Chapter Twenty – The Mama of the Vongola

Present Day

She would protect her family and her heart. With shoulders free of weight, she began her normal Sunday routine.

Monday dawned beautifully. Standing at her bedroom window, Nana smiled. For the first time in weeks, she felt free. For the first time in years, she felt alive. She knew the world around her and what the people in it did. There were no more secrets.

Today, she would start a new life: a life without secrets.

Reborn woke early. Sipping from a cup of espresso, he made his way to his monitors. Flipping the screens on, he reviewed the comings and goings of those Nono entrusted to him. Satisfied with their activities, he switched to the Sawada residence and watched as Nana prepared breakfast.

He smiled to himself as he watched her carefully measuring coffee grounds. With a small smile on her face, she was humming softly. The hit-man's hope was bolstered by her mood.

If she was happy, maybe she was happy with him. And if she was happy with him, maybe she would say yes.

Drinking the rest of his espresso, Reborn grabbed Leon and left the apartment to find out if he was right.

Tsuna woke late, again. Stumbling down the stairs, he made it to the bottom without falling. Rushing into the kitchen, he froze at the sight of his mom softly humming as she prepared breakfast. Shaking himself from his thoughts, he approached her.

"Mom?"

"Hm, Tsu-kun?" she asked as she turned to him, spatula in hand.

Blinking, he wondered out loud, "Should I stay home in case Reborn shows up?"

His mother's face lit up as she grinned widely. Patting his head with her free hand, she answered sweetly, "No, Tsu-kun. Mama's going to be ok." Leaning forward, she gave him a quick peck on the cheek. "You're going to be late for school."

Eyes wide, Tsuna grabbed a piece of buttered toast, gave his mom a peck on her cheek and rushed out the door.

As his feet hit the pavement of the street in front of his home, Tsuna thought, 'If my mom is happy, then I am happy.' Yet, his Hyper Intuition warned him that it wouldn't be easy… for him.

As Reborn traveled through town, he stopped at two stores. Satisfied with his purchases, he continued to the Sawada residence.

Ding. Dong.

The doorbell rang as Nana placed the last pancake on Fuuta's plate. After placing the dishes in her hands on the counter and checking the pockets of her apron, she turned for the door. As she passed Fuuta, Lambo and I-Pin, she gently patted each on their head.

Taking a deep breath, Nana opened the door. With a wide smile, she took in the sight before her. Ren-kun was dressed in his usual black suit and fedora. Today, his fedora was tipped away from his face and he was holding a bouquet of white and red tulips out to her.

Blushing, she took the flowers and stepped back for him to enter her home. Closing the door, she turned to him. Silence filled the room as the stared at each other.

Her blush deepening, Nana led the way to the sofa. Motioning for him to sit, she did the same.

Reborn could only stare at Nana. He knew he needed to talk, but he was wary of his own words. Sarcasm and directives would not help him to woe her. So, he remained silent and waited for her to speak.

"Um, Ren-kun," Nana asked tentatively from the seat beside him, hands in her lap.

The hitman smiled and waited for her to continue.

Nana swallowed. Ren-kun's silence was increasing her nervousness. Slipping her hand into her apron pocket, she pulled out a small box and handed it to him.

As his fingers slipped around it, Lambo came running out of the kitchen. "Mama! Lambo wants to slide!"

I-Pin and Fuuta followed behind. "I-Pin, too," the small girl added.

Fuuta looked between Ren-kun and Nana before grabbing the younger children's hands. "Mama, may I take them to the park?" he asked.

Grateful for the young man's assessment of the situation, Nana nodded. "Yes, please," and as they left through the door, she added, "Be careful."

Reborn tried not to frown when Lambo interrupted his moment with Nana. He barely managed to restrain himself. The Lightning guardian would be punished.

As Nana spoke the children that had adopted her as their mother, Reborn examined the box he was given. He was surprised to find that it was the same box he had given to her less than a week ago.

When Nana's attention returned to him, he smiled at her. "May I?" he asked, gesturing to the box.

At her nod, he opened the box. He pulled out his silver ring and chain, revealing another ring. Stunned, he pulled the small silver engagement ring out of the box. The 18 karat diamond sat upon a band made of silver braids intertwining with smaller diamonds. It looked brand new, but Reborn knew it wasn't. Twenty years ago he had given that ring to her.

Nana watched as Ren-kun pulled the rings from the box. Her stomach was in knots as she whispered, "Will you marry me?"

The smirk that preceded Ren-kun's answer made Nana smile. "Nana-chan, of course."

Ring. Ring.

Before either could react, the phone rang. Elated, Nana jumped up to answer the phone. "Moshi moshi," she greeted.

"Mama! I'm getting married!" a woman's voice announced to her.

"Bianchi?" Nana queried.

Giggling, the other woman spoke, "Yes, mama, it's Bianchi."

Nana smiled and exclaimed "Congratulations!" Then, before the purple haired assassin could reply, she added, "Me too!"

Reborn continued to sit on the sofa as Nana chatted enthusiastically into the phone. Briefly, he wondered what he had gotten himself into.

Tsuna, who had been sleeping in class, sat up suddenly and groaned. He had just realized that if his mother said yes, his sadistic home-tutor would become his step-father.
