Hey guys remember me?
Okay this is what happened... I started this story last summer but then things got really busy and I honestly had zero time to write so then I sort of lost interest. But now I really miss writing so I'm trying to get back into it again. Especially since my classes are getting a lot harder and writing really relaxes me lol.
So I had to go back and reread comments since it's been forever since I updated. I'll write another author's note about that at the end :)
I know I said this chapter would be a Kogan chapter but I lied. Kendall's actually not in this chapter at all. If there is a kogan chapter coming up it'll either be the next one or the one after that.
I don't own BTR.
So far rehearsals for the play were going really well. Logan had mainly been helping Jo with costumes. There wasn't really much he could do aside from gluing glitter and rhinestones and cutting fabrics wherever she told him to, but he was just glad he was able to help. Logan's favorite part about rehearsals was watching Dak in between helping out with all the backstage stuff. He caught on pretty quickly that for the most part, the main casts were slightly lacking in singing and acting ability. Everyone except for Dak of course, who appeared to be the only one who possessed any real talent.
Logan and Dak had been dating for two weeks before he officially asked him to be his boyfriend. It happened backstage during rehearsals before the opening night of the play. At that point everyone was busy making sure everything was ready for the big night. Logan had just put the finishing touches on one of the set boards when Dak appeared, clad fully in his regal costume attire. "How do I look?" he asked.
Logan looked him up and down and smiled. "Like a real prince." Dak grinned and sat down beside him. "So are you ready for opening night?"
"I guess so. I'm a little nervous though."
"Don't worry you're gonna be great," Logan assured him. "I mean you sound really great."
"You've been eavesdropping on me?" Dak asked, raising his eyebrows.
Logan blushed, realizing he'd been caught. "I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Everyone says you're so talented."
"Well I'm glad that you would agree," Dak said, and he put his arm around him to pull him in for a kiss that made Logan blush even more. He smiled and rested his head against Dak's chest and Dak rested his chin atop his head.
"Actually, there is sort of another reason why I've been nervous these past couple of days," Dak said.
Logan pulled out of his grasp to look at him."What's wrong?"
"Well, there's something I've been meaning to ask you." Logan blinked. "I know we've been hanging out for a while...going on dates and stuff."
"Yeah and it's been great," Logan said and he noticed Dak relax slightly.
"I really like you Logan. And I've been thinking maybe it's time we make it official."
"Make what official?"
"Us." Dak took his hand and gave it a squeeze. "I want to be with you and only you."
It took Logan a moment to realize that Dak was asking him to be his boyfriend. Logan had never been in a relationship before so he wasn't quite sure how all this was supposed to work, but before then he'd just assumed he and Dak already were boyfriends. But the idea that Dak wanted to make it official by formally asking him did make it seem more special.
Before he got the chance to say yes curly-haired Jennifer appeared in front of them. "Sorry to steal your boyfriend Logan, but Dak and I are supposed to be running lines."
"Oh okay," Logan said.
"I guess I gotta go," Dak said. He stood up and turned to Logan one last time. "Just think about what I asked you okay? You don't have to answer right now."
Logan nodded.
"So, uh we're probably gonna be here for a while. Are you gonna stay and wait so I can take you home?" Dak asked.
"No, that's okay, James said he'd give me a ride. Camille and I are supposed to hang out later."
"Okay, I'll see you tomorrow then?"
Logan nodded again. "Yeah sure."
After Dak and Jennifer disappeared Logan grabbed his backpack and headed out to the front of the school to wait for James. He'd thought about saying a quick goodbye to Jo before he left since she'd been so nice to him for the past couple of days, but she was back in the fitting area where things were always so hectic, so he figured she'd be busy.
James had stayed after in the weight room but he'd promised to meet Logan in front of the school at 5:30 p.m. so they could drive home. So while he waited, Logan began to contemplate the talk he'd just had with Dak and what he'd asked him. At first he wasn't sure what Dak had meant when he'd told him to "think about it". His initial reaction had been to say yes a hundred times, that he'd love to be Dak's boyfriend. But then the more he did think about it the more he realized that maybe it was sort of a big step to go from just dating to committing to a relationship with someone. And maybe it wouldn't be right for him to start a relationship with someone if he might possibly still be in love with someone else.
Logan glanced at the time on his cell phone; it was almost 5:45, which meant that James was late. He figured he'd be out soon so he decided to just go out to the car and wait. On his way there he spotted Lucy, who he'd assumed would be riding home with them, but then he saw she was getting into a car with someone else. Logan had yet to figure out what was going on with James and Lucy, but it was obvious something was up. He recalled how earlier that day something weird had happened. When one of his teachers had sent him to the main office to pick up some papers, he'd passed by the nurse's office on his way there and saw Lucy outside. She looked really upset and her eyes were red like she'd been crying. But when he asked her if she was okay she just smiled and told him she was fine. It had worried Logan, but before he got a chance to question her further he'd had to get back to class.
Logan wasn't sure what to make of the situation ,but judging by how secretive James was acting, he didn't think he'd be figuring it out anytime soon. After another ten minutes he finally came outside. "Sorry I'm late. I had to spend a few extra minutes on my obliques."
Logan rolled his eyes. "Yeah I'm sure."
James popped open the trunk so he could toss in his gym bag, and then he tossed Logan the keys so he could get in the car. Once Logan was inside the car he put the key in the ignition and turned it on so he could turn on the heat.
"So how was rehearsal?" James asked, climbing in beside him.
"Good...I think things are coming along really nicely," he said and James nodded absentmindedly. "So Lucy's not riding with us today?"
He shrugged. "I guess not."
"Is everything okay with you guys? I mean I saw her earlier today in the nurse's office and she looked really upset..."
James paused, staring straight ahead at the road and avoided his gaze. He sighed. "It's nothing. She's just having some family problems. Nothing for you to worry about."
"Family problems?"
"Logan..."
"Okay, I get it. I'll butt out. I was just worried is all."
"Like I said, it's nothing for you to worry about," he reiterated. "Everything's fine."
Logan nodded, though he still didn't believe him. He could tell James was lying to him, he just didn't understand why.
After they'd gotten home the doorbell rang and when Logan answered it Camille was standing on the doorstep. James had gone upstairs to get cleaned up after working out, so while he did that, Logan and Camille decided to occupy the living room. "I'm gonna get something to drink. Do you want a soda or something?" he asked his curly-haired friend, who had sprawled out on his couch.
"Or something," she said, which Logan figured meant that she was hungry.
He got up to go into the kitchen and grabbed a big bag of chips out of the pantry. When he got to the refrigerator he paused, noticing the little purple sticky note with a time and date written on it. It only took him a second to recognize that the sticky note was for him, probably left by Brooke this morning. She used to leave them for him all the time not too long ago. They were little reminders for him of his appointments with Dr. Marten, who he'd started seeing when he was eight years old. It had been a while since his last visit; his last session had been at the end of eighth grade, and after that he'd decided not to go anymore because he didn't think he needed it anymore. He remembered how he'd thought that him entering high school was supposed to be this turning point in his life and that his deciding to quit therapy meant that he was finally growing up. But as of recent he was beginning to rethink that decision.
Brooke was the one who had always been in charge of scheduling his appointments, so when Logan approached her a few days ago, slightly embarrassed to admit what he needed, she'd gotten the message pretty quickly and now she'd left the note for him on the refrigerator, letting him know that his appointment had been scheduled for next Thursday afternoon. Logan discreetly removed the sticky note and folded it up, putting it in his pocket.
He grabbed two sodas out of the refrigerator and walked back to the living room and handed Camille one.
"Thanks," she said. She sat up on the couch, popped open her can and took a sip. Logan sat down beside her and did the same. "Oh Dak texted you. He said he wants you to call him tonight."
"What?" Logan grabbed his phone and scrolled down to Dak's message. He smiled once he read it and typed back a quick reply, then he glared at Camille. "You were reading my text messages?"
Camille laughed and shrugged. "You just left it sitting there. Why'd you get all smiley all of a sudden?" she asked.
"He sort of asked me to be his boyfriend today."
"Seriously? That's great," she said. "God Logan, you're so lucky. I don't understand how you do it."
"Do what?"
"I mean it's barely half way through the school year and you've already had two boyfriends. That's two more than I've had this year."
Logan raised his eyebrows. "Technically Kendall was never my boyfriend..." he pointed out, recalling how Kendall had made that perfectly clear.
"But still you guys had a thing together and that counts for something. I can't believe you lost your virginity before I did."
Logan's eyes widened and he felt his face redden. "Do you want to say that a little louder? I don't think James heard you."
"Oops, sorry, I forgot he was here. I just..." She paused and lowered her voice. "I just don't understand how it happened. I mean you never really told me..."
Logan sighed. He wasn't really sure how he was supposed to explain this to her or what she even wanted to know. He hoped she didn't want him to explain sex to her or anything like that, but he figured she just wanted details or whatever. "We were sitting on the couch, like right where you are...and then he kissed me."
"And?" Camille sat listening to him intently. She raised her eyebrows for him to continue.
"And then we went upstairs and we did it."
"That's it?"
He shrugged. "Yeah it just sort of happened..."
"Didn't it hurt?"
"Yes, a lot. But not always. Can we talk about something else now?"
She sighed. "Ugh, fine whatever. But it's not like James can hear us anyway."
Logan had figured that, but it wasn't really so much that he didn't want James to hear as much that he just didn't want to talk about it. He'd hoped she would get the hint and not ask him about it anymore. It wasn't because he wanted to keep it as this big secret from her. It was just that it was too personal for anyone to know, even if that someone was his best friend.
"So did you ever find out what was bothering him?" she asked.
"James? No but something weird happened earlier. I saw Lucy in the nurse's office and she was crying. And when I asked James about it he got all weird and tense."
"Lucy was crying?" Logan nodded. "And James has been acting weird and tense for the past few days?" He nodded again. Try weeks, he thought. "Well, maybe they're breaking up."
"I don't think so. James really, really likes her. And anyway, if that was it I'm sure he would have just told me."
"Well, it's either that or Lucy's pregnant."
Logan paused. "What? That's ridiculous. Why would you even think that?"
"If I was pregnant and still in high school I would probably cry too. And that would explain why James is being all secretive..."
"But it could be anything other than that. James isn't stupid enough to get someone pregnant."
"Well if you want to know so bad then let's go investigate." She sat up and nodded towards the stairs.
"You mean like go snooping in his room?"
"Don't think of it as snooping..." she said, standing up off the couch and heading upstairs.
"Wait," Logan followed after her. "If it's not snooping then what exactly would you call it?" he whispered, even though it was unlikely that James would even hear them since he was in the shower.
Camille crept slowly up the stairs, pausing once they got to the bathroom to make sure James was still busy. "Think of it as...a way to cure our boredom. Plus I've always wondered what the inside of a hot guy's bedroom was like."
"You're so weird," Logan said.
She shrugged and opened James' bedroom door. The inside of his room wasn't exactly intriguing in Logan's opinion. It was the same hockey posters and sports trophies, the same pile of laundry that never seemed to disappear, the giant poster of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, and the old picture of him and Logan when they were younger that sat unframed on his night stand since forever. Camille seemed even less intrigued.
"Do you see anything out of the ordinary?" she asked.
"Nope," he said, though he wasn't even sure what they were looking for. "Hey maybe we can try going through his phone?"
"Ha ha ha. I'm trying to help you remember?"
"Well it doesn't look like we're gonna find anything. It's probably none of my business anyway-" He paused, noticing a small velvet box sitting on James' dresser.
"Hey what's that?" Camille asked.
"I don't know." He picked it up and opened it. Inside there was what appeared to be a diamond ring. But the diamond was shaped oddly.
"He bought a ring?"
Logan snapped the box shut. "We don't know who it's for. He could have bought it for my step mom."
"Or he could have bought it for Lucy because she's pregnant. Maybe he asked her to marry him and she turned him down and that's why they've been fighting."
Logan didn't want to admit it but everything Camille was saying was starting to sound plausible. But still he wasn't sure he was ready to believe his brother had gotten himself into that kind of trouble without any real proof. "I hate to say it, but I'm starting to think you could be right."
"I told you..." she started, but trailed off. Suddenly Camille's eyes widened and her mouth practically dropped to the floor.
"What?" Logan turned around when he heard someone clear his throat behind him. James was standing there in a towel with wet hair.
"What are you doing in my room?" the older boy asked.
"Uh..."Logan responded with quick thinking, "We were borrowing your computer?"
"Logan, you have your own computer."
"I couldn't get the internet to connect," Logan lied. He tightened his grip on the velvet box.
"Well do you mind giving me some privacy?" he said, gesturing towards his half-nakedness.
"Yeah, sorry," he said. Logan waited until James wasn't looking, and he quickly slipped the ring back on his dresser. Then he grabbed Camille, who appeared to still be stuck frozen in place, and dragged her out of the room.
Once they got downstairs Logan saw that Camille was blushing. "I can't believe that just happened...Maybe I should hang out here more often."
"You already do," Logan said, rolling his eyes. "Can you drool over my stepbrother later? This is serious."
Camille giggled. "Sorry...Well, Logan there's nothing you can do until he tells you the truth. Why don't you just ask him who the ring is for?"
"Because every time I try to ask him anything he gets mad. We probably shouldn't have even done this. If he doesn't want me to know he doesn't want me to know."
Logan had always thought that since James and him were so close that meant they wouldn't keep secrets from each other. But he was beginning to realize that wasn't so true. And anyway James wasn't the only one who was keeping secrets. Logan had been keeping a secret of his own for a while now, so he supposed he couldn't even be mad at him for it.
Later after Camille had gone home Logan sat up alone in his room. He remembered he was supposed to call Dak but for some reason he kept putting it off. His phone had sat on his nightstand untouched for almost an hour now. When he finally got the nerve to just pick up his phone and tell Dak that yes, he wanted to be his boyfriend, right before he could James knocked on his door.
"Come in," he said.
"So your friend left already?" James asked, and Logan nodded. He looked down at his phone one last time before setting it back down on his nightstand.
"Listen, I just wanted to apologize," James said.
"For what?"
"For acting like such a jerk and snapping at you so much. I've just been really stressed out lately with school and hockey..."
"And Lucy?"
He sighed. "Yeah her too."
"James, whatever is going on with you, you can tell me." Logan sat up on the bed and frowned. "I mean, don't you trust me?"
James sat down on the bed beside him. "It's not that I don't trust you...I just can't tell you."
"Why not?"
"Because I can't. You're too yo-" he started to say, but then stopped himself, knowing he was about to offend Logan. But judging by the look on Logan's face it was too late and he already knew what he was gonna say, so he figured he might as well just say it anyway. "You're too young to deal with something like this okay?"
"How is that fair at all? I always come to you for help and let you fix my problems. But the second you need help with something you won't even tell me what's going on."
"Because you can't help me with this. I don't even know how I'm gonna help myself!"
"What is Lucy sick or something?"
"Yes, okay, she's been sick. Every morning for the past few weeks," he blurted.
Logan looked at his brother wide-eyed, and the older boy averted his gaze. If he was understanding this correctly, that meant that Camille was right and James had gotten himself into that kind of trouble. Judging by the look on his face that was exactly what he was telling him.
Logan had meant to say something encouraging, to try to help him like he'd been so determined to do before, but all he could think to say was "Oh," and shut his mouth.
James snorted. "Yeah. That's about the response I was expecting."
"What are you gonna do?"
"We haven't really decided yet...but she's been talking about getting rid of it. It's still early so if we were gonna do that now would be the time I guess."
"Is that what you want?"
"I don't know...I thought I did. And I think that's what she thinks I want. When I first found out I sort of panicked, and I've kinda been freezing her out lately," he admitted, guiltily. "But I was just scared. Now I've had some time to think about it and I'm starting to think that maybe we could keep it. We could do it together."
Logan raised his eyebrows. "You mean raise a baby together? On your own?"
"Well yeah. I could get a job and go to school part time. And I would help out, with the baby and stuff. I know it sounds crazy, but I'd do it for her. I would do anything for her."
Logan smiled small at his so obviously still smitten brother. "So were you planning on proposing to her or something?"
"What? God no. We're not ready to get married."
"But I saw the ring on your dresser."
"That's not an engagement ring. It's more like an apology ring...or a promise ring. I bought it to show her how sorry I am for being a jerk, and that I'm serious about doing this if she's willing to give me a second chance."
"Oh."
"Yeah it's not even a real diamond, it's a crystal. I got it because she likes things that are weird and different or whatever."
"Well I'm sure she'll like it then," Logan said. That explained why it was so oddly shaped and didn't exactly look like an engagement ring. "And whatever happens, whatever you decide to do I know you'll do the right thing. You always do."
James smiled. "Thanks. I guess it does kinda feel good to finally talk to someone about this."
"You really haven't told anyone?"
"Nope, not even Kendall. Not that he'd be much help anyway."
Suddenly Logan thought of the one person who was going to be the least happy when they found out the news. "James how are you gonna tell your mom? She's literally going to kill you."
James winced. "Uh yeah, I was kinda hoping to get things squared away with Lucy first, and then worry about that later. As a matter of fact, right now I'd kinda rather think about anything other that." Logan could see why James was afraid. He was even afraid of how his step mom was gonna react and he wasn't even the one who was in trouble.
"So what's up with you then? What's going on in your life?" James said, changing the subject.
"Nothing really."
"How are things with Dak?"
"Good..."
"Are you excited for next week?"
"Of course." Logan knew James was talking about the fact that his dad was coming home next week. Logan had only been looking forward to it ever since Brooke told them both the news.
"Logan, have you given any thought to when your dad gets here, maybe telling him what you told me not too long ago?"
Logan paused, looked down at his lap and shrugged when he realized what James was referring to. "I don't know. I guess I've thought about it..."
"Look, I'm not trying to push you or anything. I know you have to do this on your own. But it might be a good idea to tell him while he's here and you have the chance, since we never know when he's gonna leave again. Especially now if you're dating someone and it's starting to get serious."
"Who said things were getting serious?"
"I said if they are. I mean your dad might like to know."
Logan rolled his eyes. "Fine. I'll tell my dad I'm gay as soon as you tell your mom you got a girl pregnant. Deal?"
James stood up from the bed, sensing he was on the losing end of this argument. "Touche...but seriously, just think about it okay? You were worried when you told me right? And I didn't react badly when you told me did I? He won't either."
Logan nodded. But it was different for him telling James things and telling his dad things. It always had been. Even though he wanted to tell his dad, he knew his dad had this view of him in his head as the same kid he was when he left, and that telling him meant that that would change. The thought of that just scared him. But he would just have to wait and see if he'd be able to gain the courage to tell him because in a few days he'd be home and then everything would be different.
.
.
So regarding comments...I'm glad so many people like Dak in this story because I really like him too. I think Dak would be better for Logan than Kendall would but in a weird way I think Logan could be good for Kendall, if that makes sense.
Anyway, I will try to update again soon, at least by next weekend. Also, I have another story I'm thinking of posting that I started forever ago... It's kind of different from anything I've ever written and doesn't really have a plot but I might just post it anyway just to see what yall think.
