice said. "Y-you were the first person to show that a person could care for another," Alice said. "A-and I fell in love with you for it," Alice said with a whisper. Alfred held Alice closer.
"Alice I love you, I really am in love with you," Alfred said. Alice looked up at Alfred. He kissed Alice and Alice looked at him with happy eyes.
"I am in love with you too," Alice said back. They two laid on the palate like they had the last night Alfred was home.
Morning came and Alice awoke before Alfred. She had heard the solders coming back. It wasn't the best battle. The tent opened and Alice held onto Alfred. Someone shook Alice awake. Alice looked at the person and the motioned that she had to leave now. Alice hugged onto Alfred and kissed him. Alfred woke up and Alice whispered in his ear. "I love you, see you at home," Alfred looked at her a bit upset and confused. Alice and Maddie had to leave and Alice left crying. Alice got on her horse and kicked it into a gallop. She just wanted to get home. two American solders followed behind the two women closely and they got home safely passing the British solders. They put the horses away properly and Alice and Maddie went back to the house, in a worse slump then before.
It was 1789 and Alice was still waiting for Alfred. She hadn't even so much as looked at another man. Francis was brought home because of injuries. He wouldn't be doing anymore fighting the rest of the war. But Francis swore on his own life to Alice that Alfred was still alive, but without Francis with Alfred, Alice was nervous. Francis spoke about how Alfred saved his life on several occasions but it only made Alice more nervous. Solders were coming back home, news of the end of the war came. They were free now, however no sign of Alfred ever came, not even a hint. Alice was worried. Had he died? Had a sore British solder come by and killed him just out of spite? Alice was in constant worry. The mail came in and Alice found something that chilled her. She sat in her chair that rest next to Alfred's own empty chair. She opened the letter and she felt her heart leap when she read the words.
My dearest, most cherished Alice,
If you are reading this… It's bad news, it means I've been lost or died in battle and cannot be recovered. I pray to god you never have to see this and that me having written this was in vain. I am so sorry my beautiful Alice, my love, my great and beautiful woman. How I would have wished I would have had children, how I would have wished I could have seen them grow, I wish I would have been able to grow old with you. The first moment I saw you, I knew you would be special. I say these words because I love you. I cannot write it enough times, I cannot stop saying it, after I speak it out loud I must say it a million times over again in my head. I love you so much my dear sweet Alice. If you should read these words, I wait for you in heaven.
Your loving husband,
Alfred f. Jones
Alice felt her heart break. Alice laid back and looked out the window. Alfred… dead? The words didn't seem possible. Alice didn't think she could handle it. Alice's entire body felt heavy, worn, and tired. She felt numb, extremly cold and extremely hot. Alice couldn't breath. Her head was in agony. How would she cope? What could she do? Why couldn't this letter have been written in vain? Alice's heart felt as if it was trying to come back together again but the only thing that could make that a success would be Alfred coming back. But he wouldn't… he was never coming back. Alice was a widow even before the wedding. Alice had been waiting for a wedding that would never take place. Alice had been waiting for a husband that she would never see again. Would she ever live again? Alice couldn't move. the letter fell out of her hand, but she didn't move to pick it up. How would she find the energy for anything anymore? Alfred had turned into her heart… He was her everything. She was living on the hope he would come back. Alice felt a hand touch hers. Alice didn't move. how could she? Alfred was dead. She felt the hand squeeze hers. But Alice gave no response. "Francis," she heard a voice call. It wasn't until someone hand touched her hair that she reacted. Alice grabbed the wrist of the hand that was stroking her hair. She turned and looked to see Maddie looking at her. At the sight of Maddie, Alice burst into tears. Alice couldn't stop, how could she? Her entire body was on fire, she was burning, she was bleeding, she was dying. A pair of strong hands grabbed Alice and carried her up the stairs and into her room. Her old room. The room she stayed in when she worked for Alfred. This was the room she realized she was in love with Alfred. The hands had to hold her down until Alice fell asleep. It was hours of tears and crying until then.
