September 3rd, 1709
The three Overland sibling were walking through the woods together, surrounded by orange and red leaves, falling around them. The sun was up, just after dawn, giving the forest an orange-ish glow. Emma ran ahead, jumping in leaf piles and laughing, while Jakoby and Jack walked farther back, watching their little sister.
The twins walked at the same pace, with their hands in their pockets, it was almost shocking how identical they were.
"Emma!" Jakoby called.
Emma looked back after jumping over a log and landing in a pile of leaves.
"Be careful," He laughed.
Emma smiled and tossed a bunch of leaves in the air. "I know!"
Jakboy shook his head and Jack laughed, then nudged him. "Let her have fun, you've got to lighten up Jakoby."
"I know, its just-" Jakoby sighed.
"You're worried about her," Jack said. "That's okay."
Jakoby stopped walking. "We've been out here for a while, we should probably head back."
Jack sighed. "Come on, Emma!" He called.
Emma looked up and pouted before running to her brothers.
November 22nd, 1709
Jakoby and Jack sat in their small wooden room in their small wooden house. Emma wasn't there, and it was dark out. Jack was hanging off the bed upside down with his head touching the floor.
Emma suddenly burst into the room, and threw herself into Jakoby's arms, who was closest to the door. She broke down into sobs, shocking both Jack and Jakoby.
Jack jumped up and rushed over to her.
"What's wrong?" Jack asked urgently, getting down on his hands and knees. "Did he hurt you?" He tried to pulled Emma off of Jakoby so he could look her over but she shook her head and wiped her eyes.
"What is it than?" Jakoby asked.
Emma took a deep shuddering breath and said, "He's going to sell me to the Goldbergs." She broke into another round of sobs.
Jakoby ran his fingers through her hair, whispering in her ear and trying to get her to calm down. Jack stared at his hands on the floor before his face contorted and he clenched his fists. He roared and bolted out of the room, down the stairs and into the kitchen room where David stood, looking into the fireplace.
"Why the hell would you sell her to the Goldbergs?!" Jack yelled at him.
David looked at Jack with a sneer. "Because I need the money." he replied.
"Yeah, but she's not even ten, she can't get married yet!" Jack argued.
"Lower your voice, boy," David growled, taking a step towards Jack.
"And if I don't?" Jack challenged, shoving his nose right in David's face. Jakoby had come down stairs at this point, and had grabbed Jack's arm to pull him away.
"Jack, stop," Jakoby whispered.
Jack sighed and glared at David, who was smugly looking at the boys. "Who is she even engaged to?" Jack asked quietly.
"Caleb." David said, crossing his arms.
"CALEB!" Jack roared lunging towards David and punching him. "Caleb is older than you!"
David pushed Jack down to the floor. "Don't you dare yell at me boy!" He shouted, then lifted Jack up by the collar. He pushed Jack's face into a wall, and yelled. "On your knees!"
Jack growled and tried to stand up, but David pushed him down again, Jack's back facing David. Jack braced his hands on the wall and a belt whipped across his back. He screamed, and Jakoby bolted into action, trying to rip the belt away from David. David easily pushed Jakoby away, and then struck Jack twice more, each time Jack letting out a shout and curling in on himself.
Jakoby grabbed a chunk of wood from next to the fireplace and tried to throw it at David, the the man grabbed Jakoby's wrist and shoved him backwards.
Jakoby landed against the fireplace, on his side, and screamed, clutching his face and rolling away. Jack turned from where he was to see through blurry eyes that the left half of Jakoby's face had been burnt, and pieces of wood had spilled out of the fireplace.
David was yelling something as Jack tried to stand, but his head was pounding and he was losing a lot of blood. Jakoby had gotten on his knees, his face contorted as he tried to stand. Jack noticed a fire had started to spread, and a rush of adrenaline shot through him. Emma was still upstairs.
"Jake!" Jack shouted over the growing fire. It had consumed most of the kitchen by now. "Get Emma!" Jakoby hauled himself up, still clutching his face, and ran towards the stairs.
The fire had spread towards the living room and up the walls toward the ceiling. Jack coughed and covered his mouth and nose with his shirt. He tried to see through the smoke, and jumped out of the way from part of the ceiling collapsing. He didn't know where David was. he made it towards the living room where Emma was running down the stairs, followed by Jakoby.
The stairs started to creak and groan, and Jack shouted, "Jump!"
Emma jumped towards Jack, right as the stairs collapsed, Jakoby going with them. "Outside!" Jack commanded Emma. Emma ran out the door, coughing.
Jack ran to the collapsed stairs and searched for Jakoby. He found him trapped under planks of wood. "Jake! Reach up!" Jack shouted.
"I can't!" He said.
The ceiling started to break above them at the flames grew denser. "Hurry!" Jack said, reaching down over a bunch of wood to Jakoby.
Jakoby reached up, trying to get to Jack. Jack leaned over the wood, holding the wall next to him. He let of a frustrated groan as the ceiling started to splinter. He looked with wide eyes at Jakoby who was trying with everything he had to reach Jack.
Their fingers were inches apart when the burning ceiling collapsed.
Everything else was a blur. Someone grabbed him and pulled Jack from the house. Emma was waiting outside with a bunch of adults. He remembered someone telling him David was dead. Emma was crying. He vaguely was aware of someone treating the whip marks on his back and the burns on his feet.
He was getting dizzy, there were black spots in his vision.
The last thing he remembered was that it started to snow.
Oops.
I killed Jakoby... :}
Sorry if this chapter seemed rushed.
