and high school.
There was a flash of white, and images flashed before the Guardian's eyes. The images slowed, fading in slowly, followed by sound. The four squinted, trying to make out the scene before it finally faded into view, followed by a soft voice that said:
January 27th, 1709
The fourteen year old Overland twins and their sister, no older than nine, sat at a table in a small kitchen. The walls were made of logs, and the door made of a light brown wood. The floor was cover in dirt, obviously unkempt, and the fireplace covered in soot and ashes.
The twins sat on opposite ends of the table with their eyes closed, one of them sporting a bruise on their cheek, while their sister sat on the side of the table them; her eyes flicking back and forth between the two.
"Ready…" Emma said. "Set… Go!" She giggled.
The twins' eyes shot open, and they stared intently at each other, a serious look on each of their faces.
After minutes of silence, the twin on the left threw his arms up in the air and made a sound of disappointment. "Ugh! I give up, you win Jack!" He said to his brother.
Jack, the one with the bruise, laughed and closed his eyes, rubbing them with the heels of his palms. "You can't beat the master, Jake."
Jakoby looked at Emma. "Okay, what are the scores?"
Emma grinned. "Racing: Jakoby 2, Jack 3. Snow eating: Jakoby 1, Jack 4. Quiet contest: Jakoby 5, Jack zero. Staring contest: Jakoby 2, Jack 3."
"Ha!" Jakoby said. "We're tied, Jack, you're not winning!"
Jack rolled his eyes and leaned back in his chair. "I will be soon." he teased.
Jakoby scoffed. "You're full of it, isn't he Emma?"
Emma giggled.
"Hey!" Jack said, looking at his little sister. "Don't side with him!"
"What should we do next?" Emma asked eagerly.
Jack ruffled his overgrown brown hair. It went past his ears now, almost reaching his shoulders, but still completely untamed. He shrugged. "It's Jake's turn to pick."
Emma looked at Jakoby. "Um-" He started, but jumped up when the door opened suddenly and David stumbled in. The siblings quickly focus their attention on something else. Jack busied himself in scratching at the table, while Jakoby picked at the fringe of his shirt sleeve and Emma played with her long brown hair. Luckily, David took no notice in them and stumbled into the living room.
Jack shot up from the table and looked out the window, before turning back to his brother and sister. "Let's go outside," He whisper with a smile.

"Jack! Psst!" A whisper pierced through the darkness in the room.
"Jack!" The whisper again, and this time Jack was aware of a small form crawling up onto him. Small hands grasped the sleeping boy's shoulders, shaking him. "Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!" The voice begged eagerly.
Jack groan and flipped over. "Emma…" He said all groggy-like. "Go back to sleep."
Emma sigh and flopped onto her brother. "I just can't!" She said dramatically. "The sky's awake," She sighed. "So I'm awake! So we have to play!" She flung her arms over her forehead.
Jack rolled his eyes and pushed Emma off his bed. She landed on the floor with an "Oof!"
"Play by yourself," Jack said, still tired. Emma crawled back up onto the bed quickly and pried open one of Jack's eyes. "Do you wanna build a snowman?" She asked with a sly smile.
Jack opened his eyes and smiled at Emma.
Moments later, the two were racing down the stairs, Emma eagerly saying "C'mon, c'mon, c'mon!" While Jack tried to quiet her.
They tossed on their coats and fur boots before running out into the night, Emma giggling excitedly. Jack threw some snow up in the air so it floated down onto Emma. "This is amazing!" She squealed and Jack laughed along with her.
They built a snowman, as Emma eagerly insisted, before running into the woods and finding a big snow pile to slide down. Emma laughed as Jack pushed her down, and she tumbled then landed in a snow bank, Jack following soon after. Jack covered Emma in snow while she flailed around, laughing the whole time.
"Shh!" Jack said, but was still laughing. "You'll wake the whole village!"
Emma push a small hand over her smiling mouth, in attempt to stop laughing.
"We should probably go back, it will be dawn soon," Jack said.
"Aww, do we have to?" Emma whined.
Jack smiled and ruffled her hair. "Yeah, sorry Em, maybe we can do this again sometime."
Emma smiled again and took Jack's hand as they headed back to the little log house they called home.
May 20th, 1709
Jakoby, Emma, and Jack sat outside their house, their backs pressed against the wood of the house, their head tilted slightly to the left, thoughtful looks on all of their faces.
"You can so tell they're related." Bunny commented.
Tooth nodded. "Same hair, same eyes, same expressions."
"Hey Emma," Jakoby said.
"Yes?" Emma asked, looking up at Jakoby.
"Want to hear a story?" he asked, a smile creeping onto his face.
Emma sat on her knees and bounced with excitement. "Really? Right now? Please, please, please!" She begged, looking between the twins.
Jack looked at Jakoby with a sly smile and nodded. The twins sat side by side with their legs crossed and Emma in front of them with an eager look on her face.
"Once upon a time," Jack said, gesturing with his hands. "There was a huge kingdom, full of laughter, and children, and markets."
"The kingdom was beautiful, and was known for their beautiful queen," Jakoby continued. "Every man in the kingdom wanted to marry her, but she already had a husband and they were with child."
Jack spoke again. "When their child was born, it was a little girl with beautiful golden blonde hair. They named her Rapunzel. To celebrate Rapunzel's birth, the whole kingdom launch a thousand lights into the sky."
Emma smiled.
"But," Jakoby said, "When the princess was older, she was kidnapped by an evil woman."
Emma gasped.
"She was taken into the forest, and the king and queen and all the kingdom thought they would never see her again," Jack continued. "But what the evil woman didn't know, was that the forest was full of magic, from the lights that were released years ago."
"The princess was sad, but she believed in the magic with all her heart, and it showed her how to get home." Jakoby said. "She followed the magic for a very long time, and she started to think that maybe there wasn't any magic at all, and she was just being silly."
Jack spoke again. "So she gave up."
Emma shook her head.
"But then," Jakoby said. "A beautiful man, named Hayden, emerged from the woods and found Rapunzel. Rapunzel fell in love with this man, and he led her home."
"Years past," Jack said. "And they were married and has a child and named her Juliet. But then Juliet got very sick, and Rapunzel got very sad again."
"And one day, while Rapunzel was praying for something to help her daughter, she saw the magic from the forest again." Jakoby said. "Rapunzel watched at the magic healed her daughter."
"Rapunzel grew older, and as she did, she lost the wonder that used to light up her eyes. She forgot some of her best memories from when she was young. But she never stopped believing in the magic, because she knew it was always there even when she started to give up hope, and forget her dreams." Jack finished.
The three sat in silence for a moment, Jack smiling softly at Emma as she stared at the grass, running the story over in her head. She looked up at her brothers and smiled.
July 17th, 1709
"Let's go, guys!" Emma said eagerly, pulling her brothers out the door.
"Okay, okay, Emma!" Jakoby laughed as they walked out the door.
The two boys had their hair cut again, so it was short, spiky and untamed.
The twins had to run to keep up with Emma who was running towards the woods. She jumped over logs and ducked under branches, Jack and Jakoby were having a hard time trying to keep up with her small form. Jack was smiling and laughing at the girl's energy, while Jakoby was rolling his eyes.
Emma burst into a clearing where a few other kids were standing and immediately jumped at one of girls and hugged her. "Elsa!" She squealed.
The blonde hugged her back and laughed. "Hi Emma, it been forever!"
Jack smiled at Emma while Jakoby went over to some of his friends. After a moment Jack followed.
"How's David?" One of their friends, Chris, asked.
Jakoby ignored him and turned to talk to another boy with curly hair, Peter.
Jack looked at Chris. "Living hell. He's been leaving us alone more recently, but almost everything sets him off."
Chris shook his head. "You know you can live with us, right?"
Jack sighed. "I wish, but that will never happen, honestly."
Chris scratched the back of his head. "Yeah, your probably right." He glanced over at Emma. "How's your sister holding up?"
"She doesn't get the brunt of it, Jake and I try to keep her away from him."
"That's smart."
Jack nodded, then sighed. "I just wish there wasn't even a reason to hide her from him. I wish we lived with someone we could trust."
The world simmered, then disappeared into light.
