Chapter 7: Information usually has more to tell.
"Okay, that's enough Blondie, you are outdoing even me in the drinking area; which means it is time for bed." Damon said pushing away from the bar, Elena nodding and following his lead. As always.
Caroline rolled her eyes in reply and tipped the contents of her glass into her waiting mouth. Stefan sighed and turned in his stool to face the moody vampire, a small smile licking his lips when Caroline tried to glare at him but only managed to grimace when the alcohol hit her stomach.
"Wanna go look at all the shops tomorrow Care?" He said innocently. Caroline frowned, unable to see what this had to do with anything right now.
"Sure," she said carefully her eyebrows still pinched together.
"Then let's go back and get some sleep, or you are going alone and no one will be there to compliment how good you look." He said grinning at her pout.
Really, Caroline wasn't bothered about going shopping, or having people compliment her. All that was on her mind was figuring out who that woman witch was and why Marcel wanted her so bad. But she couldn't tell her friends that, she had to act like the usual peppy girl she once was.
"Fine! But I want ten new pairs of shoes," she gave him a warning look before giving Anne a farewell wave and finally got up from her stool.
"Do you think Klaus will mind if we go back without someone with us?" Elena said as the four Vampires left the rowdy bar.
Outside in the night air Caroline caught the scent of blood coming from the other night life places, her nose wrinkled in disgust as she thought of what could be happening in those places. To take her mind from the alluring scent her eyes wandered over the people littered on the streets. Again, it was a mix breed of supernaturals and humans. She wondered briefly how the humans could stand to live with the monsters that roamed about in this town, now that they knew what actually went bump in the night, how they allow them to drink from their veins without a fight.
It just didn't seem real. Like all of this was a sham, outside of this town the world hates anything with an unnatural life span, and yet right here people are going into a bar, getting drunk and letting Vampires feed from them quite willingly.
"Are you coming Caroline?" Elena said breaking Caroline from her thoughts with her gentle tone. Caroline smiled and nodded.
"Sorry, guess that Vodka is finally working. What were you saying?" She said walking in time with Elena as they made their way down the pavement.
"She was just worried Klaus might not like us entering his home without him there." Stefan explained slipping his hands into the front pockets of his jeans his head facing the night sky, his eyes flicking over the constellations.
Caroline laughed bitterly and shook her head.
"Who cares, technically; it's our home too." She said smirking slightly at the thought. Damon chuckled and nodded his head.
"Exactly, now can we move it along? This human pace makes me feel so old." With that he grabbed Elena's hand into this larger one and the two blurred away from view in seconds.
Stefan sighed and brought his head back down from the sky to look at Caroline who was staring at her feet as she walked.
"What's wrong?" He asked softly moving to take the place beside her that Elena had vacated.
"Nothing, I'm just...I hate not knowing everything. And that witch is bugging the hell out of me," she replied brining her eyes up to meet Stefan's own stormy brown ones.
"The witch? You mean the one Klaus saved?"
Caroline had went into a little more detail of the nights events when her inner rants began to spill out of her alcohol loosened tongue, so Stefan was pretty caught up on what had happened now.
"No! The witch I saved, Klaus simply kept look out." Caroline said holding her chin out, her shoulders squared.
Stefan laughed, that's the Caroline he knew. Proud and stubborn to the core.
"Then the witch you saved, what is it about her that annoys you?" His tone was much lighter than it had been before, Caroline done that to you. She made everything seem light.
Caroline opened her lips to explain, to try and tell him the thoughts that were muddled in her mind, but at the last minute she stopped herself. She was just being stupid, the witch was a witch. Klaus must need her for some sort of diabolical plan.
"It's nothing, just forget it. Let's hurry up and get back before Damon can Destroy Dracula's lair." She dashed off into the night before Stefan could ask anything more of her.
Stefan watched her run for a few seconds before deciding to just follow her, after all, whatever it was that was running through her hectic mind would eventually come to light. He just hoped that when it did Klaus wouldn't be around for the onslaught.
And if he was, Stefan hoped he had some popcorn for the show.
When Caroline arrived at the Mikaelson Manor, she allowed herself to slow down to human speed, deciding it would be better to walk into the dragons den rather than run head first.
"Care!" Stefan called from behind her as he too came to a crawl at her side.
Caroline smiled at her friend, trying to diffuse any of the tension she had left behind with him. He only smiled and shook his head in return, letting her know that it didn't matter.
"Well, there are no sounds of pain or suffering." Caroline commented as they walked up the stone steps that led to front door that had been left open slightly by Elena and Damon.
"I suppose that could mean one of two things," Stefan said closing the door firmly behind him as the entered the lavish home of their host and King. Caroline nodded and looked up the stairs, her ears straining to hear where the rest of their party was.
Her face scrunched up and Stefan laughed lightly.
"Ew, okay so they are upstairs, let's stay down here and try to dissolve those nasty sounds from my mind."
Stefan laughed again, but Caroline could see the underlying pain that still captivated his heart when he thought about his brother and the love of his life, her gaze softened and she hooked her arms through his.
"What do you say to raiding Klaus's stash of blood bags?" She said brining her blue eyes up to his height as she grinned wickedly.
Stefan sighed and allowed her to drag her through the lengthy hallway and towards the kitchen they had all drank in this morning. Just as they were about to enter the kitchen, the two Vampire friends heard the hushed one of male voices. Of course, Caroline knew who one of those voices were immediately, the other one only drew a blank.
She looked up at Stefan, silently asking him if they should continue.
"Just come in love, we won't bite. Much." Klaus's accented voice called from within the kitchen causing Stefan to grimace slightly. He really was hoping for a quiet drink and then bed.
Caroline, on the other hand, was eager to find out who the mystery person was and all but flashed into the kitchen: towing Stefan behind her.
Klaus and the unknown man were sitting at the table, a glass of blood each in their hands. Klaus smirked as he usually did, but the unknown man frowned and looked at Klaus expectantly.
Caroline looked the man over, he wasn't what she was expecting. He was in his late twenties, or at least that was the age he was frozen in the circle at, with long wavy brown hair that hit his shoulders. His face was defined, but nothing near the perfection that Klaus or even Stefan had, she couldn't deny his charm but there was nothing exceptionally special about him.
"We just came for a snack, Klaus. Caroline still isn't quite full," Stefan said now leading her to the island in the centre when it looked like she was only going to stare.
Klaus looked at Caroline quickly, assessing if she was still in the grey zone when it came to her hunger, he sighed and waved to the huge fridge standing in the corner his smirk turning into a small frown.
"Take however many you need," he simply said and Stefan left Caroline's side to do just that.
"Who's your friend?" Caroline said, rather bluntly, once she was sitting opposite Klaus and the unknown Vampire. Said Vampire looked at Caroline like she was insane, his eyes darting wearily to Klaus as he drank from his glass before answering her.
"This is Todd, he is going to be doing some work for me outside of the New Orleans limits." Klaus said carefully; a smirk tugging its way onto his lips.
The Vampire, Todd, looked even more confused by his reply but he refrained from saying anything for the time being. Stefan returned to the table with two blood bags, one of which he hands to Caroline who tore away the top corner and brought it to her mouth hungrily.
"It's nice to meet you Todd, I'm Stefan and this is Caroline." Stefan said ripping open his own blood bag, drinking it more slowly than his blond friend.
Todd nodded in recognition but his attention was focussed on the little girl Vampire currently glaring at the Original Hybrid without a care in the world.
"Why the long face, Caroline?" Klaus finally asked, breaking the short amount of silence that had been created after Stefan's introduction.
Caroline rolled her eyes and sat the, now empty, blood bag onto the table, her fingers lacing together to stop her from getting too many ideas about grabbing his eyeballs straight from his head.
"It can't be any longer than yours; surely." She said flashing her teeth in a fake smile that only increased the Original's own.
Stefan sighed and began tapping an unknown rhythm onto the table top his eyes roaming the kitchen, 'here we go again.' He thought tiredly leaning his elbow into the table and his head into his hand. He had might as well get comfy.
Todd was now gaping at the girl, in all the time he had been doing dealings with the mighty Hybrid, King of New Orleans, he had not once seen anyone stand up to him, to act so defiantly towards him and live. How did the little thing managed to keep her heart? Just who the hell was she?
Caroline was unaware of her spectators inner turmoil as she braced herself for whatever comment was about to leave Klaus's beautiful lips. She had almost missed their banter; almost.
"Well, love, it is looking pretty furlong right now. I wonder why?" Klaus said his eyebrows rising ever so slightly, baiting her like he knew he could. Of course, he knew why she was in such a mood, she was bubbling with curiosity. She wanted to know everything and anything, she simply hated not being in control of every single situation.
Caroline resisted the urge to stick her tongue out at him and decided to change the subject to one that she could control a little better.
"So what kind of work do you do outside of this wonderful place, Todd?" She asked the nervous Vampire smiling encouragingly at him when he only stared back at her stupidly. Stefan stopped with his tapping long enough to give Todd a sympathetic look, he knew what it was like to be on the other side of those big blue eyes and feel like you had to give up your soul for them.
Todd took an unneeded breath and looked at Klaus, wondering just how much this woman was allowed to know, but Klaus only smirked and shrugged.
He didn't care what he told her, he was sure whatever he did reveal would give him ample amusement in Caroline's reaction.
"Uhm, nothing too dangerous or anything. I'm just checking up on things. Making sure nothing too bad is going down." He explained with a shrug at the end. Caroline frowned and glanced at Stefan from the corner of her eye, he was now fully engaged in the conversation too. Just like her, he wondered why Klaus would want someone 'checking up on things.'
"And where are you headed?" She asked leaning a little over the table to try and get the strange man to talk.
Klaus narrowed his eyes slightly at her over friendly action, but the gesture went unnoticed by the blonde, however, Todd wasn't so lucky.
"Germany, apparently the humans are making some sort of weapon for Werewolf's over there." He said his eyes darting frantically to Klaus who had slipped on his usual cold mask.
"Actually, I had better be going. Thanks for the drink boss, I'll contact you when I can."
He flashed out of the room before Caroline could even open her mouth to respond.
"I think you scared him away love," Klaus teased draining the rest of his glass and pushing away from the table with a smirk.
Caroline snorted and copied his actions.
"Somehow I don't think it was me that scared him off." She muttered pushing away a strand of hair from her eyes when it fell away from the loop behind her ear.
Stefan laughed quietly and also stood from his seat.
"Before the two of you can get into any more arguments, I am going to bed. I'll see you both in the morning." He gave them a small wave and left them to their own devices.
Caroline frowned at Stefan's retreating back before turning around to face Klaus. He was already watching her; that closed off look masking his features as she tried to peer underneath it.
"What is it, love?" He said quietly, genuine concern littering his tone.
Caroline sighed and folded her arms across her chest.
"Sophie. What's the deal with her?" She finally asked irritation evident in her voice. Klaus grinned and began to make his way towards her, slowly, like one would do with their prey.
"She is a witch, and an adopted sister of one of my…'minions.' She is currently very important to some of my plans," he said answering her without giving her any crucial information.
Caroline frowned, the witch didn't seem powerful enough for Klaus to need her help. She didn't even defend herself when Marcel attacked her, no. Something else was going on.
He was now standing directly in front of her, his musky scent invading every part of Caroline's senses. She had to bite her tongue to stop herself from taking a big gulp of that delicious air.
"What plans?" She asked trying not to indulge in his perfect smell too much.
Klaus arched an eyebrow for her and carefully brushed past her left side, stopping and stooping only to whisper in her ear hauntingly:
"Careful love, some people might actually think you want to know more about me."
The familiar 'whooshing' noise alerted Caroline to the fact the Klaus was no longer by her side, but she was in too much of a stupor to really care.
His scent was stuck on her mind as she tried to fight through her haze back to reality. Damn him, she cursed pursing her lips, he knew just the right words to tick her off.
Looking over her shoulder to where Klaus had vanished, Caroline allowed herself a deep breath of the Klaus scented air before she made her legs walk towards her bedroom.
Oh well, if worse comes to worse; she could always listen to her best friend fuck her idea of annoying; to get Klaus's irresistible voice from her head.
