The next day Sollux and Feferi were at school. Feferi already seemed happier. It made sense. Before, my life consisted of mostly Terezi, Sollux, Gamzee and Nepeta. I'd lost Gamzee and Nepeta, then Sollux and Terezi. Even getting just Sollux back was one fourth of that. Sollux knew that Feferi and I still really hated him, but he also knew we'd get over it, even if it took years.
Sollux was in all my classes, which I found strange yet didn't really have a problem with. Feferi was in my first period class. Sollux and I were walking to second period when we saw her dart past us and into the classroom.
"Hey Tavros," she said sweetly.
"Oh, um, hey Feferi," he said.
"We have our next class together. Want me to push you there?"
"Oh, um, sure. Thanks Feferi."
She smiled. "No problem Tavros. I'm just glad I could help." She pushed him out and passed us.
Tavros's wheelchair was motorized but it didn't really work. I knew Tavros never had that much money. I was glad Feferi was helping him out. I walked into algebra and sat where I usually sat. Because I sat next to the only empty desk in the class Sollux sat next to me. All during class I thought about my dream and what Nepeta had said. 'You know you need to do. It's ok, I won't get mad.' I think I understood. I looked at Terezi in the back of the class room. She had her hood up and was staring out the window, twirling her hair. I noticed that Vriska was looking at her too, more disappointed than concerned. I knew I had to talk to her. That's what Nepeta meant but why, I didn't know. She probably hated me. So what was the point? When lunch came around I was walking to where we usually sat when Sollux stopped. "Why are you thitting over there?" he asked, confused. I probably should have explained I didn't sit at the back table anymore.
"We don't sit there anymore," I said briefly, standing next to the table Feferi, Tavros, and I usually sat at. "No one does."
"No even you?" I shook my head. "Why not?"
"Because. I don't know, some unspoken rule," I said. I really didn't want to go into detail. Part of me wanted to sit there, just like always, but I wouldn't.
"I don't know about you, but I'm thitting there," he said.
"Why?" I asked. It would be simpler if he'd just sit next to me, but I knew if he sat there, I would too.
"Because. I always sat there before. It was our throne, remember?" he smiled a bit "It took forever to clear everyone else out so they knew it belonged to uth. We worked too hard to give it all up because some jerks don't think we thould." He looked straight at me. "Just because they're gone doesn't mean we can't thit where they used to." And with that he sat down at the very back table and I sighed and sat next to him. Sollux was causing some drama and I kind of liked it.
"I hope you're happy," I said rolling my eyes and picking at my food. Feferi came in shortly, pushing Tavros. I only took her a second to realize that we weren't where we usually were. Her eyes looked in on us and I saw her smile a bit. She was like me. She had always wanted to sit back here again.
She pushed Tavros next to the table and helped him actually sit down then sat next to Sollux "Why are you sitting here?" she said quietly.
Sollux smirked "Why not? We always used to sit here. Why not now?"
"Yeah but...Well no one has sat here since…you know…"
"Well we're thitting here now aren't we?"
"But why do you want to?"
He shrugged "I just explained to KK. I'll keep it thort this time. Because it'th our thpot. Always wath, alwayth will be. We don't have a good reathon to give it up."
"Fine," Feferi said. "You do want to sit here right Tavros? Because I could help you if you wanted to sit somewhere else."
"No. No I want to be here." He said, not even stuttering like he usually did.
"Great. Me too," she said, sighing. We started eating in silence, yet not as awkwardly as usual. It felt right, normal kind of. Feferi turned to Sollux, something on her mind "Sollux?" she asked.
"Yeah FF?"
"Why did you cut me off? I didn't realize how much I needed you until you left and I didn't realize how much I missed you until you came back. Why though Sollux?"
"Like I said before, I don't know FF," he looked away from her. "I don't know. I felt like I had to."
"But why Sollux? Why?"I could tell she was mad, like she was restraining herself from yelling. "I asked you a million times yesterday. All I need to know is why!"
"Becauthe…" he had no idea. Time for me to save the day, like always.
"Because we all have different ways of coping with things like this. His way was locking everyone out so he couldn't hurt them anymore. Then when he realized he needed us and missed us he thought it was too late, we'd moved on and if he showed up we'd ignore him, hate him. That's why." Sollux gave me a 'thank you/where did that come from?' look.
"Ok. I sort of understand. Still we could have helped one another. We were friends. Really close friends," Feferi said slowly.
"I know FF. I'll never be able to thay thorry enough. I'll say it every day to you till I die." She blushed a tiny bit, and I knew dispite her wanting to be angry, she was going to forgive him sooner or later. "I'm tho thorry FF."
"One day I'll forgive you." There was silence as we were all eating, including Feferi, which was good. I never realized how intensely skinny she was.
"FF, what happened with ED?" Sollux asked slowly, knowing he was trending dangerous waters.
"What about him?" she said angrily.
"You guys we're intheparable for the longetht time."
"Yeah that was before, this is now. A lot has changed."
"Before you didn't thit at thith table. We do now."
"Well I wanted to sit here. I don't want Eridan back. So what, we used to be best friends. Nothing like a tragedy and a few mental breakdowns to show who your real friends are. Soon all your old friends are talking behind your back, spreading your secrets, talking about some stupid fish girl!"
"Tho you didn't think I was your real friend? What about now?"
"Why are you standing up for him?"
"Because he made you happy. I want to know if it'th really worth it to go and beat the crap out of him. If you thill care about him at all I won't."
"Don't Sollux," she said quietly. "It's fine."
"Another quethtion. Why don't you use punth anymore?"
She sighed. "They seemed too happy and they didn't seem to fix me anymore."
"I think you thould keep doing them."
"Everyone thought they were lame anyway," she said curtly.
"Whale I think they were adorbubble," he said, causing her to smile at bit.
"Nice one," she said and he smiled back. Silence passed. "Oh I wish we could go back to before."
Before, I thought. Before was so long ago and such a better time. Before, when Feferi was popular and everyone loved her. Before, when Tavros could walk and had an ounce of confidence left in him. Before, when Nepeta and I had a weird flirting game we were always playing. Before, when Vriska was even slightly nice and John was just a nerd. Before, when Eridan took Feferi to the dance then Eridan came to me for relationship advice because she thought of them as just friends. Before, with our little unnecessary drama we thought was so important at the time. Before, when everything was ok.
I looked at Feferi slightly smiling a smile that didn't seem forced, at Sollux sitting next to her, looking happier then I'd seen him in a while, at Tavros looking actually happy to be around us, if only a little. Maybe we'd be ok soon, not like it used to be.
But it would be close enough for me.
