Woo! Two chapters in one day. That's a rare occurrence for a single story. Hope you all enjoy since I've been blank for so long. If you find mistakes or want something clarified, you know where to find me.
Bespelled
Kagura watched as a medical lacrima sucked the blood from her vein up through a tube. She'd been the third in line after Bickslow had shown up. For some reason, girls who'd been reluctant to watch Isaac drinking blood straight from Urian's wrist were all excited about donating for King Isaac. Likely, there was the little factor of Isaac's demonic possession driving them to donate.
She could see it in their eyes, and she could wholeheartedly agree with it. She never wanted to see Isaac like that again. Not only had she been concerned for him, but she'd been horrified at what would happen if those threads holding him to the bed snapped. Thanks to Araña's love of creepy movies, Kagura had seen vampires suck human bodies dry.
When Millianna had mentioned that to Urian, the God Slayer had laughed. "There's a reason those are called movies. The human body prefers eight glasses of water to thrive. Isaac swaps four of those out for blood. Any more than that, and he'll get sick. He's still human. You know."
No. No, they didn't know. All of this was horribly confusing, and apparently, they'd been harboring a vampire without even knowing it. How come he could enter places without being invited? Or, had they always invited him, but they hadn't noticed?
He had a reflection, too. Was that just a part of the myth? Also, Beth had garlic in the soup. Isaac acted like he loved garlic. What about crosses?
"Ha! Crosses and garlic?" Urian burst out when Araña and Beth asked the questions buzzing in Kagura's mind. "How much TV do you chicks watch?"
A nervous glance was shared between every girl but Kagura. Movie night was a very important part of being a member of Mermaid Heel. Even Sirenia took part.
Shaking his head, Urian explained, "No. I wish it was that easy to control Isaac's beast, but it's not. How well-versed are you in the angelic pantheon?"
Kagura had no comment. She was amazed by just how smart Urian was. He wasn't portrayed as well-educated at all. He was supposed to be oozing of charisma and flirtatious charm. This smart Urian wasn't the prince she'd read about at all.
Even so, Kagura deadpanned, "Angels." She felt the needle that was drawing her blood be removed. It moved without being touched thanks to Bickslow's totems. A juice packet and cookie got handed to her by Beth, and Kagura settled in a new spot so Araña could get her blood drawn.
She pressed the straw of the packet to her lips as she tried to get her blood sugar back up.
"Yes, angels. The Lance family was long ago cursed thanks to our family being the founding Normans, normal humans, that settled in the kingdom. Our ancestors killed many men, women, and children that were natives in the land. Thanks to our royal rampage, the pagans, mages, had us cursed by Zeref—or so they believe. The legend goes that the family of Lance was to one day be cursed by three children: One of Impure Blood, a Prince Hidden in Lies, and a Demigoddess of Lione. When my mother cheated on my father the very night of her wedding, she wound up conceiving an illegitimate child. That child is the man unconscious in the room beside us right now." Kagura opened her mouth to say something, but Urian ignored her obvious intent. He continued, "Thanks to my mother's cunning, she had sex with my father on the same night and the nights thereafter. When she finally realized she was pregnant, she knew the child wasn't my father's. Something in her heart told her that the child wasn't a son of Lance. Thanks to her strategy, though, my father was convinced that Isaac was his when my brother was born. He got the birthright and the title since he was the firstborn son. That's what names him as the Child of Impure Blood. It's also what names me the Prince Hidden in Lies. My legitimacy and rights were stolen from me because of the lies of my mother."
"But, how does that connect with the angels and your relationship with Loki?" Kagura broke in, interrupting despite Urian's attempts to keep explaining.
Frowning, he mentioned, "I was just about to get to that. You see, people eventually started to put the pieces together. Isaac's father was a mage, and he often visited Isaac since he took care of my father's horses. People heard him calling Isaac his son, and rumors spread. People will believe any gossip about royalty, but in this case, it was truth. That was when the attempts on our lives started. Normans that were up on their history knew of the curse of the Lance family. We were named after a weapon, and they often said we were the lance that would rip the country in two. Back when Isaac and I were children with no knowledge of these prophecies and histories, we lived and moved from various castles. Our father tried to keep us safe from danger. He and our mother were up in age and having more children would have been likely impossible for them. They wanted to make sure their precious heirs were safe in order to keep the Lance name untarnished. There were only four true people left in the royal Lance bloodline. Those people were me, Adamine's father, my father, and they considered Isaac a member of that bloodline as well. They weren't ready to give up their name to the other royal families quite yet. But, there were some Normans that were ready to see the shift. Gatlin Thorne and his father were some of those Normans. They had their assassins set fire to the castle one winter's day when I was out with my uncle. Isaac and my parents were trapped inside of the inferno with the rest of the servants. When I saw the flames as my carriage wheeled towards the house, I ran off to try and save Isaac. I didn't get there in time. Right when the door grew loose enough for me to move it, one of the overhead beams flew my way. I was sure that I was going to die alongside my brother in that fire, but for some reason Loki showed up. The ice giant froze the entire castle and held the beam that was to crush me with one arm. While I was getting saved by Loki, Isaac was getting rescued by angels, two of them. They called themselves sisters and took Isaac away. It wasn't until years later that I met back up with Isaac again. I'd thought that he'd escaped when Loki froze the flames, but it was the angels that had saved him."
"But, isn't getting saved by angels a good thing?" Araña asked.
With a shake of his head, Urian disagreed, "Not if they're fallen. The angels that saved my brother are more so demons than anything Zeref has ever created. Thanks to whatever had cursed my family, different pantheons took interests in us. They use us as catalysts for Armageddon. The Aesir chose me. Angels chose Isaac. Fiorla picked Adamine."
"But, why pick you three and not anyone else?"
"I would assume because of what we worship," Urian sighed. He'd asked himself that question over and over again after Loki had welded the twin arm bands on his biceps. The god had explained nothing, but Urian had speculated. "Adamine's father was accused of worshipping pagan gods and selling his soul to them in order to win the battle against the Last Great Rebellion. It's rumored that Firmalione visited him on the battlefield. The Goddess of War and Stone is supposed to wander battlefields and seek out warriors fit to defend her people in the Next Life. As a matter of fact, there's rumor that Adamine isn't a legitimate heir to the throne either. People suspect that she was hatched from a dragon egg. As for my brother and I, our father was a Christian and our mother worshipped the Old Norse Gods of High Lance. She wasn't supposed to. In her vows she promised to change her faith, but she didn't. It's likely the sins of our parents that landed us as the gods' playthings. Probably something about that whole 'Offer me your firstborn' kind of stuff."
The sound of bodies shifting caught Urian's ears. When Kagura changed seats for Beth to be able to reach the IV, she stated, "I already contacted Adamine about Isaac's amnesia. She's sending Winry and Catori from Kindred Spirit to deactivate this Familiar Amnesia spell. Do you have any idea how Isaac could have gotten bespelled?"
"If what had attacked his ship had truly been angelic like Lisanna suggested, then it could have been one of his two mothers that cursed him. From what little Isaac's told me about them, one angel sought redemption to reenter Heaven. The other wanted revenge. It was when the revenge seeker implanted the Beast inside of Isaac that the other one ran off and delivered Isaac back to the kingdom."
"And, the blood drinking?"
"That's a part of the Beast's Curse. 'One to Sate and another to Awaken' is the phrase most often repeated in Isaac's prophecy. When Isaac jumped me for my blood the first time we met back up with each other, it made sense. Human blood sates the beast, but another will wake it up. I have no clue what kind of blood that is though."
Well, wasn't that just wonderful. Isaac was being attacked by a possible angelic being, and no one knew how to defend against it. Kagura had fought many things before in her life. During the Grand Magic Games, she'd become an enemy of dragons. During the rebellion to overthrown the Norman ruled government of Lancet, she'd forced a dragon to the ground. While she was accustomed to fighting overgrown lizards, she had no clue how to battle it out with angels.
When Isaac's body shifted in sleep, he faced the living room they were sitting in. He looked so perfectly peaceful and boyish. No one could look at him and think that he had a Beast living inside of him. Besides, he only acted strange when he was short on… blood.
Kagura could take care of him. She'd sworn to do it. Even if it meant that she'd have to give him her own, she would take care of him.
"What should we look out for?" Kagura asked the God Slayer.
Like Kagura, Urian was looking at his brother. His eyes were determined. He looked like he would battle anything or anyone if it tried to get between him and his brother.
When Kagura had been a little girl, Simon had looked at her like that. She understood the desire to fend for a sibling, to love and care for a sibling. Seeing the obvious love the brothers shared for each other just made Kagura want to take even closer care for the man resting in the bedroom.
A hand swept through Urian's ebony locks, and he turned towards Kagura. She was surprised when he let both hands drop, slide down from the knees, and stand up in front of her. With a sigh he explained, "I don't have a clue to be honest. Isaac's the only one who would know, and he's an amnesiac right now. Our only hope is that Catori and Winry can undo the spell one of his mother's put on him."
From his spot leaned back on one of the couches, Bickslow mentioned, "I'm sure my sisters can fix this. They took the spell off of me and Adamine when we went back to Lancet after twelve years."
"So, they really are your sisters?" Millianna piped up. Like Bickslow, Millianna had come to Fiore without a last name. When children had been snuck out of the country to escape being sold into slavery, the spell Familiar Amnesia had been put on them. The spell caused their memories to be suppressed. Locating information such as surnames had been forgotten. Unless someone Millianna knew mentioned her last name, she would never remember. But, that didn't mean she was from Lancet. She could have been from other countries. The spell Familiar Amnesia wasn't Lancet specific. A lot of refugees were bespelled with it to keep from endangering anyone they knew or had known.
"Apparently," Bickslow snickered. "Same hair color. Same parents. The only difference is that they never got sent overseas. They were rescued by a different group when our ship out of the country got cannon blasted." His totems cried out various words like, "Cannon blasted" and "Rescued."
A hopeful look crossed Millianna's face at the same time a roar of thunder shook the room. Once more, Kagura narrowed her eyes on Urian's armbands. Isaac may have become a blood drinker, but Urian had secrets, too. Whenever the thunder hit and the lightning struck, the lettering on his armlets glowed. Hopefully, whatever prophecy he had wasn't going to awaken as well. Kagura might need his help defending Isaac if Winry and Catori couldn't cancel Isaac's amnesiac spell.
"If that's all, I've got to get going. Lisanna and Mirajane said they had plans for me tomorrow, and I don't trust those lightning strikes," Urian explained. He offered out a hand to Kagura, and she used it to stand. He never let go of her hand as he stated, "Take care of my brother. I don't know how close I'll be when one of his mothers comes to break open the gates of Hel."
With an inclination of her head, Kagura mentioned, "I'll do whatever is in my power to keep Isaac safe."
"Good," Bickslow yawned out. "Now, if we're all done with this emotional crap, I've got a phone sex session planned with a certain lady friend. She's gonna get pissed if I leave her hanging." His long hand reached out to grab Urian by the collar of his vest, and Bickslow's five totems pushed Urian's back.
While Bickslow's words may have been crude, Urian taunted, "Please, Elfman and I are going to have to deal with listening to you and Adamine baby talking over the lacrima. 'Aw, Bix Bix, I miss you so much.' 'Me, too, Mina. I'm so bored without my best baby around.'"
The skin around Bickslow's collar turned just the lightest hint of pink before Bickslow's totems possessed Urian's shoes. The God Slayer was hanging upside down in his floating boots as Bickslow shoved hands into his pockets. "Inn. Now," the mage barked before skulking out of the room.
The girls could hear bits of their conversation as they walked down the hall.
"You're so whipped."
"And, you're so single."
"I bet you buy her lady care stuff, too. Don't you."
"Is it wrong that Mina and I are so comfy with each other that I can?"
"Whipped."
"Say one more thing, and I'll tell Mirajane how obsessed you are with her."
Silence.
"I hate you."
Arms were lifted into the air as Millianna sighed, "Well, I guess that means I'm out of luck with the God Slayer. Shame, too. He could Shapeshift into a kitty."
Araña laughed, "That was the only reason you were attracted to him. Wasn't it?" When Millianna just flashed a Cheshire grin, the woman's laughter grew louder.
The sound was enough to get Isaac's brows to furrow. Casting a scowl towards the loudmouths, Kagura rose from her spot on the couch.
Now that there was no immediate danger, everyone was settling down. Isaac seemed stable. When Bickslow had come in with the medical supplies he'd stolen, Urian had hooked him up to an IV. The king looked like a sick patient as he rested in his bed. The IV rested neatly in the bend of his elbow, so he should be safe enough to approach.
As Beth watched Risley, Millianna, and Araña argue over just who was going to have control over the TV remote, Kagura slipped inside of Isaac's bedroom. Just to check on him, of course! There was no other reason she wanted to see him.
Once she'd crossed the threshold from the living area and into his bedroom, she closed the door three quarters to act as a sound barrier from the cackling women. Her hip rose, and she settled herself onto the bed.
Isaac barely moved. His brows furrowed at the spatial intrusion, but he didn't crack open an eye.
When Kagura placed her hand down on his head though, he jerked slightly. He almost looked like he was waking until she started to run her fingers through the black velvet of his hair. The furrow of his brows gradually ceased while he petted him.
Just who was the man beneath her palm?
A Child of Impure Blood.
He and his brother were nothing like what Kagura had read about. Urian was more than just a playboy. He loved his brother, fed him his blood despite the beast coursing through his veins. He was smart and well-read.
According to Isaac's amnesia, he was more than just a workhorse. He was a cook and had a sense of boyish humor. He loved his citizens and spent time with them when he could. He was a good king, and his people called him the Great King Isaac. His citizens loved him. Had they known something had happened to their king, Kagura was positive they would be irate. Isaac had garnered the love of a suppressed people. He was leading them to a new world of acceptance despite the hate crimes and governmental corruption. Assassination attempts really weren't that much of a surprise.
Kagura knew who was in line for the throne in Lancet. Were Isaac to fall, Urian would take over. Then, Adamine who was the rightful heir. She'd given up her throne because of a simple statement. "A queen who doesn't want her title isn't fit to be queen." She'd tossed aside her royal lineage to date a commoner with no home of his own or a stable job.
A lot of people thought she was crazy. Others wrote poetry about her and her cousins. They thought that a period of Enlightenment was upon them, and they sought to create fame from writing about their royal leaders.
Adamine and Urian were writers themselves. If one was to look at the back of one of her graphic novels, they would see Adamine and Urian's pennames on the back. Adamine drew everything out. Urian wrote the story. Isaac got it published. Thanks to that, Adamine and Urian were published in Fiore and Lancet.
They had common hobbies that no one knew about. These royal people were just people, and they changed their names to keep their fame common instead of letting their titles make them.
Adamine's real name was Erianna Lancet. Isaac's real name was Isaac Grigori von Kaiser. He'd tossed aside his royal surname and went to the common name of his birth father, surprising an entire country with his humble father's name.
That was another reason people wanted Isaac dead. He was a common man sitting on a royal throne.
Sighing, Kagura could only imagine the stress that must put on his rule. People doubted him because of his blood not his qualifications. He was soldier because he'd commanded legions of mages to overthrown a country in peril. He deserved the throne more than the man who'd previously puppeteered the country.
Kagura was a mercenary taking care of a royal crown. Her job couldn't have gotten more important.
Amazing that the crown rested on the head of a common man with a beast sealed within his veins.
Running her hand through his hair, Kagura looked at Isaac. The lines of strain that had covered his face during his agony were now gone. His color had returned, changing him from sheet white to sun kissed. From between the part of his full lips, Kagura could see that his teeth had returned to normal. His fingertips had as well. The demon within was gone to reveal the boyish visage Kagura was become strangely addicted to.
Isaac was a hero, a man creating a legend. It was no wonder she found him so intruiging.
But, did she dare say she felt more?
He was an amnesiac. She didn't know the real Isaac. Just like how he feared having loved Hisui but not doing so due to his amnesia, Kagura feared that she wouldn't find him so interesting once he regained his memories.
She'd barely known him for much time. She shouldn't feel so attracted to him. He was handsome with his door buster shoulders and the muscles that made strong indentions in his back. The sight of his boyish expressions with such a masculine frame when she'd spotted him in nothing but a towel was chiseled into the bone of her skull.
Rolling her eyes at the stupidity of her own emotions, Kagura slid off the bed. She briefly checked Isaac's IV then made sure the blood bag he had was giving him blood at the recommended rate. Sure enough, everything matched the directions Urian had written down for him. After one short glance back to Isaac, Kagura let the door close on his bedroom.
"So, this is what Crocus looks like," a young woman with hair the same blue-purple color of Bickslow's breathed out. She had two hands on Princess Adamine's shoulders and was looking over the top of the princess's head as a carriage rode through the heart of the city.
Sitting beside Adamine, the identical match to the woman shook her head. "Catori, get off the princess's head. For crying out loud, you're using her head as a boob rest."
"But, my boobs are amazing, Win. They're deserving of a royal boob rest," Catori snickered back. Despite her words, she hopped off Adamine's back and flopped down to her seat in the back of the horse drawn carriage. She stretched out along it like she owned it. One booted foot reached out to lay in Winry's lap.
Winry merely sighed at her twin's blatant rudeness.
While they were identical in physical features, Winry and Catori couldn't have been any more different. Both sisters wore their hair on one side of their head. While Catori's consisted of extremely tight braids plastered flat against her skull before they fell loose over one shoulder, Winry's hair was more conventional. It was flipped over to one side where it fell in a tumble of elegant waves.
Like their hair, their clothing was similar but extremely different. Both of them dressed in the typical Lancet fashion, but where Winry wore a knee length dress in a similar style to that pirating age, Catori threw the dress out the window to wear skin tight leather breeches, pirate inspired boots with a fold over the top, and a shirt that used to be average length until she took a pair of scissors to it in order to make a crop top.
Right now, her pirate boots were unfolded and laid flush up to her knees. Winry couldn't help but ask, "Tori, why are your boots unfolded."
"Because Winry, with these shoes I can go from Captain of the High Seas to Captain of the Strip Tease in zero point six seconds," the other Seith Mage snickered.
"And, why are you in Captain of the Strip Tease mode?"
"Because, there's new meat to chew on since we're in Fiore, and if a certain Friedrich Justine is around, I can't wait to harass my new best friend."
"Please, don't hit on every pretty boy and cute girl you see. We're here to reactivate King Isaac's memories, not seduce half the country."
"Half the country!" Catori laughed, a big bold sound that got even their driver to crack a grin. "Please, Winry, expectations that low are the reason you're so shy. I'm going for all of Fiore, the Pergrande Kingdom, and every country east of Lancet. Be prepared to drop trou, Fiore! Pansexual pirates get all kinds of booty!" She cried out, quoting the very phrase on her tank top.
While politeness and healing were Winry's thing, rambunctiousness and flamboyancy were Catori's thing. She had a tank top for everything, and when someone mentioned a phrase she liked, she often got it put on a tank top.
Wishing for all the world that Catori's exclamation hadn't gotten every human within a ten mile radius to stare at the carriage going through the city, Winry tried to hide her face. Catori on the other hand took that opportunity to wave and blow kisses at their newfound crowd.
As Winry sank deeper in the carriage to avoid being seen by all the people staring, she asked, "So, Mina, do you know anything about Isaac's amnesia? If it's not Familiar Amnesia, I doubt that I can do anything to fix it."
Yes, though Catori was here, she'd just come to check out all of the "Hot Chicks" and "Sexy Dudes". She couldn't heal. Her Seith Magic was just as destructive as their brother's. Winry could control objects by implanting her whole soul within them, leaving her body as a useless husk to lay soulless under the protection of her twin. She could also crawl within the body of another person to carefully heal the soul and rewire any damages done. She was often called to medical facilities to help with depressed patients and those with neurotic problems. Catori was only here to guard the soulless body of her sister as Winry attempted to deactivate a spell placed by an angel.
The pressure was most definitely on, and to be honest, she didn't think that she had the juice to outdo the work of an angelic being.
Waving alongside Catori, Adamine stated, "Not a clue. I was with the Raijinshuu when Kagura called me. We had a three way with her and Mirajane."
"Three way?" Catori snickered, leaning over. "Gimme details."
"Not that kind of a three way, you perv!" Winry spazzed, trying to keep her face from turning a thousand shades of scarlet.
A black head shook, and Adamine's hellhound companion, Black Pearl adjusted in her seat. Like Winry, Pearl was dipped deeper into the carriage to keep from being hollered out by the people who recognized Adamine from Sorcerer Weekly and her picture on the back of her comics. "We have no clue. As usual, Adamine didn't ask any questions. She kidnapped me and ran for it. If it wasn't for me, Hollis and the rest of the Royal Guard would have no clue about Isaac's state. That's why this one is with us." The black fore claw of Pearl's forefinger pointed towards Colin Rydel, a spy for the Royal Guard.
"I would have rather someone other than me have come," the silver haired and silver eyed mage mentioned. He was sunk as low in the carriage as he could. A PlaySpell magazine hid all of his face but his luminescent eyes. True to his character, Colin had barely made a comment since joining them, and his magazine had stayed flush with his face. Though his reputation was that of a notorious pervert, he hadn't done a single thing untoward in the presence of his troupe of all females. Well, technically all females. Julian had enough homosexual inside of him to be considered at least half a woman.
Colin was here because he was a member of the Royal Guard. Julian was here because the guild pageant required at least three participants to partake. Thanks to Adamine and Black Pearl having been given three guild marks: Kindred Spirit, Royal Guard, and Fairy Tail. They, too, could enter legally.
So, they had four women and two men.
While it was over the minimum requirements, they were only here to make sure Isaac stayed safe. The life of the king was the most important thing even though Catori had hollered, "Spa retreat with any mage, and they can't ditch you. This chick says yes."
"So, there's an introduction party for all the contestants to take pics with Sorcerer Weekly. Right?" Julian asked, looking down from his spot on the carriage. He was up waving both arms in the air and blowing kisses at anything he found attractive.
Unlike Catori who threw it all out there, Julian was a classier kind of romantic. He was the type to buy you bouquets and write you poetry. He took you to dances to set up candle lit dinners. It was no surprise that he was easily winning favor with the onlookers of the suddenly most popular carriage in Crocus.
"Unfortunately," Black Pearl grumbled out. She, like Colin, hated publicity.
"Awesome!" Julian cheered out. "It's going to start at dinner time?" Head nod from those trying to remain hidden in the carriage. "Great! That gives me time to explore."
"Explore? I thought all of us were going to check up on Isaac!" Winry cried out, nervous at the prospect of possibly being alone in a new city.
Adamine stopped waving and sat down. "Sorry, Win, but Pearl and I can't do that. We're going to patrol the city for any suspicious characters. There has to be some way for us to tell an angel even in this busy city."
Colin nodded his head. He put down his magazine for the first time since leaving the kingdom. "I'll be patrolling as well. I already scheduled a meeting with the Garou Knights. Though they work in the lowest recesses of Mercurius, I'm going to see if we can't arrange for a communication network with their guards. Toma and Hisui already expect my presence."
A frown quickly crossed Winry's face when she looked at the expression on her twin's face. It was obvious what Catori wanted to do. She wanted to go to Fairy Tail and see their brother and his "cute friend". Catori's addiction to "pretty boys" was an annoying thing for Winry. It was obvious Freed was uninterested.
Catori could just feel the scowl she was getting and sighed, "I'm not going to leave you. Okay? Even I know you're useless without me."
"Thank you," Winry sighed. As soon as the carriage stopped in front of the Emerald Ivy, she watched nervously as her troupe left.
Black Pearl and Adamine ran off towards the Honeybone Inn where they would meet up with Urian. Julian paid the driver then plucked a rose up from a nearby bush. His eyes grew heavy lidded as he strolled gracefully away towards the heart of the city. As for Colin, his entire body phased out into mist. It was just Winry and Catori in a mere matter of seconds.
"Don't worry, Win. You'll be able to break this spell." Catori twined her fingers with her sister's. "I've got faith in you."
