Epilogue
Emily's POV
She took the stairs two at a time, keeping her eyes decidedly on her feet. If she saw anything that reminded her of him... a flash of blue, a low voice, a tan truck... she was going to give into the tears that had been threatening to overwhelm her since she heard the news. The world saw her as quiet and timid, but that wasn't true at all. She wasn't afraid of much, but living in a world without Toby Cavanaugh terrified her.
She pulled open the door and was immediately greeted by Hanna's tear stained face. "Thank God you're here," she whispered. When Hanna whispered it held power, it prominently displayed the devastation of the situation.
Caleb was sitting on the couch looking as lost as she had ever seen him, and it made sense. Toby was his best friend. Was. It felt so wrong talking about Toby in the past sense. He hadn't had Caleb's sarcastic sense of humor or Hanna's larger than life personality. He hadn't taken the world by storm, but his quiet presence had had an incredible impact on each and every one of their lives.
And now she just felt alone.
If she was feeling this upset she could only imagine how Spencer was feeling. "Where's Spencer?" She asked Hanna, wiping away the stray tears on her cheeks.
"I'm worried about her," Hanna muttered. "She's curled up in their bed just staring at the wall. I tried to get her to eat, but-"
She just nodded. Spencer and Toby had shared the truest kind of love she had ever seen, and she felt like a better person just for having been a small part of their story. To lose that had to be the worst kind of blow, and she was honestly afraid that it was something that Spencer would never recover from. "I'm going to go try and talk to her," she said softly.
"Wait," Caleb looked up for the first time. "Em, are you okay?"
She just shook her head. Toby was one of the best friends that she had ever had, the had been friends for practically their entire life. But she wouldn't allow her to focus on it right now. She wouldn't let herself feel her own pain, because Spencer needed her right now. Spencer had been there for her through everything... she had been there to help her study through all of her high school and college classes, she was there when she came out of the closet, and she was there when her heart was broken for the first time. She refused to think about the fact that Toby was there for her too. She would be there for Spencer now.
But even more than that, she had to get the letters. She had to get the recordings, because there was literally no way in the world that she wouldn't fulfill her last promise to Toby. "Spencer?" She whispered as she slid through the door. She approached the bedside in the same manner that she would approach a skittish dog. She didn't want to scare her.
She crouched down next to her and brushed her curls out of her face, the sight of her best friend nearly breaking her heart. The tears flowed freely down her face, her eyes were wide open and so full of pain, and a blue piece of cloth was clutched in her trembling fingers. Upon closer inspection she realized that it was one of Toby's shirts. "Spencer," she breathed, putting a hand on her hands.
Spencer let out a whimper and cringed away from her. She wanted to help her, but she knew that she couldn't. She had the distinct impression that the only person that could help her was Toby. And that wasn't possible. She had seem Toby bring Spencer back from the edge of despair so many times, but who was going to do it now? Who was going to bring her back when she needed him the most? Would it even be possible?
What would Toby do? How would he comfort her right now? She just leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Spencer's forehead. "I know it hurts, Spencer. I know that, but you have to keep pushing forward. You have to hold on, because that's what he would want you to do. You know that he would."
She paused, slipping her hand between the mattress and the box spring, wrapping her fingers around the bag carrying Toby's letters. "Spencer, can you just let me know you're alright? Do you need me to get you anything?"
"Just leave me alone." Spencer's voice was nearly inaudible. "Please just leave me alone."
"I can't do that, Spencer," Emily murmured, tucking the letters into her waist band.
"Please," she sobbed, wrenching her body away from her. "Just go. I can't-" she whimpered. "I can't do this w-without him. I can't- I just- I want Toby. I just want to lay here until I can be with him again."
"Spencer-"
"Just go!"
Spencer's sobbing shout literally ripped her heart out, but she nodded. She wouldn't really leave, but she'd leave Spencer to her grief. "We're all here for you, Spencer. We're all here, and we'll be here for you, okay? We'll get through this together."
She pulled herself to her feet and walked out the door, sliding herself to the ground. She rested her head on her knees and pulled out the letters. The first had her name on it, and it caused her tattered heart to clench in pain again. She traced the pen strokes and carefully ripped the letter open, wanting to preserve the whole of it. The tears that she had so carefully held at bay were freely flowing down her face now. If she was reacting like this how would Spencer react? But God, she had to believe that Toby knew what she needed.
A soft sob ripped its way through her throat as she read the words that Toby had chosen for her.
Em,
God, Em how can I ever thank you for doing this for me? You were the first friend that I ever had. You were the first person that decided I was worth something, and I'm never going to forget that. You were one of the best friends that I ever had.
I know that you don't understand this. I know that you're uncertain whether this will help Spencer, but the fact that you trust me means everything in the world. Because I know that it will. I know that this is what Spencer needs. She'll be okay, Em, but she's going to need your help. Help her, please. Make sure that she's okay, that she eats. Make sure she takes care of herself until she cares enough to she cares enough to do it for herself.
The first letter... give it to her on our anniversary. The rest of them have circumstances on the front. Give them to her when you think she needs them. I trust you.
You too, Em. Take care of yourself. Now and forever remember how much you're worth. Remember your value. Never forget that, and never let anyone make you feel badly about yourself, because you're one of the best people that I know.
I love you Em. Thank you.
Toby
She squeezed her eyes shut and clenched the paper to her chest. She would do this. She would do this for him, for Spencer. She would do it, and she would be forever grateful that Toby entrusted this task to her. She would never forget that he chose her for this final part of their story.
