Welcome to my new story I've been obsessed with writing! Well you may or may not know me, I'm Fiygon. Hello!
This is my first time writing a story completely in third-person. But I've found out I like writing in 3rd 20x more then writing in first person, almost feel like I've been missing out all this time. I'm open to criticism, (story wise or writing wise) so I'll happily take any reviews you've got!
This story is completely my own concept, however it is mildly, and I do mean mildly influenced by the persepctiverse. WAIT WAIT Don't leave! If you never liked those stories, you may actually still like this one. It's not really about the same things at all, other then y'know, kids... And this universe is much darker. How you might ask? Well, you'll have to keep reading to find out!
Oh and I'm many many chapters ahead in writing as of now. Chapter releases will be at minimum released on a weekly basis as I edit them and such, at least until I catch up releasing these with what I've written.
Alright, hope you enjoy! Oh also, happy new years!
Chapter 1
"The Silent Apocalypse"
7 Months earlier…
A young boy was walking on the sidewalk, face to the ground and his hands in his raincoat. The rain bounced and slipped off him as he sighed deeply. "I should've brought an umbrella…"
From his left his companion called out, "Goo…dra!" The creature proclaimed happily, as she spun a little bit. The boy had to let himself chuckle at that, she loved the rain. And even if it was a minor annoyance, seeing his friend happy made the trek all the better.
It wasn't long before the boy had made it, as the neon sign of the pokèmart glistened off the wet ground. He took one step through the sliding doors and threw his hood off, shaking all the excess water from his body. His short brown hair was tangled and messy, and he ran his fingers through it for a moment. His Goodra companion did their best to dry off as well, but the boy laughed a bit. "You know Mister Choy doesn't like you trekking water and slime in. I'll be right back, okay?"
The Goodra shrugged and released an annoyed sound as if this wasn't the first time, and shooed the trainer off into the store. After entering and walking to the counter. He called for him, "Mister Choy!"
A gruff voice could be heard coming out of the back of the store, he saw the boy and smiled. "Avery, my boy, isn't it a bit late to come in pestering me for some expired candy?" He teased playfully as he arrived at the counter.
Avery laughed shortly, before digging in his pockets for a second, "Well you got any? No, actually… I'm here to pick up an order." He said, handing him a folded paper.
The store clerk opened and examined it for a moment, with a look of apprehension. "Ah," he muttered, "I'll have that right out for you lad." He said, returning to the back of the store.
Avery examined the pokèmart in his free time, idly wondering if he should pick up something for his companion. But he didn't get much time as he heard a sac hit the counter behind him. He turned to face the older man, "Thanks Choy." Avery muttered as he inspected the inside of the bag, inside was an extra bag of assorted candies. And Avery looked up in intrigue.
"No problem at all lad, the candy is on the house." He said with a wave of his hand, resting his head on his other arm exhaustedly.
Avery beamed gratefully, "It was just a joke. I appreciate it though!"
Choy smiled slightly, before grimacing, "I hope things… work out for you."
Avery's mood dropped slightly, as he nodded in thanks once again, heading for the exit. Once he got back to his companion, he brought a piece of candy out. "Here Luna. They're on the house… from Choy."
She took it gingerly, then looked down at the boy, tilting her head as he seemed sadder than before, she could see it. Something in his little green eyes that told her. Luna popped the candy in her mouth before giving the trainer a surprise hug. "Gooooodra!"
"H-Hey…" Avery said, cracking a smile again, "I'm good, I'm good." He pleaded, tapping her arms in hope of being released. He would worry about slime, but Luna was very good at controlling her slime. And the rain would wash it off regardless.
She let him go, as he popped his hood back up. The rain had lightened considerably, being no more than a drizzle now as they retraced their steps back to home. Avery guarded the bag like his life depended on it. The city was quiet tonight. Very few cars passed, and Avery was thankful for that. Being splashed by rain water by passing cars was always the worst.
On the outskirts of town, a little gray house stood, and he made his way onto its porch. They shook themselves dry once again, and Avery hesitated while reaching for the doorknob. Luna rested a hand on his shoulder, and Avery steeled himself with a large breath and a positive face. Turning the knob and opening it, "I'm home!" He called deeply into the house. Taking his shoes off at the door and hanging his raincoat up, he practically sprinted to his destination.
He got to his mother's room, where she laid in bed. Her covers wrapped tightly, as the TV chirped quietly in the background. He smiled proudly, "I've got it, just in time Mister Choy was closing up shop!" He beamed at his mother. Sitting at her bedside on a small stool.
His mother slowly laughed but it slowly turned into a cough, slowly she reached a shaky hand up to ruffle his hair. "That's my boy. Thank you."
Avery nodded absentmindedly as he took the bag of candy out, "He even gave me some candy for free! He's my favorite store owner."
HIs mother laughed, "Don't eat too much, you haven't even eaten dinner yet."
Luna slowly peaked her head in, "Come in Luna, it's alright." His mother urged before having a coughing fit..
"Goodraaa?" She said, sitting next to Avery slowly.
Avery suddenly stood up, "I'll go get a glass of water for you. It'll be just a sec!" He said rushing off.
Luna leaned over the bed, putting a hand slowly on the covers. Avery's mother slowly reached her hand out and grabbed Luna's hand. Running circles on the back of it with her thumb. "Thank you for bringing that boy some much needed joy." She thanked Goodra.
Luna chirped some sounds almost in an understanding way, as it grew quiet. "Promise me you'll protect him?" She suddenly rasped out.
Luna's eyes widened as she sadly murmured, "Goo…?"
"Please. Take care of my boy." She pleaded once again.
Even with a language barrier, Luna nodded. Repeating a motion that the little trainer had taught her many times before. She brought her free hand up to her chest, and made a crossing motion as she smiled at the woman. This was all she needed, as she smiled contentedly.
Weeks later…
Avery was running home. From out of the forests he had been exploring and down the paths, until he arrived at a sidewalk. He ran for what felt like miles, jumping up onto the porch without a single stair. He practically lunged through the door. "Dad!" Avery cried out.
His father came running worriedly from his mother's room, "Yeah, what's up?"
Avery held a finger up, panting wildly as he caught his breath, "There's… a pokemon… right out in the forests…" he said, gasping for breath.
His father scratched the back of his head, "I fail to see the point in-"
"It's a Growlithe dad! They're like, super rare! Please can I borrow your pokeballs?"
Avery's father shook his head, "Son, you haven't even been trained to be a trainer yet."
"But I am one!" He replied desperately, holding up the pokeball of Luna.
His father sheepishly scratched the back of his head as he sighed, "Son, Luna… I gave her to you sort of as a bodyguard… not really as a substitute for a starter pokemon. Think of Luna more as… a super cool babysitter."
Avery rolled his eyes, and pushed even more, "But what if Growlithe was my starter?" That'd be so cool!"
"It's a lot of responsibility son. I'm not sure if you're ready to go on a journey yet." His father reasoned.
"You went on one when you were eleven too! Why can't I? It's almost summer and I won't even be missing any school!" He asked through gritted teeth.
His father kneeled down, looking into his teared up eyes. "Son… I just want you to… think about this a bit more level-headedly. Alright?" Avery took a deep breath and slowly but surely nodded.
"Good… Listen, your mother." His father didn't know the words to continue that train of thought, "She's-"
"She's what… dad?" Avery said angrily, glaring at him slightly.
He sighed, "I just don't want you to be gone. In case she…" he couldn't finish the sentence as he looked down at his boots.
Avery didn't want to hear another word, he didn't wait as his eyes filled with tears and he rushed up the stairs to his bedroom. "Son, wait!"
In his bedroom, Avery looked at the many pictures of his dad on a pokemon adventures. Pictures of him and his team, his father winning gym badges and small tournaments. He felt selfish for wanting to be a trainer so bad, but he also felt upset. Like his opportunity to see the world was being taken from him. The sound of Luna popping out of her pokeball caught his attention. Avery sighed slowly, glancing at her. She walked over to his bed and sat on it, gesturing for him to come to her. "Ooodra."
Avery relented, walking over to his bed and sitting down on it as well. Luna did this when she wanted him to talk about his feelings, he thought it was silly, sometimes it helped him. But this time he didn't have much to say, all he did was cry. Luna gently guided him to lay down, his head resting on her lap. "Luna is mom?… is she really going to…-" he said slowly before bursting into tears even harder.
Luna wasted no time, picking the small in comparison human up, cradling him to her chest. She nuzzled his face and wiped his tears away. His head rested on her shoulder as he cried his sorrows away.
A week later…
Avery wiped sweat from his brow. It was hot, muggy, and cloudy. Completely unbearable weather. Spring had just ended and summer was rearing its ugly head. Of course Avery wasn't bothered by the change in season, summer was a time with no school. Where he could roam the town and eat ice cream with friends. He thought it would be just like any other summer, every other year it had been the same. So why would anything change now? Avery couldn't quite place it but there was something off about that day.
This was another day where his mother had sent him to get things from the store. It was becoming a regular occurrence, what with his father always being busy and his mother bedridden. His father had been home today, but Avery thought it'd be a good opportunity to stretch his legs. He loved exploring the town, even though he could likely recount every single tree and bush from his house to the store.
"Evening, Avery!" Said a voice from his right, a neighbor not too far down the street that had always been somewhat of a friend to him.
Avery smiled and waved back at the man who was watering his yard with the hose, "Hey Wyatt, how you been?"
He tipped his hat, "Oh you know, just the regular old boring adult chores. Gotta keep my wife happy, especially since our wedding anniversary is coming up."
Avery laughed, "Well you have fun with that, I'm running errands for mom today so I've gotta keep the pace up."
He chuckled, "Guess we're both doing boring adult stuff eh? See ya later Avery."
Walking down the sidewalk more, and crossing a few roads that lead further into town. A lot of people seemed to be out today. There was some commotion seemingly going around about a news story, but Avery paid no mind to it. He could see the store up ahead now, right as he passed a lady he wasn't too familiar with. She had an Eevee down by her side, who happily pranced along with the woman. The Eevee caught sight of him, and out of curiosity came up and nudged his leg, "Veee?"
Avery instantly smiled delightedly, as he knelt to look at the small fox pokemon, "Oh they're so cute. Mind if I pet them?"
"Knock yourself out, she's a sucker for scratches." The lady replied.
Avery happily obliged and began scratching below her chin, the Eevee nearly melted as she leaned into it. "Vee…" it said contentedly.
A sound alerted Avery as the lady in front of him seemed to gasp. Avery sighed exasperatedly and stood up slowly, looking at Luna who had popped out to say hello to the Eevee. The lady calmed down a bit, "Sorry, your Goodra just caught me off guard."
The two pokemon were conversing in whatever language the pokemon speaked, and Avery laughed awkwardly, "She's really a sweet pokemon. Though I wish there was a way to warn others before she decides to come out."
The lady cocked her head, having to look up at the gentle imposing form of the 'mon. "Are they always this tall?"
Avery nodded, "Yep, Luna is six feet tall exactly! It's actually below average too."
"Wow," the woman muttered, suddenly realizing something, "I best be off. You two enjoy your day!"
They parted ways as they walked down the sidewalk. Avery looked at the nonchalant Goodra and sighed deeply. Whilst she was too busy admiring the weather, more moisture meant a happier Luna. "You need to be careful sometimes Lulu," He warned, using an old nickname he used to use as a child, "I would hate for you to pop out and something bad happens."
The Goodra acknowledged his worries with a hum, "Goo… dra?"
As if he could actually understand her he carried on the conversation, "Yes I know you like to make sure I'm alright…"
He couldn't bring himself to argue anymore, he smirked at her antics as she shrugged lightly. Though Avery had to admit, this is what he loved about this town. Everyone was so open and accepting of pokemon. He loved roaming the streets and meeting random trainers, or families who just had their own interesting companions of their own.
Avery arrived at the pokemart finally, urging his Goodra back into the pokeball as it was the middle of the day. Too many customers would make it impossible to bring her in. Right before entering he would swear he heard an explosion in the distance, though that would be less of a surprise due to the pokemon gym. He happily entered the shop, the jingle of the bell above the door alerting anybody to his entrance.
The first thing Avery raised his eyebrow at was how quiet it was. There wasn't a single soul in the shop on what should be a busy day. Though he only shrugged it off, assuming it was more of a plus than a minus. Whilst shopping for his things, some of the aisles seemed to have things strewn across the ground. A few shopping carts left unattended, and some products on the floor. Avery wrote it off, maybe he had missed some super large sale, and they'd yet to clean up the aftermath.
It was on one aisle while shopping where he picked up a ladies wallet that surprised him. He nodded and decided to bring it up to the counter along with the rest of his stuff. "Hey, Mister Choy!" Avery called out, setting the wallet on the counter. But silence reigned in the store. "Some lady left her wallet, mind helping me out? I also have groceries!"
Avery tapped his finger on the counter whilst waiting, the sound was deafening in the silence, growing increasingly frustrated he called out again, "Hey I'm not here to beg for free stuff this time! I brought money!" He called into the backroom where he usually was.
Another minute of silence passed as Avery grew impatient. Maybe he had only fallen asleep? He knew the man well enough, surely it wouldn't be a problem to just go looking for him? And that's exactly what he did. He crossed the employee section and behind the counter, gently knocking on the doorframe as he entered. "Old man, you in here?"
But when he got back there, there was no sign of Choy. A half burnt cigarette lay helplessly on the ground. As stacks of money were left on the table in front of a chair. Avery snuffed the cigarette with his shoes and examined the table. This was completely unlike Choy to leave money out. 'Maybe he's testing me or something?' He thought to himself.
Avery slowly backed out of the room, scratching his head in confusion. It was when he heard multiple other explosions outside that his attention was really caught. Was there some sort of attack from an organization, and Avery hadn't gotten clued in? Maybe that's where everyone ran off to! Avery left his things on the counter, running outside to survey his surroundings. Avery stood in confusion at what he saw, multiple cars had crashed into surrounding fences and walls. A few into each other. But the thing that freaked him out the most, was that they were all empty. He looked further down the street, and some cars sat at red stop lights, their drivers completely missing. If this was an attack, why wouldn't they have driven off?
This is when the strangest thing happened, which nearly sent Avery into panic. His only pokeball which contained Luna floated out of his pack, and hovered in the air for a moment. Avery looked at it in bewilderment, "Luna? Luna what's going on!?"
That was when the pokeball shot off into the sky like a comet, and he saw about a few hundred more pokeballs streaming across the sky. They were all headed in one direction that he could see. Another explosion finally shocked him back to reality. That was when Avery began to run, his one goal to ask his father for help with getting Luna back from whatever had taken it.
Whilst running down the street, he saw the little eevee from before looking around in confusion and terror. Her trainer was nowhere to be found, and had seemingly abandoned the 'mon. Eevee locked confused eyes with Avery before she got absorbed back into her pokeball, shooting off into the sky with all of the rest of them. Avery fell backwards onto his rump, and released a terror filled yelp at that. Picking himself back up and sprinting as fast as possible back home. He passed Wyatt's house, the hose he was using was seemingly dropped on the lawn, spraying haphazardly at nothing. Avery's eyes widened with even more fear.
He heard a loud whistling sound, and looked up. A large airplane overhead was very close to the ground, and then suddenly ended up nosediving, and exploded brilliantly into the forest a mile or two away. The shock of the blast made Avery stand still, staring at the cloud and flames as it rose higher into the sky. Panic finally overtook the child, and he nearly tripped running the rest of the way home.
He finally made one long jump onto his porch, swinging the door open wildly. "Mom!? Dad?!" He yelled.
"Avery!? In here Avery!" He heard his dad's voice yell from in his mom's bedroom.
A wave of relief washed over him, as his heartbeat fell a bit. His parents were safe, of course they were. This must all be a big misunderstanding. He began running to their room when he heard his dad yell, "N-No. No! Avery!" He yelled in terror.
Once again Avery's body pumped adrenaline as he swung open his mother's door, and was met with nobody. His father wasn't there, and neither was his mother. Avery's heart shattered into a hundred pieces. They had just been here, his dad's voice was undeniable. And now they are just gone? How in the world was that even possible? He stepped forward a bit, before hearing a voice on TV. He swung his head to the right, the news station was on. There was obvious panic in the background of the program, as a very scared looking newscaster frantically tried to describe the situation.
"-and I repeat. Yveltal has succeeded. Yveltal has just entered into his hibernation state. Nobody can stop him now. Say goodbye to your loved ones right now. I repeat, Yveltal has-" In the midst of giving this information, her face suddenly went horrified. A red energy surrounded them and she evaporated into nothingness. As if nobody had even been there.
The camera crew on the show had begun to scream in horror, but Avery had no mind for it, as the TV's footage cut to a blue screen stating only a few words.
"STATE OF EMERGENCY - ALL REGIONS - UNDER ATTACK BY THE POKEMON"
Avery fell to his knees on the floor, he felt a buzzing in his head. He looked up at his mother's bed, then down at his knees. He began to cry profusely, the horror of it all catching up to him. Everything made sense now, Wyatt, Choy… his parents… Everyone was gone. And soon he would be too, is what he assumed.
He wept for what felt like forever, when he suddenly remembered Luna. He panicked briefly, "Was she gone too? Where were all the pokemon going?"
It was then that the awful alert sounded from the TV, as side scrolling of text began at the bottom of the screen. Avery stood up and read it attentively.
"STATE OF EMERGENCY - ALL REGIONS - ADULTS ARE THE ONLY ONES BEING ABSORBED BY YVELTAL - POKEMON ARE UPRISING EVERYWHERE AND ARE ON THE ATTACK - SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY -" It began to repeat itself.
Avery stood in wonder for a few seconds. He was safe? Only the adults were gone? He panted heavily for a moment, did that mean he could find Luna? But if the pokemon really were attacking, he needed to seek shelter. But why exactly would the pokemon attack? Avery shook his head, and did what his dad always warned him to do in an emergency situation, and did the first rational thought in his mind.
Avery ran upstairs to a closet, pulling out a large backpack meant for long camping or hunting trips. He packed everything he could think of, clothes, food, something to write or draw on. He filled it until he wouldn't be able to run with it on if he filled it further. His father had a shelter out in the wilderness about six miles from town. It was mostly because his dad needed a place to stay while he was out looking for pokemon. But it was stocked to the brim with supplies in case of an actual emergency. And in Avery's opinion, this definitely fit the bill!
He quickly exited his house, the sun was setting now and a gloom filled the sky. He heard children in the distance screaming or wailing in what he hoped was fear. He saw fires everywhere, smoke throughout the city. He didn't even want to think about what was happening elsewhere. This was pure survival instinct and by god he would survive. So he hefted his pack further up his back and ran down the street in the direction of the bunker.
But his feet faltered when he passed by two cars that had collided, and he heard the sound of someone yelling for help. He slowly turned to the burning car, thinking only for a second about the danger. He threw off his pack and ran up to it, "Hey! Where are you! I can help!" Avery yelled.
Though he didn't take long to see the kid, barely holding on as she was stuck in the back seat. The doors were crushed beyond opening, and smoke was filling the back cabin. Avery quickly yelled, "Cover your head! I'm going to break the window!" He waited for a second before shattering the window with his elbow, which he had to admit hurt really bad.
"Come to my voice!" Avery yelled into the smoke filled cab.
It wasn't long before a kid roughly a year or so younger than him stuck her hand out the window. Avery scrambled, grabbing the kid's arm and searching for the rest of her body. It was quite easy to pull her out after that. They rolled to the ground with a grunt, as the kid began coughing profusely. Avery looked worriedly down at the little blonde girl, she was maybe a year younger than him, but she was definitely smaller. "Talk to me! You alright?"
She coughed a bunch, before opening her blue tear filled eyes, "Y-Yes."
Avery contemplated for a moment. He mulled it over again and again, and almost grunted at his own decision. "Hey, we've gotta get out of here things are bad. I know a place to hide."
Her eyes widened, "Really? I'm so confused… Mom and dad they just…" tears began running down her face.
Avery nodded quickly, feeling sorry for the girl but filled with a sense of urgency, "I know. Mine too. But we have to go, right now." He urged the girl who only lightly nodded.
A whistling sound became apparent, as Avery turned to the car. The flames had expanded quite a bit, and had reached the battery. His eyes widened, horrified. They were too close, and he had no time to warn the girl. In an act of selflessness, Avery braced as he threw his body on top of the girl and covered her ears for her as hard as possible.
The last thing Avery heard was an explosion, a boom so loud it made his ears ring for what felt like forever. The force of the blast was terrible, knocking the breath out of him and sending him flying. And some shrapnel had cut him up a good bit. But that wasn't the worst of it. The blonde girl shook Avery back to the real world, she looked panicked. Avery jerked awake, feeling pain all over, but the adrenaline was still rushing. The girl opened her mouth and spoke, but Avery grimaced as he didn't hear a word. In fact, he couldn't hear anything anymore.
Avery gently brought a finger to his ear, and brought it back into view. Both ears were bleeding. He snapped his fingers in one ear, then the next, yet the only thing he had was silence. He had lost one of his senses, his eardrums had been blown out. Avery looked around, remembering his first objective, once they were safe he could mourn the loss of his hearing. He spoke out loud, the sense of talking without hearing yourself was odd, and he was sure he slurred his speech. "M-My hearing is gone. Let's g-go." The child seemed horrified by his words, but she nodded deliberately, helping him to his feet. Avery stumbled to his backpack, before shrugging it over his shoulders. This made it abundantly clear how much the impact had hurt.
Avery resorted to hand gestures, as if he was some drill sergeant instructor. He pointed in the direction they were going, and gestured for her to follow. His head hurt terribly, and other places on his body felt bruised and shredded, however he marched onwards. Once they passed the line into the forest he tried to whisper, "Hold t-the back of my backpack. Since I can't hear now, t-tug on it if someone is coming." He hoped he got the message through. Two gentle tugs told him he had been successful.
For miles it felt like he walked. Well mostly because it was miles. The trek wasn't treacherous in any way, just regular forests. But wild pokemon liked to roam, and Avery kept his eyes on high alert for any sense of movement. But it was as if the forest was dead. In the new space of quietness Avery had, it gave lots to think about. 'Why would the pokemon attack us?' Was his main thought. 'Surely Luna wasn't part of it? Maybe it was only some pokemon?' But it would remain unanswered for now, as he arrived at a familiar area with a pond. He quickened his pace now as he walked to a nearby hill through a few bushes. Hidden by about a dozen trees, was a large metal door which had grass and leaves plastered to it. It basically looked like just another part of the hill. He opened the door which had no lock on the outside, and they both entered.
There was a code lock on the inside though. And the first thing Avery did was input the code. He walked forward a bit into the bunker, on the left was a room with four beds. In the right room was a pantry with countless amounts of canned foods and other non-perishables. A gas stove and a sink, with cleaning supplies to wash their clothes with, and medical supplies. At the back of the main room was a bathroom, and the main room itself merely had a few couches with a radio on the table. Board games were strewn across the shelves on the top as well. He was thankful his dad had a lot of money from being a renowned trainer, this bunker would be helpful.
The girl looked around in wonder and surprise. Yet Avery slumped the pack to the ground, and basically fell to the floor. His adrenaline had worn out, and his body felt like hell. It was a few minutes later when he felt a tap on his shoulder, and he glanced up. The girl had a wet washcloth with her, and had brought the medical supplies as well. She smiled before gently cleaning the dried blood from his face, he tried to keep himself awake, but he couldn't. He passed out right there, in the care of a total stranger that he had risked his life for. And she was even younger than he was, he almost laughed at the irony as he slipped into unconsciousness.
That was his first day.
The first day of the apocalypse.
