The next chapter's up, please don't kill me. I know I haven't updated this in a long time. I've just had some problems with thinking of an idea but that's over now.
This just came to me whilst I was sitting in my room watching Captain America. I knew I needed to update this so I just started thinking of random words beginning with R and then rampage came to my head. Then I thought Skandians and then came Will and Horace being stupid. This is the result of my random thoughts so hopefully you will like it.
Disclaimer: I don't own Ranger's Apprentice.
Warning: The characters in this chapter may be a little out of character so I apologise in advance if you don't like it. This is just meant to be a silly story where Will and Horace are being very very stupid.
Chapter 6: R for Rampage
"Will" Halt seethed, "Horace."
"Ok before you have a go at us let me tell you one thing" Will said trying to unsuccessfully keep the fear out of his voice.
Halt raised his eyebrow in an expression Will and Horace didn't find helpful. "What?"
Will looked to his friend, his face turning into an expression of pleas. Horace not so subtlety shook his head, trying to hide the fear he knew was showing on his face. Things had gone wrong, it hadn't meant to happen like this.
Turning back to face his master with a look of pure terror on his face Will said, "It wasn't intended for Erak."
"No, well then all's forgiven" Halt said sarcasm dripping off his tongue. "If it wasn't meant for him, then who was it meant for?"
Will felt his stomach drop, what had he done? That was the last thing he should have said if he wanted to get out of this. He heard Horace let out a small intake of air and felt more than saw him close his eyes in realisation as to what Will had said. Slowly Will opened his mouth and then closed it again, not trusting himself to speak.
"Will?"
Before he even started talking he thought about the options he had.
He could lie. Tell Halt it was meant for a complete stranger. That could work, couldn't it? No Halt could tell when he was lying.
He and Horace could run, again no. How far would they get before Halt caught up with them or they ran into a rampaging Oberjarl.
Tell the truth, what was the worst Halt could do. Throw them in the ocean.
Will almost laughed at the prospect but bit it back just in time. He opened his mouth and this time words came out in a flurry, all of them mixing into one confusing nonexistent word. "ItwasmeantforyoumeandHoracethoughtwecouldgetoneoveronyou."
"There are spaces between words for a reason" Halt said with an almost evil glint in his eyes.
"It was meant for you, me and Horace thought we could get one over on you." Will actually stepped back in line next to his friend.
-LINEBREAK-
36 hours prior to the incident.
Will sat up against the mast of the ship with Horace in front of him propped up against some rope, his sword and shield lying against the warrior's legs. His eyes closed and his body relaxed moving with the rhythm of the ship Will breathed in a huge lung full of the salty sea air.
Horace at almost the exact same time let go a breath in a relaxing sigh. According to David, the captain of this boat, they would arrive in Skandia within the day. For Horace this meant a nice refreshing meal and a soft comfortable bed that didn't rock back and forth as if it was trying to make him fall out onto the floor. That would be nice, that would be good. He might actually wake up not feeling aches and pains from where his body had stayed stiff trying to stay planted in a bed for the night. He couldn't wait to be back on solid ground and neither could Will, Halt either.
It wasn't that he didn't like travelling by boat, he just preferred life on land. Where he could sleep peacefully and have as large a meal as he wanted. Where if he wanted to, he could have a little privacy to just think. On the ship he was in close confines. There was always someone around and you couldn't just go anywhere you wanted off the ship.
Well you could, but Horace didn't fancy a swim in the near freezing waters of the east. That definitely wasn't his cup of tea, or coffee in his case.
"You know," Horace looked up at the sound of his friend's voice. "I can't believe Halt put salt in our coffee" Will said, his face in a mixture of disgust and concentration of not gagging. He still had the taste of his salty brew left in his mouth. For some reason, no matter how much he drank, the taste just wouldn't disappear. It was as if the drink had stuck to every recess of his mouth, reminding him to never joke about Halt's sea sickness again. Ever.
Well he knew it was a bad idea at the time but he just couldn't help himself. This was the one time he had a one over on his mentor, something he could joke about instead of it being the other way around. He was a ranger, a ranger's apprentice, and they all had a close relationship where they could joke about with each other.
Horace had made the mistake of letting a snort of laughter escape his lips at the time and had ended with the same fate. Their favourite beverage destroyed by their sneaky friend.
"I can. He doesn't like people joking about his sickness on boats" Horace said with conviction. "Remember what he threatened to do the last time someone did? They nearly ended up with a helmet full of the contents of his stomach."
"Maybe we should get back at him" Will said to himself.
"No" Horace said sitting up. "That is a bad idea."
"We've had worse ideas. Besides imagine his face if we got back at him."
"I can't because I can see the rational side to this; you can't play jokes on Halt. It's impossible."
"How do you know?"
"Gilan has told me plenty of times how he tried to pull a joke on Halt, only for it to back fire instead. It's a stupid idea."
"Maybe."
-LINEBREAK-
2 hours prior to the incident
"I can't believe we are actually planning this" Horace said as he looked at the ideas Will had written on a piece of parchment.
"Neither can I" Will said as he wrote another idea down.
"But it was your idea!" Horace stressed. Will looked up at him and shrugged his shoulders. Making a mental note not to mess with Will's coffee in the future Horace picked up the parchment and started reading it.
They had a total of four ideas, all of which Horace reminded himself probably wouldn't work. He voiced his opinions to Will. "Why don't we just put salt in his coffee. It would be far easier than any of these" Horace said gesturing at the notes. "It won't end badly and Halt wouldn't kill us after because he did the same thing to us."
"Yes, that's how he will know what we're doing. Haven't you seen him before he drinks his coffee since the ship?" Will asked to which Horace shook his head.
"Watching what others do is what ranger's are best at" Horace said as if that made all the difference.
Will shook his head but carried on anyway. "Since the salt in our coffee joke Halt has been watching us as we make the coffee. He also takes only a small sip at first to make sure there are no unwanted ingredients in there. If we do the same joke on him as he did on us it won't work."
"I guess. It's just… I don't think this is a good idea."
"I think it will work, look let's do number three, it's the easiest to do and will take the least amount of time to set up. One of the oldest tricks in the book but the one Halt would least expect. And we've made a few changes to it." Pushing himself up from the floor and putting the now folded notes in his pocket Will spoke, "If we get the stuff now we could have it ready and set up before Halt comes back from his ride with Erak and Svengal. You get the fish and I will get everything else." With that Will walked out of the room leaving Horace alone. This was definitely going to end badly, no matter what Will thought.
With a sigh Horace got up from the floor, put on his sword, and walked out into the snow. It seemed to have snowed constantly since he, Will, and Halt had arrived in Skandia yesterday afternoon. Horace hated the cold, it was as if the weather knew what he and Will had planned and was taking its revenge on him before he had even done anything.
He headed towards the market where he knew he could buy some fish. Hopefully, if he walked really slowly they would have run out of food by the time he got there. He very suddenly slowed his walk down to a snail's pace but unfortunately for both Horace and Will there was a wide variety of fish on sale. Great.
Horace bought some of the fish with a sigh and decided it was best to breathe through his mouth, the smell of the animal making him want to gag. As he was walking back from the market he ran into Will who had two buckets, one a quarter full of water, the other half full of water. This was getting closer and closer to a death sentence; Halt was going to kill them.
With an audible sigh Horace dropped the three large fish into the bucket only a quarter full before they both walked over to an alley between two houses. Will pulled his Saxe knife from his belt, the blade making a hiss as it rubbed against the leather, and started to cut up the fish. He then started to mush them together before rinsing his hands and knife in the water of the other bucket.
Will bit his lip trying to hold back the contents of his stomach, the smell of the bucket making his stomach role, "Right, you place it above the door as you're the tallest" Will said. Apprehensively Horace picked up the bucket and walked into the room next to the one he and Will had been in ten minutes before. Slowly Horace balanced the bucket on the slightly agar door before slipping between the gap and back out to Will.
"Now all we do is wait" he said.
-LINEBREAK-
Time of the incident
Horace and Will both had their feet up on a log, resting their heads on the sand. They had seen Halt, Erak, and Svengal arrive back ten minutes ago and now they were patiently waiting for their plan to work. Well Horace wasn't as patient as Will but they both seemed relaxed. "Ok, so maybe this wasn't a good idea" Will said as he thought about what they had done.
"I tried to tell you" was all Horace said. A couple of minutes passed before he spoke again, "Now all we can do is wait." Will sat up and watched the entrance to where they were staying and felt his nerves intensify as Halt walked into the house. Five minutes later they calmed down again as Halt walked back out.
Will looked away from the door and laid back down, ignoring what was going on for now. Halt wouldn't be back for at least a couple of minutes.
The problem was someone else was heading towards the house. If Will had kept watching they may have been able to skip what was about to happen and warn Erak what was waiting under the door to Halt's room. Unfortunately they couldn't, they didn't even know the Oberjarl had been looking for Halt, so when they heard the yell of pain and anger come from inside Halt's room they couldn't help but feel slightly shocked. Since when had Halt's voice got so deep?
Like everyone else they stopped what they were doing and looked towards the source of the noise. Both Will and Horace's faces paled in colour as the Oberjarl stepped out into the open, a bucket in hand and his face dripping wet. This wasn't good.
Erak looked about the place for the people who had caused this, as his gaze passed over Will and Horace Will swore he saw an almost feral look in their friend's eyes. This was not good at all.
As quick as a flash Erak dropped the bucket on the floor and stormed off into the town in sought of the perpetrators, screaming all sorts of words you would never repeat in public. What had they done?
-LINEBREAK-
Present time
"It was meant for me," Halt said with a devilish smile, one that filled both Will and Horace with dread. "But it landed on Erak."
Will tried an innocent smile. "I wonder what would happen if I let Erak know, he's still on a rampage looking for the concoctors of this 'joke'" Halt said the smile still there.
Will's eyes widened in terror and so did Horace's.
"But maybe that would be a bit harsh." Will felt his heart rate relax, but only slightly. "Nope" Halt left the room leaving Will and Horace to boil over what they had done and what would happen now.
Ten minutes later, after Will and Horace's mind had thought of all these terrifying punishments, Halt returned with a fuming and smelly Skandian behind him. Erak's beard had started to freeze over and his face was red, from anger or the cold water Will couldn't tell.
Erak looked at the younger adults before slowly walking over. This was going to be fun. He picked the two up by the backs of the collars and pulled them outside into the cold air. The Oberjarl dragged the two over to the sea where his ship was waiting and climbed up, walking over to the edge further out into the sea where it would be deeper.
With a wicked grin he threw Will over the edge into the frosty water and then did the same with Horace. There was a loud splash as they both hit the water and Erak brushed his hands off in accomplishment. This wasn't over yet though. He would have to talk with Halt about ways of getting the two back better.
Will swam to the shore, his entire body wanting to freeze over into an ice block. Ok so he had been wrong, Halt wouldn't throw them into the ocean but Erak would. That was the last time he tried to get back at Halt.
Well in Skandia anyway.
So what did you think? Like always it would be great if you could leave a comment or ideas for future chapters. Thanks to everyone that read this last time and to everyone that reviewed the last chapter: Hibernia12, Phillippa Gordon, moniquebowman, Bright Eyes Illusionist and hey y'all watch this. I really appreciate the reviews. Also another thanks to hey y'all watch this for the advice on how to improve my writing, I'm always looking for ways to do that and hopefully I have used her advice well.
Another little thing about my other story The new Ranger, I know I haven't updated that for a while either. I know what I want to write for the next chapter and future ones after that I just can't seem to actually write it down. I sit down to start it and then my mind goes blank and I hate everything I write. Hopefully I will be over that soon as it will be getting to the good part soon and you all need to know what happens to Gilan. If you haven't read that already it would be great if you could check it out, if not oh well. If you are reading it then I apologise for the lack of updates, I just need to get over this obstacle of not being able to write the chapters.
Anyway I know this author's note was a bit long so I shall leave you to go, I hope you enjoyed the chapter. Until next time, Goodbye.
