Chapter 3: To Be or Not To Be

Harry spent part of her afternoon hidden in the room of requirements. That was until Hermione had gotten her out of the room and back to their tower. He had spent the time in the room contemplating how much his life had changed, check that how much her life had change. Never in a millions years would she had imagine something like this would happen to her. Yes, he knew magic was real and sometimes it took a life form of its own. But that it could make decisions for a persons well being and changed them to magics will was mind boggling. Until yesterday she had been the boy destined by the fates to kill the darkest lord of the age. All he had known was that his life carried a dark theme of kill or be killed.

Now on top of that he had to deal with a sex change. Ha! He was a magical tranny. That thought has left Harry breathless for a few minutes due to the endless laughter. The muggle transgendered community would had benefited highly from this potion Harry thought. Now she laid on her bed, as she played with the hem of her green comforter, she took in a deep breath that came out as body quaking sigh. Tears gather in her eyes again and she let the tears spill as she remembered again what had taken place in the common room of the Gryffindor Tower.

"Oh Harry! Why is it that every time there's trouble you're in the middle of it?" Hermione said to the petite brunette standing next to her.

"Trust me Mione," Harry said in exasperation, "I've been asking the same question for the past six years. What am I going to do?"

"The same thing you always do. You carry on as yourself, Harry. You're no different today, than you were yesterday or the day before. Just know I will always love you. Just because you now have a different set of reproductive system, it does not change who you are. You just went from being my brother to being my sister!"

"What?" Harry exclaimed equally amused and scandalized in slight terror.

"My love for you will not change, Harry. You'll be the same in my eyes. Plus, now you can join me in my trials and tribulations of being a woman. We can do out hairs, nails, and make up! We can also play dress up and gorge on ice cream and chocolate when we're on our time of the month."

"Merlin, you're bloody mental Hermione," Harry said as the green eyed brunettes' complexion took a greenish tint, "Now I see why you're so cheery with me now being a girl."

"Oh, come on, Harry!" Hermione exclaimed grinning at the shorter Harry, "I am just excited that I will finally have a roommate that gets me! I am telling you this castle is magnificent! I woke up in a new room on the 6th years dorm rooms floor. All of my belongings were there as well as a second bed and second set of furniture. It was like Hogwarts knew there was going to be a new female student."

"Great!" Harry replied, her tone heavy with sarcasm, "Even the castle knew."

"Of course it did Harry! Now lets go to the tower. So you can see your new room and unpack and decorate. Always remember that I'll have your back."

Harry smiled at Hermione at her words. Then threw her arm around the taller girls waist and squeezed her tight. Then arm in arm they headed to the Gryffindor tower. But not before Harry glared at the Hogwarts corridor and childishly stuck her tongue out at the wall to her right. For a passing moment she could have sworn that the wall twinkled for a bit as if mocking her.

As Harry and Hermione walked from the Great Hall to the staircases. Harry heard people talking and whispering about him. None made sense and most creeped her out. She did not realized until now how perverted was a large majority of the male population at Hogwarts. Or that so many girls had liked him as a male. A lot of girls were bemoaning the loss of the male Harry and their missed shot at being the boy-who-lived girlfriend. What scared Harry was that some girls had a wicked gleam in their eyes that had her shuffling closer to Hermione and turning her eyes to the ground as she let Hermione guide them to their tower.

When the finally made it to the tower Hermione had to practically peeled Harry off of her side. She then said the password while The Fat Lady kept smirking and winking at Harry. As soon as they stepped through the corridor and into the common room the two brunettes came to a stop when they met with the furious looking faces of the two youngest Weasleys. Years of unwanted soldier-like conditioning from previous encounters with Voldemort and his Death Eaters reared its head and Harry discreetly withdrew her wand from the wand holster attached to his left wrist.

And true to form, Ronald Weasley was the one to explode. For a short moment Harry was fascinated by the many red colors Ron's face turned as he started his beastly screaming.

"How could you?" Ron demanded of Harry.

"What?" Harry asked the only word that made sense in his jumbled thoughts.

"How could you betray us?" Ron asked once again, this time sounding like a screeching bull horn, "You betrayed us! Me and Ginny! How could you do this to us?"

"The proper syntax is Ginny and I," Hermione interrupted Ron, making him flush an even darker red due to embarrassment, "Also, what are you talking about? Betrayal?"

Hermione stopped talking when she noticed Harry's emerald green eyes taking a faint glow. She knew that only happened when Harry was trying to reign in his temper and in turn keep control of his still growing magical core.

"What in the bloody hell are you talking about Ron?" Harry said in a low tone through almost gritted teeth which was worse than if the boy turned girl had actually screamed, "Betrayed? Do you really think that I wanted this to happened? That on top of all the load I carry on my shoulders, that I wanted this too? Is your opinion of me that low? That you'd think I would go out of my way to make my life more complicated than it is already? This was an accident. I didn't want this for this happen. I wish it had not happened but it did. I am the one that has to deal with it. Why are you two the ones complaining?"

"That's just wrong Harry," Ginny finally spoke, "You're not a girl. You're a boy. We're supposed to be together. Have you stop to think that maybe, just maybe, you've been lied to? That there is a potion to reverse this side freak show you've got going on and you're just being told otherwise."

"First off, I am not a freak," Harry said almost hissing at the two red heads, "I may have been born male but I am now a female. Physically I may not have the same sex but my essence has not changed. Second, Pompfrey, Snape, McGonogall, and Dumbledore all agree that there is no antidote in existence. Lastly, I was never going to be with you Ginny. I saw you as my best friend's sister and now I see you as a sister."

"What?" Both Weasley's exclaimed.

"Why? You-you filthy little orphaned freak!" Ginny exploded stunning everyone in the common room into silence, " How could you? You're disgusting, I've always loved you and you just love me as a little sister?"

"Ginny it's not my fault that you have filled yourself with illusions of something that was never going to happen," Harry said and then went on further, "I've never lead you on, I've never made you any promises, I've always treated you as a friend and a sister. It's not my fault that you let yourself believe that there could be something between us. That's your fault not mine."

Harry paused, looking away from Ginny, and turning to face his male best friend of six years.

"Ron, mate, I know you understand" Harry said, "How can you possibly think that I wanted to be turned into a female? There's nothing that can be done. Is there really a difference as to whether I am a female or male? I am still Harry Potter."

"Harry, I am going to say this once" Ron finally said, "You're nothing to me! You betrayed us, you foul git!"

"It's fourth year all over again," Harry said in a resigned but accepting tone, " This just shows me who you really are Ron. An immature, selfish, and greedy person. I have done nothing to you but be a supporting friend, through thick and thin. Yet, to you, an unpreventable accident, means that I somehow betrayed you and our friendship? You know what? I will be fine without you two in my life."

Then it all happened in a flash. Both Ron and Ginny raised their wands at Harry. Harry and Hermione hesitated because they were their friends. However, as Ron started to say confringo and Ginny started to mutter deffindo. Hermione raised her wand in blinding speed and casted expelliarmus with so much magical compulsion behind the muttered incantation that the two red heads were blasted backwards against the mantel above the fireplace and then they fell onto the floor. Then she petrified them and sent her Patronus to fetch both Dumbledore and McGonagall.

Ten minutes later when Dumbledore and McGonagall arrived, Ron and Ginny were still laying on the floor in their frozen states. Hermione was furiously pacing back and forth in front of Harry whom she was keeping out of sight. Harry sat on the sofa chair seeming to be in complete shock. Everyone else in the common room was either too in shock to move, had ran away to hide in their bedrooms, or too terrified of Hermione and her wrath to leave at all.

"What happened Miss Granger?" The Head of Gryffindor asked of the witch.

"Ron and Ginny," Hermione spat angrily, "tried to hex Harry. The confronted Harry about her new appearance. They accused her of betraying them by becoming a girl. They also insinuated that both of you along with Professor Snape and Madam Pompfrey lied about the possible existence of a cure."

"What occurred that caused their physical state?" The Headmaster of Hogwarts then asked Hermione.

"Ron and Ginny attempted to hex Harry with Confringo and Deffindo respectively."

"Very well Miss Granger," Dumbledore replied, "We will sort this out in my office. Minerva, please levitate the siblings to my office. Harry, Hermione please come with me. The rest of you please be as you were."

In a rush everyone moved to do as they were told. Professor McGonagall levitated the students to her will until they reached the Headmasters office. While Dumbledore walked back, Hermione gently stirred Harry through the hallways to the office they have come to know intimately in the course of six years. Hermione grimaced when all that Harry did was lean her head onto her shoulder. She sincerely hoped that at the very least Ronald and Ginevra were expelled from Hogwarts.

When they got to the office, McGonagall gently lowered the red headed siblings onto the floor. While Hermione, once again, led Harry to take a seat, she then conjured water and drank some from the transfigured cup and then handed the cup to Harry. The Headmaster walked towards his desk and sat on his chair as he warily watched Hermione pace back and forth in front of her best friend. The Headmaster realize that would be as calm as the young woman would be considering the situation. He motions for Minerva to revive the siblings as he lowers his wand from his holster in case the agitated student becomes wand friendly.

"Rennervate," The Head of Gryffindor said as she waved her wand over the stunned bodies. As they came to, they sat up clearly confused.

"What's going on?" Ron asked idiotically. While Ginny just looked at the floor, cheeks flushed, as they both got to their feet.

"What's going on?" Hermione parrotted astounded, "The two of your attempted to kill Harry and all you've got to say is 'what's going on'?"

"Now Mione," Ginny began to say but was abruptly cut off.

"DO NOT CALL ME MIONE!" The brunette screamed cutting off the ginger girl, "You do not deserve the privilege to call me by such a name. Call me Granger or don't call me by any name at all. I have a very vivid memory if what happened back at the tower. I will not hesitate to show the memory to The Prophet, The Minister of Magic, and The Wizengamot. Do Not test ME Weasley."

"Miss Granger please calm down." Her head of house exclaimed.

"Calm down?" she asked in a voice with constrained anger, "As far as I am concerned Confringo and Diffindo are not exactly spells that constitutes a walk in the park when aimed at the human body! So forgive me for my rather exalted constitution when two buffoons try to kill my best friend."

"Well Headmaster," McGonagall began as she turned with a pensive face towards her boss, "As opposed as I am of stripping and binding magic. I believe that these two deserve a lesson that is driven to their cores. What Ronald and Ginevra attempted is horrible and they should pay accordingly."

"I agree with you Minerva." Stated the grayed wizard, "As opposed as I am to going to the extreme to punish children. I believe it is required in this situation. Mr. and Miss Weasley, as per the Hogwarts Board of Governors, I have the power to bind the magical core of any student or students, for up to two months."

As the Weasley began to realize the full extent of their punishment they began to protest. However, they shut their mouths when Dumbledore held up a hand at them. Hermione smiled in triumph. While Harry pulled her feet up onto the arm chair he was sitting up and buried his face onto the robes that layed out on his lap.

"Ronald Billius Weasley, Ginerva Molly Weasley, I hereby, bind your magical core," Dumbledore began his sentence, "By the powers bestowed upon as Headmaster through the powers the founders placed on Hogwarts, the Board of Governors, and the Ministry of Magic. The two of you are punished for two months."

"But-"

"NO!"

"Opibus mihi impositum conliga duae virtutes. Sic fiat." Dumbledore chanted three times as his wand glowed silver and two celestial blue string shot out and wrapped around each sibling. The two redheads glowed the same color of light and then their wands jumped onto McGonagall's hands.

"Headmaster," Minerva called to get the elders attention, " I will be taking these two to my office for further punishments. I'll see you all in the morning in the Great hall."

"Good Evening Professor." Called Hermione to the professor as Harry parrotted the greeting and Dumbledore waved to her.

"Professor?" Hermione said a few minutes later, "Why are we being kept behind?"

"I believe Miss Potter has a question for me." The Headmaster answered, "More of a request rather."

"Harry?" Hermione asked as she turned towards her best friend, "What is it? What's going on?"

"Am sorry Hermione. I really am," Harry began in a whisper but the voice got stronger as she continued to speak, "But I can't stay in Gryffindor. Not after what happened."

"Oh Harry," Hermione said in a broken whisper, "I am behind you until the end. Do not doubt that. Nothing will change between us, no matter the color of our house banner."

"Headmaster, I want to be re-sorted." Dumbledore merely nodded and his eyes twinkled at her.

With that said Harry picked up the old sorting hat and sat down on the chair she had been sitting down. She sat down and stared down at the hat in her hands. She remembered the other house the hat had wanted to place her in. Slytherin. The possibility scared her but deep down she knew she had to do it. She took a deep breath and placed the hat on her head.

"Hmmm," The hat began, "You've changed in the past six years. Your trials and tribulations have shaped you. Your cunning, ambition, and bravery has kept you true to yourself. Despite everything, the lions heart is in the snake's hand."

At that both Dumbledore and Hermione frowned.

"Just like in your first sorting Miss Potter," The Hat said, " I'll ask one last time. Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Well then, SLYTHERIN!"

Hermione gasped and Dumbledore smiled. Harry looked down and was surprised when everything that was Gryffindor on his robes changed to Slytherin. With a grin Harry jumped off the chair, placed the hat on the seat, and moved to sit in front of the Headmaster's desk.

"Well Harry, I did-"

"Hold on," Hermione interrupted the man, "I want to be resorted as well."

"Now, Hermione you don't have to-"

"Harry please stop," Hermione said, "Yes, I am partly doing this to protect you. But I am mostly doing this because after what happened today I don't want to be a Gryffindor. Remember together until the end."

"Fine. Are you sure?"

"More than anything." Hermione picked up the old hat a sat down on the chair and with no hesitation what so ever she placed the hat on her surprising tame hair.

"Well, this is a surprise," The hat began, "A snake in a lion's clothing. Hermione Granger I think I was mistaken about you the first time. You have been so brave and the first to prove yourself. It's however your ambition and intelligence that drives you not to mention your loyalty and love for those you consider family. I should have done this from the beginning. Wrong twice for the first time in more than a millenia. Right then, SLYTHERIN!"
