Some more fluff/character development before things get more serious :) Thanks for the reviews, they are very motivating.
"You like these?"
"hmmm. No not those."
Rin picked up yet another pair of frames, these ones were red and extremely boxy. He put them on doing several over the top poses.
"What about these?"
"No." His twin slightly grimaced.
Yukio had suddenly decided he wanted to go into town to the stores and Rin leapt at the request to accompany him. He never asked his brother to do such mundane yet fun things and it made the older happy. When asked why he wanted to go he responded that he wanted new glasses. The demon tried to hide his shock and excitement at such a confession for fear of making him go back on his decision. He didn't ask why he simply responded that he'd love to.
Rin also concluded that Yukio had an unnecessary surplus of glasses so it wasn't that he needed them. He wanted them obviously for style purposes. Yukio rarely expressed want for anything. Again the older tried to hide his bubbling excitement for Yukio expressing such a normal want. It warmed his chest.
"Nothing too flashy Niisan." He walked through the shop with his hands in the pocket of his jacket inspecting each pair.
"Alright alright. I was only kidding!"
"Sure you were."
The older noticed the playful sarcasm in his tone and smiled. He reached towards an oversized pair of purple ones but thought against it.
Something less flashy…
He continued to search but didn't see anything that screamed his brother right away, some too colorful, some too big, too wide, or too plain, almost identical to the ones stored in Yukio's store drawer.
Ahh this is so hard!
He narrowed his eyes in determination as he turned to study his twin, casually looking through the selection some more. Just then the older walked by another case he thought he had looked over before but apparently he had missed a pair. He called out to Yukio to come take a look at this one particular pair.
The exorcist approached him ready to chide him for joking around but was actually a little floored at the pair being addressed.
They were black, " Semi rimless Friz Quadrata," the older wrinkled his nose in confusion. They were very nice though, a thick frame at the top that was slightly pointed at the corners with no frame on the bottom half giving the appearance that they were hanging onto the top half of the frames. The last and smallest detail Rin noticed was the electric blue lining on the inside of the frames, not very noticeable unless you stood very close to the person wearing them.
Rin turned to observe the bewildered expression on his brother's face that brought a warm smile to his own face.
"I take it you like those then?" he smirked knowingly.
"See I know my little brother well, don't I?" He stood proudly and crossed his arms in triumph.
"Yeah after the other ten you picked up that I hated."
"Hey!" He opened his eyes to see that his brother was smiling warmly at him which he returned.
They called the associate over to purchase the frames and give them the information for his prescription and measurements, being told they should be ready in 4 days at most. They left the store in satisfaction as they made their way back to their dorm.
The weather was quite nice today so they had decided to the longer route back to enjoy the warm breeze.
"So when can you come back to teach and do exorcist stuff again?"
"I have about two days more of suspension."
"Aw that's stupid."
"It's alright."
There was another comfortable silence as they walked. The demon couldn't remember the last time they had shared a silence that wasn't filled with anger, or bitterness, or awkwardness. It was nice.
"So ah… Yukio… what made you want to get new glasses?"
He watched his twin's nose wrinkle a bit as he furrowed his brows as if he didn't know the answer himself.
"I just wanted a change I guess…"
Rin looked thoughtful for a while.
"A change… That's nice." He smiled to mostly himself.
"They were pretty cool. A lot cooler than the ones you have now."
"Now all I have to do is buy 30 more pairs." He was looking at the blue sky in thought.
"You're so weird." The older laughed a hearty laugh as he threw his head back and started to tear up.
"Hey! I am not! Enough!"
The demon's laughter died away as he wiped his tears away. He smiled at the flustered expression of his twin.
…
"Come on Yukio let's go!"
The younger stood in the bathroom staring at his troubled reflection in the mirror. He removed his new glasses and put on his old, more plain pair for the fifth time. He was feeling extremely indecisive which was a rarity. He put on his newer pair again wondering if maybe he looked silly in them. They weren't necessarily flashy or anything but they were quite different from his normal frames.
He sighed. They gave him a bit more character and they didn't look horrible or anything. He was just a tad nervous. To others this may not seem like a huge deal but for someone like him who depends on routine and a sense of normality, this was a big change. He didn't have to wear them all the time he concluded. He could switch them up if he wanted to.
"Yukio? Geez for once I'm the one rushing you and the one time I'm awake on tim-"
The older froze as he looked up and took in his brother's timid expression as Yukio looked in the mirror for a moment again before meeting his Rin's eyes.
"What's the matter?" he stepped closer to him and looked in the mirror as well. They were incredibly close, as close as Rin could get to Yukio's face with the slight height difference.
"Wow. You look really different." The older commented.
The younger said nothing but nodded slightly. He was pleased and displeased with this comment. He was afraid of looking 'really different' but at the same time that's what he wanted.
"Yeah."
"You look good. You look great!" he added with a smile. At this proximity Yukio couldn't help but stare at his brother's eyes through the reflection. They were really something.
"Oh… thanks. They look… alright?" Yukio turned to him with an unsure expression that the other wasn't used to seeing
"Yes they do!" He smiled reassuringly. Yukio flinched a bit when he felt a soft petting on his head but soon he leaned into it and allowed this affectionate gesture. It felt really… nice. It made his heart feel an unfamiliar warmth. Only when he'd had his eyes closed for a moment did the petting stop.
How he wished it would continue for just a moment longer.
He opened his eyes to see his brother smiling brightly up at him. His heart fluttered yet again.
