'Ello peeps!
So, this is the last chapter of Black as Night. When this is published, it will mark the first story I've completed on FanFiction. It's kind of sad. Sniffle.
Once I've wrapped it up, I will immediately begin work on Tara. No doubt that she wants my writing back.
Anyways, please enjoy, like, favorite, etc. I spent an incredibly long time on this story, and I'd hate for it to go to waste.
And remember kids, Tesla before Edison!
(A/N: I also put a few references to different books. If you find them, tell me in the comments!)
Starfire shot towards Terra's platform with the speed of a bullet. Wearing a fierce look she got to work, kicking and punching with the ferocity of a tiger. The young, cheerful teenage superheroine that was known as Starfire was no longer. Now she was Koriand'r, a powerful Tamaranean warrior. She fought relentlessly, never letting up, never showing mercy for her enemy.
But inside, she was broken.
Robin was the love of her life, one of the things, no, the thing that she loved most about Earth. But now he was dead. And just to rub salt in the wound, he never knew that she felt that way about him.
Yeah. Even if it was the last thing she did, she would see Terra die.
Cyborg lept to Terra, his metal plating pierced in many places. In the spot of his right hand, a large metal club. protruded. He was bruised and bloody, but it didn't matter. With such a risky battle, he would keep fighting until he dropped dead. He started to swing his arm, his club smashing air when Terra dodged each mighty blow.
A blast of black energy shot past Cy's ear and struck Terra the chest, where it promptly exploded, rocketing him and Starfire away from their target. When the smoke cleared, Terra wasn't even fazed.
With a "HAAAAA!" Cyborg changed both of his arms into his trademark sonic cannons and shot a huge blast that hit the pedestal Terra was standing on. She gracefully leaped off a moment before the blue energy hit, which disintegrated the floating slab of rock.
She landed and flung out her hand. Four long spikes popped out of the ground and shot towards the standing Titans. Starfire shot her spike to dust with a starbolt, Cyborg dove to the left and avoided the needle-sharp rock that buried almost its entire length in the opposite wall. Raven teleported to the side, and Beast Boy turned into a Pterodactyl and flew away.
Raven tried breaching Terra's mind with her own. Forming her mental energy into a razor-sharp lance (a la Inheritance Cycle) and launched it towards Terra's mind. For a moment she got a purchase and gleamed inside her feelings. She learned two things. One, she had no qualms about killing each of the titans. In fact, she desperately wanted to kill each of them. And two, her mental force, or Alar, was sharp as a battleaxe. There would be no more breaking into her mind.
Sure enough, she was booted out back into Raven's own brain, which gave her just enough time to feel the vicious impact from a flying kick from Terra herself.
Inside Beast Boy, there was a swelling feeling, like his heart was growing bigger and bigger until it completely filled his chest. He swiftly changed into a bear and charged towards Terra, building up a superhuman amount speed and power until he shouldered the demonic girl with slightly less force than getting hit point-blank with a rocket launcher. She flew head over heels out of the crater until she hit the ferris wheel with a harsh resounding CLANG! that made the exhausted teens wince. BB gently lifted up Raven and spoke.
"Are you alright?" Raven mutely nodded. She had taken a heavy beating. She wore multiple bruises on her torso and face, and there was a nasty welt where Terra kicked her. The others weren't much better.
Starfire was crouched over the broken body of Robin, her hand clenched in his, as she whispered to him softly with the pain in her voice ever so obvious. "You're going to be fine, you're going to be just fine…."
The other three titans stood behind her, despair written on each of their faces. All of them knew how this would end, Starfire and Robin included.
The once-proud teenager known as Robin weakly took hold of Starfire's arm and pulled her close. The poor girl was breaking apart. Tears flowed like rivers down her cheeks. "No, no, no, no, no. Robin…."
The broken teen slowly reached his hand up to his mask and pulled it down, revealing light blue eyes to color of the sky. A strange mixture of pain, pride, and love brimmed in his eyes. He touched Starfire's cheek and said quietly, "Be strong, my love. And not Robin, it's Dick."
Then right behind them, the titans heard a laugh.
Terra was back. From her mouth produced the laugh the teens heard. It was a screeching and cruel laugh, with strange deep undertones. If vultures could laugh, it would sound like Terra.
"Oh, finally! I thought I would be fighting that pathetic little insect for the rest of my life!" Her voice had changed, it was as if two people were talking through Terra's mouth. Her and….
"Trigon," Raven limped towards Terra and faced her. She was weak and it was all too evident, but she stared at Trigon/Terra with steely eyes. "You are not welcome here. Now get out of our friend and leave us alone."
She laughed again. "Oh, Raven. So ignorant, It's almost saddening. You have no idea what kind of power flows through your veins. I didn't know it was possible, that a daughter of a High Demon would actually want to save your puny little friends. With power like this," she raised her hands, and a loud deep sound filled the air. Her fists became surrounded by a bloody red aura. "The world will kneel before me."
The four Titans lined up and readied themselves. They hoped that the combined might of all their weapons hitting her at the same time will bring her down and destroy her once and for all. Yes, there was little chance that they would make it out alive, but what choice did they have? Robin was close to death, and the rest of them were straddling the line between the two worlds. They had cheated death's bony hand so many times, they weren't just straddling the line, they took it and were using it as a jumprope.
Is this how it ends? thought Starfire. Is this finally it? A single tear trickled down from her eye. I'm sorry, Robin.
And right at that, Slade and Night jumped down in the middle of the exchange and started to attack Terra.
The two men held long staffs with a sword blade at each end. The poles were long Magnalium shafts that were hollow. Inside, there was a tiny generator that charged metal wires that twisted around the length of the pole which crackled with electricity. The blades were made of a unique Kryptonium alloy that possess magical properties that all circle around the combat of intergalactic superbeings, not to mention the alloy itself is sharp enough to cut through almost anything. More of the metal wires crisscrossed each other in a waffle pattern all over the blade. The edge glowed with an ethereal, white light.
Both Night and Slade were equally skilled with staffs, so wielding the strange weapons were no problem for them. They moved swiftly, striking as fast as vipers with three times the force. The blades pierced Terra's demonic armor like butter, but the girl just kept on fighting.
Night backflipped gracefully, throwing a trio of death-black shurikens that spun towards their target. They shot into Terra's armor with A dull thud, followed by two more thuds. Terra gasped in pain and the titans brightened, but she sucked it in and let loose a volley of razor-sharp rocks that were tinged with red. Night dodged all of them, but two struck Slade in the shoulder and he screamed in agony. He fell to the ground, writhing. His hands scrambled over his shoulder, trying desperately to yank the spikes out. A few seconds later he was still.
Damnit!
The tear had dried on Starfire's face. After Slade and Night had dropped down and proved that Terra wasn't invincible and she could be hurt, the Titans got a significant morale boost and started fighting with renewed vigor. The presence of the staffs seemed to drain Terra's reflexes, so it was much easier to hit her. Star launched startbolts that burned through Terra's armor and left third-degree burns the size of softballs. Cyborg was putting his club to good use, bashing Terra and striking her back with each mighty blow. Occasionally one of the titans were hurt and had to withdraw. Beast boy was hit by a basketball-sized chunk of stone as a Pterodactyl. He turned back to human sporting nine broken ribs and promptly collapsed on the ground, unconscious. When she saw this, she rushed to BB and started mending his mangled rib cage.
Terra was becoming overwhelmed, she was covered in slash marks and massive bruises, and her armor was basically falling apart. The titans plus Night had a number advantage, and they were using it to the fullest extent. Every time she tried to attack, she was shot by a starbolt, or hit with a sonic blast, or jabbed by the staff in Night's hand.
Eventually, Terra collapsed to the ground, breathing ragged, barely conscious, with wounds all over her body. Raven had worked her magic and healed Beast Boy enough so that he could walk (Though he gasped in pain and cursed whenever he took a step) and the remaining fighters circled their enemy warily, powers at the ready.
Night walked over to to the broken girl and raised his spear. "And so it ends."
When Terra looked up, her eyes were pure red and she spoke fully with Trigon's voice. "No, it does not. It never will. Your pitiful planet will be reduced to a floating cloud of ash, and all of its souls will disappear into my belly. I am immortal!" He boomed the last word. "I will live eternally, and Earth will soon join so many others of its kind."
Starfire spoke up. "No, Trigon. We are only this generation of heroes. There will be more, more of us so-called, pathetic insects. And we will never stop protecting our home."
At that, Night thrust his spear through Terra's neck.
There was no boom, no dramatic noise, no flash of light. The demonic girl simply coughed up blood, took a shuddering last breath, and died.
Another, more scary matter, Jump City was not restored. Its buildings stayed destroyed and its citizens stayed dead.
Night rose and noticed he was alone. The teens were huddled over something at the foot of the crater. He limped over and realized immediately.
Starfire wept over the lifeless body of Robin as the others watched with somber expressions. Her shuddering sobs could be heard from half a mile away. They were so sad, so broken, so full of passion and love, Night wanted to curl up and cry too.
Cyborg reached out and gently closed their fallen leader's eyes. He helped Starfire up, and then embraced her. The others followed suit, eyes closed, tears dripping down their faces.
After a minute, the teens came apart. "What do we do now?" inquired Beast Boy, with no amount of the usual joy and humor in his voice.
Starfire indulged herself in a few more quiet sobs, then wiped the tears away. Her eyes shone with a passion, sadness, and fury no one, even herself, had seen before.
Then to answer Beast Boy's question, she raised her hand and shot Night in the heart with a beam of green light.
