Chapter 14

I herd the sound of sirens. Matt stroking my hair. The constant feeling of being stabbed in my tummy present always, and getting worse.

"Matt," I said weakly.

"Karen, what is it? What's the matter love?" He said, his voice full of emotion as though he was trying to contain a wave of tears.

"I'm okay, don't worry. Have you told anyone? Does anyone know what's happening?" I said, lifting my hand away from my belly to stroke his cheek.

"We won't know what's happening until we get you to the hospital Miss Gillan." I herd a woman paramedic say near to me. Matt leaned into my touch, for comfort.

As I was stroking his cheek, my fingers felt wetness. He was crying. Instinctively, I rubbed it away and pulled his chin towards me.

"Karen, it's not the time." I herd Matt say, inches away from my own face.

"Shut up stupid face, and kiss me." I replied. I herd a quiet cough, and we broke apart. I saw the paramedic chuckling to herself , while the driver was just frowning.

We must have arrived at the hospital because when I woke up, there was a bright white light above me. I could feel someone clutching at my hand, when my sight became focused on this figure, I worked out it was Matt.

"Karen, Kaz. Oh my god." I herd Matt mutter, relieved.

"Matt, I'm okay really." I said trying to reassure him.

"I have to disagree." I herd someone say from the doorway.

"What? Doctor what's the matter?" Matt asked, doctor looked sympathetic. I could already sense what he was going to say next.

"I'm truly sorry, Miss Gillan."

"Please tell us what's happened now." I said, knowing what was coming next. I didn't like it one bit.

"I'm afraid you've lost one of your babies."

Once the news was confirmed, all I was feeling was loss. Feeling the loss of one of my little babies. Ours. Without even realising it, my eyes were pouring with tears.

I looked over to Matt, worried.

"Matt." I said softly. He didn't respond.

"Matthew." I said a notch louder. He raised his head from his hands, what I saw made my heart grow heavy. His cheeks were streaked with tears, his eyes slightly red from crying.

"Matt, please look at me." I pleaded. He moved his hands to use the pad of his thumb to stroke my cheek, and I leaned into his touch. I pulled on the lapels of his jacket to move his face towards mine. Our foreheads were touching as we stared into each others eyes. Suddenly, Matt bumped his nose against mine.

"What was that?" I asked, confused.

"What? It's how cats show affection." he replied simply, repeating the movement.

I smiled at him and did it to him. He chuckled in response and laced our fingers together. We remained like that for a good 10 minutes, maybe longer I didn't pay much attention to time.

"I suppose we should let our families know what's happened, yeah Karen?" Matt said, startling me.

"I suppose." I sighed, thinking back to how mum had reacted, oh god how will she react now? She has a right to know, I'm just worried how she react.

"Are you sure?" he asked.

"Yeah I guess." I replied simply.

"Karen what's the matter?" Matt asked, obviously worried.

"Oh nothing."

"Karen."

"It's just I'm worried how mum will react when she finds out, she wasn't exactly supportive when she found out." I said, a tear creeping down my cheek.

"hey," Matt whispered, wiping the stray tear with his thumb.

"it will be okay, I'm here with you. Nobody has to find out if you don't want them to."

"Somebody has to know besides us, what about your mum and dad?" I asked.

"Yeah, I will call mum now for you." he replied getting up and kissing my forehead.

"Can I go home yet doctor?" I asked.

"Of course, as long as you will continue watching for any signs." He said seriously.

"I will, I don't want to loose this baby too." I agreed.

At that moment Matt entered the room again.

"Mum sends her love, I'm sure dad does too. She also says she would visit but the trains aren't working at the moment. Are you allowed home yet?"

"Yeah the doctor said I can as long as I keep an eye out for any signs." I told him.

"Okay, lets pack up your stuff." he said, a little too excited.

"What's got you all excited Matthew?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at him.

"I just want to get you home and make you whatever you want, Nutella on toast, with a side of beetroot?" He smiled at me.

"That would be lovely. How are we gonna get home though? You didn't bring the car." I questioned.

"We'll get a taxi, it doesn't matter." He replied, still packing my things into a bag.

"Hey, come here." I said.

"What?" Matt replied, walking towards me. As he reached me I pulled on his collar to crash his lips against mine. He pulled back to say;

"Can't you wait until we get home? What I want to do isn't suitable for a hospital."

I giggled at that. I sighed for effect.

"I guess."

Matt was acting strange on the way home, stranger than normal. He was up to something, I had my suspicions what he was up to, not certain though.

"Let me get the door seen as you made me walk with empty hands." I said outside the front of my apartment.

"No, it's okay. I have it."

What I saw next confirmed my suspicions…
