"Darn it. What are we going to do if he dies?" Ice muttered, picking Spiff and carrying him into a smaller chamber off the side, above the airlock.
"Go back again. Redo it all." Maya responded, leaning against the metal door frame.
"Your power can't last forever! You keep breaking the laws and going back to that ancient sidewalk!" Ice snapped, her green eyes glaring up as she stared into the Maya's blue-gray eyes.
A tiny flicker of green seemed to jerk up in Maya's eyes, and she responded.
"That may be true. Yet, what may we do else?" She reasoned, her grammar choices falling away a bit and showing that she was from far, far away.
"Just because I know your kindred and your true name doesn't mean that you can have bad grammar choices." Ice grumbled.
"Shut up."
"No."
Maya rolled her eyes, her hand twitching slightly
Her eyes lowered to the floor, the deep gray pierced by icy streaks of blue, or blue as deep as the night sky, interwoven with with streaks of green like small glassy fires in the deep pits of her eyes.
"Stop pretending." Ice said, spinning around, her eyes showing how feline she really was, her waist thin and her jet-black hair falling below her narrow shoulders, her cheekbones standing out sharply against her pale skin.
"Pretending what?" Maya asked, looking at the tall girl, more feline than human.
"Pretending to be human. You know you aren't." Ice retorted, her eyes flashing with hints of fire reflected from deep inside her, where the wild still called, even now, when the wild had almost perished.
"I know I'm not. But what else is there to do?" Maya responded, looking again at the hard metal floor. "If I bring out the truth, then they will kill me for sure. I will disclose the truth as soon as I may, which will be at the end of this dark trial."
"At least you will someday, old friend." Ice responded, the flames dying in her eyes as she turned back to Spiff.
"Continue with what you are doing. I have a certain ship to pilot." Maya walked down the narrow hall to the cockpit, seating herself in the captains chair, her back to Hobbes, who had been looking at the space whirling by nervously.
"Never give up, Hobbes. If you give up...then all will be lost, old friend." Maya looked over her shoulder at him. Her eyes showing the light that shone with sun and moon.
"You..." They're eyes met for an instant of recognition.
