"Really?... It's happening now?"
Too loud.
"Why is it happening so slowly?... of course not!... I guess he knows."
Yukio's eye flickered open at the sound of his brother's 'not so indoor' voice. The exorcist groaned in pain as his head throbbed lightly though not as bad as last night he rubbed his eyes and scratched his messy dark hair.
"What should I do? Should I tell him all this?"
Yukio tried to blink the sleepiness away from his eyes all he could make out was his brother's blurry form facing away from him as he held his phone up to his ear. The younger dragged a hand across his face and began reaching for his newer pair of glasses adjusting them on his face lazily. He just couldn't shake the fogginess away.
It was the panicked tone in his brother's voice that made him a little weary.
"Niisan? What's the matter?" he rubbed a teal eye behind his glasses.
His brother turned abruptly dropping his phone to the floor as his eyes widened in shock.
"Niisan?" he finally gathered the strength to sit up.
"Ohhhhh Yukio! Good morning!" the older retrieved his phone and held it up again.
"I gotta go… thanks… I'll call later." He hung up the phone starring at it blankly for a while before giving his twin a huge anxious grin. It was kind of scary.
"Good morning Niisan. Who were you on the phone with?"
The older shifted on his feet.
"Ohhh… just…. No one."
"uh huh."
"Yeah." He rocked on his feet again. He was staring at him so weirdly.
"Is something wrong?"
Rin shook his head vigorously.
"Hm… ok well get dressed then."
"Oh! I mean you're sick Yukio so I was thinking we could just stay here today… So I can take care of you… because you're sick.."
Yukio raised a brow yet again.
"Yes. I remember. It was just a little migraine. I feel fine now. Are you sure you're feeling well?"
"I feel great!" he answered all too quickly.
Once the younger stood he realized his brother was blocking his way.
"Excuse me Niisan."
"Heh. Oh sorry." He rubbed his head sheepishly yet made no move to get out of the way.
Yukio just sighed as he stepped around his brother and his antics. He realized he was being followed as he made his way to the bathroom. Again Rin stood in front of him, this time his expression worried.
"Niisan what is the matter you? Stop acting so strange." Rin's hand reached out towards his back to grab him as he weaved passed but it was already to late. There were mirrors. Nearly a dozen, being that it was a dormitory bathroom.
"Yukio…"
He watched his brother as he paused in front of the mirror. Rin waited for him to say something. It appeared he was just taking in his reflection, no judgement on his face.
It was quite the shock really. His ears were definitely a little bit pointed unlike yesterday and his canines seemed much longer than they should be.
"Yukio?" He called again.
The younger brought a cautious finger to his tooth that was now very different from the others. He removed his hand and made a sort of noise, like a thoughtful hum of what seemed like acceptance.
"I knew it would happen soon enough."
The shorter had no idea what to respond to that so he folded his hands and just stood there for a moment.
"A-Are you… okay?"
The other's eyes widened for a moment, touching a newly pointed ear.
"Yeah… I am." He turned toward him as he looked at the ground for a moment.
"I really am… okay." He smiled a sad yet contented smile and Rin still didn't believe him right away.
"So… I was talking to Mephisto and he told me some things. Things about you."
Yukio nodded.
"Well we don't exactly know why but your flames have definitely awakened… somehow and now your body is slowly changing into… well to be like mine. I'm not sure why this is happening. I mean for me it happened all at once. I guess you're just a late bloomer heh." He laughed to lighten the mood.
Yukio stared at the ground still processing everything.
"I can help you get through this as with anything else. I'm here for you and I do seem to be a little more experienced in this department."
"Yeah. You are for once."
Rin frowned in mock agitation.
"I mean I can only imagine how lost you'll be once you get your tail."
Yukio's eyes widened at that. He reached around feeling down his back but to his relief he felt nothing.
"Mephisto says it should appear soon. Most likely in your sleep. Geez I wish I could've had such a smooth change. I mean it was a lot to get used to so immediately ya know."
"Yeah it seems I have more time to get used to things as they come."
"Did you still want to go to school? Are you sure you're feeling well?"
He touched a hand to his brother's forehead.
"You're still warm."
"I'm fine."
"Bed."
"But Niisan-"
"Bed, now." The younger sighed in defeat as he went back to his twin bed on his side of the room.
"I have a session this afternoon." He spoke yet his eyes were drifting shut.
"I know."
"Will you come with me?"
"Of course I will. Now get some rest."
Rin ignored whatever it was that was mumbled by his twin. He looked at his sleeping brother and smiled contentedly. He definitely had to get used to his brother's new attributes but he was sure that with time it would become more normal.
. . .
That afternoon they made their way to Ms. Yuushi's office making light conversation along the way.
Upon arriving Ms. Yuushi was standing in the waiting room to greet them for a change.
"Hello boys, how are things?"
"Pretty good."
"Please come in." She gestured towards the doorway. They sat side by side on the large couch in front of her seat where she sat with her legs crossed and a folder in her lap.
"So tell me about the last few days."
Rin immediately started,
"Yukio got new glasses as well some… other new things."
"Oh?"
It was then she really studied him further. He did seem a little different but she wasn't sure how. Yukio interjected,
"Since my awakening I've began to acquire the physical attributes of a half demon, sharper teeth and pointed ears as well as a shorter temper."
"Does anyone know about these developments?"
"Well this… just you, and the head master who apparently has the situation under control."
"I don't trust him as far as I can throw him." Rin pouted sourly.
"Oh Niisan." He chastised slightly.
"I'm glad that's all sorted out for now." She smiled at them thinking that perhaps she should steer the conversation in a lighter direction.
"So Yukio you got new glasses. What brought that about?"
"Nothing really I just wanted a… change. I think I actually like these better."
Her brows rose a bit in awe. This was definitely improvement. While the boy still had his rather serious aura about him it wasn't at all tense but comfortable and relaxed even. He even openly said that he really liked something, something that he chose all on his own.
"That's wonderful. They are very nice."
"Thankyou."
"So have you two been spending more time together?"
They looked to one another simultaneously.
"Oh yeah Yukio and I have been talking a bunch actually. About all kinds of things. I think he finally knows that he can tell me anything."
"Is that true Yukio? Do you feel like you can tell him anything now?"
"Well… I certainly feel more comfortable."
That was almost a no but they were getting somewhere.
"I love spending more time with him. It's been forever since we could just sit and talk for hours ya know?"
She smiled warmly.
"That's wonderful Rin." She opened her folder and scribbled some things down for a moment, "Ok now I need to speak to Yukio alone, just to get more in depth about some things."
"Of course." He smiled at them both before exiting the room.
Her eyes landed on Yukio who was now wearing a small sad smile. Everything wasn't going as well as it seemed.
