Chapter 13

I do not own The Avengers in any way.

After listening to her father tell her about her mother's death, Madison went in search of Steve. She found him in the gym. She lightly knocked on the wall.

He turned and smiled when he saw her.

When she didn't smile back, he knew something was wrong.

"What's wrong?" he asked walking up to her.

"The board let me go. I'm no longer an agent for S.H.E.I.L.D", she told him.

"Oh", was all Steve could say.

"How am I going to make it?" she asked him.

He smiled and kissed her forehead.

"How am I supposed to be a civilian? School? Forget it. What am I supposed to do while my father is away?" she asked.

"You sound like a soldier", Steve told her as he unwrapped his knuckles.

"Because I am, Steve", she said.

"What age did you start?" he asked her.

"I started training when I was 13. Fury and my father wouldn't let me go on a mission until I turned 16", she told him.

"But that would mean…?" Steve said.

"Yep. Manhattan was my first real mission", she said, "But it was…thrilling and exciting". She sounded like Bucky when she talked like that. "I don't want glory or anything", she said, "I just like knowing that I saved some innocent people from being killed".

A few days later, a helicopter took the remaining avengers to Stark tower.

Stark had done some improvements, but Madison had been unconscious for 3 months. "Katniss! You're okay!" Stark said.

"Good to see you too, Stark", she said.

It turned out that Stark wanted to hold a gala in honor of the Avengers, so all of them, minus Thor, were required to attend.

Madison convinced her father to let her go to their apartment in Brooklyn to pick up a few things. She grabbed Steve's hand and dragged him out of the tower with her.

"Where are we going?" Steve asked.

"The apartment, silly", she said.

Steve blushed.

Madison rolled her eyes and said, "Not like that. I want you to show you around. In case you ever want to…hang out".

The two went to the apartment.

"Huh", Steve said.

"What?" Madison asked, slipping the key into the lock.

"I live two buildings down", he said.

"Typical Fury call", she said, "He moved you in close, so my father could keep an eye on you".

"You're still talking like a soldier", Steve told her.

She blushed and opened the door.

The apartment was small, but big enough for two people to live in.

It was sparsely decorated, but Madison and her father weren't there that often.

Madison dropped her keys in a bowl near the door, like her father taught her. She dropped her bag on the couch and went into her room, leaving Steve in the living room.

He noticed pictures on the mantle.

One with Clint teaching Madison to shoot, he assumed this one was snapped by a fellow agent.

Another showed Clint and Madison at the zoo. He was lifting her up so she could feed a giraffe a cracker.

Then there was a single one with Madison standing in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Her brown eyes were sparkling with happiness.

So caught up in the pictures, Steve didn't hear Madison enter the living room. She cleared her throat and he turned around.

Madison had thrown her hair up in a messy bun. She had on a tank top and a pair of short shorts.

Steve was suddenly reminded of her age. He assumed that was what teenagers these days wore, but it was enough to make him blush as she bent over to see what was in the fridge.

"Well, there's absolutely nothing to eat in this place. So I'm thinking pizza", she said. She grabbed her cell phone and ordered a large cheese pizza. "Well, since it's Brooklyn, it should take close to thirty minutes, so what do you want to do until then?" she asked him.

"Umm…" Steve said, his gaze drifting down to her legs. He blushed when he heard Madison's giggle.

She dragged him over to the couch. She moved her bag and sat down. She pulled Steve down and placed her feet in his lap.

Madison turned on the TV.

The Hunger Games was on.

Steve noticed how she twirled her hair idly.

Madison was so engrossed in the movie, that she didn't hear the doorbell ring.

Steve got up and answered the door. He took the pizza and paid for it. He went back to Madison and set the pizza on the coffee table.

She snapped out of her trance when he opened the box. "God, it's been so long since I've had pizza. S.H.E.I.L.D. requires that their agents eat healthy", she said as she took a bite. After swallowing, she noticed Steve staring at her. "What?" she asked her.

He leaned in and captured her lips with his.

Madison dropped her pizza back into the box and climbed on top of him.

Steve's hands stayed on her hips as hers traveled into his hair. He gasped when Madison started to rock her hips into his. He suddenly pushed her back. "I…I can't", he told her.

Madison nodded and slid off his lap, back onto the couch.

They ate pizza and watched movies all night.

Steve found the courage to place his hand on her calf.

Madison smiled, but said nothing.
