Clary jumped in next to Jace and stared at him with wide eyes. "What was that?!"
Jace just sighed. "Vampires, obviously. You don't see many people walking around sucking the blood out of normal people."
"Vampires?! But those are just silly myths."
"Uh, no, obviously not."
Isabelle turned around and glared at Jace. "Now is not the time, Jace. We'll take her to the Institute and explain everything to her there."
Clary shook her head. "I can't. I really need to be getting home to my mother, she's probably worried sick. Maybe we can stop by after school tomorrow?" Isabelle nodded and turned back around.
Clary looked down at the marking on her palm. She traced it with her index finger, then looked at Jace. "What is this?" she asked. "It's a rune. A Mark." Clary just looked confused. "Uh-huh…and what's that thing that you drew it on with?" "A stele. Every Shadowhunter should have one."
"Every Shadowhunter? What is that?" Jace looked slightly annoyed. "We hunt demons." "Demons? But they're not real! How are they real?" "Goddamnit Clary, could you have any more questions in you?!"
She look hurt, and Jace immediately regretted it. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to lash out on you like that.."
Clary just nodded and looked straightforward as they pulled up by her house. "Goodbye, everyone…" Isabelle and Alec waved, but Jace just watched her get out of the car.
Clary unlocked the door to her house and walked in. "Mom?" Her mother ran down the stairs and hugged her tightly. "Oh thank the Angel your alive…Clary, I have something for you. Clary nodded and followed her mom to her room.
Her mom pulled out a long, thin box. She opened the box and pulled out a medal thing. What did Jace call it…? That's right, a stele, Clary thought.
"This is for you." She handed it to her Clary.
Clary stared at her mom in amazement. "But… why would I need this?"
Her mom took Clary's hands in her, and said firmly,
"Because every Shadowhunter needs one."
