Ah, boys, never change. Again, Haru's 'condition' is referenced from my 30 Day Challenge fic's chapter 19. Which... should be all you need to know, really. Eheh.
Chapter 19- Of Commitment and Symbols
Rin had had a plan the day before for revealing the rings to Makoto. A sappy, overindulgent, cheesy plan. The problem was that the intense round of lovemaking last night and Haruka's subsequent need to be carefully handled put a damper on the redhead's plans. The plan transformed from an elaborate day in the city to a stay-at-home day. Haru reclined on his two drowsy lovers as they watched the most mind-numbingly adorable romantic movies Rin had been able to scrounge up. The black-haired boy was fine provided he didn't move too much, preferring to simply relax into a boneless lump in his boyfriends' arms, Akiha vibrating with purrs in his lap.
The teenager knew he'd fallen asleep at some point because the next time he awoke Rin was missing. Haru jerked upright, staring at the space Rin was supposed to occupy, as a hand carded through his hair.
"Haru? What is it?" Makoto asked sleepily.
"Where did Rin go..?" He asked as he reached for the empty spot.
"Store," Makoto replied. "Needed stuff for dinner. Haru-chan, I don't wanna get up yet..."
With a content sigh Haruka snuggled into the brunette. "Me neither."
The younger of the pair maneuvered their bodies under the kotatsu and Haru turned to nestle up against his boyfriend's chest.
An unhappy mew came from the brunette's other side and Akiha clambered over Makoto's hip only to drop into the gap between their stomachs. A rumble of a laugh echoed from the taller boy and Haru felt a smile quirking his lips.
"I love you."
A hand squeezed the black-haired teen's hip. "And I love you."
"I love you both." Makoto chuckled.
Haru blinked once he realized the hand on his hip wasn't Makoto's (the brunette had wrapped his arms around his lover's waist), struggled against his tired feeling, and tilted his head to see Rin smiling down at them.
"Rin..." Haru mumbled.
"Don't," the redhead whispered, rubbing circles on the drowsy boy's hip. "Don't worry about it. I'm cooking now anyway, there's no need to get up. And you need to rest. Sleep a while, babe."
Haru smiled up at Rin. The redhead's soft and soothing tone did exactly what Rin had wanted it to; the oldest member of the threesome dug his head back under Makoto's chin and sighed happily.
Rin took his time with the different dishes he cooked; Haru's mackerel was perfectly seared, Makoto's green curry was seasoned just right, his own kimchi and the steak he'd splurged on cooked to his highest standards.
He even got Akiha her own special can of high-grade cat food.
Rin was determined that tonight would be a night the three of them would remember all their lives.
Someone's thumbs dug into the space between his shoulders and he groaned softly.
"You're taking this way too seriously," Haruka said. "Calm down."
"It's important to me." Rin replied, brow furrowing as he tried to concentrate on the food and not his lover's hands.
"It's important to all of us," Haru rebuffed as he pressed his thumbs into a sensitive spot at the back of the redhead's neck. "The more you stress the more likely you are to mess up. Calm down, Rinrin."
Rin sighed. "Okay, okay. How's Mako?"
"Still out cold." And that was breath stirring his ponytail, not wandering fingers.
"No sex." Rin snapped in warning.
"No," Haru agreed, pulling the redhead flush to his body anyway, wrapping his arms around the slightly bulkier body. "Just want to be close to you."
"I'm not the only one taking being romantic seriously, huh?" Rin teased.
"I love you," Haru said firmly, nosing the ponytail out of the way of his ability to nip at the nape of Rin's neck.
"You already said that."
"I don't mind saying it a lot. I like that I can. I like that I-"
"Don't," the redhead interrupted. "Save it for later, Haru. Makoto needs to hear it too."
A consenting hum was his reply but the black-haired boy didn't release him and Rin was happy he stayed.
"Where're the rings?" Haru murmured after a quiet minute of basking in each other's company.
"Third cupboard, bottom, behind a couple of pans."
"Mmmkay," Haru sighed sluggishly.
"If you're tired go back to Mako."
"No, I'm fine. Just happy. Also moving doesn't sound like a good idea right now."
Rin chuckled. "Want help back to the table then?"
"...can you?"
Rin aided the older boy in returning to the kotatsu and Makoto's waiting arms with a knowing grin.
"You two are so cute."
The brunette offered him a drowsy half-smile as Haru burrowed back under the warm table and whined for Makoto to hold him. The pair went back to cuddling and Rin chuckled as he left.
"You know I'm going to have to move the kotatsu soon, right?"
He didn't, in the end, if only because the already unusually chilly day became downright nippy by dusk.
Makoto and Haruka had managed to struggle at least upright though Haru was blinking slowly and Makoto kept yawning hugely.
The brunette woke up sharply when he realized exactly how much food was being set on the table.
"Rin," he said warmly. "You made all of this for today?"
"It's our anniversary, of course I had to go all out!" The redhead growled. "What kind of boyfriend would I be..? Honestly..." Rin grumbled as he headed back into the kitchen.
"He's blushing," Haru remarked with a smirk. "Happy but embarrassed."
"Sounds like our Rinrin!" Makoto agreed with a chuckle.
They spent the dinner leisurely. Quiet talk spanned the whole meal and they amusedly fed each other pieces of their respective dinners. Haru said his own quiet thanks for his meal, stating he couldn't have made it better himself, which evoked a playful snarl from the redhead. Makoto sung his lover's praises and blushed upon the mention of his own cooking.
"I wanted to make something," the brunette sighed. "But we all know how that would've worked out..."
"With another kitchen fire?" Rin asked with a soft laugh.
"Like the one at your parents' house that I took the blame for?"
"Haruuuuu!" Makoto whined. "You're never going to let me forget that, are you?"
A devious smirk flashed over the oldest's lips.
"Anyway," Rin burst in before Makoto could look any more hurt. "When are you starting this job of yours, Mako? You said you actually got word you were hired, right?"
Green eyes widened as Makoto took a bite of his curry. His lovers watched him patiently until he cleared his mouth and spoke up with "I did! Mikoshiba-kun was nice enough to recommend me, so we work together now. I have the shift right after his."
"The Captain did?" Rin yelped. "I didn't know you were working with him!"
"Mikoshiba-kun went out of his way for me once he heard I was looking for part time work, I'm very grateful for his effort!"
"How did he..?" Rin pondered it aloud for a spare second.
Haru butted in. "Kou-chan."
"Ahh, yeah, I guess she told him while she was home sick."
"Nice of her," Rin muttered as he eyed Haru's pout.
They still weren't happy with the idea of Makoto getting a job but they were being as kind as possible about the separation.
"Haru," Rin said to change the subject. "Why don't you grab dessert?"
Haru jumped, broken out of his unhappy thoughts, and nodded.
"Eh? Dessert? Rin, did you make something while we were gone yesterday? You didn't have to-"
Carmine eyes held the verdant stare. "Not me. Haru made it before he left for your date yesterday."
The brunette whirled to look after their boyfriend. "Eh?! Y-you did? Really?"
The black-haired boy carefully set the small chocolate cake on the kotatsu and folded his legs to sit with a fond smile.
"It's our anniversary. Of course I had to do something."
"O-oh... And I didn't do anything, did I? How awful..."
Rin cuffed their boyfriend upside the head. "You're here. That's all we care about in the end. This is our anniversary; if you weren't here this would be meaningless. You brought us together. Really, Mako. If we're going to compare accomplishments in our relationship you still own the most important."
Wide green eyes switched back and forth between warm red and content blue.
"You two-"
Haru shoved a plated slice of cake at the brunette. "No crying."
"Save it for later," Rin added with a secretive smile.
Makoto seemed to find that suspicious but with a pointed look from Haru at the confection uneaten before the fidgeting brunette, he quickly lost himself in chocolate cake, as his lovers had expected.
Bowls and plates were set on the floor and dutifully but gleefully cleaned by a tiny raspy kitten tongue while Akiha's owners watched with amusement. Once the kitten proclaimed herself done- crawling into Haru's lap and settling into cleaning herself- Rin got up to put away the plates and Haru watched him with expectant eyes.
"Gifts?"
"Gifts," the redhead called back.
Makoto whimpered, looking even more upset- he hadn't gotten gifts either! How horrible a boyfriend was he?- but Haru leaned across the low table to kiss the frown away.
"It's all right," the black-haired teen reassured as he glanced up to the youngest.
Haru smiled before he could stop himself at the sight of the rectangular box Rin held reverently in both hands.
"Close your eyes." The redhead whispered. "And keep them closed."
Makoto sighed good-naturedly but did as he was told while Rin resumed his seat. Haru peeked at the redhead but Rin was a little more tolerant of the black-haired boy since, well, it was Haru's design and he knew about the rings. Still, with a pleased smile, the oldest closed his eyes too.
Rin checked the boxes- ruby and emerald, Haru's; sapphire and emerald, his; ruby and sapphire, Makoto's- and closed each carefully so they wouldn't snap shut. Then he slid the correct boxes across the table to the correct lovers.
"Okay." He said in a wavering voice. "Open."
Makoto started to laugh and ask the redhead what the big deal was when he laid eyes on the seemingly innocuous box.
"What is..?" Makoto's voice caught. He looked between his lovers with wide eyes and they smiled back at him. "When did you..?"
"Set the orders after we took the twins out shopping."
"Th-that was weeks ago! Is this because of what they said about marriage?"
"We love you. We love each other. There's nothing wrong with bearing a physical symbol of our feelings, is there? It signifies a promise to each other."
Green eyes widened. "H-Haru..."
"You haven't even seen it yet, idiot!" Rin said fondly.
"I designed them after Rin said something." The black-haired teen commented with a hint of pride.
With a tremor in his hands Makoto picked up the felt box and opened it. Haru and Rin took their own rings and slid them on the ring finger of their left hands. Rin grinned at the simple band and the words that meant everything to him, the gems flanking those three words symbolizing the two men he loved. He twisted the ring once on its digit and clenched his hand to feel out the new addition.
Haru stared at the metal adorning his finger and felt something unequivocally right settle in his chest.
Makoto hadn't put his on, still staring at the words on the inside and outside, eyes filling with tears and lip quivering.
"You know if..." The brunette's voice was hoarse as he withheld his sobs. "If I didn't already have you two I'd say this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."
His lovers grinned at him and both reached out. Rin grasped his wrist and Haru rubbed his shoulder and Makoto laughed at their touch before he dissolved into weeping.
"I really can't- I really can't tell you how much I love you but..! But this is... This is the perfect way to say it! I really... really love you both so m-much..!"
Rin rubbed his thumb over tan skin with a chuckle. "Then put it on."
"I want to see how we look when we match," Haru agreed in a hushed voice.
Still shaking the brunette slipped the ring on his finger and hiccuped when it met the final joint. Rin's left hand curled over his, gold band glinting in the light, and Haru brought his to complete. All Makoto could really see was a watery blur of gold-green-red-blue but his heart felt close to bursting. He shielded his eyes with his free hand and gave himself entirely over to his happy tears.
His lovers moved and nuzzled into his sides as Akiha hopped across the table to mewl at the crying brunette. As one, Rin and Haruka reached out for the tiny furry body and picked her up to deposit her in Makoto's lap.
Akiha's purring blended seamlessly in with Makoto's hitching breath, Rin's warm chuckles, and Haru's soft murmurs of adoration.
And for a stark moment Makoto realized he'd never been happier.
A couple of notes concerning the next chapter; it takes place approximately a week PAST the NEXT sidefic update (Which amusingly is also a week past this one. NOT the SeiGou chapter, by the way), so make sure you're keeping track of that too. Basically this chapter - next sidefic chapter - next chapter of this fic. Understood?
The next chapter will be a HARD T-RATING. There's some mention of sex. I can't get rid of it without making that section completely illegible so be warned, it's in there. It's not descriptive enough to be rated M, so it isn't. I mean the worst mentions are like five words really related to sex. Okay? Okay. (I'm pretty sure most of you wandered in from the 30-Day so you're WELL USED TO TEH SMUT but I wanted to warn y'all just in case.
