Kill & Collect

Chapter 11

A pounding on the motel room door roused both women from their slumber. Instantly on alert, Jane immediately hopped out of the bed and grabbed her gun from the nightstand. She was stark naked, but still ready for any danger as she moved towards the door. Maura sat up in the bed and watched her, covering her nakedness with the bed sheets. Jane cautiously took a peek through the peephole and soon lowered her gun at who she saw.

"It's Jeremy," she quietly said to Maura. "Just a sec!" She hollered. The brunette quickly maneuvered around the room, throwing on her black tank top and then her jeans. Within seconds she was opening the door, but only halfway so Maura would not be seen in the bed.

"Good morning," Jeremy greeted with a smile. "Are you ladies ready to go?"

Jane grimaced. "Actually, we uh… we kind of overslept. Can you give us like twenty extra minutes?"

Jeremy let out a sigh but nodded his head in understanding. "Dad won't be too happy to hear that. He's super strict about his takeoff times but I doubt a little waiting will kill him. You're the paying customer, right?"

Jane lightly smiled. "Thanks, Jeremy. We'll get ready as fast as we can."

"Alright. I'm going to pop by the market. Uh, how about I pick you guys up some breakfast?"

"Oh, Jeremy you don't have to…"

"You haven't eaten, right?"

Jane shrugged and the man smirked. "Two breakfast burritos coming right up."

The brunette gave a nod and smiled softly. "Thanks."

"Not a probl- Whoa!" Jeremy suddenly exclaimed, eyes wide.

Jane practically jumped out of her skin at his interjection. "What? What is it?"

Jeremy leaned forward slightly and narrowed his eyes. "You have… it looks like someone bit you. You have teeth marks on your shoulder," he curiously observed.

"Oh, uh…" Jane felt her face grow hot and she glanced over her shoulder at Maura in the bed. The blonde had a guilty look on her face but was clearly hiding a smile. Jane turned back to Jeremy, who was looking more confused by the second. "This is just…"

"Did it happen in the bar fight?" Jeremy questioned.

"Well…"

"My Dad told me about it and how you and Maura stood up to this guy. He said both of you were really brave." Jane was about to speak but Jeremy beat her to it. "I had no idea the guy bit you," he went on. "What a jackass."

"Uh, yeah, yeah, he was a jack-ass," Jane shrugged.

"Well, I'm sure you showed him. Okay, I'll let you guys get ready and I'll be back in thirty."

"Okay, sounds good." Jane closed the door and turned to Maura. The blonde was covering her mouth with the bed sheet dying in a fit of giggles.

"Do you find something funny?" Jane asked.

"Mm-mm," Maura shook her head, but then could not stop the next bout of laughter that fell upon her.

"Hey!" Jane tried to look upset, but failed miserably. "How about you try explaining how a bite mark ended up on your shoulder?" This only made Maura laugh even more and that was the last straw for Jane. Within seconds, the brunette was jumping onto the bed, causing the blonde to squeal with more laughter. Jane's fingers were instantly upon Maura's ribs, tickling her with no mercy. Maura was wiggling all over the bed, laughing and trying to catch her breath.

"Okay! Okay! I'm sorry!" the blonde proclaimed.

After a moment, Jane finally stopped and looked down at the blonde below her. Maura's cheeks were flushed and a beaming smile was on her face. Jane promised herself in that moment that she would try for the rest of her life to have Maura smile at her this way. The brunette leaned in and placed a chaste kiss on Maura's lips. "We gotta get ready," she finally said. "Jeremy gave us an extra half hour."

"Okay," the blonde nodded. Maura waited for Jane to move off of her before climbing out of the bed. Jane raised a brow at Maura's naked form as the honey-blonde crossed the room and headed into the bathroom. How did she get so lucky? Not able to help herself, Jane followed the blonde into the restroom and saw Maura bent over the tub, attempting to start the shower. Jane eyed the blonde's shapely behind and an amusing thought crossed her mind. She quietly crept behind the other woman and without warning, gave the blonde's ass a whack with her palm, causing a satisfying slap to echo throughout the small bathroom. Maura yelped in surprise and whirled around on Jane. "Why you…"

But the words died on Maura's lips when Jane captured her mouth in a kiss. She felt Jane's strong arms wrap around her waist and Maura's arms automatically circled the brunette's neck, allowing herself to sink against Jane. The kiss was deep and aggressive. Neither one of them wanted it to end.

Jane knew if they did not stop they would end up in bed again. She broke the kiss and looked into dark hazel eyes. "You're very addicting, Maura Isles," Jane whispered against the blonde's lips.

The blonde smiled brightly. "As are you, Jane Rizzoli."

It warmed Jane's heart to hear someone speak her full name; her real name as though she were a real person again. Jane pulled Maura into a hug and gently held her close. Maura was slightly taken aback by the intimate gesture but snuggled further into the brunette's embrace. She never felt so safe and cared for in all her life. It was amazing that all it took was Jane holding her.

They broke the embrace and grinned at one another. "Alright, um… you get in there. We now have about 25 minutes to be ready."

"Actually, 23 minutes and 35 seconds, 34, 33, 32…"

"Maur? Really?"

Maura gave a playful smile. "I won't be long."

Jane smirked and shook her head before stepping out of the bathroom allowing Maura to take her quick shower.

Jeremy walked into the hangar with Jane and Maura on his heels. Korsak walked from behind the small Cessna P210 plane with a none-too-happy expression on his face. "Where the hell were you? I said take-off was at 6am sharp. It's 6:27!"

"Sorry, Pop I..."

"It was a simple job. Pick them up and…"

"It was our fault, Mr. Korsak," Maura spoke up, taking a step forward. "I'm afraid we didn't set the alarm. Jeremy was kind enough to give us some extra time to get ready."

Korsak went slightly goo-goo eyed as the blonde addressed him and then gave a friendly smile. "You can call me, Vince. And I understand. These things happen, right?"

A bewildered expression fell over Jeremy's face and Jane only smirked. "What? Pop, you're not mad?"

"Of course, not," he frowned. "We're only human, right?"

"Right," Jeremy deadpanned. Usually his father blew a top if clients or even family members were not on schedule. He was always amazed by how a pretty face made his father such a pushover. Rolling his eyes he turned to Jane. "Anyway, Jane, I meant to tell you. I tried to give Frost a call about his truck, but there was no answer at his house."

A solemn expression fell over both women's faces at the mention of the young man. Jeremy furrowed his brows at their expressions. "Is there a problem?"

Jane shook out of her thoughts. "Um, no. There shouldn't be. He was probably out in the woods or something. You know, Frost."

Jeremy smiled. "Yeah, I'll just try him again this morning."

Jane gave a nod but said nothing in return. She glanced at Maura and the blonde sadly lowered her eyes to the ground.

"Okay," Korsak clapped his hands together, breaking the awkward moment. "Let's load 'em up."

Jeremy turned to Jane and Maura with a smile. "You guys have a safe trip," he said shaking each of their hands. "It was nice meeting you."

"You too, Jeremy," Jane politely replied.

"Yes, good to meet you. Thank you again for the breakfast," Maura said.

Jeremy smiled with a nod and watched the two women head over to the plane. Maura climbed into the tight space first, allowing Korsak to assist her up the few steps and Jane soon followed. The two of them settled in their seats and Jane looked around. "Wow. This is sort of neat. I've never flown in a plane this small."

Maura gave a small smile. "Nor have I."

Jane looked out the window and saw Jeremy and Korsak share a brief hug before the older man climbed into the plane. First he made sure they were properly fastened in their belts and then showed them how to wear their masks when the time came to put them on.

"Okay. You both have headsets beside your chairs. Go ahead and put those on. This is the only way you'll be able to hear me and vice versa. The plane gets too loud."

Jane and Maura did as instructed and then Korsak climbed to the front of the plane and sat in the pilot's seat. Jane looked over at the blonde and noticed her taking heavier breaths than normal. "You okay?"

Maura let out a nervous chuckle. "Yes, I… I just don't do so well with the takeoff that's all."

"I thought you were used to flying."

"I am. It's just the takeoff makes me a little nervous every time."

Jane reached over and placed Maura's hand in her own. She did not say anything, just gave a small smile and the blonde felt her heart melt at how sweet Jane was being.

Korsak soon got the engine running and the propeller at the front of the plane began to spin. "Masks on ladies." They heard his voice command over the headset. "Here we go."

As soon they finished placing the masks on their faces, Jane felt Maura grasp her hand once again. The brunette's smile was covered, but she gave the blonde's hand an encouraging squeeze.

The plane was soon rolling out of the hangar and maneuvering onto the runway.

"Jay Bird, confirmation for takeoff?" Korsak asked on the headset.

"Affirmative, Sky Hawk. All clear."

Jane recognized the other voice on the headset as Jeremy.

"Copy that."

"Have a safe trip," the younger man said.

"I hope you ladies used the bathroom. We're in for a five hour flight here," Korsak said to them.

The small plane began to increase in speed as it rolled down the runway, preparing for takeoff. Suddenly, movement caught Korsak's eye coming from the east side of the runway. "What the hell? What are these guys doing on my airstrip?" he asked.

Jane looked out the window and felt her heart jump up into her throat. There were two black sedans headed towards the side of the plane at top speed. She immediately recognized them as Hoyt's men.

The plane began to slow down and that's when the brunette realized Korsak was applying the brakes. "No!" she shouted. She quickly unbuckled her belt and moved up by Korsak, shouting over his shoulder. "Korsak! We have to get out of here!"

"What?! Why?! Are they after you two?!"

"Yes! There's no time to explain, but…"

"FEDS?!"

"No! They're…"

The sound of gunfire, cut Jane off mid-sentence. Korsak looked out the side window and saw one of the men leaning out of a vehicle, aiming a gun at the plane.

"Holy shit! Those definitely aren't FEDS." He pushed the throttle forward increasing the plane's speed down the runway. "Get back in your seat, Jane!" He shouted. "I'm getting us outta here!"

Jane rushed back to her seat and fastened the belt back around her waist. Maura's heart was racing as she frantically looked around. She could not see Hoyt's men from her vantage point but she flinched every time a gunshot sounded.

A few more bullets could be heard ricocheting off the small plane before Korsak elevated them from the ground. Moments later they were in the air and finally out of the line of fire. Both Jane and Maura were breathing heavily, knowing that was a close call.

"You two okay?" Korsak asked over the headset.

With a shaky hand, Jane hit the button for her headset. "Yes. We're fine," she breathed.

"Jesus Christ. Those guys were really coming at us," Korsak went on. "I just hope that…" Realization suddenly hit the older man. "Oh, my God, Jeremy. Shit, Jeremy is still out there! Jay Bird?! Jeremy! Talk to me son! Are you alright?! Jeremy?!"

Korsak held his breath, waiting for a response. Only static could be heard over the line.

Jane swallowed, knowing the older man could only be thinking the worst. She and Maura exchanged worried glances before she spoke in the headset. "I'm sorry, Korsak," Jane said. "But we can't go back."

"I know that goddamn it!" He shot back. The anger and fear raged in his voice. "Listen, I don't know what kind of trouble you girls are in but you better pray that my boy is okay."

They continued to fly in silence and the guilt weighed heavily over Jane and Maura's hearts. Jeremy could have just as easily ended up like Frost and Annie. This is why Jane had refused to become close to anyone. No one could be close to her or know her because they would only end up dead. A million thoughts ran through Jane's mind. How did Hoyt find them? They had been so careful. And she was sure Korsak was thinking he was hauling a couple outlaws.

Another hour passed and a voice suddenly cracked over the headset.

"Dad? Dad can you hear me?"

Jane and Maura perked up in their seats at the sound of Jeremy's voice on the headset.

"Oh, thank God. Yes, son," Korsak happily responded. "I'm here. Are you okay, Jeremy?"

Maura and Jane both took a collective sigh of relief.

"I'm fine. I heard the gunshots and saw those men shooting at the plane. After you guys got away they headed towards the main building. I hid in the shed and called the police on my cell. I think the sirens scared them off. There's no sign of them here now."

"You did the right thing, son. I'm just so glad you're alright."

"Who were those men?"

"I'm not sure, Jeremy. I don't have all the answers yet, but they were after Jane and Maura. Look, let's keep this line clear for now. Who knows who may be listening. Just lay low and I'll call you as soon as we land, alright?"

"Okay, Pop."

As they continued their journey another hour and a half passed. Jane looked over at Maura and noticed the blonde had drifted to sleep. Neither one of them had gotten much rest over the past twenty-four hours. The brunette did feel the exhaustion trying to take over her body but her mind would not stop.

"Jaaane." She heard that dark and haunting voice purr. She closed her eyes tightly, willing the voice of Hoyt to leave her mind. She hated how easily she had allowed that man under her skin and into the deep recesses of her brain. For years he was her life. He was the puppeteer and she was the puppet on strings, doing his bidding.

"Oh, Jaaaane."

There it was again. She opened her eyes and frowned. His voice was so vivid and… coming through the headset!

Jane glanced at Maura and saw the blonde stirring, opening her eyes. She had heard it too. As soon as the brunette realized this was not just in her mind, her blood ran cold and her body froze.

"Who is this?" Korsak demanded.

"I know you're there my sweet Jane." The familiar and creepy voice sounded again.

Maura reached over and touched Jane's hand, seeing the troubled expression on the brunette's face.

The older man was confused and attempted to engage with this stranger once more. "Listen, I don't know who the hell this is," Korsak spoke into the headset. "But this is a private line for air traffic control. Please cease all communication at this time."

"I'm so disappointed in you, Jane," Hoyt went on, ignoring Korsak's orders. "I don't know why you're making me do this but know this… I will get you… you and your sweet girlfriend." Jane and Maura's eyes met.

"Hello, Maura." He spoke with disdain in his voice. "You will pay dearly for taking my Jane away from me. I'm going to kill you slow…"

Korsak switched off the radio then, no longer allowing the Hoyt's torturous words to ring through their ears. "Jesus. Who the hell was that creep?"

Jane held tightly to Maura's hand and tried to control her breathing. Hoyt knew where they were. Hoyt would never stop.

"Does anyone want to fill me in?" Korsak asked. Jane and Maura exchanged glances and Korask seemed to pick up on their hesitance to speak. "Remember, only I can hear you Jane, you can speak. You can't be heard over the airwaves."

Jane let out a breath and shakily hit the headset button. "That was the man that's after us."

"You want to tell me why he's after you?"

"It's a long story."

"Well, we've got a long ways to go and when I take off from my runway I usually don't expect to be shot at. So spill."

Jane looked at Maura once more and the blonde gave her a nod of encouragement.

"I'm an assassin," Jane stated.

"Okay, now you're just pullin' my leg," Korsak chuckled. But when the two women behind him remained silent, the older man's smile faded. "You're serious?"

"It's true," Maura confirmed.

Jane went on to tell Korsak the entire story. How she was assigned to kill Maura. How she rebelled against Hoyt, forcing them to be on the run. She decided to leave out Hoyt being jealous that she and Maura had slept together. Korsak seemed to believe them and said he would do anything he could to help them.

Their plane had finally reached the small airport in Canada where they would be refueling. It was overcast and a small drizzle of rain had begun. Korsak brought the plane down into a smooth landing and soon they were slowly taxing on the runway. When they came to a stop, Korsak climbed out of the cockpit and opened the door.

"Okay, ladies. Time to refuel. Feel free to stretch your legs and we can even grab some food if you'd like."

"Sounds good," Jane said as she and Maura unfastened their belts.

Korsak climbed down the steps and left them alone in the small cabin. Jane caught Maura's gaze and the blonde became lost in those soft brown eyes. "How are you doing?"

The blonde gave a small smile. "I'm okay. How are you?"

Jane looked into Maura's genuinely kind eyes and sighed. "I've been better."

"Son of a bitch!" They heard Korsak shout from outside of the plane.

Both women hustled out of the plane and spotted the older man standing near the tail end of the aircraft. Both of his hands were on his head as though he were ready to tear out his hair.

"Korsak?" Jane cautiously asked.

"There's goddamn bullet holes all over Laurna!"

"Laurna?" Maura quizzically asked.

"My plane. That's what I call her," he grumbled. His eyes scanned over the plane once more and he shook his head. "Shit."

"I'll pay for the repairs, Korsak," Jane offered. "I'm sorry."

"Yeah, yeah. I know," the older man sighed. He understood the situation Jane and Maura were in but that did not mean he couldn't be mad about the damage. "At least they didn't hit the fuel tanks. I'm going to get this set up." The older man began to walk away from them when suddenly, POW!

A gunshot fired and Korsak hollered out in pain. He grabbed at his left arm and fell to his knees. Jane immediately acted, pulling Maura by the arm and pushing her back towards the plane.

"Hurry, get inside!" She yelled.

"But..." The blonde started as she was hurried into the plane. All the blonde wanted to do was rush to Korsak's aid, but Jane wouldn't allow it.

Maura's heart was pounding as she climbed back into the cabin and lowered herself to the floor in a squat. Jane was instantly in front of her, weapon already drawn. Her eyes were trained on the door, ready to shoot whoever came near it.

"Please! I didn't do anything!" They could hear Korsak holler outside.

Suddenly, five or six more gunshots were fired.

Silence.

Jane's heart sank to the pit of her stomach at the sound.

"Oh, my God Jane…" the blonde said in a hushed whisper, desperately clutching onto the back of Jane's flannel. "Korsak."

"Shh… just stay down."

"Maura!" A man's strong voice boomed from outside.

The blonde stopped breathing for a moment and her spine tingled at the sound of the voice. She knew that voice. When Maura finally found the strength to move, she placed a gentle hand on Jane's arm. "You can put the gun down, Jane," she calmly spoke.

"What?" Jane frowned. "What the hell are you talking about? Who is that?"

Maura met the brunette's confused eyes and let out a small chuckle of disbelief. "It's my father."

A/N: Well, there you have it. I hope you all liked it. Please feed my muse because it's been a rough month and a half for me. And it would just be nice to hear from you guys. Much love!
