Chapter 6: School on a Wednesday

Ally woke up to the bitter sound of her alarm buzzing. She groaned to herself at the thought of leaving her bed, but still rolled out of her covers anyway and grabbed the clothes she laid out the night before. She went to the hallway bathroom (the only one in their small home), and got ready for another day.

She washed her face, brushed her teeth, combed her hair and changed her clothes. She decided to wear her black leggings, her oversized maroon sweater and her black beanie on her head. As she tip-toed past her father's room, not wanting to wake him, she headed down the stairs and into the kitchen. She filled a glass with orange juice and drank it as she looked out the window at the weeds eating at what was left of the once beautiful garden. Although she would rather stand in the kitchen for another hour or two thinking about how things used to be, Ally shook herself back to reality and forced herself to grab her backpack, slip on her ankle boots and head out the door.

On a good day it would take her 15 minutes to walk to the store.

She reaches the mall in 20 minutes, and uses her key to unlock the store. Once inside she starts to set things up, take inventory and make sure the place is ready for people. She hums quietly to herself as she pushes the broom around, trying to image things being different. She looked up at the clock hanging on the wall and saw it was close to 7:00 now. The mall wouldn't open for an hour and her dad would have to be here by 8:15 if she has any chance to make it to school on time. Knowing him he would get here at 8:25 so Ally would have to rush without the chance to say a word.

"But hey," Ally said quietly to herself. "That's how he wants it." Ally put the broom back into its place before pulling out her journal from her backpack and scribbling into it:

What do I have to do to make you want me?

Ally leaned forward on the counter, trying to take a breath rather than explode. She looked up at the clock again, now it was 7:03. She grumbled as she thought she would be used to this by now. She sighed again as she picked herself up and made her way to set up displays.

. . .

As Ally pushed through the doors of the school she could already feel the hurtful, judging eyes of every classmate burning into her. She pushed herself though, knowing it didn't matter. She made her way to her locker and traded her things. She thought back to her dad arriving at 8:18 to take over the store and when she tried to remind him she would not be working this evening because of her obligations at school, he acted like she was already gone.

He pushes me away like I am a pain . . . a problem . . . a piece of gum stuck to the bottom of his shoe that he would scrap off if he just had a chance.

Ally felt her composure fall a little as she wondered how long she had til class. She looked up and saw Austin at his locker. She smiled weakly, thankful for her friend, but resisted the urge to go and talk to him since there was so many people around. The way they treat her, the way they stare and judge, the way the talk and laugh and . . . and . . . Ally shook herself promising that she would not force Austin to go through that. Ally quickly closed her locker and headed to her class, unable to stand another moment being burned by their gaze.

. . .

Austin looked over at the sound of a closing locker, only to see Ally walking away. He sighed to himself, wishing he could convince Ally that he didn't care what people thought. He grabbed his text book and headed to his first class. He looked around at the divide in the students, "popular" with "popular" and "loser" with "loser". Austin found it annoying how divided everyone was. Austin walked to his class, at every turn there were people divided. Austin was still haunted by Ally's poem. He could almost see things the way she did. She could how separated everyone was, the judgment in student's eyes, however, from what Austin could see Ally was the only one truly alone.

. . .

Ally watched as all the other students went to lunch. Ally rarely went to have lunch with everyone else. She refused to let any of them get to her. Ally snuck into an empty classroom and sat with her journal. She ate her small simple lunch, a pickle sandwich and a soda. She wrote in her journal, read her book and tried to image things being different. She sighed as her mom crossed her mind. Not a day went by that she didn't think about her mom. Ally felt her eyes filling with tears as she thought about her smile, the way she smelled, her laugh . . . how all of it faded away . . .

Ally stood up and started pacing as she tried to not let her anxiety get to her. She took deep breaths as she hoped not to break down right now. She felt her body starting to calm as she breathed. She had a thought as she walked back over to her journal, writing in it as fast as she could get the words the out.

I can see you're sad

Even when you smile

Even when you laugh

I can see your eyes

Deep inside you wanna cry

No more crying, wipe them tears

Ally reached up at wiped her cheek at such speed and friction that her cheek became red. Ally sat back down, pulling her thighs to her chest and resting her chin on the top of her knees. She felt so alone. She only wished she did not have to leave herself numb to the world around her. She wished she could show her feelings without worrying of the repercussions. Ally placed her head in her hands, wishing more than anything she could go talk to Austin, since he was someone she could trust. However, she just couldn't. If this was hurting her this much, she did want to see Austin go through it too. She wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Ally listened as the end of lunch sounded. She grabbed her stuff and snuck back into the hallway.

. . .

Ally was sitting in English, waiting for Austin. She watched as Mr. Bronte wrote on the board. She looked at her journal, knowing it was Wednesday and she would be staying after school today. She then wondered if she should invite Austin. Would that be safe?

Before she could give it a second thought, Austin sat down next to her. "Hey," he said as he sat.

Ally smiled at him. "Hi," she really enjoyed being around Austin. He was kind, and understanding. He was so much fun that he could help her forget everything around her. "How has your day been?" She asked him.

"It's been ok," Austin said, shrugging slightly. "How about you?"

Ally bite her lip as she rethought about her day. My day has been the same . . . a rut I've been forced to walk in . . . However, she smiled and said "It's been ok." Austin smiled back. She really loved his smile. It was something that seemed to fill her with hope and strength. She was grateful for that.

Austin and Ally watched with the rest of the class as Mr. Bronte discussed the chapters. Ally thought about the chapters herself almost zoning out as Mr. Bronte spoke. Ally felt she understood how Holden felt about wanting to be accepted. She thought about his emotional distress compared to hers. She looked down at her copy of the book sitting on her desk. She remembered her Aunt buying her the book a few months ago. She remembered the book hurting her when she first read it. It was difficult to think about everything she had gone through and how much she saw herself in Holden. She wanted to bond with the people around her, form relationships, but every time she tried it wouldn't work. She snuck a look at Austin. She hoped this time would be different.

She felt her mind a drift at sea, lost in the thoughts of her hopes, but trapped by the watch of judge-filled eyes.

She decided to write that down in her journal. Thinking it might be something to think about later. As Mr. Bronte finished discussing the chapters, he asked that the class pair up and discuss the chapters.

Austin turned to Ally and smiled. Ally really enjoyed that Austin chose her. "What are you thinking of the book so far?" Ally asked him.

Austin shrugged at first not really sure how to put his thoughts into words. "I think it's interesting how Holden interacts with people." He said. He and Ally talked some more about the book, and Austin thought about how much he could tell this book effected Ally. He knew she could relate to Holden and alone he felt. He wondered how many times she had reached out for compassion only to find rejection.

The bell rang signaling the end of the day. Although Ally had some time, she really wanted to stay and work on her stuff. Austin began to get up, looking down at Ally and waiting for her. Ally bit her lip once more.

"What are you doing later?" She asked him.

"Not sure yet, why?" Austin asked. He knew he would do whatever Ally wanted.

"Do you want to go with me to Spoken Word?"
