Chapter 4: Humiliation
(Thoughts are in Italics)
Gwen's POV:
I drifted through darkness. Horrible pressure was pounding on my throbbing head, and burns from a rough material that bound my wrists and legs stung with every movement. At least I was sure that I was alive. I could hear my ragged intakes of breath and feel the blood pulse as it ran to my head, adding a dizzy sensation to the confusing darkness. As my thoughts came into focus, and the darkness became less intense, I figured out that there was a cool piece of material wrapped across my eyes, preventing me from analysing my current situation.
I tried to sigh with frustration only to discover something wedged in my mouth, and something slippery keeping it there. My mind was screaming in frustration. 'Ok Gwen, think! What do you remember?' I thought, trying to piece this predicament together. 'Let's see… I was in the shed looking for anywhere to hide when I heard something. I turned to see something being swung at me by a pale person with dark hair. They must have knocked me out and tied me up, whoever they were.'
I had been so busy thinking, that at first I didn't even recognise the voice of my enemy speaking to someone. 'So she did it then' I mused. A wind whipping motion let a cool breeze into where I was being kept. A little bit of light filtered through the blindfold now. There was a collective gasp from everyone. Most sounded shocked, but others quickly got over that and became excited. "So who wants to go first?" I heard her snicker as she roughly grabbed my blindfold and ripped it off, allowing me to finally see the horror she had in store.
Cody's POV:
There she was. I had been trying to find her all morning, praying that Heather hadn't done anything to her; only to find her in the exact type of situation I had hoped she could avoid. There was my angel, suspended over a dunk tank. A rope tied her upside down to a pole that was connected to a large red button. The burn marks on her wrists and ankles were clearly visible as she struggled, getting worse with each movement.
Her hair hid her face but I could tell that she was squinting from the sudden light appearance. An oily rag was wrapped around her mouth and I had a feeling it made it quite hard for her to breath, which would only add to the disorientation of being upside down.
Instead of water below her, there was a vile smelling liquid that appeared to make her eyes water, which was quite a feat considering she was upside down. "As you can see, I have Gwen suspended over a vat of all the puke Chef mopped up during the season 1 eating challenge. To see her plummet into it, all you have to do is hit this red button with this baseball, and then the pole will bend in half, dunking her in the tank. It will reset so that we can do it as many times as we want. Now who wants to-" said the queen bee before she was interrupted.
"I'll go first!" cried Sadie. "Sadie wait, I don't think you should do this" said Katie, grabbing her BFFL's arm. In Katie's eyes, Gwen still deserved to be treated like a fellow human being. "Why? Do you feel sorry for that (censored)? I'm your best friend Katie, not her! She made me so mad on the island, she broke Trent's heart, and she cheated in TDA! Why are you taking her side!? You know what, I'm tired of this. I don't need you anymore anyway! I have new besties, Courtney and Heather; they take my side when it comes to this. So just stay out of my way if you know what's good for you!" Sadie shrieked, shaking Katie's hand off of her arm. "Sadie…" Katie looked like she had been slapped in the face. Katie fled the scene crying.
Noah looked hesitantly at me before chasing after his girlfriend, probably wondering if I could manage this moment on my own. Of course my best friend would figure out that I still loved her, and knew it would be hard for me to watch this, but I still couldn't shake the shock that he hadn't said anything to me when he found out about it.
Sadie stepped up to the tank, and took the baseball from a grinning Heather. I wanted so badly to get up there and help her, but I couldn't risk the chance of them separating us. 'Please miss it' I pleaded, hoping that some force out there was looking out for Gwen and I. Sadie swung the ball and it was as if the whole world was if slow motion. Gwen's dark eyes grew wide with anxiety as the ball zoomed towards its target. It missed.
'Oh thank goodness' I breathed a sigh of relief. Gwen seemed to relax a little bit as well, and it made my heart flutter when she spotted me. She ripped her eyes away though, when a very frustrated Sadie, marched up to the red button and punched it. Gwen seemed to hang suspended for just a second, and everything in me froze.
She looked like she was trying to scream and she shut her eyes, knowing that gravity would take hold any second. My lips form the words but nothing comes out. I was paralysed. She dropped like a stone into the disgusting fluid and through the glass widows you could see her twisting and struggling, trying to untie herself and escape.
After 10 seconds the pole straightened and she was pulled out, still upside down. The puke mixed with her hair, leaving chunks of who knows what in it, and the excess fluid dripped off the ends as it started to dry. Her clothes were stained and clinging to her. Chunky beetle legs and old milk ran down her face into her nose making her gag and splutter. Other indistinguishable items filled her ears and soaked through the oily rag invading her mouth, as well as the chunks clinging to her eyelashes.
It took about 2 seconds after realising what had just happened before I was furious. My eyes narrowed and I could feel that I was clenching my fists hard enough that I was drawing blood. I was just about ready to kill someone. 'How dare that little… that little… (Lindsay swearing at Heather moment) do this to Gwen!' I cursed, feeling the steam coming off of me. Ready to beat the living daylights out of them, I lunged forward, not really giving a thought to the fact that they were girls and that there were plenty of guys here that were stronger than me.
A meaty hand appeared in front of me suddenly, and I didn't have time to stop before crashing into it. "Little buddy, there's nothing you can do for her right now", said a voice, whom I couldn't identify because I was too busy dealing with my rage. "Get out of my way! I have to help her, she needs me, let me GO! They can't do this!" I screamed into their hand, making it sound very muffled. "If you won't listen, then you've left me no choice", they said in an exasperated tone. The next second, they had hauled me over their shoulder and had taken off running.
"Wait no! Stop, I have to help her!" I yelled in a hoarse voice when they finally removed their hand, revealing themself to be Owen. "And how do you plan to help her if you're stuck in a hospital somewhere because you were beaten to a pulp? Or if they decide to keep you apart hmmm?" Izzy asked, popping out of nowhere as usual, as Owen set me down on the floor of his bedroom. "I-" I said before Izzy gave me a 'Think-about-it' look. "I guess I wouldn't be able to" I replied as I stared at the floor.
I had taken a while to think about it, since they were already gone, and I was left talking to thin air. Sighing I got up, and headed to the door, only to discover that it was locked. "Hey let me out!" I yelled as I banged my still clenched fists against the door. "Sorry bud, no can do." Owen said from the other side. "Why?" I shouted, realising that they were trying to keep me from Gwen when she needed me.
"Because you are still gonna try and get revenge on those stupid blubbernugets aren't you? We need you to cool down, before you do anything like my cousin Arnold did when someone stole his left shoe at a festival. Man he went crazy, did I ever tell you the story Owen?" were the ironic words that came out of the crazy girl's mouth before they were too far gone to be heard. Slumping against the door in defeat, I stared at the ceiling for a while, a million thoughts racing through my mind. 'I'm so sorry Gwen, please forgive me.'
Gwen's POV:
"Attention maggots! Report for diner in the dining room ASAP! Over and out" said Chef over the intercom. It was the only thing loud enough for me to hear through all the gunk in my ears.
'Don't think about it Gwen' I thought to myself as it is very unpleasant to throw-up upside down, especially when there's a gag in your mouth. There was cruel laughter as I fell into the vat once more. I lay still in the vile liquid, no longer having the energy or breath left to fight back, after having this ritual repeated the whole day. I shivered in the cool air as the pole straightened again.
This time it swung to the left slightly so that I was no longer dangling over the tank like a worm on a hook. Of course they had done this to me already, they knew you couldn't leave someone upside down all day and they wanted to give me false hope that the humiliation was over. I prepared for the taunting that usually came with these pauses, but instead I hear the snip of garden shears.
'No, no, no! Who gives these people garden shears in the first place!' I panic, after all this is Heather we are talking about. "This is only the beginning Gwenny" I hear Heather whisper in my ear as she grips my hair and pulls me close enough so that no one else can listen in, sending a chill that makes my blood run cold. 'No please don't cut my hair, please' I think to myself desperately. 'She's taken my dignity, my friends and my love, and now she want's my hair too.'
The snip snip of the shears is heard and I fall to the hard stone floor of the pool area. My face scrapes hard against the paved floor as I land, and the smell of blood is distinct amongst the vomit odour. "Just wait and see" she says kicking me in the side. The click click of her stiletto heels sounds all around as she leaves, signalling that I am alone at last.
I lay there in the dark. A goth girl bound with rough rope at the wrists and ankles, scrapes and bruises and burns everywhere, and smelling of dried puke. I can't even scream for help because I'm gagged. 'Well it's not like anyone would come. Not even he will help you now' I thought remembering Cody standing in the crowd watching me get tortured. Doing absolutely nothing about it. 'He's just like all the rest.'
I was shivering now. The violent shaking hurt my stiff muscles, and the cold made my bones ache. It was a seeping cold, one that could penetrate your soul. 'Maybe this is what it's like to die' I fleetingly thought, even though I knew I was nowhere near death. But the surreal feeling was suddenly gone and something thick and soft was placed over my still figure. The rush of warmth was overwhelming, and filled me with a sense of safety and comfort; even though it was probably the last thing I should feel right now.
"Shhh. Don't worry Gwen, it's ok now. I'm not going to hurt you" said a soft female voice. I tried to open my eyes but I couldn't. I felt weightless for a second before finally allowing the dark to take me. The dark was safe.
Cody's POV:
'I need to get out of here' I racked my brain for escape ideas as I paced the length of Owen's room. The moon shining through the window constantly reminding me that Gwen could still be out there. Owen had come past at lunch to give me something to eat, but I hadn't had a bite. The brown colour of the fruit salad clearly evidence of how long it had been sitting in the open.
"Come on Owen. Hurry up" I talked to the empty room. I knew that they had to come fetch me for dinner (it is compulsory for all of us to attend unless we are sick) and the sooner he got here the sooner I could ask about how she's feeling. 'Wait that gives me an idea!' quickly running to Owen's window. I threw it open and scuttled out onto the flowerbox, crushing several beautiful pansies and tulips. Being very careful, as I wasn't sure if it could fully support me, I flattened myself against the soil. I uprooted some daisies and tossed soil onto my back making it harder to spot me.
I finished the job just in time because a second later I heard the door click open. "Buddy it's time for dinner. Are you feeling a bit calmer now?" said Owen cautiously as he entered the room. 'Good' I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard him gasp with shock, after he had searched the whole room and realised that I had "escaped".
'Now just exit the room without locking the door' I silently prayed. I felt bad. Owen was my good friend and I was playing him like a deck of cards. 'Sorry Owen, but nothing stands between Gwen and I.' I convinced myself to get over the guilt and check if he had left the room.
I saw him dash out to search for me, looking very upset, but I suppressed my emotions and waited a minute before climbing in through the window. I had dirt in places dirt should never be, but that isn't an issue for me right now. 'I'm coming Gwen, just hold out a little longer.'
I sprinted past the swimming pool cabanas to grab a towel and skidded to a stop by the extravagant pool area. She wasn't by the smooth blue twisty-slide, or by the Jacuzzis, or by the in-the-pool juice bar. The tiny beads of sweat dripping off me made my skin itch, and I wasn't certain if they were from running here, or if they just wanted to prove to the world that I was a nervous wreck.
"Looking for something?" said a casual voice from the path behind me. "Courtney" I said through gritted teeth. 'This is just great. Gwen is missing and now I have to pretend that I hate her again. Splendid.' "That wasn't my question", she purred teasingly in my ear. Courtney was used to getting her way. She knew the way to get information out of me was simply being a flirtatious girl, and she was definitely working that to her advantage. There's just one problem, and that is that I would never abandon Gwen.
"Well Courtney", I started, turning to face the CIT with an innocent nerdy grin. "I fell into the gardens and got covered with dirt, as I'm sure someone as smart as you could see," I layed on the charm quite thickly in that compliment, "and I decided since I didn't want to dirty the hallways, I would just jump in the pool."
There were a few nerve-racking seconds where I wasn't sure if she believed me. Courtney likes to be certain. "Well go ahead then, Codemiester, I'm not stopping you," she said, taking a few steps away from the pool, to sit down and observe my reaction from a sun chair.
"Thanks Courtney, try not to enjoy the show too much," I said with a wink as I peeled off my shirt to jump in the pool. Finding Gwen would just have to wait for now, I had to throw Courtney off the scent first. "As if," she sneered, rolling her eyes for extra emphasis.
I took a running start and dived into the icy pool, knowing she would leave soon to get ready for dinner. As the water rushed over me, I realised something. Gwen wasn't where they had left her (which I knew from what Owen had told me earlier), which left 2 knew questions. Where is Gwen, and how did she get there?
Author's Note:
Hi everyone! Sorry for the late update, but it's up now and I think that 3098 words isn't too bad.
I'm disappointed with the amount of reviews, but I will continue to write none the less, because I love Gwody and I love to write.
Who do you think the girl was that took Gwen? If you're right then I will give you a shout out.
If you have another couple you would like to see then let me know. Also, sorry for the detailed description of the vomit. There won't be any of that next time!
Next chapter: Gwen and the mystery girl bond as she gets better, and Cody goes looking to find her, only to have a dramatic meeting.
Thanks everyone. R&R :)
