Bruce had stuffed himself in between some boxes and his back was suffering the consequences. He figured that they were getting close to San Diego since the workers had started moving around more over the last few hours. He had kept the coveralls from the dock and pulled himself out of the compressed stack of boxes. He stretched and cracked his back getting up and pretending to be working as workers moved around him, "How long before we make it into port?" asked Bruce trying to use lingo that would help him blend in.
One of the other workers looked at him "Should be about two hours" he said turning back to his work stacking up some boxes for transport.
Bruce nodded and walked to a nice dark corner where he could hang until they arrived at their destination. He needed to keep a low profile, in case any of the workers would notice the new face on the ship. He stayed back and watched as the workers finished prepping the cargo and headed back to get ready to come into the harbor.
He was able to blend in better than he thought that he would by helping people unload the various boxes of cargo, he managed to slip away while the other workers were going back to grab more things. He moved freely thanks to his disguise and made his way through the harbor looking for Jebediah Fate, hoping that Rick had given Fate a description since he had neglected to Bruce a description of Fate. He turned and suddenly was fairly sure that he had found him, he saw a man who was literally dressed like a pirate, wearing blue pants with a big black belt with a large gold belt buckle. He was wearing a white puffy shirt pulled straight from Seinfeld and cloth red jacket with a black beard that fell to the bottom of his chest, his black hair was pulled into several braids that fell all around his head. "He is literally a pirate" he said to himself walking towards the man slowly.
Fate looked around holding up the picture that the General Ross had given him so he could pick Banner out of the crowd. He scanned spotting a man who matched the picture and threw it into a garbage can, the deal was pretty easy to make thanks to Banner's name being thrown around on the news over the past few months. Ross was happy to give him what he wanted in exchange for Banner but moving the guy out of San Diego would be an annoyance. "You must be my ride" said Banner coming to him with caution.
Fate smiled showing that he was missing some teeth, "That's me mate" he said motioning for Banner to follow him.
Bruce looked Fate from top to bottom, "You really take the pirate thing serious don't you?" he asked trying to make conversation as they walked.
Fate looked back at him, "My ship is this way" said Fate ignoring Banner's statement. Banner cocked his head as they walked towards a pier.
"Rick said we were taking a plane to New York" said Bruce knowing that Rick was usually spot on with the instructions that he gave out.
Fate cringed his teeth and turned "There was a change of plans, the air is being watched, I figured Jones would get a hold of you somehow" lied Fate taking a left turn that led onto his ship. It was a broken down fishing boat which seemed to Bruce too big for one man to run by himself but didn't say anything as Fate motioned him aboard the boat. Bruce took a seat and watched Fate start the vessel and start heading for the open sea.
"So what's the plan?" asked Bruce looking around hoping to avoid any suspicion.
Fate jumped at the question and looked around nervously "We are heading south, where will go through the Panama Canal and then I will take you all the way to the New York Harbor and then you can avoid the extra trip" he stated hoping that Banner would totally buy into the story. He looked Banner over and felt confident that he had bought the story hook, line, and sinker. "You should take a nap, it's a long trip" stated Fate prompting Banner to lay down and shut his eyes.
Barton and Romanoff were looking over the security footage from the harbor, they had arrived almost immediately after the ship Banner had stowed away on. They watched intently catching a look of Banner walking away with a guy who looked like he just walked out of Pirates of Caribbean. Romanoff took a picture of the man and sent it to Coulson so he could run it through the Shield Identification system. Barton's phone rang and he answered listening intently "Coulson says the guy is named Jebediah Fate, he is reportedly on the Man-Thing victim list" informed Barton putting his phone back in his pocket.
Natasha shook her head, Man-Thing was one of the first domestic cases that Shield was ever tasked with and was considered to be an urban legend. Shield closed the case after a few months and shut down the swamp that the beast was supposedly making its home, every few years fisherman come up with horror stories about seeing the creature and Fate was one of those fisherman. Barton was fiddling on the computer and was able to get his hands on Fate's boat registration, he immediately looked up the boat and found where it was docked. "His boat left not three minutes after that footage was captured" informed Barton as Natasha followed him out.
Barton's phone rang again as they approached the docks, Coulson's voice came through the other end "We know where Fate is taking Banner" he informed them.
"How?" asked Barton with a confused look on his face, wondering if he had underestimated how good Shield's info gathering team is.
"Ross called us, Fate has made a deal to hand Banner over to them at a warehouse near the Panama Canal" Coulson explained obviously trying to tell them that they would be getting on a plane for Panama almost immediately.
Banner woke up to find that the sun had gone down and Fate had a small electric lantern set up in the bridge where Fate was steering the boat. "You've been sleeping for almost two full days. We'll pass through the canal tonight" called out Fate prompting Banner to come into the bridge with him surprised that he had slept so long. "We'll stop a place I have to rest up for the night and then we'll make the long part of the trip over the next few days" explained Fate as they approached the Canal. Bruce felt like a weight had been lifted off of his shoulders as he sighed in relief. Fate opened up a cell phone and could see that Ross was going to be running late and that he needed to keep Banner occupied until they could arrive and bring him in. "How hard could that be?" he sarcastically said to himself.
