Chapter 10

Trunks closed his eyes, praying that Kami would give him strength for however long it would take to get through this awkward situation with Pan. He was also having an inner battle with himself on how much truth he wanted to reveal, or if he should take advantage of the fact that he could make this a clean slate between them. If he chose the latter, and she regained her memories… What would the consequences be? Would it cause more damage to their already fragile relationship? If he chose the former… Would it leave him feeling guilty with a heavy weight in his heart and mind?

He looked at her, blue meeting the endless depths of black- confusion and curiosity. It was in that moment that he realised what a fool he had been. Many months of his father's stubborn cells, and what did he have to show? A life filled with emptiness and misery. But, what he regretted the most was that he didn't know her, and now he was left with the task of helping her remember. Yet, all he wanted to do was help her remember to forget…

She was no longer a child, even though at the moment she thought she was. She was a young women, and he had to embrace the fact, as well as make up for past mistakes on his part. While his subconscious was still debating on what to do, he had already decided to take it one step at a time. Kill two birds with one stone- rolling his eyes at how cliché that sounded, but it was as clear an explanation as any…

"Why are you making so many faces, and rolling your eyes?" She frowned, but the perplexed look in her eyes told him it was just out of curiosity, not anger.

"I'm trying to assess how best to explain your," he gestured between them, careful to keep his eyes on hers, "our situation. Especially with your inquisitive hands squeezing those…" he muttered, pointing at her chest.

"Oh… sorry…" She moved her hands away, pulling the blanket up to her neck.

"Better..." He smiled, relieved.

"So…" She paused as a young nurse entered, wheeling in a tray with food- moving it next to the bed, so the tray was hanging across Pan's legs.

"Hello, I hope you're hungry. I've brought some soup and jelly. It's best to start with purees and we can work you up to solids later." She smiled kindly before turning to Trunks. "Make sure she eats everything."

He nodded and watched her leave. "You heard her… eat."

Pan breathed in as the fragrant scent of the soup invaded her senses, causing her stomach to growl… She was ravenous, and had no problem complying. Literally wolfing down the soup and jelly.

Trunks sat back, amused and happy. It felt somewhat normal again… Yet, nostalgic at the same time- watching her be so childlike and carefree…

"I'm glad to see your healthy appetite has returned." He laughed.

She pouted, placing the empty jelly bowl on the tray. "Do they not know that I'm part Saiyan…?"

"You have been malnourished for a long time, Angel…" He whispered scornfully. "It's best you start slowly. I promise we'll have a feast when you're healthy again."

"What do you mean?"

"You haven't been eating well lately…"

"Why? Don't we have enough food?"

"We have…" he sighed. "Look, a lot has happened over the years, and it's kind of hard to explain. I also don't want to flood you with everything at once. Once I know more about your condition, and whether your memories will come back or not… I'll have some clue on how to fill you in… For now, let's start with the little details, okay?"

"Okay… Trunks?"

"Yeah…"

"Have I done something bad?"

"Why would you ask that?" The atmosphere suddenly became very serious.

"It's just… I can't help but feel that you're worried about something… And, I don't know how I ended up here… so sick… It just seems like I've troubled you."

He got up and swiftly moved the tray away from the bed, sitting beside her- under the blanket- with his arm around her shoulder. He kissed the top of her head, inhaling the scent of her oily hair… the faint smell of Vanilla barley there.

"The only thing I am concerned with right now is your health… physically and mentally. We'll deal with the finer details later, understand… I think we've said enough for now, rest up for a while. I don't want to overwhelm you."

"But, I still don't know anything…" She turned and rested her head on his chest.

He turned slightly before sliding down the bed, so that they were both lying on their sides, her head in the crook of his arm, nose against his chest while he held her tightly.

"The safest place in the Universe…" she mumbled.

He smiled sadly… Would you still say that if you knew the truth?

###

Trunks watched Pan as she looked around the market in awe. It had been two weeks since she left the hospital, and it was her first time- in this new state of hers- seeing an alien market. She held onto his hand tightly, not wanting to part from him. A wanderer she was, drifting from booth to booth, dragging him along behind her.

Trunks didn't mind, he would let her look all she wanted. In a way, it was like she was getting to live out her childhood that she had lost. In her mind, she was still nine... It left Trunks in a state of confusion most of the time. She wasn't used to her mature body, so little things she did or wore for that matter, was making it hard on him. At least she hadn't grabbed her breasts again... At least around him she hadn't.

Her mind was so innocent again, and he was her world. He loved and hated it. He didn't deserve to be seen so high in her eyes, not after the way he treated her for all those months. But, this situation they were in was either the Kai's way of giving him a second chance, or punishing him.

"Hey Trunks-Kun," Pan called, bringing him back to her.

"Yes, Angel?"

"You were zoning out," she giggled.

"Sorry," he apologized, smiling softly.

"What were you thinking about?" She tilted her head to the side.

"This planet," he lied softly. He hated lying to her, but if he admitted that he had been thinking about her, she would have asked why and so forth...

She had probably asked a million questions since she woke up. They were one after another, too. They built up on each other- just like a child's would.

As far as she knew, the humans had heard rumors that they had been staying under an island, so they started drilling, and that's why they were in space so soon. She still had questions, but they were much simpler.

"I like the sky," Pan looked up and he followed her gaze. This planet had a light purple sky, and one of their moons was constantly in the sky. "Reminds me of your hair," she grinned, tucking a piece of her long, dark hair behind her ear.

Trunks caught a glimpse of the old silver earring in her ear. "Come on," he turned around, leading her back to a booth they had passed earlier.

"Where are you we going?" She asked curiously.

"Here," he stopped at the jewelry booth. He looked at the earrings, and she followed his gaze. "Pick a pair, and I'll buy them for you."

"Really…?" She looked at him with wide eyes.

"Yeah," he smiled. "I promised I would buy you a new pair, didn't I?"

"Oh yeah..." She tucked her hair behind her ear again. "In the Hyperbolic Time Chamber..." Trunks nodded and smiled gently, "it's me and you vs. the world, remember that?"

"Yeah..." He whispered. How could he have been so stupid these past months? Honestly, he let the world turn him against her... She deserved so much more. "And, it still is," he squeezed her hand gently.

She looked back at the earrings, "they're all so pretty... Which one do you like?"

"No matter which one you get, it will look beautiful on you."

She blushed, a small smile on her face. After thinking about it for a few minutes, she chose a small diamond pair. She replaced them with her old ones, and showed Trunks with a smile. "Like them?" She asked.

"Beautiful," he smiled, taking her hand again. "Would you like some more clothes?" He motioned to a few racks.

"But, I already have so many..." She frowned slightly, looking at all the clothes before her. Her closest in the ship was crammed full, she didn't think she could fit anymore clothes in there if she tried. "How about we get you something!" She smiled.

"Huh?" He said, surprised.

"We can get you a new shirt!" She touched a black shirt before letting out a surprised gasp, snatching her hand back like the fabric had burned her.

"Angel?" Trunks asked worriedly, grabbing her hand.

Pan looked up at him, her dark eyes wide and confused. "You... You let me dress up as a boy to get parts for the ship..."

Trunks' eyes widened in shock. She remembered that... How much was she remembering? His stomach twisted in knots, what if she started remembering everything.

"I... Still didn't have any breasts yet, and you didn't want me to at first, but you soon gave in..." Her eyes were distant, memories flashing through her mind. She gasped, touching her hair, "you cut it..."

Trunks nodded slowly, "I had to... In order to make you look more like a boy. Angel…" he said softly. "How old are you?"

She blinked at him, thinking. "I'm fourteen..." She whispered.

###

Pan gasped, waking up from her dream- covered in sweat. She sat up in her bed, her dark hair clinging to her forehead and neck. The worst dreams she ever had was about the Androids, or the day the ladies who meant the world to her died, but this nightmare was completely different.

It was Trunks, yet it wasn't him. His eyes were so cold, and his voice just as icy. It made her shiver just thinking about it! From what she could gather in the dream, she had made him mad for some reason... What could she have done?

She bent her knees, shaking her head softly. It was just a dream... A very bad dream... Her eyes widened, what if it wasn't a dream at all?! What if it was memories of something that she couldn't remember yet...? Her mental age was only fourteen, technically she was eighteen. What if she had done something so terrible it made Trunks treat her like trash?

Pan threw off her covers and climbed off her bed, carefully. She sneaked down the lit hallway until she reached Trunks' room. Glancing inside she saw him... He was snoring softly as he laid on his back, an arm thrown over his eyes to block out the hall light. His sheets were wrapped around his legs, leaving his torso bare as it moved with his soft breathing.

Pan's heart thumped in her chest... She was developing feelings for him that she had never felt before, and the way her body was reacting… She figured she hadn't out grown the feelings, but they were still there. She knew the way she used to look, a girl who could easily pass for a guy would never get Trunks to notice her, but now she looked completely different. She had grown into her body, curves and all... Had Trunks even noticed at all?

She shut off the hall light, blinking her eyes a few times to adjust to the darkness. Quietly, she walked over towards him, stepping over a few piles of dirty clothes.

"Trunks-Kun," she whispered, shaking his shoulder.

"Five more minutes..." he mumbled groggily.

"Trunks!" She said urgently.

"Huh?!" His eyes popped open and he glanced around the dark room. "Angel?" He asked, blinking his eyes several times to get used to the dark. "What's wrong?" His calm voice betrayed him as he noticed she was in nothing but a large shirt.

"Can I sleep with you?" She asked softly. "I had a bad dream about the Androids..."

Trunks looked at her for a few seconds, his conscience was having a battle with itself. Part of him screamed no, that it was a bad idea to let her in his bed. His other half, scolded himself for even thinking so perversely. She may be an adult, but she had the mind of a fourteen year old. He wouldn't do anything to make her uncomfortable, he already knew that.

"Come on," he finally said, waving her towards him.

She smiled, crawling over him and sliding under the covers beside him. Trunks closed his eyes, trying to drift off to sleep again.

"Trunks-Kun, if I ever did something really bad, would you still love me?" She asked softly.

He jumped slightly, surprised by such a serious question. He looked at her wide eyes that looked so scared... Did she suspect that she did something?

"Of course," he said seriously. "I'll always love you, Angel," he stroked her hair out of her eyes.

She smiled softly, "I love you, too, Trunks-Kun..."

He smiled, satisfied with himself. But, there was still the fear of what Pan would do or say when she remembered everything. He didn't even know how to begin to think about that...

Soft giggling brought him back to the present, and he saw Pan covering her mouth. Well, he was at a loss...

"What's so funny?" He raised an eyebrow.

"I was just thinking," she said softly. "The first time I was getting supplies by myself. I had to think of an excuse as to why I was there when the clerk asked if he could help me... I told him you were my dad, it was so weird to think of you like that!"

Trunks chuckled. "Why…? Because you see me more as an older brother?"

"No," so blunt...

He looked down at her in surprise.

"You've always just been Trunks..." She whispered. "That's why you're so special, because you've always been mine..."

He was slightly shocked. She had never viewed him as a brother...? Then, was it a bit extreme to try to make her into his little sister? If fate had ever been kind enough to give him an actual little sister, he doubted she would have acted like Pan. In fact, if his counterpart was lucky enough to have one, he'd bet anything that his little sister would just be a miniature version of their mother.

Pan was Pan... Ever since he found her when she was a child, he had a soft spot for her. He had promised Gohan that he'd protect her, and it was almost like she understood him the way no one else did. They were alone together in this world... The last of a once dominant race.

"Trunks-Kun," Pan whispered, wrapping her arms around him suddenly, and holding him tightly.

"Angel?" He asked, wrapping his arms around her carefully; she was shaking.

She heaved a dry sob, and pressed her hands flat against his back. "Please Trunks… please stay mine... Don't leave me..." She cried.

"Oh Angel..." He whispered, stroking her hair gently.

"Please," she begged. "Don't leave me..."

He ran a hand through his hair, his breathing slightly shaky. "I promise..."
