Prompt from butterflykisses0 - Robin walks in on Regina taking a nap, he stays looking at her while she slept
"I think I'm in love with Regina." Robin blurted out, not remotely sure where to start the conversation.
It was a long day at the station. Robin was the only one there today, due to the fact that Emma was on her honeymoon and Charming said something about needed a day off to spend with his family. The Thief really didn't mind. Storybrooke tended to be rather quiet these days. The biggest thing that he needed to do was fight boredom. Which is why it had been a long day. So when he entered his home he was more than glad to hear his son laughing gleefully with his big brother.
The door opened and Roland ran knowing his father was home. He had a wonderful day playing with his big brother and Mama. "Papa! Henry told me all about his adventures, and we had adventures, and he said he used to have a bunny for a pet! An actual bunny! Can we get a dog? Or a dragon? That would be the best..."
As Roland continued to carry on about his day and outlandish ideas about a dragon for a pet, Robin looked over to the older of the two boys. Henry offered a smile that he gladly returned. The thief was so glad Henry was always on his side. Even when he foolishly turned to his ex-wife when he clearly should have been with his Queen. Roland's story finally started to wind down. "Sounds like you had a full day my boy. Now I have an important question for you." He smiled at the expectant look he was given. "Where is your Mama?" It was odd that she had not greeted him yet. Normally she met him at the door.
"Taking a nap. She said the baby was making her sleepy." Roland shrugged and ran off to play some more.
Immediately understanding, Robin shot a glance once again to his older son. "I'm going to go check on her." With that he climbed the stairs to their bedroom. As promised, his Queen was resting peacefully on their bed. He took a moment to admire the view of her chest rising and falling. Of the slight swell of her stomach that held their growing child. It amazed him how much he loved the sleeping woman. His mind began to drift to the first time he admitted he loved her. Except it wasn't to her.
"I think I'm in love with Regina." Robin blurted out, not remotely sure where to start the conversation.
Charming almost choked on his drink. "What?" It was the only thing that he could manage. The topic of the Queens love life had been an unfortunate topic between his wife and himself, but he never thought it would be him that had to actually deal with one of Regina's suitors. Snow insisted that the two were a match made in heaven, but the Prince could not see it. All they did was bicker and argue. The former Thief coming to him and saying that he wanted to kill the Queen was a much more likely story in his mind.
Robin paced the floor of the council room. He intended on seeing Snow because he thought she would be of more help. Instead he found the room empty except for the Prince. "I said I think I love the Queen. Only I have no clue how to tell her." They had been going back and forth for months. Defeating Zelena was top priority, but he had fallen for her wit and snark and beauty. No one had managed to match the amount of sassyness he generally had, until her. No one had filled his mind this completely since Marion. "Can you help me?"
For a moment Charming stood shocked. Now he wanted help? "Uhh, You have picked one of the most impossible women I know. And that is including my wife." Snow was difficult at times, but Regina took the cake for challenges. "What makes you think you love that woman? All you two do is fight." He was not trying to burst Robin's bubble. Nor deny the Queen a happy ending if she could find it with the Thief. It was just so hard for Charming to wrap his head around someone actually wanting to put up with Regina's stubborn head.
"That's not fighting. That's flirting." It made sense that it could be hard to see what was beneath the little spats they had. Robin always could sense that the Queen was not actually mad at him. That she just needed someone who would take the verbal knives and throw them back at her. "She may be impossible, but I can't think of anyone else but her."
The look on Robin's face confirmed his feelings to Charming. It was the same look the Prince had when looking at his wife. "Well my friend," He laid a hand on the other man's back as a comfort. "You are insane. But if you really want to try with Regina I suggest honesty. She has been through more than you know. If you are completely honest with her you might have a chance." Even though Charming thought that chance was slim, it was still a chance. He really didn't think anything would work to tame the Queens heart. At least not with them being in the Enchanted Forest and her separated from Henry, but he would do all he could to help the Thief.
Robin took the advice and uses it. A few days later, he approached her while she was sitting in the forest. Snow's due date was fast approaching and they were still far away from a solution to their Zelena problem. The Queen and Thief came out to this spot to think and, more than not, flirt in their own special way. Robin made sure to make noise on his way through so not to scare her. "Penny for your thoughts?" He just managed to see her wipe a tear away before sitting down.
She could not understand this man. He was always around. Especially when she didn't want him to be. She and Snow had a fight before Regina came out to the woods. She was trying so hard to come up with solutions to stop her sister. Most of them included rather harsh consequences, and Snow wanted no part of them. That is what had gotten them into a spat. She felt so alone again and her thoughts immediately went to Henry. How he might be doing, what he might be doing, and if Emma was making sure he was eating his vegetables. Coming out to the forest was such a strange comfort to her. Maybe it was because she knew that sooner or later Robin would show up and she could take her annoyance out on him. He took all of her comments and either shot them back, or accepted them and came back for more. It made no sense to her. "My thoughts are worth more than you could come up with."
He didn't want to do this right now. He was a man on a mission, but he could see the hurt in her eyes. "Well, I will have to find a treasure room then." She glanced at him with the oddest expression. It was as if no one had ever offered to care enough to do something like that. The idea made his heart break. "Regina, I am here for you." She rolled her eyes. "I mean it. No matter what, you can tell me what is bothering you." They didn't share many tender moments, but he tried to make them available to her. It was clear that no one else did. Or she didn't let them.
She regarded him for a moment with disbelief. "Why on earth would I tell you my problems?" The truth was that she wanted him to pry. She wanted him to want to know her issues. But there was a part of her that couldn't let him. Regina would not let herself have any happiness while separated from her son. She felt so alone and thought she deserved to be there. "What gives you the right to speak to me like that?" Lashing out was all she knew.
"I have the right because I care." He could see the immediate effect his words had. See the terror and nonacceptance in her eyes. It was now or never. "I want you to be happy, and I want to help you get there." He stopped for a moment truly unsure of his next words. "I love you."
Her hand moved faster than her mind. Right across his face. The sound of the slap was more deafening to her than the words he had spoken. "You have no right to say that. You don't know who I am and more importantly you have no idea the things I can do to you." She arose and just barely heard his whisper.
The sting on his cheek was more of an answer than her wrath. She was scared and he knew it. Scared of letting herself love him as well. But the violence was only proof that she did care as much as he did. "In your time then." And he watched her leave.
That happened just before they convened in the council room to talk and she was beyond pissed that he had been invited. As he watch her stir in her sleep he was brought out of his memories. How far they had come, and how far they had yet to go. He walked over to the bed and placed a kiss on her brow, lips, and stomach. She began to stir and he quickly climbed in with her.
Knowing that she could always wake up to the smell of forest in her nostrils was one of the biggest perks to marrying the love of her life. "Your home." She hadn't opened her eyes, but when Regina felt the bed sink down she cuddled up to her husband. "I thought you would be late. Dinner isn't even started." Her words were raspy from sleep.
Robin smiled. Clearly she did not realize how long she had been sleeping. "I am late. You just decided to become Sleeping Beauty." Another kiss to her forehead and her eyes fluttered opened. The chocolate brown that he desperately prayed their child inherited. "I love to watch you sleep. I'll go start dinner."
Watching him leave the room Regina wondered what on earth had brought on that comment.
Hope that was what you were looking for.
Again I apologize for the wait. More to come soon! R&R and maybe it will happen faster ;)
