Chapter 12
"Something smells good." Mario said as he walked down
the stairs to the kitchen.
"It's eggs, bacon, and pancakes... y-your favorite..." Luigi said
while looking down at the floor, spatula in hand.
"Thanks bro!" Mario said with a smile while sitting down.
"You're in a happy mood, even after yesterday?" Luigi said nervously.
"Sure!" Mario said cheerfully.
"Yesterday was Yesterday, it's time to focus on today.
Besides, the dance is tonight!"
"I thought you weren't exited." Luigi questioned.
"Well, something just... happened." Mario said while smiling to
himself.
"Anyway" Mario said while finishing the rest of his pancakes,
"I'm going to the school to help set up for the dance." he said while walking to
the door. "Thanks for the breakfast!"
"You're welcome!" Luigi said while waving to him.
"I wonder who Daisy's taking to the dance..." Luigi thought to himself.
"I hope she's ok..."
"Yes Mario, hang it there." Toadsworth said while pointing upward.
"No no... hang it there. No... there would be more festive."
Mario was helping Toadsworth with hanging up decorations in the 'Shroom
Gym. Since the gym was so large, Mario needed a long ladder just to reach the
tiny hooks on the ceiling.
"Yes Toadsworth..." Mario sighed while trying to hang the large banner.
"Don't make such a sour face...it'll...great...once...
..."
Mario wasn't paying attention to Toadsworth, as he was currently staring dreamily at
Toadette. She was setting up tables with Toad and her friends, all chattering
and among themselves.
"I say! Watch out!" Toadsworth shouted abruptly.
"Huh?" Mario said while staring at the tipping ladder.
Alarmed, Mario quickly reached for the dangling banner, only to be pulled
down along with the falling ladder. He let out a slight yelp, as he crashed to the ground
with a large thud.
Mario slightly moaned in pain as Toadsworth rushed over to him.
"I say, that was quite a fall." Toadsworth commented.
"Tell me about it." Mario groaned while rubbing his head.
"Mario! Are you ok?" Toadette asked while running toward him worriedly.
"I-I'm fine." Mario said while blushing slightly.
"I-It wasn't much of a fall anyway..." he said while getting up.
"Well, the sound of your voice doesn't agree with you." Toad said while walking up to them.
"I'm fine, really!" Mario reassured quickly.
"Toadette, would you mind escorting Mario to the nurse? To make sure?" Toadsworth asked.
"Yes, Toadsworth." Toadette said while smiling at Mario.
"C'mon!" she gestured to Mario while walking towards the exit.
"Alright..." Mario sighed while following her.
Toadsworth stared back at Toad, "I assume you can put this banner in its place,
without any distractions?" he asked.
"Uh... sure." Toad said slightly confused while grabbing the banner.
Meanwhile...
"How'd you even fall in the first place?" Toadette asked while staring at Mario.
"Well...I...thought I saw...a spider?" Mario mentally slapped himself.
Toadette cocked her eyebrow slightly. "A spider?"
"Yeah, one of the bigger ones." he quickly added.
"You've been through plenty of Ghost Houses, and you get
startled by a spider?" she questioned.
"Well, it has been a very long time and..." Mario started.
"Did the spider have pink, shiny hair?" she asked while smiling.
"I don't know what you're talking about..." Mario said while blushing madly.
Toadette playfully punched him on the arm. "I'm just teasing." she said while
giggling.
"Well, I already knew that." Mario said sheepishly with his hands in his pockets.
"Of course... once your face got as red as your cap." she whispered.
"What was that?" Mario asked.
"Nothing..." Toadette said with an innocent smile.
"Anyway, I'll wait out here while you get your pointless check-up" she said while standing outside the nurse's office.
"If it was so pointless, then why are we here?" Mario asked.
"Because... I wanted to spend a little time with you." Toadette said sweetly.
"R-really?" Mario asked stunned.
Then Toadette started laughing again, while Mario gave her an annoyed look.
"Well, go on." Toadette said in between giggles.
Mario walked in while grumbling things to himself.
A few minutes later...
"As usual, nothing wrong." Mario said while walking out.
"Well, to Toadsworth you're kind of... special." Toadette commented.
"If you got one little sprain he'd faint!"
Mario and Toadette both laughed for a short while.
"It is pretty empty here..." Mario said while looking around.
"What'd you expect? Everyone's preparing for the dance." Toadette pointed out.
"Do you think Toadsworth would still let me help out?"
"Probably not, he'd still think that fall is a gigantic deal?."
"That's a shame. I'd still like to work with you..."
"You're joking right?"
"Sure, why not?" Mario said while smiling to himself.
Then they finally arrived at the gym entrance.
"Anyway, after all of this do you... want to hang out or
something?" Toadette asked.
"We should at least relax before we need to get ready ourselves."
"Why are you asking me? Mario questioned.
"Don't you want to hang out with your other friends?"
"Well, they don't really see eye to eye with me unlike someone I know..." Toadette said while smiled.
"Does this someone wear a red cap?" Mario asked while smiling.
"No, he wears a blue one." Toadette said teasingly.
"What a shame, because red seems like such a finer color." Mario hinted.
"No, pink is much more finer than red." Toadette countered.
"Don't forget that pink is a shade of red." Mario countered back.
"Which means they kind of go together... don't they?" Toadette asked.
Silence.
"Yeah... they do." Mario said while staring into Toadette's eyes.
"Yeah..." Toadette agreed while staring into Mario's eyes.
Toadette closed her eyes and leaned in slightly for a kiss, Mario did the same...
Just as their lips grazed each other, "Hey!" a voice shouted interrupting them.
"A little help here!"
Mario and Toadette stared at each other and blushed.
"We should go help." Mario said quickly while walking in.
"Yeah... good idea." Toadette said while following him.
"Oooooh." some of Toadette's friends were gushing at her.
"Somebody's crushing on Mario." one of them said.
You're the one to talk Christine? You like him too!" another one commented.
"I do NOT! I there's someone who has a bigger crush, it's YOU Lindsey!" Christine shot back.
...
...
"I dare you to go talk to him." another girl named Sophie spoke.
"I dare you!" Christine glared at her.
"Fine! How long?"
"Two minutes."
"Really? That short?"
"I doubt you'd last a minute."
"Watch me."
Sophie spun on her heel and started walking over to where Mario
was assisting Toad.
"Is she really going to do it?" Toadette whispered to Christine.
"Nope" Christine simply replied with a confident smirk.
"Alright Sophie, just play it cool and cute..."
"Hey, boys!" Sophie smiled at both Mario and Toad.
"Hey Sophie, what's up?" Mario and Toad asked.
"Oh, you know...uh...stuff." she replied.
"Anyway, what are you guys doing?"
"I put up the banner, without any distractions" Toad answered while staring at Mario.
"Now we're waiting to install the Disco Ball when it arrives." Mario finished ignoring Toad's stare.
"Yeah...Great..." Sophie said while trying not to drool at Mario's presence.
She heard snickering and turned to see Christine and Lindsey giggling at her.
Sophie clenched her teeth in anger and mouthed "Stop it!"
She then ignored them when they continued and turned back to Mario and Toad.
"Anyway..." Sophie continued.
She sat down particularly close to where Mario was sitting on the bench.
"She seems to be doing well so far." Toadette commented to Christine.
"Yeah... a little too well..." Christine narrowed her eyes at the back of Sophie's head.
"What is she doing?"
Sophie scooted closer to Mario and ran a hand down his thigh, giving him a few
of her "special stares" while continuing to chat.
Every few moments they would laugh and smile at each other, much to Christine's
dismay. After enduring about 10 minutes on a good conversation with Mario, she finally
withdrew herself from the chat, planted a kiss on his cheek and winked at him while
she walked back to her group.
"I doubt you'd last a minute!" she mocked while smirking.
Christine looked away while letting out a "hmph" before walking away.
"C'mon Lindsey!"
Lindsey took one look at Sophie, glared at her in annoyance and followed.
"They'll get over it, at least before the dance." Toadette said while watching them walk out of the gym.
"They're just jealous, because I'm better with conversations" Sophie said while smiling.
"Well you weren't looking too good from the start..." Toadette said quietly.
"I heard that!" Sophie snapped.
"Well, it was kind of true..." Toadette said nervously.
Sophie sighed while slightly nodding her head.
"Anyway, who are you taking to the dance?" she asked.
"Toad" Toadette simply responded.
"Really? He asked you? He usually doesn't go to dances." Sophie said.
"Dylan's taking me, Ryan is taking Christine, and Jake is taking Lindsey."
"I heard they were pretty hot." Toadette said while sitting down.
"Yeah, but not as hot as Mr. Dreamboat over there." Sophie said while staring at Mario.
They both sighed dreamily as they watched him work with Toad on the Disco Ball which recently arrived.
Mario caught both of their glances and smiled at them.
They waved reluctantly and slightly blushed as they currently weren't working on anything.
"Girls!" Toadsworth said sternly.
"Sitting down and relaxing isn't helping with anything! So I suggest actually working unless
you two want to help clean up AFTER the dance." he finished.
"Yes Toadsworth..." they both groaned in unison.
Mario was hanging out with Toadette in her house since
her parents weren't home at the time. It was a slightly larger
house compared to the other Toad Houses.
"Is this your first dance?" Mario asked Toadette while sitting on the
living room couch.
"No, of course not." she replied.
"I meant first actual dance, not middle school dances,
dances where guys ask girls and stuff." Mario corrected.
"Yeah, but shouldn't this be you first one as well?" Toadette asked.
"It is, I just wanted to ask you because..."
"You wanted to start a bad conversation?" Toadette questioned.
"Congrats, you just did!
Mario rolled his eyes. "Sure, let's keep it like that."
"Anyway, do you want something the eat? Drink?" Toadette asked.
"Sure, do you have any water?"
"Water is so typical! Can't you ask for something else?"
"What's wrong with having water?"
"Nothing! But you don't want any juice or soda?"
"I didn't want to be demanding or anything."
"For wanting a drink?"
"Fine, get me a soda please." Mario asked.
Toadette laughed. "You're too polite!"
"Is there something wrong with politeness too?" Mario called out.
All he heard was laughter.
She soon returned with two cans of cool Orange Soda.
"Took you long enough." Mario remarked with a smile.
Toadette rolled her eyes and gave Mario his can.
Mario took a sip and said, "I never really had a friend like you..."
"At first I thought you were going to be very shy and less talkative."
"Now you're someone who I can hang out with, and not feel like I have
to act all casual or impress you in someway."
Toadette stared at Mario while still clutching the soda can in her hand.
"Is there something wrong?" Mario asked worried.
She looked away, "No, I just..."
She paused for a moment while staring at the floor.
"You should leave..." she finally answered.
"It's getting late, you should get ready for the dance."
"But it's only 5:46..." Mario said while getting up.
"Just leave, ok?" Toadette said while staring at him again.
"Ok...um, see you at the dance..." Mario said as he opened the front door.
Toadette didn't respond as he shut the door behind him.
