- - - The Church - - -

'Why?'

Subaru was uncomfortable with the irony of him being inside this kind of place. He hated being in here and yet here he was sitting impatiently on the bench.

He glanced at his side.

Kneeling beside him was Yui who seemed to be fervently praying to her god. She had been doing this ever since they got here inside the church. And Subaru has been unnaturally quiet.

'Is she done yet?' He asked himself, annoyed by the wait. But in the end, this was due to his fault.

Subaru was the one who brought her here. This wasn't what he originally intended when he went to visit her inside her room. He simply panicked when she cried ceaselessly. She looked desperate- too desperate like his mother. He needed to calm her down no matter what. He remembered that she looked at peace whenever she came back from the church, and so it goes that he brought her here.

He silently examined the interior of the church. It's been awhile since he last came here. He remembered raising havoc in this place. The main chandelier, the altar, the right side wall, the entrance door and a few benches were all broken because of his doing.

He laughed inwardly since the evidences were still there. His deed forced this church to close down for repairs, and that fact alone made him feel a little bit satisfied for being in here.

"Amen." Yui whispered in finality.

"At last!" Subaru grunted in relief.

"Ah, yes. Thank you for bringing me here."

"Tsk! This would be the last time you'd ever come here. I'd make this place crumble before we leave."

"Subaru-kun! I beg you not to."

"Hehe... Then what would you give me in return so I won't have to?"

Yui was alarmed by his statement but she stuttered an evasive answer. "I... I can clean your room for you."

"The butler can handle that."

"T-Then how about I tutor you in your Math subject?"

"I hate studying."

"But I heard you were flunking that sub-"

Subaru glared at her.

"A-Ano... I can cook your favorite food once we get back home."

"I don't need it cooked. I want it raw." He pulled her by the wrist, forcing her to sit closer to him. "Your blood tastes better this way."

"S-Subaru-kun, I really think you shouldn't!"

"Shut up. This church is fairly deserted as of the moment. No one would be near enough to hear your smutty voice." He bent her head to gain access to her neck.

"No! Please no. You could die!" she struggled, which in turn was able to stop Subaru from burying his fangs on her skin.

"What was that you said?" Subaru inquired, but then his phone started ringing before Yui could respond.

'BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!'

Subaru consequently trapped Yui in place with his arm around her waist, while his free hand reached for his phone.

"What is it?" he answered with his usual unwelcoming tone.

"Subaru, I must ask you..."

"Reiji-san!" Yui exclaimed upon hearing the person from the other line. "Reiji-san, please explain my situation to Subaru-kun before it's too late."

"Komori-san?" Reiji seemed alarmed for a moment, but eventually returned to his composure. "Ah... So you're with the human girl. Subaru, I'm saying this as a warning. Do NOT drink her blood."

"Ha? And why would I listen to you?" The younger one replied.

"Seriously."Reiji snickered. "It matters not whether you listen to me or not. As long as I have warned you, I am no longer responsible for your potential death."

"What do you mean?"

"Hm... I guess Ayato forgot to tell the rest of you. How bothersome."

"Hey, spit it out already."

"Tsk! Impatient as always."Reiji muttered. "There had been an unexpected nuissance last night. Someone broke inside my room when I went to check a book in the library. The fool went and cleanly interchanged the labels on the bottles inside one of the cabinets. I happened to use some of those bottles as an ingredient for the cure I gave that girl for her wound. To make it short, I might have given her something poisonous as a result of using the wrong ingredients. That is why I need everyone to prevent themselves from touching her while I discover what I actually gave her."

Subaru was silent after the explanation, irked with his hunger and the fact that it's probably his fault why he'd be starving for the highest quality of blood he had ever known.

"That aside... Have you noticed anyone lurking near my place last night? Your room is closest to mine. Surely you must have noticed the fool who trespassed inside my room."

Of course Subaru knew who it was. "A-Are you kidding me? I was mostly out in the garden tending to your roses last night. How should I know who went in and out of your room? Don't go on troubling others with your carelessness."

"Hm... Fair enough."

"A-Anyway... How sure are you on the things you've said earlier?"

"About the girl? Not entirely sure. I'm still on the verge of knowing,"

"Then I'll drink my fill."

"Suit yourself. Komori-san, do use this phone to call me when he starts wincing on the floor. That's all."

"Ah! Wait! Reiji-san, I-" Yui tried to stop him from ending the call, she had more to ask him about, but it was too late.

'BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!'

"Eh? He hung up?" Yui murmured in defeat.

"Tch! That shithead." Subaru cursed before he crumpled the phone with his hand and threw it against the stained glass window.

Shards went crashing on the floor, and made quite a noise as it did. And unluckily, it called someone else's attention.

"Who's there?!" a voice came echoing inside the vicinity.

Yui then quickly got free from Subaru's arm when he was distracted with the voice. But she did not run away, as Subaru stood from where he was seated.

The two then focused on the light that came from the door beside the altar, simply waiting until the owner of the voice came out from there.

"I said who's there?" an old man came to their sight.

"Oh, it's you!" Yui exclaimed as she went near the man.

Subaru hesitantly followed and stood beside her. It was strange but he did not like the aura surrounding this man.

"Yui-chan?" The man responded in surprise.

"Father, I'm so glad to see you again. It's been awhile." Yui smiled.

But Subaru frowned in confusion. "Father?"

"Oh, no. That's not it. He's not my father." Yui shook her head. "He's the priest who took my father's place when he went abroad. He's in charge of this parish church."

"I'm glad to see you're well, child." The priest gently placed a hand on top of Yui's head as if blessing her. "It probably is difficult living far away from your parent."

"It is. But I'm fine now." she smiled, faking her true situation. "By the way, have you perhaps heard news from my father?"

"Sadly, no. But I'll make sure to inform you if ever." the priest said. "By the way, what are you two doing here late at night?"

Yui suddenly blushed at the question while Subaru simply looked away.

"U-Uhm... We came here to pray." she said.

But Subaru glared at her.

"I... I mean... I came here to pray. He kept me company."

"Is that so? But the church is currently under repairs. It's dangerous to come here. The debris might fall any time."

"S-Sorry. We were about to leave."

"That's alright. Oh, are you on your way to the festival?"

"Festival?" Yui looked perplexed yet excited.

"Aren't you aware of it?" the priest asked, also in confusion.

"No..."

"That's strange. I thought the young ones are more informed about this matter. Very well... There's going to be a fireworks festival in town tonight. Stalls have been set up at the plaza to entertain the people while waiting for the fireworks show at midnight. Why don't you come and enjoy the festive night? I have a truck parked at the back of the church. I can give you two a ride there if you'd like." The priest slowly turned his back and went back to the door from which he came from.

And as soon as the priest was gone from their sight, Yui turned to Subaru and blurted. "U-Uhm... Do you want to go?"

"I don't want to." the other responded.

"B-But it might be fun. You'll see."

"Tch. There's nothing fun with a crowded place. Let's go home."

"Ah... Alright." Yui conceded. The church was in shambles because she had upset him before, so she decided not to go against him this time.

"Yui-chan!" the priest suddenly called from outside. "Could you help me for a moment?"

"Y-Yes! I'm coming!" Yui responded as she dashed out the church.

"I'm sorry. But could you help me lift these boxes on to the back of this truck?" the priest requested.

"Alright. I can do that." Yui complied, as she went and started with the large boxes. But while doing so, she asked. "Father? What are in these boxes?"

"Oh, that? They're donations from parishoners." the priest answered as he handled the smaller boxes. "A few volunteers had the idea of setting up a stall at the plaza tonight so we could sell these things at the festival. You see, the money from our sales would be used to assist the needy and repair the church. Who knew rebuilding a small old church could be so expensive?"

Yui suddenly felt a sharp pang on her chest. "A-Ano... About that... I'm really sorry."

"Hm? Why are you apologizing? It's not as if you were the one that destroyed the church. The authorities haven't found the ones who did that, but may God forgive them for what they've done."

Yui felt more guilty with the old man's words. She may not be the one who desecrated the church, but she was to blame for its destruction.

A few weeks ago, she run away from the mansion and hid herself in the church. Subaru eventually came and fetched her there, but she stubbornly refused to go back with him. And so it goes that Subaru had one of his violent mood swings and nearly demolished the architecture.

"Anyhow, my child, why are you the one carrying those large boxes? Isn't it heavy?" the priest noticed as she struggled to lift one of the larger boxes on to the back of the truck.

"No, I'm alright... Oof!... My body might be small... But I'm quite strong, you see? And besides, you're also too old to be carrying heavy stuff."

"Hahaha... That's true. But how about I ask your companion to help us? He's still inside, right? I'll go call for him." the old priest walked back towards the church.

"Father, I don't think that's a good idea. Let's not bother him anymore." Yui wanted to stop him from calling for Subaru. Who knows how he'd react? But sadly, she was stuck in place. Half of the box was still hanging at the edge of the truck. If she let it go now, it will fall back on the ground and possibly break its contents.

"Haha. You're too kind, Yui-chan. But it wouldn't hurt to ask for help when you need one."

"No, it's not that. Father, please wait!" Yui called out to the priest but he was already inside.

"Oh, no." Yui panicked as she tried pushing the box into a stable position. "Come on now... You can do this Yui... Just a little bit more..."

"What are you doing?"

Yui carefully looked at her side to see who just said that. "S-Subaru...kun..." She was relieved to figure out it was her companion but she could also feel her strength failing her. "A-Ano... I'm trying to lift this box on to the back of this truck... And those boxes beside you."

"That box is starting to fall right towards you." Subaru stated. "Wouldn't it be better to just let go?"

"I can't!"

"What? You're stuck?"

Yui nodded difficultly. "And other than that... If I let go now... the things inside this box might get broken... It's... It's for reconstructing the church... You see?"

"And why do you care?"

"W-Well... Oof!... I'm partly to blame for its... destruction so... I can do this much... at least." she smiled weakly as she found her arms slowly going numb because of the heavy weight of the box.

While Subaru found himself frowning at her answer. "That's stupid. Don't expect me to help you with that thing. Get yourself back to the manor even if you're injured." He then turned his back towards her and walked away.

Yui was horrified to see him leave, yet she had expected this much from him. 'Calm down, Yui. It's alright... Just push a little harder... You'll be alright.'

She concentrated her strength on to the box as if her life depended on it. Well... It kind of did since it's about to crush her.

She huffed one final breath before she made the final push and then...

"I did it!" She rejoiced, as she had successfully lifted the largest box on to the back of the truck. "The other boxes wouldn't be so hard after this one." she assured herself, massaging her sore arms and turning towards the other boxes she needed to carry.

"Huh?" But the other boxes seemed to have disappeared from where they were.

"Can we go home now?"

Yui heard Subaru's voice once again so she turned around and saw him standing by the truck. "S-Subaru-kun! T-The boxes... They were just here. But they're gone!"

"Tch, stop that whining, human. I placed them all on to this truck while you were busy handling that big one." he answered.

"Oh... I didn't notice." Yui almost forgot she was with a vampire. This sort of thing wasn't so difficult with Subaru, but she wondered. "But I thought you wouldn't help me?"

Subaru blushed. "I did no such thing! I was merely increasing the pace since you were doing things slowly. And besides, Reiji already knows I'm with you. He'd nag me of your whereabouts if I return alone."

Yui smiled at that. Although Subaru was the most violent among the brothers, she knew that he was the kindest. His harsh words usually doesn't mean what they seem to be.

Subaru suddenly had the urge to scratch the back of his head. He could feel himself getting hungrier by the second. Staying near Yui wasn't helping either. Right now, she's a poisonous bait. It wouldn't do him good to drink her blood even if he wanted to.

"Damn... I'm hungry." he whispered to himself.

But Yui heard him. "A-Ano... I know you can't drink my blood right now but we could go to the festival. There's a lot of good food you can eat there for sure."

Subaru found himself having second thoughts about not attending the festivity at the plaza. Indeed, it was crowded with humans. He could surely find a person that could quench his thirst temporarily.

Indeed it was a good opportunity for a hungry vampire having a withdrawal.

"We've been walking around long enough, so pick a guy already!" Ayato voiced out to Julia who was walking along side him.

"That's a barbaric way to put it. Of course I need to pick a good one. Plus, I need you to purify their blood before I drink it." Julia responded.

"Do I have to do that?"

"Ayato-sama! You kidnapped me so take full resposibility."

"Tch! I didn't think kidnapping someone would take so much effort. I'm thinking of returning you back to the castle. It seems that that person hasn't noticed your abduction yet. It's not too late."

"T-That's unfair. But you haven't done your side of the bargain yet."

"Ahahaha... That's true, Ayato-sama~ Don't impulsively kidnap ladies if you don't want any trouble." Laito teased.

"Shut up! Then you do it." Ayato retorted.

"As much as I'd like to, I can't. You're the best candidate for that right now."

"You're useless. Then, why'd you come along?"

"I just wanted to know how this Kidnapping Scenario would end up like. And also, I was hoping to take Julia-chan to a shopping spree."

"What?"

"Come on now, Ayato-kun. She's a lady. She needs clothes."

"She's fine. I could just steal some of that girl's clothes for her. I just did it awhile ago. I can do it again if I have to."

"Don't you think that's a bad idea? You can only do that once. Bitch-chan would notice and would probably report the matter to Reiji. If he discovers what you've done, he'd quickly contact that person."

Ayato did not reply but accepted his brother's point.

"Anyway..." Laito continued. "Julia-chan~ would you like to play dress-up with me? Let's roam around town and buy nice clothes for you."

"Really? Let's go!" Julia responded happily. Like any other girl, vampire or no, she definitely likes clothes.

"Ahaha... I'm glad to hear that." Laito said, stroking a few strands of the Julia's hair. "We could also spend some alone time in the fitting room while we're at it. I'll make it more fun for the both of us."

"Oi! Oi! Don't touch her. She's Yours Truly's hostage. Go find your own." Ayato warned.

"Relax. Don't be too greedy. You already have Bitch-chan to play around with."

"Who's Bitch-chan?" Julia asked, noticing that Laito had repeated the name a few times already.

"No one. I thought we're supposed to be enjoying the food tonight?" Ayato quickly changed the topic.

"We are. So why don't you go find a nice human for Julia-chan, while I take her shopping. It would make things go faster for all of us. Isn't that right?" Laito turned to Julia.

Who then agreed with him. "I think I'd prefer that arrangement. I think you have better fashion sense than Ayato-sama."

"Hey. Remember that you're the abductee. You don't have any say in this. Don't defy Yours Truly." Ayato shot back at her.

"Ayato-kun~ You're too selfish for your own good." Laito commented.

"Shut up. I'm her kidnapper so I can do anything I want with her. And I need her to do something for me, so can you leave us already?"

Laito sighed in defeat. It's tiring to reason with his younger brother. "In that case, Julia-chan, can you raise both arms for me?"

"Oh, ok." Julia did what she was told, though she didn't know why she was asked to. "Kyaa!"

Laito embraced her out of the blue. "Aaahhh~ it's been a long time since I touched you. You're body still feels as soft."

"Ahahahaha! S-Stop that. Haha. You're tickling me!" Julia laughed, as she felt Laito's hands travelling around her waist.

"Alright. That's that." Laito finally released her and adjusted his hat. "I think I'll be roaming around town solo. Enjoy the night while you're here. And don't get caught. Adieu~." he turned his back and disappeared among the crowd of people.

"So..." Julia broke the silence after Laito's leave. "What did you want me to do for you?"

Ayato, though he was the one who said it, twitched at her question. "U-Uh... I just need you to be a girl for tonight."

"What do you mean by that? I am a girl!"

"J-Just come along with me. We might just find you a nice human while we're at it."
