Prologue - Flung from Reality!
The night sky that had blanketed the city in its usual form of slumber was turning from a dark purple to a pure light blue coloured one as the sun broke over the horizon and lit its gaze onto the smaller houses and apartments. Birds were flapping their wings and flying about while the sun's pure rays began their task of awakening the people. For many, it was yet another bright and warm day that was beginning but for some, it was a sign of a repeating pattern.
In one of the many dimly lit apartments was a room where snoring could be heard from underneath the sheets along with a small lock of brown sticking out from the openings. Aside from the occasional snores, there was nothing disturbing the peace within the room.
There were various types of furniture placed inside the room to give it more vibrancy. The first was a retro-styled dining table with a whitish-brown color scheme and it was surrounded by four metallic chairs with a red cover to keep them comfortable. Atop the table was a laptop with a wireless mouse that was currently shut-off along with sheets of paper scattered around that beheld scribbles on them.
Attached to the wall were cupboards with glass doors that housed items that were valuable to the occupants of the house such as small baskets with perfumes and make-up. Besides that, there were also different types of books for studying and practice. On top of a small ground cabinet was a HD TV that was currently inactive and the remote sitting in front while at the far right end near the edge was an iPhone 11 whose back was protected by a plastic case.
The bed in which the occupant was currently asleep on was a gray-coloured couch with metal legs and a simple armrest. And from underneath the white-colored sheets, a set of snores could be heard once more as-
The peace was shattered as the iPhone began to buzz followed by a musical tone sounding off and startling the occupant from the insides with a groan. "No… just one more hour… let me sleep." The sound of the speaker's voice betrayed the fact that the sleeping figure was a young woman.
She prayed that the alarm would just go back into silent mode and let her continue her peaceful slumber. Humans weren't meant to function at this hour! She didn't want to get up! All she needed was sleep!
Her initial plan was to ignore it and pray that it would go back to silent mode at any given moment. Unfortunately, it was not to be as the alarm kept on going and that melody that she regretted selecting continued to blare its catchy if somewhat annoying tune.
'You take it on the run, baby…
If that's the way you want it, baby…
Then I don't want you around…
I don't believe it…
Not for a minute…
You're under the gun…
So you take it-'
The melody was cut off as the pale-skinned finger turned off the alarm before shutting off the iPhone and putting it down on the cabinet. Feeling a yawn approaching, a hand blocked it while another proceeded to rub her sleep-deprived eyes. Afterwards, she proceeded to stretch up a bit before groaning. "Ugh, I should have cracked a window. I reek like hell…"
Slipping a pair of flip-flops on her pale-skinned feet, the young woman started to walk straight for the door… and unfortunately ended up colliding into a wall. The end result was that she collapsed on the ground and groaned… It was official. She truly hated early mornings and having to be aroused from bed when all she wanted was nothing more than to go back to sleep and then awaken later once a more appropriate time had arrived.
"Someone put me back to sleep please…" The girl pleaded while groaning on the ground.
(Sometime later…)
'Another day, another dollar.' Those were the current thoughts of the 67-year old woman who was sipping a cup of coffee in the kitchen and enjoying the peace of the moment. As she drank, her mind drifted to the list of chores she needed to do on this day.
"Hmm… I need to do the laundry, go to the nearest store and buy some chocolate, pay the electric and water bills, iron the sheets and-"
Her sentence came to a halt as she turned to see the kitchen door opening slowly as someone stepped in while blocking a yawn with her left hand.
Around 17 but very close to approaching 18 years old, her long hair that stopped at mid-length and having short bangs at the front was coloured into a soft brown color while her half-closed eyelids with blue irises depicted tiredness in them. Her clothes were nothing special - an ordinary white short-sleeve dress shirt with a red tie and gray jean shorts while her feet garneted a pair of slippers.
Stretching her arms and then blocking out another yawn, she waved at the woman. "Morning, Nana."
"Morning, dear. Sleep well?" The old woman questioned with a small smile that appeared on her lips.
The girl's response was but a simple yawn that she blocked with her hand once more. The grandmother's smile faded a bit and she made a serious face. "I thought as much… go to sleep a bit earlier, Anastasia. You shouldn't stay up so late."
Anastasia, as her grandmother called her, just sighed and rubbed her eyes. "I know, Nana. I know… and it's 'Anya'."
The old woman passed a cup filled with fresh hot coffee towards Anya who took it in her hands. Taking a sip, she felt the caffeine rush buzz through her body while the hot drink almost burnt her tongue. Ah, fresh morning delight with a hint of milk and two spoons of sugar, just as she liked it.
"Off to work as usual, dear?" Her grandma asked and received a nod from her grandchild.
Besides her usual plans for this summer, Anya had also decided on applying for a part-time job as a barista in order to earn some money and make sure that her grandma didn't have to worry about anything else. The brunette had concocted a two-pronged plan for what she would be spending the money on. The first half of the money would be given to her grandmother to pay for anything that she required such as groceries or bills.
While the second half would be going directly to applying to Sofia University's Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology where she would start taking courses in English and American Studies in order to better familiarize herself with how to write at a professional level. Any class that she took there would bring her one step closer to her true calling.
Taking another sip from coffee, she looked at the clock on the wall. It was now 7:36 a. m. in the early morning and only 24 minutes remained until her shift began at her work place! Drinking the rest of the contents, she put the dirt cup in the sink and then went to brush her teeth quickly. Her grandmother's lips twisted into a small frown. "What about breakfast?"
Despite not poking her head out from the bathroom, Anya's voice sounded off from the inside. "I'll buy something once I'm on my break, Nana!"
The grandmother sighed heavily... And she had just prepared Anya's favorite dish: a bowl of strawberry porridge and some juice to wash it down with. Now she'll have to throw them away… again. As much as she loved her granddaughter, she could be so rushed and careless. The old woman knew exactly where she got that attitude from.
Taking another sip from her coffee, the old woman walked over to the drawer and took out some folio before cutting a piece that was large enough to cover the top of the dish. Perhaps Anya would eat at a later time or when she got home in the afternoon. For now, it was going straight into the fridge.
A few minutes later, Anya had returned to the living room and opened the cupboard to fetch her glasses case which she opened. Taking out her glasses, she slipped them on and blinked. All those years of wasting on a computer and typing on Microsoft Word for hours definitely took their toll… as a result, she was forced to wear glasses.
The decision was definitely a bad one since she was the subject of endless ridicule in high school and the ongoing nickname that she received: Four Eyes McWritey. A jab at both her intellect and the fact that she wore glasses. Idiots… all of them. In the end, she just ignored them and focused on her own studies.
Unfortunately, all that ignoring leads to more problems - bullying, teasing and just plain idiocy. Anya did her best to just remain positive yet it had no effect. All of her classmates came up with ridiculous and cruel methods with which to annoy her. It was unbearable and she concluded that high school was a bitch.
Not to mention she didn't have a lot of friends… only a couple that had sympathized with her. Like Elena who was her co-worker at the cafe.
Speaking of that, Anya shook her head and pushed away the negative thoughts before picking up the phone and checking the time: 7:43 a.m! Shit, she's gonna be late!
Putting the case back in the cabinet, she took out a small box and pulled out a necklace with a heart-and-moon symbol that she put around her neck. This special heirloom was a gift from her mother which she treasured a lot… the last thing that she received, prior to her parent's divorce.
Once she was done putting the box back in its proper place, Anya grabbed her waist-bag and put everything else that was needed before bolting for the front door. Putting on her black sandals, she tied up the soles as her grandmother joined to say her goodbyes. "Be sure and grab something to eat. You look so skinny."
Anya rolled her eyes. "I know, Nana… and no need to rub it in. I can take care of myself just fine."
"I'm just looking out for you, dear. No need to act all high and mighty with me." Her grandmother scolded in a tone that made Anya feel a little bit bad.
She sighed before admitting an apology. "Sorry, Nana. Just feeling a little cranky thanks to me getting up so early. Didn't mean to act like a jackass…"
"I know, dear… I'm just trying to make sure that you are fed and cared for. Especially after what happened with your-"
"Don't. Please, Nana… don't remind me." Anya pleaded as the memories were too painful to remember.
Seeing the tone in her granddaughter's voice made the old woman come to a halt. She didn't finish the sentence and just gave her a small hug. "Be safe out there and on your best behavior, got it?"
Anya nodded and then zipped out of the door while her grandmother just watched her go down the stairs. Releasing a sigh, she closed the door and went to do her chores.
(Bohemian Cafe - near the park…)
A door on the knock interrupted her private thoughts as the black-haired and green eyed Elena Yakova was by the bar and flipping the pages of a magazine without taking her gaze off them. "Enter."
The door opened as Anya stepped in and took deep breaths while grabbing her feet. "So… sorry I'm… l-late… Ugh…"
Elena, who was still flipping her magazine, just gave a small grin. "Morning, Anastasia Stefanova. You definitely are late today." She gave a false mock which made the brunette glare at her.
"I was running… as fast as I could, Elena…" Anya replied back with an annoyed tone.
It made the other girl chuckle. "Relax, dummy. I'm just teasing you… and besides, the boss isn't around… much to our relief. If asked, I'll tell her that you went to the store to fetch us something to eat."
"Oh… wait, you haven't had breakfast as well?" Anya asked incredulously and received a nod from her fellow co-worker.
Putting away the magazine, Elena felt her stomach growling and frowned. "Shift just started… but the local store is around the corner. I can go there and buy us some waffles for breakfast while you keep watch behind the counter. Won't be long, I promise."
"Alright… but hurry back. I don't want to have to give an explanation to the boss since I'm not in the mood to deal with anything at the moment."
Elena kept her frown. "Someone's been a little cranky today."
"I know… I didn't get much sleep to be honest… rather be back in my bed and snoring for the rest of the day." Anya admitted while blocking out another yawn.
Elena gave her a sympathetic look as she grabbed her purse before walking out the door. "Be back in a couple of minutes. Hold down the front."
"Will do." Anya saluted.
Once Elena was gone, Anya walked over to the coat stand and hung her waist bag on it before assuming her position behind the counter. Now all there was left to do was wait for potential customers to arrive so she could get on with serving them. She also prayed that they would get lots of people today at the Bohemian since she was eager to earn her paycheck for a job well done.
Tapping her fingers on the counter, she felt another yawn coming which was blocked by her hand. Smacking her lips, she wondered if she should make herself some coffee in the backroom before slumber had a chance to overtake her. The last thing she needed was getting scolded by her boss for falling asleep at her workplace.
Turning around, she was about to head straight for the backroom when her gaze fell upon something sticking out of the door that led to the area that she wanted to go to… something that was unfamiliar to her. And those pupiless yellow eyes… it gave her the creeps.
Then it disappeared from her sight much to her surprise. Where… where did it go!? There was no way out since there wasn't a backdoor in that room. So, where did it go? She had to investigate.
Grabbing a nearby glass bottle from the shelf, she tip-toed towards the door leading to the backroom before approaching it and putting her hand on the handle. Twisting it down, she opened the door and stepped inside to look around for the source of the mysterious being that she saw… the one with those yellow eyes.
The backroom wasn't large and she didn't know where exactly it could be hiding. Under the table or maybe behind one of the boxes containing soda or beer. It had to be here somewhere… There wasn't a door that led to the outside except for the windows that were currently closed.
She whistled her attempts to draw it out. "Little pest… come out, come out… I know you're in here somewhere."
It had zero effect and she couldn't see any signs of it nor its pupiless yellow eyes. All of this made her wonder if Elena was trying to pull a prank on her even though she already told her that she wasn't in the mood- GAH!
S-something just landed atop her head! "H-hey, get off!" She struggled to push it off yet it remained where it sat no matter how hard she tried to get it off.
"Get off! Get of- OUCH!" Whatever landed somehow managed to scratch the top of her head as she felt a bit of blood pouring down. The pain was unbearable… yet she had enough and grabbed whatever it was that- What the hell?
The thing turned out to be a very weird and small creature with skin as black as coal itself… and having piercing yellow eyes and wiggled antennas. The fuck was this- "OUCH!" That thing scratched her and she saw an open wound on her left arm with blood pouring out. Putting pressure on her wound with her right hand, she had to find a first aid band or get Elena's help quickly. She'll know what to do with… Wait.
Two… four… seven… 11… 13… 15 yellowish-coloured eyes were watching her! What the hell was this shit…?
Then all of a sudden, the room was filled with creatures similar to the one that delivered the head and arm scratch not a few seconds ago. She swung the bottle at them but it had no effect which was very bad for her situation! It gave the little buggers the cue to jump and pounce on her.
"H-hey, get off me! GET THE HELL OFF ME! OUCH! AGH!" Anya felt a sharp pain as the creatures started to scratch her on different parts of her body and blood began to pour out… it was the most unbearable punishment that she had ever experienced.
Help… she had to get help. She needed to get someone… a-anyone… her vision was beginning to feel hazy. Though she did her best to stand up and run, the creatures were pinning her with no signs of getting off of her.
"U-ugh… n-no…" Anya pleaded as tears ran down her eyes. She… she didn't want to die yet! She hadn't even accomplished half the things she wanted to do! She can't die now!
Little did she know that the creatures were beginning to melt into puddles that covered the entire room… and sadly, Anya was caught in the crossfire. She was beginning to get sucked into the puddle.
As Anya felt her vision blackening, she thought about her co-worker and friend Elena who would no doubt wonder where she went… her grandmother would probably be worried sick and filing a missing person's report. It wouldn't matter though… they wouldn't even learn that she was about to die and would never again see them.
As the darkness took a hold and blocked her vision, Anya only had one thing in mind before the end came: death was such a bitch and life wasn't fair… it definitely wasn't fair at all.
Author's Notes: Hey, dear readers! Got some news for all of you. So, I've been doing some thinking and after examining the Rogue Keybearer story that I wrote and its chapters, not to mention speaking with my beta reader and having to review the chapters I've done, I've seen how awkwardly and badly paced they are. Too much fast-forwarding and badly written sentences and words.
So, I decided that instead of deleting everything and forgetting about the story, I should rewrite my work from scratch and make some changes. Changes such as:
- Anya lives with her grandmother instead of being alone;
- She has a part-time job as a barista at a local cafe;
- Due to a lot of bullying and endless teasing in school, she has a lot of trust issues and doesn't have a lot of friends (except for Elena, her co-worker);
- Her parents are also divorced as well;
- Won't be adding Ava as her mentor or her ward. Instead, I'll think on how to make her receive the Keyblade;
- Will still keep her goal to be a novelist;
And other changes I'll be adding to the story. We'll see how it goes down and what happens from here on in. With a little bit of luck, the rewrite should definitely make a better outcome for Rogue Keybearer.
Wish me all luck in the rewrite and let's hope for the best! I will expand the story and give it a much needed polish unlike the first attempt when I started this with Ava and Anya meeting.
And thus, I leave you all to enjoy the rewritten chapter! I don't own Kingdom Hearts nor any of the worlds I'll use. I only own my self-insert Anya and other properties I can claim as my own!
P. S. Given the fact that Olette will be a companion and friend to Anya, would you like for me to expand her character a bit better? Make her feel important? If so, what would say if she was the daughter of a person who owned a small hotel or maybe a shop in Twilight Town? What do you think I should do? Give me your answers in the review box and I'll put them to work.
