READ ON AHAHAHA! *cough*
Death looked at his new appearance in Iris's bathroom mirror. To him, the clothes look silly, and just downright humiliating. He gave a silent sigh and took off the hat, growling in annoyance as he had to smooth down his hair that was sticking up.
"I am glad Strife is not here to see this..." He grumbled to himself.
"Strife's your brother, right? Or at least one of the two?" Iris's voice slightly startled the rider, and he turned to see her leaning in the doorway.
"His amber eyes narrowed slightly, "Yes, that is correct." He crossed his arms, "It was my understanding that you knew nothing about me... Could it be that you were lying?"
Iris placed the back of her hand to her forehead and made a dramatic broadway voice, "Oh goodness now! Me? A lyer? Ha! Oh that tickles my whiskers!" She snorted at Death's annoyed glare as she imagined him scowling and shrugged, "No, I've been reading up on you and your siblings. I didn't go to the library for nothing, you know?"
"There are records of us here on Earth?" Sure, one human might have seen one of them on occasion between every century or so and recorded it, but it seemed impossible for anyone to have detailed information on the horseman.
Iris gave a deep breath and absentmindedly rubbed the back of her neck, "Well... I guess I should tell you something before we get into detail... It's nothing big.. Well kinda..." She trailed off, and slightly shrunk down when Death glared down at her.
"Well? What is it?" He snapped.
"Now, now, don't freak out... It may be a shock so it's ok if you need to sit down," She stuttered, holding up her hands submissively.
"Stop stalling. Spit it out!"
"In this world, you. don't. exist!"
"What?" Death raised an eyebrow, stepping back. He wasn't expecting that in the least. That was very anticlimactic, for Death was expecting something more... Well more. And besides, what rubbish, he was standing right there! He did exist!
"I told you, and don't accuse me of lying. In this world, you're just a character in a video game."
"What is a video game?"
Iris waved her hand dismissively, "It's a form of technology here where you control a fictional character in a series of multiple moving images. In other words, it's how people can live two lives."
"Prove it," Death snarled at the small woman. He wasn't convinced.
The childish rebelliousness returned to Iris's crystalline eyes, "There's nothing to prove. If you don't just believe me then you're just gonna be stuck wondering!"
Death's eyes became livid, thoroughly fed up with this woman's stubborn attitude, "I need those books."
Iris waved her hand around again, "What you NEED is a shower. When was the last time you took one anyway?"
"Stop changing the subject! Give me those books."
"Why should I?"
"Because if you don't, you will find my blade in your chest faster than you can even blink."
Iris starred at him, glancing once down at his scythes before suddenly slamming the bathroom door in his face. With a frustrated growl, Death burst out of the bathroom and ran outside after her. Iris was already halfway towards the stables but Death caught up quickly. Iris didn't have the head start she had when she ran from Death the first time.
When he got close enough, Death tightly gripped Iris's shoulder and spun her around to face him, causing her to trip on her own feet and fall to the ground. Without hesitating, Death was standing above her, one hand grabbing her shirt and another holding harvester.
"Tell me, Iris. I am done just sitting around all day doing absolutely nothing!" He paused as he watched the woman's face.
Her eyes were as wide as possible with fear. She was shaking, but not from the cold. Tears were flowing freely down her cheeks like a waterfall, and her breathing was sporadic.
He let go of her shirt and let her fall back again. In an instant she scrambled away from him and sat back against the nearby fence.
There wa silence between them as Death watched her, confused. She slightly rocked herself as she kept crying and tried to calm her breathing.
She flinched violently when Death took a step forward, and tried to move back even farther.
"No! N-no... Please no!" She cried, and Death was even more baffled. What had he done to scare her into hysterics? Heh, well this was a better alternative to her stubbornness, but he was never going to get answers with her like this.
Suddenly, Iris sprinted away, disappearing into the forest, and Death sighed in frustration. It didn't matter, he could easily find the books himself, right?"
Wrong. He searched everywhere in the house, and no books about him or his siblings came up. He even invaded the privacy of her bedroom, but still found nothing.
He sighed in irritation for probably the tenth time that day as he closed a kitchen cabinet door. That girl was either very clever or lying. And by god it better not be the latter or he won't hold back next time.
Death turned to the front door as Foalen (he'd heard the mutt's name plenty of times from Iris, as well as all her other animals) began to whine while looking out the window. When Death opened the door the large dog sprinted out across the field and into the forest, much like his owner.
The rider frowned behind his mask. he had a bad feeling about this.
I ran. Yeah, I'm an idiot, but I ran. And I didn't stop until I tripped on my own numb feet. why was I so stupid?! Running here into the forest with nothing on but a turtleneck, sweatpants, light gloves, and wool socks.
I panicked alright? When Death threw me to the ground, I really thought he was going to...
I shook my head as I sat on a large protruding root. I'm pretty sure I'd passed my property line a while back, because I had no idea where I was.
"Why am I so stupid?" I quietly berated myself, burying my face in my hands as the tears began to flow again. I could have easily just told him where my books were and be done with it. But... Something stopped me... Was it because he shouldn't read them? What would happen? Would I permanently destroy the space time continuum (whatever that was) like in the movies?
My self questioning was cut short as I heard running footsteps nearby. Quickly, I slid off the tree root and into a trunk indention. But as Foalen suddenly burst out of the brush, furiously sniffing the ground, I sighed in relief.
"Here boy!" I called, waving my arm out of the tree as the overjoyed mutt ran to me. I happily buried my cold fingers into his warm fur as he licked at my face.
"I guess it's time to stop moping and get back home," I sighed, standing up as I saw little snowflakes flutter down from the darkening sky.
With my furry companion padding along beside me, we started to slowly make our way home. I used Foalen's nose to direct us, but I still had to walk slowly due to my numb feet. I lost count on how many times I grumbled a curse or two when I stepped on a bramble.
I snarled in absolute frustration when I tripped into a mud marsh, the gooey, freezing substance going up to just above my knees. Foalen barked at me from the edge of the puddle, and I twisted my upper body to face him.
"Today's j-just not my lucky da-ay," I stuttered. With an awkward 'Meh' I threw my arms forward as far as they could reach, not quite reaching to Foalen all the way.
The mutt whined and stretched his head to my hands, and I quickly grabbed onto his leather collar.
"Ok boy, pull!" I ordered, and as trained, Folane began to walk backwards. As my legs were freed, I giggled quietly at the loud 'splooch' that followed. my amusement faded quickly as we continued on our way.
I coughed violently as I stumbled through the snow. It had gotten dark quickly and the snow had picked up. My pants were stiff with dry mud and my feet were throbbing painfully as well as my fingers. My chattering teeth were beginning to give me a headache.
Finally, I stopped and painfully sat close to a large tree, trying to get any warmth from it. Foalen growled softly and tugged at my shirt but I ignored him.
Suddenly, Foalen barked at me and ran off, out of sight.
I called after him, "Foalen!" But my voice was quiet and it hurt. I sighed and practically hugged the tree, "Buttface.. Tree... You're my only f-friend..."
Death stood out on the porch as he lit the lantern that was hanging by the door. As it's light flowed into Iris's front yard, Death shook out the match before staring out into the dark. Snow blanketed the ground and thick clouds blocked the light of the moon.
Death started and grabbed his scythes as something suddenly ran out of the forest at top speed, but soon calmed down once he recognized Foalen's deep, loud bark.
The dog ran up to him, however before Death could do anything, Foalen ran back across the field again. When the rider didn't follow, Foalen repeated his actions, still barking uncontrollably.
Death abruptly understood, "Where is she?" The dog whined and resumed barking, running back towards the forest before stopping halfway and looking back to him.
Quickly, the kinslayer put harvester back in their holsters before running out to the stables. Despair was already at the door, and Death threw off his blanket before mounting the stallion bareback.
He looked down at Foalen as they came out of the stables, "Lead the way."
The dog barked at the order and sprinted out into the forest, Death and Despair following quickly behind.
Because of his dark surroundings, Despair had to dodge multiple oncoming trees, but seemed relieved when his rider pulled his back to a stop by his mane.
Death slid off his mount and walked over to where Foalen was licking a snow covered figure. Without a work, he knelt down and brushed Iris's frozen hair away from her face. She was still alive; her blue lips were moving with her chattering teeth and shallow breath clouds appeared but disappeared quickly.
As gently as he could, he slid off one of Iris's gloves to inspect her hands. He sighed in frustration as he saw slight bluish black discoloration.
Iris didn't seem to notice being picked up bridal style, nor when she was sat in front of Death on Despair's back. In all truth, she seemed completely out of it.
That was, until she gave a large shudder as they were making their way back. Death scowled slightly when she tried to wrap her hands in his shirt for warmth, but it seemed her numb fingers wouldn't cooperate.
"You'll be home soon..." He grumbled, ignoring her when she found a coat pocket of his to stuff her hands in.
" 's cold..." She whispered, and Death almost didn't hear her. He didn't answer, they were already at the stables.
After putting Despair back in his stall, Death carried Iris back into her house and thought of what he should do.
Gently, he set the now sleeping woman on her couch and got as many blankets and pillows as he could get and set them next to the fireplace. After taking off Iris's socks and gloves, he put her in the mound of blankets before he himself took a seat. He rolled his eyes as Foalen buried himself next to Iris and curled up at her side. Everything was quiet, even Dust, who was perched on the mantle above the fireplace.
Something light and soft jumped up onto Death's lap and the rider looked down to see Coda, the fluffy, spoiled black cat.
Sighing, he absentmindedly pet the feline's head as he glanced at Iris. Something in his gut tightened. He had an even worse feeling about this...
