Finn's stomach clenched with the confession, biting his lip, he raised his eyes to confront Rae's reaction.
"Huh?"
Finn would have laughed, if not for being so distressed, "Is that a statement or a question?"
Finn focused on her raven tresses swinging back and forth as Rae dropped her head into her hands, "I'm confused. I mean... why?"
Stretching back in his chair, Finn couldn't help the sarcasm in his voice or his own confusion. "Why do I want ya?" Somehow he thought this would be easier.
"Stop answerin' questions with questions!"
Out of pure exasperation Finn's hands came down hard on counter, "Well stop bein' so daft!" Okay so maybe insulting Rae wasn't the best way to go about this. Scratching at his ear, he felt a bit put off now.
"Okay, okay." Raising her hands, Rae signaled a truce. "What do you want with me?" To which both teens blushed, shifting uncomfortably. So not how Rae meant that to come out.
After a beat, Finn worked up the nerve to look her in the eye again and lay it all on the table.
"I want to be with ya proper like. I want to hold your hand. Kiss ya whenever I want, be able to keep you close to me when we're out, so everyone knows I got the best girl there is. Everything, I want everything with ya." Taking in a breath, his eyes flickered to the far wall as he rubbed his clammy palms along the seams of his jeans. Seconds felt like hours.
"Finn... Finn! Look at me. Please?"
The plaintive note in her voice caused him to puff out the breath he hadn't realized he was holding. When Finn focused in on her, he saw what suspiciously looked like tears in her eyes. Blimey, I didn't wanna make 'er cry.
"Do you mean it?"
Reaching across the small distance of table, Finn skimmed his knuckles across her velvety soft cheek, nodding. "More than anything."
With a watery smile, Rae's slightly shaking hand reached for Finn's, "I never thought this could happen."
"Why not?"
Rae's suddenly flushed cheeks and averted gaze, promised that her first impression wasn't admiring. "Well because at first I think you were just a huge knob. Your only redeeming quality was your taste in music. But then after you defended me to Big G, I knew I had got ya all wrong. I mean I always thought you were a massive slice, but nowhere near a good guy til then."
Finn nodded. She was being kind in his initial treatment of her. "I just didn't know what to do with ya. I've never met anyone like you. As my Nan would say, you're my other half. Just took me some time to realize it."
His satisfied grin at her widening eyes and pink cheeks, reminded Rae that she wasn't all wrong in her first impressions. He just reserved the playful side for those close to him.
Finn stood up, holding his hand out for her. "Let's get outta here, an' find some tunes."
Smiling, Rae cautiously placed her hand in Finn's. "Come on, I won't bite. At least not till later." Rae's laugh was the greatest music to his ears.
Snaking through the cafe, Finn stopped short three feet from the door causing Rae to bang into his back, not an unpleasant feeling. Archie came strolling in with Barney. They made eye contact and then he watched Archie's gaze fall to his and Rae's joined hands. Archie grinned at them, elbowing Barney in the side, who looked confused.
"So what's going on here then?"
Finn grinned rather sardonically. "You should know." Finn took an internal breath. It was difficult to square the guy that caused so much turmoil for him, was also the one that helped him get his girl. "Guess I should thank you." Finn held out his hand, to which Archie enthusiastically took it. "We're heading out."
"Take good care of my girl there Finn." Archie winked at Rae. Finn frowned and playfully punched Archie's arm with more force than necessary.
Rolling her eyes, Rae smiled. "Arch." She swatted at him and looking between Archie and Barney, sent a wink of her own. To which he flushed.
Once outside the cafe they looked in the window at their friends for a moment. Turning back toward one another, they smiled warmly. Finn hooked his index finger through Rae's right hand, giving a gentle tug. Shaking her head in the negative, he took a step toward Rae, grabbing the edge of her jacket to pull her closer. Finn smiled, leaning in closer. "Cause you're lovely and your precious, and somebody wants you." He whispered a hairsbreadth away from her tantalizing lips. Rae closed the distance. Finn wrapped his arms around her, relishing the feeling of her all around him, his hands and lips wandering around her delicious body.
Pulling slightly away Finn breathed out, "Mine." And with a jerk of his head, they ran off to his bike.
From inside the cafe Archie gave himself a pat on the back for a job well done. This would go down in the history book of their lives. Turning back to Barney, he hoped he could be that happy one day.
The End (or is it?)
