Complications-Chapter 4
Harvey is half heartedly going through a pile of files at his desk. His thoughts are elsewhere though. He puts the papers down and swivels his chair around so he's now facing the city sky line. He rubs his face in exhaustion and trepidation.
It's been nearly three weeks. Nearly three weeks since he woke up to find Mike bleeding out on their bathroom floor in the middle of the night. Three weeks since Katie has been born. Close to three weeks since he had to tell the kids that they have a new baby sister but they can't see their father for Mike has remained still and unmoving in that damn hospital bed.
He doesn't want to be at the office but he agreed to go in for the day at Donna's urging. She told him that he needs to get away for a bit, even it is for work. There's stuff that only he can get in order. And since there hasn't been any change in Mike's condition there is no idea how long this single parenting thing is going to last.
So at the moment he's here trying to get some kind of work done. Jamie is back at school. At first Harvey thought there will be a huge argument when the subject of going back to school came up. But, surprisingly Jamie didn't put up a fight. Then again Jamie hasn't been putting up a fight about anything as of late. Donna is back at his place watching the girls. Katie came home a couple of days ago and Aislin has been more than eager to help.
The familiar ring of his cell phone breaks his thoughts. He doesn't recognize the number but knows that it might be another hospital line, Harvey answers it quickly.
"Hello/"
"Mr. Specter?"
"This is him. Is everything okay with Mike?"
"Mike? Oh….I'm sorry Mr. Specter. This is William Matheis calling from Brighton Prep."
Harvey's eyes go huge.
"Is this about Jamie? Did something happen?"
"Yes, I'm calling to inform you that James got into a physical altercation with another student."
A fight. Jamie got into a damn fight. Part of him is not too surprised by this. Jamie has been way too quiet, barely speaking over the last two weeks. He was a powder keg ready to explode. But, still. A fight? That's not Jamie at all
"I'm sorry…"
"I know that there has been some personal problems with your family. But, here at Brighton Prep we don't condone physical violence of any sort."
Harvey puts the papers he was trying to look through in a pile and stands up. Already heading out the door.
"Of course, Mr. Matheis. I'm on my way down there now."
"Thank you, Mr. Specter."

Donna looks up abruptly from the magazine she's looking through while sitting at the island in the kitchen when she hears the door to the apartment slam open and Jamie comes barging in, Harvey hot on his heels.
"Jamie!" Harvey calls out to his son.
"Hey, klddo…." Donna greets the boy as he pays her no mind when he quickly runs by her on way to his room. She looks at Harvey who is standing awkwardly in the kitchen. He starts to walk out of the kitchen, but then stops. Not sure what to do.
"What the hell is going on?' Donna asks. "I didn't expect to see you guys for a couple of hours."
Harvey shakes his head. "Got a call from the school. Jamie got in a fight."
Donna looks at him in confusion. "What? Jamie in a fight?"
Harvey nods his head. He can understand her confusion. Jamie has always been a cool and collected level headed child. Even during his toddler years there were very few tantrums. He's always been so good with Aislin. So patient and easy going. Harvey has joked with Mike that maybe it was the effect of some residual pot in both Mike and Trevor's systems that created the kid's easy going demeanor.
Harvey rubs the bridge of his nose in frustration. He's at such a loss here. The car ride home from school was one for the most awkward experience of his life. At first he let his anger lose. Asking the five year old what he was thinking of getting into a fight. When that didn't work he remained silent, hoping that would provoke the kid into saying something. Still nothing. Finally, when they were almost home, Harvey asked quietly what was going on and pleaded for the boy to talk to him. Bur still, Jamie remained silent.
"Don't know what the fight was about. He's not saying anything. Didn't tell the principal what happened. Didn't say one word to me in the car."
The loud sound of something banging stops their conversation.
"What the fuck is that?" Harvey asks aloud.
The redhead moves her head to the side, towards the source of the sound. "Sounds to me like a tennis ball hitting the wall."
"The girls napping?" he asks over the noise.
Donna nods her head. "I think you need to take Jamie to see Mike," she says. "He's out of the ICU."
The banging continues.
Harvey instantly shakes his head no. He doesn't want Jamie to see Mike like that. So quiet. So still.
"Come on, Harvey! You know how smart the kid is. He probably thinks you're hiding something from him because you won't let him see Mike."
The banging continues now louder.
"I don't know what to do?!"
"You gotta do something!" She motions towards Jamie's room where the noise is getting louder and louder.
"I know that," Harvey whispers.
Then there's a loud crash that is quickly followed by Katie crying.
Donna looks at him sadly. "You talk to Jamie. I'll get Katie."
He nods his head and makes his way towards Jamie's room. Harvey knocks on his son's door and isn't surprised when he doesn't get a response. He hesitantly walks into the room taking note of the shattered remains of the lamp that was on his son's dresser.
"Hey, bud..." He greets as he goes to take a seat next to Jamie on his bed. Not knowing where to start, he begins. "You woke up your sister."
Jamie still refuses to look up but finally he speaks for the first time all day, "I woke Acey?"
"Not Aislin. Katie," Harvey replies.
"I don't care if I woke her up," Jamie snarls.
Harvey's shocked to hear his son's disregard for his youngest sister. But, then again Jamie hasn't been entirely happy about the newest addition to their family. First, the ET comment. Then the fact that Jamie has refused to even hold or look at the Katie. Harvey suspects that Jamie is not upset about having his new sister, he thinks it's the fact that Katie is home while Mike is still in the hospital. Katie is just taking the brunt of the five year old's wrath.
The lawyer puts his arm around his son, a little hurt that Jamie doesn't move into his chest like he usually does. "Listen, buddy I know you're hurting. I know that you want your Dad here, but you can't be mean to Katie and you definitely cannot be getting into fights at school."
Jamie doesn't say anything for awhile making Harvey feel like a complete failure as a parent. He goes to get up to check on his girls. Just as he reaches the door, Jamie says quietly "I want things to be the way they used to be. I miss him."
Harvey turns around. "Oh Jamie," he says moving back towards his son and sitting back down on the bed. "I miss him too."
He can see Jamie's shoulders start to hitch and hears the sniffling, he pulls him into a tight hug, rubbing the back of his son's head. "I know it's hard, kiddo. I miss him too." He feels the wetness of his son's tears against his neck. "Wanna go see him?"
The lawyer can feel the boy nodding against him. "Okay, buddy. Let's go see Daddy."

Just as they're about to go into Mike's room, Harvey stops his son. He bends down to look at his son in the eye. "Remember buddy, Daddy is unconscious. It's not just sleeping."
"I know what a coma is Papa," Jamie says with a roll of his eyes.
Harvey can't help but smile at his son. After Harvey explained as much as he felt comfortable with telling a nearly six year old of Mike's condition, Jamie got to work looking up a plethora of information. All the way over to the hospital he sat and listened as Jamie rambled on about comas. How long they last? What causes them? About stories where music and smells help wake coma patients. "I know you do, Jay."
Harvey opens the door and Jamie is only still for a second before he launches himself to his father's side. "Hi, Daddy!"
Before he knows it Jamie is struggling to get on the bed beside Mike. Mike is in no real danger now. The stitches from the c-section have been removed. Jamie can't hurt Mike and he knows that the physical closeness will be good for the boy. Hell, maybe it will be good for Mike, definitely can't hurt him.
"Here you go!" Harvey says as he easily picks up Jamie and places him on the bed, maneuvering his husband's arm so that Jamie is virtually burrowed into his father's side. Harvey steps back giving the two some privacy. He looks on as Jamie plays with Mike's hospital gown.
"I miss you Daddy. I'm sorry. I haven't really been good for Papa. I'll be better I promise."
As Jamie tells Mike about what he's learning in school and about the new series of books he's reading, Harvey realizes that despite his son's high IQ and ridiculously advanced reading level, Jamie is just short of six years old. He's still a little boy. A little boy who misses his Daddy desperately.
"Please wake up, Daddy," Jamie whispers.
Harvey closes his eyes as he feel tears coming to his eyes when he hears his son's heartfelt plea. Please Mike. If not for me. Do it for him, Do it for the kids. Wake up.
I'm not going to lie, I did tear up a bit while writing this. That never happens when I'm writing. I plan on one maybe two more chapters. That means Mike will soon wake up….or maybe not.
