25 years have passed since the defeat of Jack of Blades. However, a new one has taken his place; the former Hero of Oakvale, now the menace of Albion. But in Knotthole Glade, the son of Theresa, the Hero's sister, lives. Caius Grim, distant ancestor of who would one day be known as Cornelius Grim was child of few words, so when a group of bandits tried robbing his family, he said nothing about his father's death, and nothing during his brutal torture. But at the end of all the pain, the one and only Jack of Blades walked into the room.

And it was then that Jack's life was ended, with one fell strike from Caius, the great mask fell from his face, revealing white eyes, with red, constantly dilating pupils. Scarred with both mortal and magical blow, he was a brutal looking man. But when he cut his mask, Caius too severed his only tether to this world. And so it was that the reign of a tyrant came to an end.

Caius was hailed as a hero, and eventually he moved south, to Oakvale where he took over what was once Twin Blade's bandit camp, becoming the founder of Bloodstone. His rule here however was merciful unlike previous Heroes who had taken control such as the Butcher (born to the name David) who had taken control slowly starting directly following the death of Twinblade. Caius continued to perform countless acts of kindness and bravery, but one day he returned to his home in Knotthole Glade on a vacation – or so he said. The truth was that Theresa had sent him a letter, saying that she needed to show him something. And so he came, and met her at the statue of his Grandmother.

Theresa then proceeded to do to him what she had done to her brother years ago after he defeated Twinblade; she unleashed the ancient heroic power that flowed in his veins. It was also here that he built a new Heroes' Guild, and stayed there for four years training potential Heroes. Back at home, he had left Stoneshield, his greatest prodigy and the only Hero alive, save Theresa and himself.

But he had no idea what he would stumble upon in Knotthole Glade. On his way back to the small makeshift home he had built, he took a different route without realizing that he was passing his own home until it was too late. For when he passed, he could hear the soft, cryptic, persuasive voice, speaking to him. And he knew that it was the Mask...
