Victory

The next morning I awake sweating and breathing heavily by a nighmare where Robert gets killed by Leanne.

I get up to check on Robert when the reality hits me: Robert is really dead. Leanne killed him at the feast.

Slowly I sit down on the ground and look numbly into nothing. Today is probably going to be the last day of the Games. They´re just three of us left: the boy from 6, the girl from 10 and me.

For the first time I really think that I can make it. I have to be careful but I have a chance. Unfornutately, I don´t know what the girl from 10 is good at but I know that the boy from 6 doesn´t stand a chance against me when I´m near enough. I´ll just have to surprise him.

The words Mags said to me come to my mind again:"Remember what you´re fighting for". I´m fighting for my family, for my friends and for District 4. I have to make it, I have to see my family again.

The problem is that I really don´t know where the other two are. They´re 4 islands left and I don´t know if they´re still on the main island like me or if they preferred to get away from it after the feast. But the final will probably take place here, the Gamemakers will make sure of that. That´s one advantage I have. Most of the traps Robert and I set are still intact and I know where they are while the others don´t.

I see the sun rising and decide it´s time to eat. As this is probably the last day I don´t hold back and eat until I´m full.

Then I decide I´ll pass the rest of the time by setting some more traps and as well make a net which I can throw over my enemies if they come near me.

When I´m done it´s almost noon and nothing has happened yet. That makes me nervous, just sitting here and waiting for the final is worse than just getting over with it.

It´s almost evening when I hear a noise and get up, alarmed, with my trident and the net in my hands. I see that the other islands begin to sink although 3 tributes are still alive. That´s it. That has to be the final.

I gulp and with net and trident make my way towards the Cornucopia where I hide in the bushes and hope to spot anyone. After some time of doing nothing I hear a scream and see the boy from six running followed by some mutations that look like nothing I´ve ever seen: they have the head of a lion and the body of a scorpion. "Fuck", I mutter when I see some of the mutations coming up behind me and start to run.

While doing so, I almost run into 6 who shoots an arrow at me. I can barely duck but thankfully 6 is now busy with fighting off the mutations again what I have to do as well. While keeping an eye on 6 I almost get stabbed by the sting of the scorpion but I can block it off with my trident. What are the Gamemakers playing at? Normally they want the tributes to kill each other in the final and not get killed by their mutations.

Then I see the girl from 10 coming, as well followed by mutts. She sees us and without hesitating she begins to attack 6 with a sword. The mutts lay off and slowly back down. Unfornutately there are still mutations attacking me, just great. Obvioulsy the Gamemakers don´t want me to get bored, I think sarcastically.

10 and 6 are fighting furiously but to me it´s clear that the girl is superior, 6 is good with arrow and bow but these are mostly long-distance weapons. And I´m right, not long and you can hear the cannon signalizing the death of 6.

Finally the mutts lay of me and my whole concentration now is on 10. She´s much older and as well taller than me. I´ll have to fight very hard to survive this.

"Well, seems like we´re the last two", she remarks.

"Yep", is the only reply she gets from me. I don´t want to get distracted and just focus on her. She´s standing in front of me with her sword while I´m holding my trident. I lose the net while running away from the mutts.

Then she attacks me suddenly with such a force that I have to take a few steps backwards while blocking her sword,. She uses my surprise and intends to stab me into my stomach but I can block again, but not fully and she manages to hurt my left arm. I hiss in pain and she smirks. It´s not looking good for me. She attacks and I´m defensive, if we´re going on like this I´ll probably end dead soon as she is obviuosly stronger than me and knows exactly how to swing her sword.

Think, Finnick, think. The traps. She doesn´t know about them.

After blocking one more attack from her, I turn around and start to run."If you want to kill me, you have to get me first", I shout and continue running.

When I get to one of my traps I jump over it. 10 doesn´t know about the trap, so she walks right into it and now she´s trapped in one of my nets.

"Please", she says after she gave up on trying to free herself and looks into my eyes, "you don´t have to do it"

I scoff at her. "You know, I have to. I´m sorry", I reply and then kill her with my trident.

"Ladies and Gentleman, I´m honoured to present you, the victor of the 65th annual Hunger Games, Finnick Odair!"

I did it, I won.

I should feel happy but I only feel numb.

Then I hear a loud noise and look up to see a hovercraft flying towards me. Before I can do anything a Peacekeeper takes a needle and stabs it into my arm.

Everything goes black.
