Chapter 1 Toska
Thirty Miles Outside of Vladivostok, Off the Sea of Japan
"The plane flew over the body of water as Sam stood there waiting. He had on the new suit with the shield attached to his back ready. As he made sure he was ready he looked over and saw Bucky walking over to him. Bucky's newer uniform held more Navy Blue than black. Bucky liked it, it reminded him of his Howling Commando Days.
"Two minutes!" Torres yelled as Annie came over. Her old Widow suit remained the same. She held out her hand holding some ear pieces for them as the boys took them and started to get ready. Annie then reached for a parachute pack and got ready.
"Hey," Annie started as she looked to Bucky and he came over and started to make sure she was strapped in. "There's that new Asian fusion place," She started and Sam smirked shaking his head a bit. "Was wondering if we should make it a date?" She looked at Bucky as he buckled her in.
"What's Asian fusion?" Bucky asked and that gave Sam a chuckle. Bucky was blending more and more into society but there was still so much to learn.
"It's good, you should go." Sam answered and Annie smiled back. "Alright," Sam came over to do the mission briefing. He held up his arm as a holographic image appeared showing a building. "Red Wing mapped out the place," He started. "Bucky, you're the strong arm but be quick and quiet, we got about thirty people there." Sam continued. "Annie, infiltrate and head here," Sam had the hologram zoom in. "You should be able to access the mainframe." Annie nodded.
"Fifty seconds!" Torres updated them.
"What data collection you want?" Annie asked.
"Whatever you can pull." Sam answered. Natasha did a huge data dump when S.H.I.E.L.D was compromised so a lot HYRDA's secrets were out but not all of it. "Alright, remember just hurt them a little," Sam started.
"Unless they're shooting at you then take them out." Annie added and Sam rolled his eyes.
"See you two inside." He then stepped off the plane and his wings expanded and he was off to the building. Bucky came to the exit, looked down and then leaned forwards and went free falling. He pulled himself together in a tucked position and landed softly with his vibranum arm taking the brunt of the fall.
"You're sticking the landings these days." Bucky heard Annie over the ear piece. Bucky quickly looked around the outside of the building and looked up seeing Sam was circling the place and saw Annie making her landing. Bucky started off knowing going through the front door wasn't an option so he looked around and saw some high windows. He took a step back and started to run and scaled the building. Bucky looked at the window and with the vibranum arm he placed his fingertips to the glass and broke it just enough to put his arm in and opened the window just enough. He got in and looked around the old building. Bucky then jumped over a railing and landed on the ground looking around the dark place. He came to a door and let Annie as she looked around.
"We're in." Annie announced as Sam continued to circle a perimeter.
"Head north." Sam started as he was going to meet them inside. Bucky started first as Annie followed him.
"So an infusion restaurant usually is a combination of two foods," Annie started as an armed man came from the shadows. He charged to Bucky as Annie continued to walk while Bucky took him out. Another man came from the shadows and Bucky continued to fight. "So it could be like sushi burgers or sushi tacos." Annie continued to explain as Bucky took down the two men.
"I don't think I've ever had sushi…not real sushi." Bucky held the conversion as he knocked out the last man. Annie looked to a door and opened it seeing a large computer room.
"It'll be fun, I'll set a reservation when we get back." Annie then sat down at a desk as Bucky looked around making sure there was no one. "Alright, I'm in," Annie started.
"Thirty seconds before they start to notice something." Sam reminded her. Annie went to work as Bucky saw another guard running to him about to pull out a gun. Bucky took out a knife throwing it as it landed in the man's arm causing him to drop the gun and Bucky threw a punch with his the metal arm knocking him out. Just then the shield spun passed back him knocking down another armed guard. Sam flew in and grabbed the shield as he looked around. "Talk to me Annie,"
"Patience is a venture." Annie answered as Bucky sighed looking around hearing more people were coming.
"I've mapped out two escape routes." Sam added pulling up the map. Bucky reached for the shield and tossed it at an oncoming guard and caught the shield holding it. Sam let his wings expand as gun fire hit them while he stood there. Bucky jumped in the air throwing the shield again hitting the guy, caught the shield and handed it back to Sam. "Ten seconds before system shut down."
"Done," Annie grabbed the USB drive and got up and went to the boys. "Should we just empty out the base?"
"Already called in for the clean up crew." Sam answered as Annie shot out the red stunner to a man causing him to go limp. Bucky ran to another man and dropped kicked him causing him to fly back hard.
"Eto Zimniy Soldat!" Another man yelled out.
"They're still afraid of the Winter Solider." Annie mentioned and Sam nodded.
"Damn right they are." Bucky muttered to himself as he took on another guard while Annie and Sam joined in. It wasn't much of a fair fight. But they got what they came for.
Washington D.C.
A man in a suit sat across from Bucky, Sam and Annie as there were a few folders on the table. Next to the man sat Rhodey.
"There's a lot of encryption but we'll see what is found." Senator Ross looked through the files and set them down. He then looked to the three and there was still a sense of mistrust. Sam helped Bucky escape and went against the Accords. While everything had been cleared for the both of them because of their help with the Blip it didn't mean Ross was comfortable. Ross has only known Annie for a brief moment but she was already proving herself that she was much like Natasha and that worried him, she could flip sides as needed to keep herself safe.
"Nice work." Rhodey complemented them. "Since you three helped with the Flag Smashers HYDRA has popped up on the radar again."
"It's the serum, they want it." Bucky confirmed. "And as much as I hate to say it but the bombing of the Super Soldiers before getting to the Raft and Zemo killing Nagal was a good thing."
"Breaking Zemo out of prison nearly landed you two back in prison, if he hadn't proven useful and the Wakandans vouching for you," Ross started.
"Give us a break Ross." Sam jumped in. "I know you don't trust us especially the Terminator but we're doing the best we can." He finished as Bucky sat there staring Ross down. "Let us know if there's anything useful that we already don't know in those documents." Sam stood up with Bucky and Annie following suit.
"Will do." Rhodey stated holding out his hand shaking theirs while Ross continued to sit there.
Louisiana
Annie and Bucky had moved to Louisiana to help Sam with his training and for change in scenery. Louisiana was different especially the weather, it was always hot. Also, AJ and Cass loved Bucky and Annie so whenever they were at the Wilson's it was always fun. Bucky became more like an uncle to them. Annie and Bucky were in their apartment, they moved in together back in Baltimore before the Flag Smashers situation in New York. It was a bit of an unconscious decision as it just happened. But now, they were both on the lease, both inhabiting one place. It all felt natural looking back. They were going to get ready to try the new restaurant Annie had suggested but ended up somewhere else.
Annie was moaning his name and it wasn't Bucky. She found when she called him James while they had sex it did something to him. Of course she would call him Bucky but when it was James it was a whole other level pleasure. Bucky was on the edge about to lose himself as he rocked inside of her. If she calls out to him again then it was over. Annie pulled him closer while running her fingers through his hair, digging her nails into his shoulders and raking them down his back. If he ever went out shirtless and people saw these marks they'd think a wild animal got to him. Sex as a Super Soldier intensified more sensations that he hadn't known he could feel. And Annie being at peak endurance these days they both can feel and do a lot.
"James…" She let out and that was it, he felt her already quivering and he let go as well releasing at the same time. Their heavy breathing continued even though they had finished. Annie swallowed hard trying to catch her breath as Bucky rolled off of her breathing just as heavy. He was even seeing stars at the moment. "We're going to miss our reservations." Annie mentioned and Bucky let out a chuckle and smiled looking over to her. She looked to his blue eyes seeing happiness in them. Sam even told her Bucky was happy, he didn't stare intensely as much, his shoulders were not tense, he laughed at jokes, he was lighter. She knew some of it was because of her but Bucky was getting his second chance. Now it was time to get ready for a date night.
Bucky checked his motorcycle as Annie left the apartment locking up. It was going to be a nice night so the motorcycle seemed appropriate. Bucky got on and revved the motor as Annie jumped on and they were off. Tomorrow they'll go to the Wislon's place and it was going to be a surprise. Sarah, Cass and AJ didn't know that they were home. Annie and Bucky were free agents and did other work within the government so even if Sam was gone it didn't always mean that they were together. Sam was making sure anything that came back as HYRDA, potential HYRDA or the Red Room he was there to help them.
The last mission was reconnaissance as they managed to find an old HYDRA base. It was old because it yet to find enough people to guard it. The information gathered could be a hit or a miss. Bucky was hoping there was nothing and that HYRDA could never come back but he had to be ready. For now he wasn't going to think about it because he was going on a date and he liked those. Sam was at the big house and loved looking at the boat as it was fixed up. The boat was in great shape these days and he may take it out on the water just to be at ease. For now though he was welding something for Sarah for one of her projects. As she was over site she heard a car coming and looked up. She had a smile seeing that it was Annie and Bucky. Sam knew they were coming but he wanted to surprise them. Sarah came over to them to hug them with a big smile.
"AJ! Cass!" Sam called to his nephews.
"So good to see you guys," Sarah greeted them. "You need to see the boat," She suggested as AJ and Cass came out and nearly knocked over Bucky and Annie as they hugged them. Sam smiled watching this, it was his family and made him want to protect this world even more than ever. Sam joined up giving his friends a hug welcoming them.
The kitchen was full of hustle and bustle as AJ set the table, Annie was with Sarah prepping the dinner. Sam started to take out food with Bucky helping. They all gathered around and started to load their plates and passing the food around.
"Uncle Bucky," Cass started and Bucky liked that. "Can we go on the three wheeler?"
"Absolutely not," Sarah stopped Bucky from saying yes.
"Why not?" Bucky asked as he tasted the potatoes and as always they were delicious but he wanted them smothered in the gravy as he poured a bunch over them.
"Want to tell them?" Sarah suggested and Cass sighed.
"I took it out and fell and it nearly crashed into the tree." Cass fessed up and Annie smiled.
"Oh, it crashed into the tree, there was no nearly." Sarah corrected the statement.
"But, uncle Bucky will be driving it so…it won't crash." AJ jumped in and Sarah shook her head knowing her sons were trying.
"First off," Sam started. "Only adults should be driving that thing so when you turn 18 then maybe," Sam took a sip of the lemonade.
"This is real lemonade?" Bucky asked as he finished sipping his and Sarah nodded. Bucky never had sweet tea before, growing up in Brooklyn there was no such thing. Sweet tea opened up so much more options out there. In fact Bucky has had so much good food since coming back let alone drinks. And now he was tasting real homemade lemonade? "I'm moving in." He muttered and Annie smiled.
"So, can we go after dinner?" Cass asked and Sarah knew with Bucky and Annie here she wouldn't be able to say no.
"If you clean up then yes." Sarah listed her terms.
"Yes!" Both boys high fived each other.
"But only until sunset, don't want you guys out there in the dark." Sarah added and Bucky nodded.
Outside Bucky sat on the three wheeler as he backed it out of the shed. Cass didn't damage it too much but you can see the skid marks against the red paint. He clicked it over so the engine kicked in. AJ and Cass jumped on the back ready.
"Stay on the property!" Sarah yelled over the engine giving Bucky instructions. "And do not let them drive it!" She added but Bucky's smirk meant there were no guarantees. "Bucky?" Sarah asked as Bucky started to drive off. "Sargent Barnes!" Sarah yelled but the three were off. Sam stood next to his sister with a smirk too. She then punched his arm and headed off. It was just now Sam and Annie standing there hearing the engine disappear in the woods. Sam put his arm around Annie pulling her in and they headed back to the house.
The boat was still docked but Sam, Bucky and Annie were at the bow of the boat enjoying the warm night. Sarah came in meaning the young boys were in bed as she passed out some beers to the grown boys. She handed Annie a glass of wine as she brought a bottle for her and would join her. Annie and Sarah clicked glasses together as did Sam and Bucky did with their bottles.
"Tell me you guys will be staying home for a bit." Sarah missed them, it was nice to expand the family.
"Hope so." Bucky was being honest. He wanted a break and just be here on the property, on the boat, in town or at the apartment and just be boring, boring can be nice.
"Anything classified that we can't talk about?" Sarah asked knowing somethings can't be talked about.
"Stole some files, see what they have, go from there." Annie answered sipping her wine. She then looked over to Sarah. Sarah worried for them, all three of them. Sarah and Annie had gotten close and talked often. Sarah knew quite a bit of Annie's past and what these new missions were. She also knew a lot about Bucky but in the end none of what Annie and Bucky did was their fault. "But we don't want to eat and run." Meaning Annie wanted a break too.
"It's what you live for right?" Sarah knew what they do is important. It also meant at a moments noticed they would be gone. For now it was time to enjoy the starry warm night.
The apartment was quiet except for the clock ticking away. Annie was asleep as Bucky sat at their little dining table sorting through the bills. Annie tried to sign them up for autopay but Bucky being old fashion wanted paper bills and pay with checks. He was finishing up with the last of the bills. The apartment had real pictures of them sprawled about. The one close to him on a small side table was them in the Keys. They were doing things they always wanted. But he sat in the dark quiet thinking. So far these HYDRA missions weren't turning anything up but deep down he felt something was coming. He felt this intense fear in his gut that continued to warn him. Part of him wanted to tell Sam and Annie to just let it go and say HYRDA is dead. He wanted to say that and do the missions on his own but he knew that wouldn't be allowed.
But at the same time he wanted to retire. He has a small family here, two nephews when he thought about it, Sam was becoming like a brother to him and then there's Annie. He was in love and he even went back to thinking about that moment when he realized he loved her.
'Annie put down a card quickly as did Bucky. Bucky knew how to play card games but UNO was new to him.
"No!" Bucky yelled as Annie put down a reverse card, he almost had it, he could have won. Annie held a huge smile and laughed seeing the end of that round. Bucky grabbed his beer bottle and took a sip knowing it was getting late and they should turn in. The necklace she wore with the piece of the Winter Solider star hung around her neck as Annie started to clean up. Bucky finished the beer as Annie took the empty bottle and headed to the kitchen. Bucky got up and followed her and just stood there for a moment.
"Everything ok?" She asked a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
"I love you." He heard it come from his mouth even though he wanted to keep it in his head. It came out and he wasn't sure if she would reciprocate. Annie then let a smile come across her face.
"You love me?" She asked just to be sure she heard correctly. Bucky nodded as Annie walked over to him to hug him. She rested her chin on his shoulder as he pulled her in. "I love you." It was shaking whisper but he could feel she had keeping it in for a while now. But to know how she felt lifted a lot of stress. She pulled away to kiss him and he accepted.
Bucky smiled a little to himself and got up and walked the little apartment making sure everything was good, the windows and the doors locked. Once he completed his sweep he went to the couch and checked under it, one rifle was in its case ready to go. Bucky headed to the room seeing Annie was asleep and he quickly checked under their bed seeing the second rifle case. Everything was where it needs to be. But there was one more thing to check. He went to the nightstand on his side to the bottom drawer and opened it. He reached for something and opened up a small compartment and reached for a small box. He opened the box and the small diamond ring was there. He bought that ring the day after he said he loved her. He was now just waiting for the right moment and time. For now, he put it away for safe keeping.
Bucky then crawled into bed and Annie rolled over to cuddle with him and he pulled her closer. The nightmares were fading these days and the nights were less sleepless. But it didn't mean the nightmares hadn't all disappeared even for Annie. But at least now they had each other to help through the bad days and the lonely nights. It was all the more reason for Bucky to keep Sam and Annie away from HYDRA. Bucky let out a sigh closing his eyes waiting for sleep to take him.
He was in fog almost a twilight state as the cold air disappeared. He could hear faint talking and his vision was nothing more than a blur. He tried blinking but felt himself being dragged. His feet could barely move as he was being hauled away. The lights were low but bright at the same time. He felt himself being thrown down in a chair as the blurry figures started to strap him down. The faint noises of buttons being clicked and machines running started. Then something attached to his head and face and the pain started. He let out screams of pain as he felt shocks of pain and his mind going from a fog to intense heat. He could see small fragmented images but they would come and so quick he could never see what they were. One was of a red and blue colors shaped into a disc but it jumped and disappeared.
As the shocks of pain started to get worse the grip of the machine let go of his head a face but he began to shake.
"Toska," A man started. "Rzhavyy, pech, rassvet," He continued and the fog started to clear, the pounding went away. "Semnadtsat, dobrokachestvenny, devyat, vozvrashcheniye, domoy, odin," His mind started to clear with nothing. "Gruzovoy vagon." His head bowed as another man stood before him. "Dobroye utro Zimniy Soldat." The man greeted.
"Gotov vypolnit." The Winter Solider responded as he was activated and ready.
Bucky was waking up feeling nearly paralyzed.
"Bucky?" It was a faint and distanced voice.
"Bucky!" He could hear his voice and looked over seeing Steve coming for him. "Hang on!" Bucky began to move while holding onto the small bar as the train sped on the tracked in the snow. Steve then reached out. "Grab my hand!" Bucky reached out but the metal bar broke. Steve lunged even more as Bucky reached as far as he could but the bar broke causing Bucky to fall.
"Bucky!' It jolted him out out of sleep. He felt sweaty, cold and weak. He looked up seeing a shape of a person. His vision cleared but the older man in those rounded glasses with that termite grin smiled at him.
Bucky shot up looking around the room. The sun fought it's way in through the blinds as he looked around. He was in his apartment in his own bed. But the sweat dripped from him, fear made him shake as he sat on the side of the bed. His senses came back as he could smell coffee and maybe eggs. He needed to compose himself before seeing Annie but she might have heard him. Bucky got up and washed up quickly trying to settle him in the here and now.
Annie set the table cloth, it was mostly for Bucky, it reminded him of his more innocent days. She then placed the doilies out and then followed the plates, cups and silverware. As she set the table she looked around the place. The apartment itself was a mix of modern and the 1930s/1940s. It actually didn't clash if anything it managed to complement each other surprisingly. Annie even surprised him with an old fashion rotator phone, it didn't work but it was nice and it made him happy. The compromise though with some of that type of decor was no wallpaper, Annie did not want wallpaper but the type of plates and bowls were from that era. You can find all kinds of things at the thrift shop.
As she placed the food on the table she heard something and she stopped what she was doing. It was a gagging noise and Annie headed to their room seeing the bathroom light was on. She went to the bathroom seeing Bucky hovering over the toilet and Annie jumped into action. She reached for a washcloth and started run lukewarm water on it. Bucky flushed the toilet as he limped to a seated position. Annie got to the floor and started to dab his face with the wash cloth.
"I'm sorry," he muttered as he placed his hand on his head. It must have been a bad dream for him to vomit. Annie didn't respond as she continued to clean him up. Bucky limped into her embrace and he held onto her. She pulled away placing both hands on his cheeks.
"I'm here." She assured him and he nodded. He hated her seeing him like this but it was PTSD. Annie pulled him closer and put the washcloth over his forehead. He was coming around and would talk to her about the dream when ready. For now he felt safe in her arms feeling no judgement and the willingness to sit there on the bathroom floor until he was ready. "Coffee's ready though." She tried to lighten the mood and he let a small chuckle break through.
Bucky explained to Annie what he saw in the dream. Being activated as the Winter Soldier isn't what sent him it seeing Arnim Zola, he hasn't dreamed or even really thought of Zola in a long time. Bucky himself only had a few fears these days, one was loneliness the other was falling but he has managed to overcome that. His biggest fear now was losing Annie and Sam, the boys too. But Zola released some deep fear in him.
Annie only knew of Zola through documents from WWII and what S.H.I.E.L.D had. He was derange and a psychopath and Annie never wanted to meet him. Zola died a long time ago but put a lot of what has happened into this world into motion. Annie had a fear of a few people too. The biggest one was Dreykov himself. He would be there during training and he would kill Widows while in training if he felt the need to. He did other things to Widows to and she was one of them. Both suffered abuse in many different ways than one.
As Bucky talked about his latest nightmare the phone started to buzz. Annie signed not wanting to break the conversation but it was Rhodey on the phone.
"Juniper?" Rhodey answered on speaker and Bucky smiled a little. It was still neat to know John's family. But at the same time, on rare occasions Bucky found it odd that Annie could be his granddaughter, that he was well over half Annie's age. But it didn't matter who he was with, he could be anyone's grandfather. But if he was going to be with someone, it fate and destiny was a real thing Annie was the perfect choice.
"Hey, Rhodey," Annie greeted.
"Figure I'd call your phone, don't think the bionic man is completely comfortable with smart phones." Rhodey started.
"I heard that." Bucky made sure Rhodey knew he was around.
"Morning, Barnes," Rhodey then sighed. "How quick can you both get here to D.C?"
"Depends on the flights." Annie answered as she picked up her phone and started to search for the next flights out to the D.C. "What's up?"
"We found some interesting things on that drive you gave us." Rhodey started. "I mean…it's best to get here in person while Banner puts it together.
"The Hulk is with you?" Annie asked sounding a little excited. Of all the Avengers she's met so far it's been Steve, Natasha, of course Sam and Rhodey.
"He'll sign an autograph for you when you get here." Rhodey added. "Cap is on his way too."
"See everyone tonight." Annie added as she finished booking the flight.
"See you guys soon." Rhodey then hung up as Annie sighed.
"Why am I nervous about what was found?" Annie asked as she looked to Bucky. "S.H.I.E.L.D has everything on HYRDA and I've seen it," Bucky nodded meaning it was something missed, something hidden. Bucky leaned forwards thinking what else could there be. Maybe it's a secret base or more people have been identified as HYDRA. Just then Bucky's phone went off and he answered it.
"Hey Sam," Bucky greeted.
"Rhodey get to you yet?" Sam asked on speaker.
"Yup, three o'clock flight is booked, I got you an aisle seat." Annie answered.
"Any indication on what was found?" Sam asked as Bucky shook his head as he got up and started to clean table up.
"No." Bucky answered knowing Sam nodded over the phone. "I'll swing by soon and we'll leave." Sam started and then someone else joined in. "You're going to do Captain America stuff?" It was AJ and that made both Annie and Bucky smile. "That or bowling." Sam answered."See you soon." Bucky hung up as he stood before the sink. He then felt Annie wrap her arms around his waist and resting her head on his back making sure he stays relax.
"It'll be a bit before he gets here," Annie started. "Want to watch and episode of Supernatural?" She then felt Bucky shrug meaning sure. He turned around wanting an embrace and wanted to stay boring for a little while longer.
A/N: Should I keep going? I hope you like it so far. Please, review and comment. Thank you for reading.
