Chapter 5

I Will Follow You into the Dark

Aang couldn't sleep that night. He didn't know if it was because Bumi kept kicking him or because he was just too worried about Katara. He sat up in bed and looked around the room. There must be something he could do. Anything that will take his mind off of Katara being kidnapped. When he went through everything in his mind, it came down to taking a walk around the Palace. As he walked he thought about the girl that worked for Azula. She was being held in the Capitol City Prison until further questioning. Something just didn't seem right about her story. After they took Katara, why didn't they just take him afterwards? If Katara was knocked out, she wouldn't be a problem until she woke up again. They would have been long gone and he would probably be dead.

He didn't want to think about death right now. Aang walked around the Palace until he got bored of his surroundings. He walked to the garden and sat in front of the pond under a tree. He pulled his knees up to his chin and started to think again. Why would Azula want Katara? Payback?

No, Azula would have had her chance while they were searching for Ursa.

Ego? That had to be it. Her Ego was hurt after the fight with Katara. She's upset she lost to a peasant maybe. Aang growled and rubbed his hands together to keep himself warm, "This doesn't make sense. None of it makes sense!"

Aang leaned back on the tree and stared at the pond. He had to talk to the girl again.

"What else do you want to know?" the girl asked. She sat in the back of the cell, leaning on the wall as she stared at Aang.

"I want to know why you're lying," Aang said, kneeling down.

The girl smirked, "I'm only lying because you haven't given me a reason to give you the truth."

Aang glared at her, "You should be giving me the truth because I will kill you if I don't get to my wife in time."

"Tsk, tsk, tsk, Avatar Aang," She chuckled, "Air Nomads are not supposed to kill."

"I have to detach myself from the Nomad way to be a true Avatar…and husband." Aang growled.

She smiled and looked at Aang, "She's being taken to an island."

"Which one?"

"Now that, you have to figure out for yourself," She cleared her throat, "You have about six hours before they arrive at the island."

Aang stood up, "One more question."

The girl shrugged, "Shoot."

"Who are you?"

Katara sucked in a sharp breath, trying not to hyperventilate from the pain she was in. She felt the ship start to slow down and before she knew it, someone was pulling her by her neck chains.

"Get up," the man spat. Katara slowly looked up at him and recognized him as one of her attackers.

"I said get up!" He yanked on the chain, causing Katara to go into a coughing fit while trying to get up. She lost some blood and she felt weak, but she was able to get up. The man shoved a cloth bag over her head, tied her hands up, and pulled her up to the deck.

There was loud creaking, people screaming out orders on the boat, and Katara smelt the salt water. She tried to wiggle out of the rope but it seemed impossible with her broken arm. Katara stopped trying as she was pushed onto a bridge from the boat to the dock.

"Here is your prize, now hand over what I asked for," Katara could hear Azula yell somewhere from behind her.

Katara heard something wiz by her head before she felt herself being pulled forward by the chain. Her feet hit the wood docks as the bridge was pulled back onto the boat.

Where the hell was she and who was she being handed off to?

Aang barged into Sokka's room and threw his clothes at him, "Get dressed! I know where Katara is!"

Sokka groaned and slowly sat up, "Wh-whadda'ya say?"

Aang started packing Sokka's things, "I know where Katara is. She's being brought to Kyoshi Island."

Sokka shot out of bed and got dressed, "Does Zuko and Toph know?"

Aang nodded, "He's setting things up so he can come with us and Toph is getting Appa ready."

Toph stood in front of Appa, her arms crossed and a grumpy look on her face, "Appa, I won't say it again. Wake up!"

Appa turned over.

Toph stomped her foot, "Appa! Come on! We have to save Katara! Now get your fluffy butt off the ground and get flying!"

After hearing Katara's name, Appa shot up and growled. Toph smiled and patted Appa, "Good, Bison."

Aang, Sokka, and Zuko came running out. It was just before sunrise so they had only 4 and a half hours left. The men threw their bags on Appa's saddle before they heard a voice.

"Dad?" Bumi and Honora stood a few yards away. Honora was rubbing her eyes, trying to get the tired out of them. Bumi was holding onto his boomerang.

Aang and Zuko walked over to them as Sokka helped Toph onto Appa.

"What are you two doing up?" Aang asked, kneeling down in front of them.

"We want to come with you!" Bumi said, a determined look on his face.

Honora nodded, "I'm more controlled with my bending, Uncle! I can help!"

"We both can!" Bumi cried, holding Honora's hand.

Aang smiled sadly and picked up Bumi as Zuko picked up Honora.

Zuko kissed the top of Honora's head, "Ora, you are an amazing bender. The best one that I know. But this is very dangerous." Zuko looked Honora in the eye, "I love you too much to let you do this."

Honora had tears in her eyes but she nodded.

Zuko smiled, "I have a more important mission for you to do. Do you wanna do it?"

Honora nodded quickly, "Yeah!"

Zuko smiled, "I need you to guard Bumi for me."

"Because he sucks at fighting right?" Honora giggled.

Zuko smiled as Bumi yelled at her, "Exactly." Mai came out into the garden and walked over to Zuko and Honora. Zuko handed Honora to Mai.

"Be careful. Okay?" Mai looked at him.

Zuko looked at Mai, "I'm sorry you can't come with us."

Mai kissed Zuko, "I have people to protect here. Ursa will be coming over with Ikem and Kiyi."

Bumi looked at her father, "Dad?"

Aang looked at him, "Hmm?"

Bumi hugged him, "Bring back mom."

Aang wrapped his arms around his son and promised, "I will. I won't come back without her."

Bumi pulled a bag out of his pocket, "Give mom this for me."

Aang took it and looked in the bag, "Seal Jerky?"

Bumi smiled, "I made it for her...I never got to give it to her."

Aang closed the bag and handed it back to Bumi, "She will love it even more if you give it to her when she come back."

Bumi took the bag and held it to his chest. Aang ruffled his hair and set him down, "Protect yourself. If anything happens, do whatever you need to survive." Bumi nodded and walked next to Mai.

Mai looked down at him and frowned before setting Honora down next to Bumi and kneeling infront of both of them, "Your fathers are brave and capable men. They will bring your Mother home and they will bring you Aunt home."

Bumi smiled, "Thank you, Aunt Mai." Mai nodded, "...do you need a hug?"

Bumi giggled, "You're funny when you try to be nice."

Mai ruffled his hair, "I knew I liked you for a reason."

Mai stood back up and looked at the guys, "Be safe. Both of you."

The guys nodded before they got on Appa and flew off.
