Night 13
"To Wash Away The Sin"
- - - oooOOOooo - - -
It was funny how the other areas of this town seemed hauntingly deserted when all the townspeople have all gathered at the plaza. The streets were empty and the buildings seemed abandoned.
More importantly, it was quiet enough to hear only the sob of a supposedly dying girl.
Subaru had dragged Yui away from all the liveliness at the plaza, and brought her far enough to a place where they wouldn't be disturbed... in front of a building where the streetlights could hardly reach.
Yui curled down and cried to her content as Subaru stood beside her, leaning quietly against the wall.
Tonight did not turn out good for Subaru. His vengeance against Reiji had quickly backfired at him in the most unexpected way.
Indeed, he found Yui as a nuisance the first few months of her stay at the manor, but he never planned on killing her. Yes, he'd burst at her and threaten to kill her, but all he could do in the end is to simply hurt her physically or verbally. The real intent of taking away her life never existed.
But now that he had endangered her life, he felt uneasy.
Honestly, he found her innocence but clumsy naivety amusing and refreshing to the point where it was almost precious to him. She'd always treat him warmly. Him who was born out of sin and him who ends up destroying those he cherishes was receiving such kindness from this girl. But now, even she was suffering because of him.
Yes, it was his fault and he knows this enough to make him feel disgusted with himself.
He raised his fingers to his lips, making a sharp whistle when he did.
No longer than later, a screeching sound came flying from the sky and hovered in front of his face.
Subaru carefully patted the bat's tiny head and muttered a soft command before it flew off.
His eyes followed its figure as it disappeared into the brightness of the coming full moon.
'...please kill him...'
His mother's words softly whispered inside his head. It was a memory from a long time ago. But it lasted clearly as if it only happened yesterday. His fragile mother, Christa, handed him a silver knife, crying and pleading, desperately reaching out.
'Please kill him...
'Stab this through his heart...
'Don't let him come near me anymore...
'Free me...
'Please kill him...
'Kill him...
'Do it for me...
'Subaru-kun, you're a gentle child. You'd kill him for me...
'For my sake, won't you?'
Subaru carefully unhitched a leather sheath on his belt and pulled out a silver knife. He had always wondered who exactly was his mother referring to. Who was it that she wanted to kill? For the longest time he'd believed it was his father, but secretly, he doubted. His mother might have in truth wanted to kill the child born out from a sad tale.
His mere existence was making her hysteric. He was the clear evidence of her rape. Perhaps she had wanted to erase the memory of that night but whenever she sees him, it keeps coming back to her again and again.
'I know it already. If I die, you'd finally forgive me, wouldn't you, mother? Even this girl, she'd be able to forgive me a little bit.'
He sat down beside her, still maintaining his back against the wall. For awhile, he tilted his head towards her, watching her as she gave in to the tears she'd been holding in.
"Don't you think that's enough?" He said.
Yui did not respond, but Subaru took her hand and gave her the knife. With this, Yui felt the familiar cold metal of its handle so she lifted her head to look at it.
"What's... why... why are you... giving this to me?" She struggled to ask in between sobs.
"That person who did this to you. Find him. And then kill him with this knife."
"W... What?" Yui wiped her tears.
"The one who messed up Reiji's potion. He's the one to blame. Go kill him. Stab him through the heart. That would instantly kill anyone."
Yui paused to look at the knife in her hand again.
"Why?" She later asked.
Her naive response almost made Subaru smile. "Don't be stupid. It's right to take a life for a life. He probably needs to anyway so..."
"I don't want to."
"Well, wouldn't you feel better if that person died first before you?"
"It would. Probably." Yui lowered her head, cradling her chin above her knees. "But because I'm me. I would probably spend living the rest of my life in guilt. Because I started hating, I might cause another person's grief. If I carry out revenge, it continues to spread hatred among people. Unless I start forgiving, this cycle would not end so..."
"Forgive?" Subaru snickered at the word. "Who do you think you are? A blessed virgin? Don't kid me."
"I'm not." Yui sniffled a tear as she tried to give him a cheerful smile. "I just think it's wasteful. My life's been cut short as we know it. I'd probably die even before I find out everything. I'd simply spend the rest of my life happily, wouldn't you agree?"
Subaru had known that Yui always had a positive outlook in life. But even so, it irritated him.
"Tch. I can't believe this." He grunted as he stood. "Then just die, stupid woman. How can you think like that? You're making me mad!"
"U...Uhm..."
"Are you done crying now?"
"I... I guess so."
"Then go home by yourself, idiot!" Subaru lashed at her. "I've called for the limo to fetch you so stay here."
"W... Wait, are you leaving?"
"I want to get away from your stupidity. Don't worry about the demons awhile ago, no one's following you around anymore."
"B... But..."
"You can eat the rest of the takoyaki. I've lost my appetite anyway so don't waste them."
Yui blinked just once and there he vanished in front of her, leaving her no chance of stopping him whatsoever.

"Ah... I'm so hungry." Julia groaned as she sat on a bench away from the busy crowd.
She was alone.
Ayato had left as of the moment, as he searched for a male victim for Julia's feeding.
"Julia-chan~" Laito appeared from not afar carrying a few shopping bags in each hand. "I got some nice clothes for you. Let's try them on in my room as soon as we get back in the manor."
Julia's face brightened at what she heard. "Oh, wow. You really know what girls' like, unlike Ayato-sama. Thank you so much!"
"Speaking of Ayato, where is he?"
"He left." Julia answered. "He's still looking for a suitable guy for me. Although I doubt he'd find one with blood that reaches my standards. Male vampires prefer the scent of a female human's blood. He might look for a guy who has a scent near similar as that of a human girl."
"As long as it's a guy, it doesn't matter, right?"
"It does actually matter. A human girl's blood could scarcely give nutrients to sustain a female vampire's undead body. Moreover, it tastes awful. So if he finds a guy who has blood that smells like that of a girl's then it would definitely not taste good."
"Haha. But not for me." Laito laughed, as he sat down beside her. "Yes, I see your point. I detest the scent of a male human's blood, but it's the opposite for you females. It's sad that we're both vampires but we could not enjoy the same type of blood. I could have let you feed on Bitch-chan's blood. It's the best I've tried for years."
"Bitch-chan?" Julia repeated, hearing the name again. "She's a human girl?"
Laito smiled.
"Oi." Ayato returned with a scowl on his face. "Didn't I tell you to get lost already? What do you want now?"
"Aww~ Ayato-kun, that's pretty harsh." His brother frowned. "But hey, you look awful. Did you succeed?"
"Of course. You're talking to Yours Truly. Now move it." Ayato pushed his older brother out of the bench and lied himself down, treating Julia's lap as a pillow for comfort.
"Hahaha. I didn't think you'd actually do it. I commend you for that. How was it drinking a male victim's blood?"
"Tch. Don't remind me. I feel bad as it is. His blood tasted like soil. Why do you even like drinking that?" Ayato referred the question to Julia.
"Well... you know our kind does have different taste buds. If you were a female, then what you drank just now would have tasted like honey." Julia responded.
"That's absurd. I want to vomit it all out."
"But you must not. You must let the blood settle within your body first. I need it to be absorbed in your bloodstream, make sure to filter it before I could drink it out from you."
Ayato groaned as he rubbed a palm on his face. His stomach felt uncomfortable.
"You'd better be grateful with this." he said. "Laito, can you call for the limousine? I'd like to go home, and lie inside my iron maiden."
"Sure, but I think that's a stupid idea." Laito responded, earning him a glare from the younger Sakamaki. "Oh my... Don't give me that look. Seriously, you suck at being the kidnapper, Ayato-kun."
"What did you say, you... Uuurrrp!" Ayato nearly vomited as he sat himself up to make a retort. "Gah! I feel sick."
"You're stomach is very sensitive right now. You shouldn't move around." Julia patted his back to comfort him.
Laito simply sighed at the sight. "You look disgracefully pitiful."
"Shut up!" Ayato burst.
"Very well, I guess I must tell you that the new driver reports directly to Reiji since he was the one who hired him. He's been obliged to report incidents that require the use of the limousine, the passengers who was in it, and anything that happens inside it."
"So what? He doesn't know Julia's face. The only thing that he could report to Reiji is that I brought home some random girl with the use of the limousine. Reiji would not discover anything. And as far as I know, that demon servant can't even speak."
"Well, that demon servant can transfer his memories to another in order to communicate. Wouldn't that worry you a bit?"
"Tch." Ayato could only grit his teeth. "How the hell did you know that he could do that?"
"I incidentally was informed with it that time when Reiji caught on about my rendezvous with a few women inside the limousine. He ended up telling me since he didn't like the thought of sitting on the leather seat where I might have cummed in the middle of a hot sex."
"The fuck?! Even I would be disgusted. Do your thing inside your room!"
"Him~? I can, but I wouldn't be responsible when you hear someone moaning in the middle of the night. But you can just barge over and join the fun since your room is beside mine."
"Go get lost and die somewhere already!" Ayato shouted in repulsion.
"Uhm... I think we should all calm down right now." Julia intervened, as he forced Ayato back to the bench in his lying position. "He has a point, Ayato-sama. We should get you home but we can't use the limousine for that."
"Then what do you propose we do?"
"I don't know. Maybe use our abilities? We could teleport. And besides, we were able to do that earlier."
Indeed, Julia was correct. Since Ayato could not use his powers, Laito had teleported the three of them to the plaza earlier that night to avoid detection and sneaking around the manor.
"Fine!" Ayato conceded. "Laito, hurry and teleport us back to the manor."
"I could do that, but I remember you told me to get lost somewhere. And so, that's what I'm going to do." Laito then dropped the shopping bags on Ayato's abdomen, bringing more distress to the latter. "Please take these also. It's for Julia-chan. I took the liberty to go shop clothes for her."
"Useless shit!" Ayato retorted as he contorted in discomfort.
"Aw~ You hurt me, Ayato-kun. And here I thought I'd been helping you more than I should have. Alright, this useless shit would be taking his leave now." Laito waved a hand goodbye as he walked off for the second time tonight. "Take care and make sure to hide Julia-chan so no one else would discover her."
Ayato would have yanked him back and forced him to do what he wanted him to do. But right now, he was in no state to win a fight against his brother.
"I'll plead with him." Julia told him as she attempted to go after Laito.
"Don't!" Ayato halted her. "Let's avoid relying on that guy too much. I don't know why he's acting freely as an accomplice with kidnapping you but I'm sure he has a hidden agenda. I'll take you home myself. But I'd like to rest for a moment before we can go."
"But you can't use your powers right now. You've used up most of your energy to take me out of the castle and you haven't drank a female human's blood to replenish yourself since you have to feed me."
"I know that, and damn... this would be the last time I'd be taking in a man's blood. I'll look for another way to feed you."
Ayato then sat up and leaned on the backseat while Julia returned to sitting beside him.
"You shouldn't worry about feeding me again any time soon." Julia said. "I've trained myself to not rely on blood too much. I can go on living without blood for 3 whole years."
"Seriously?" Ayato looked surprised. "Then why are you hungry right now?"
"Ahahaha. I'm nearly at the end of the third year. It can't be helped. That night when you found me in that tower was supposedly my feeding night. The servants had left two liters of purified blood earlier before you barged in the tower. I forgot to drink it since I was so surprised to see you. I was also excited to leave so I forgot about being hungry."
"Tch. Now that I know about it, I feel annoyed."
"Were you surprised?"
"Not that much. Reiji could hold out longer. He'd prevent himself from relying too much with human blood. He says it hurts his pride when he drinks human blood. He'd usually take in some of his blood substitutes to keep himself strong. Are you doing the same?"
"Nope." Julia shook her head. "Vampires rely on blood to replenish their energy. But there are two other ways to rejuvenate our undead body."
"Then are you having a lot of sex then?"
"What?" Julia blushed at the question.
"If you're not depending on blood, you might be relying on sex. It's the second basic method to replenish energy. Laito does it most of time."
"No, no! I hibernate most of the time."
"Ah, you're doing what Shuu does."
"Hm?"
"He sleeps... a lot. Although I think his reason for doing it isn't the same as yours. But still, you're a vampire by birth, so why not indulge yourself in blood?"
"Well, that's how I prefer it to be. Vampires depend on three basic pleasures to survive and to keep using our powers. That's Blood, Sex, and Rest. I mostly depend on the third one and..." Julia suddenly paused as if realizing something.
"What is it?" Ayato asked, noticing her silence.
"I can do it. I can use my powers to get us back to the manor. I still have stored energy in my body. Hurry, Ayato-sama! Let's go a little farther away from here. We can't let the humans see us. I'll take these bags with me. Just follow after me. You can do that much, right?"
"Y... Yeah."
"That's good. Then come on." Julia quickly nabbed the bags and ran off.
Ayato followed after her, but he can't help but feel that something's going to be wrong.
Julia immediately intertwined her hands with his the moment he stood in front of her. "Are you ready? Hold on to me tightly."
"Wait, don't tell me you're..."
"Trust me." She cut him off, as they disappeared quietly into nothing.
