Chapter 7. A Hybrid's Friend

Disclaimer: I don't own anything besides Veronica,
Maxwell, and my ideas! Please tell SMeyer that.

Warning?
This is going to be a flash-back chapter of-sorts, so there will most likely be kissing, not a lot since it's a short flash-back, but still. You have been warned.

Veronica POV

Sighing, I slowly walked up the stairs that matched the marble flooring, into my rather large master bedroom. I walked over to my bay window that over-looked the forest, and started to think. Part of me wanted to run.

I just wanted run like I had always done when people were getting suspicious of me, or when I had stayed somewhere to long. Of coarse that wasn't the reason right now, I should have thought about what was happening back then, maybe then I wouldn't have to worry about it now.

After all, your past always catches up on you. Whether you want it to or not.

I flopped down onto my bed, the dark red color comforting me. I didn't bother to change, or lie under the covers. I was just willing a deep sleep to overtake me. Wanting to forget this day even if it's just for a little while.

Slowly, I welcomed unconsciousness.

Flash-Back/Dream POV

The year was Eighteen-ninety-seven, a young woman, with slightly curly brown hair and piercing blue eyes the color of the ocean, waited in a carriage as someone opened the door for her. Two large doors that went along with a large house opened at her exit from the carriage.

A young man happily bounded out of the house, he had short dark brown hair and beautiful green eyes the color of a pine tree, he was very muscular looking, but seemed young with the spark in his eyes.

He ran to the girl, picking her up and giving her a kiss on her lips as a greeting to his lover. Setting her down, they walked to the garden, "Veronica," He said to the girl, -Veronica- "I missed you, love." Veronica smiled, "I told you Maxwell, I had to visit a friend."

Maxwell smiled along with her, "I know love, but it didn't stop me from missing you." He replied, causing her to laugh, "Did you think that I wouldn't come back?" She asked, in a joking tone. Maxwell chuckled and answered in the same joking tone, "Why yes, I did, I was ready to leave and come and find you."

Veronica smirked, "What would you have done if I hadn't come back?" She asked, causing him to frown, becoming serious, "I would find you. I will always find you." Veronica stroked his cheek, and whispered in his ear, "What if I didn't want to be found?"

Maxwell was about to reply but Veronica had backed away from him, and started following the maid into the house. Leaving him to wonder what would happen if she left one day with no intention of being found.

A short while later, Maxwell entered the house, finding Veronica leaning up against a wall, eating an apple. She smirked, "Took you long enough, I thought I would have to entertain myself tonight." Maxwell laughed, and followed her up the stairs into his room.

"Veronica?" Maxwell asked once they were alone, "What did you mean earlier?" Veronica smirked and wrapped her arms around his neck, "It doesn't matter, I'm here now. Let's enjoy it while it lasts shall we?" Veronica leaned up to kiss him.

Maxwell nodded, and leaned down to Veronica to start the kiss. Veronica smirked against his lips, and shoved him down onto the bed, "I love you, love." Maxwell stated, causing Veronica to smile, "I love you too, Maxwell."

Veronica POV

I awoke from the dream with a jolt. I was panting, gasping for unneeded breaths. God damn you Maxwell, god damn you for coming back into my life when things were finally getting- Getting what? Good? Not really, but I wasn't killing anyone, so it was good enough.

He was just a play thing, I never loved him, that I was sure of. Whatever I said back then was a lie so I could continue to entertain myself, then I started to hear word of hunters, so I left, and didn't bother coming back. Simple enough right?

Wrong.

About half of what I just said is probably a lie. I fell for him, I hadn't meant for it to happen, but it had. All of the other humans were just toys; a thing to entertain me, and then I would drain them when I got bored.

But with Max I felt as if I needed to protect him, he was more then a toy, he was a living, breathing human being, who was sweet, funny, caring, and very easy on the eyes. And I fell in love with him. I mean, who wouldn't?

I sighed and turned to the window, sunlight was streaming into the room from the space in between the curtains. Heaving myself up off the bed, I walked into the master bathroom, and decided that a shower could do me good. Preferably cold.

After an hour of relaxing, I was dressed and ready for the day.

Today was Saturday, which meant that I had two days until everything goes to Hell. And also when I tell Jessica when we should go shopping. I chuckled to myself, well at least I have that to look forward to, right?

Sighing, I fished around in my book-bag for Jessica's number that she had given me one day this week. To be honest, I really had to much going on on Monday, so I might as well talk to Jessica today, maybe we could go shopping or hang out? Even if I couldn't tell her anything, I could at least take my mind off of things.

"Veronica?" Came Jessica's confused but happy voice, after she had picked up her phone. "Hey, Jessica." I greeted, seeming to cause her more confusion, "Hi?" Slowly came her reply, as if she was wondering if I was actually calling her, and didn't have the wrong number.

I heard a shuffle come from the other end of the phone; it sounded like she was moving around. "What's up?" Jessica asked, sounding concerned, I chuckled, "Nothing much. I was wondering if you would like to hang out today?" I replied, slight amusement in my tone.

I could almost hear a smirk in Jessica's voice as she replied, "Why? You're not sucking face with tall dark and sexy?" She teased, causing me to roll my eyes and laugh, "Jacob? No, I'm not really looking for anything serious right now anyways."

Jessica sighed, seeming to be ready for another round of teasing, "Well that's just to bad." She paused, pretending to mull things over, "Say? If you're not dating him then I guess you wouldn't mind me asking him out?" I was right, she was teasing me again.

I was also right about her taking my mind off of things, now there was no way I was going to take no for an answer. "Be my guest." I responded in the same teasing tone, causing us to both break out in laughter. After we composed ourselves, Jessica started talking again, "So, what were you thinking of doing today?"

I shrugged even though she couldn't see me, "Anything. We could shop, or just hang around my house, or-" I was quickly cut off by Jessica, "Don't you live alone?" She questioned, to which I replied with a 'Yeah' causing her to laugh, "Then we are most defiantly hanging out at your place! What's your address?"

I chuckled and quickly told Jessica my address. In the background I could faintly hear her writing it down on a piece of paper. After I finished telling her, Jessica took a moment before she realized where I lived, "That's almost in the middle of the forest?" She questioned, confusedly.

I smirked, "I know, but the house is amazing, and I don't have any annoying neighbors." Jessica laughed, causing me to pause, "Plus, I'm one for my privacy. This way I don't have anyone intruding on my business."

Jessica laughed again, and I could picture her nodding her head, "True. Fair enough, I'll be there soon, like I'm literally leaving the house right now." Jessica wasn't lying, I could hear the door shut, and her climbing into her car and starting it. "Alright, see you soon Jess." I stated, getting a short, 'Okay, see you then' and then her hanging up.

Jessica was here maybe ten or fifteen minutes later, which meant that either she was a really fast driver, or her house was on the edge of Forks as well. I blurred down the stairs and in front of the door, and quickly opened it; not wanting to leave Jessica out in the downpour.

She had a surprised expression on her face, and her mouth was shaped like an 'O'. I actually laughed at her, causing her to snap out of whatever trance she was in, "You live here?" Jessica asked, to which I replied with a nod, "This isn't a house; it's a mansion!"

I smirked and gave Jessica the grand tour, her expression the same the whole tour. "How did you afford this?" She questioned after the tour was over, "I was an only child, and my parents passed away, without any family remaining. They were rich, and everything went to me." I explained quickly.

Jessica nodded and slunk down on my couch, turning on the flat-screen. Suddenly, there was a crash, and Jessica and myself's heads shot towards the kitchen. Jessica stood up, and then the smell coming from the kitchen hit me. It was Vampiric, but a hint of the woodsy smell that Wolf-Shifters have; Max.

I was standing in front of Jessica in less then a second. I had to shield her from Max, I was actually trying to be friends with her, and I think there would be a dent in the friendship if she got turned into a Hybrid, or a Vampire.

Max was standing in the doorway in a flash, "Oh, you brought a snack?" He questioned with a smirk, causing me to growl, "You aren't touching her; she's a friend." I spat out, causing him to flinch for a second, before regaining his cocky composure.

Behind me I could hear Jessica's heartbeat rise, "Veronica, what's going on? Who's that?" She questioned, before I could answer her, I felt Max blurring toward us, and faster then Jessica could register the movement, I had him pinned up against the wall.

I felt my eyes lighten and my fangs emerge, "You need to leave. Now." Max's brown eyes darkened, turning almost black, and his fangs emerged as well. When a Hybrid bites someone, they turn them into a Hybrid as well, but Max doesn't have as much Wolf-Shifter blood as me, so I'm stronger. Although he is stronger then the average Vampire.

I growled at him, "I thought that you wanted to win me back? You aren't getting brownie points for eating my god-damned friend!" Max hesitated, "I'm doing this for you, not the human. Just make sure she doesn't tell anyone." He stated, before blurring out of the house.

I felt my face return to normal, and I turned around to face Jessica. She looked around for a moment, before letting her gaze fall onto me, "What the fuck was that?" Sighing, I walked to my couch and patted the spot next to me after sitting down.

Jessica reluctantly sat down next to me, as I started to explain. "Almost everything that you've been told is a myth, is real." I started, "Werewolves, Vampires, Witches. All real, just tweaked a little. I'm not one of the things that I just mentioned; I'm a mixture of a Wolf-Shifter and a Vampire, I'm a Hybrid."

I expected her to laugh at me, call me an idiot, or just freak out and run out of the house, but all she did was sit there, not saying a word. When she finally spoke, the words that came out of her mouth surprised me to say the least.

"I believe you."
