Her hand twitched as she resisted the urge to celebrate. She drew in a shaky breath to contain her joy and closed her eyes to calm herself. She reached inward, searching for serenity, but could not find it. There was something wrong with this supposedly perfect picture. Technically speaking, Vegeta had just proposed to her, and although his manner was somewhat crude, doubted she should expect anything better from him. But despite the fact that she had gotten what she had originally asked for, she knew that she had not won entirely.
Something was wrong.
Vegeta stared at her impatiently while she stood still. It felt like a dream come true, that the Saiyan prince had finally given in to her appeal after months of incessant pleading, but what exactly had made Vegeta change his mind?
"Convince me," she articulated when she finally opened her turquoise eyes, her tone uncharacteristically void of emotion.
Shocked was not an adequate enough word to describe Vegeta's feelings. "What?" -the hell? He had just given in to the woman and now she wanted him to waste his time convincing her to go through with what she had asked for to begin with? What kind of a freak was she?
She shrugged. "You had your chance," she explained. "I spent ages trying to get you to agree and you crushed me every time." She locked her eyes with his. "I gave up, Vegeta," she whispered. "And now that I've found an alternative, give me one good reason why I should even consider you again."
"You should be honoured that I am stooping so low," he growled. It would have been intimidating had she not developed an immunity to his ill-temper long ago.
She snorted at his statement, and his expression darkened at her disrespect. "Well, I'm not honoured, Prince Vegeta. In fact, I think you should be thrilled that I was willing to settle for you," she countered.
She did not wait for his rebuttal. "And by the way," she inquired bitterly, "Why are you stooping so low?"
He drew a blank.
She raised an eyebrow, and her patronizing expression forced him to fumble for an explanation. "I am the father of your son," he declared confidently, although he knew full well that it was merely a reiteration of what she had been ranting all year.
Her eyes narrowed darkly. "Not good enough. You were Trunks' father yesterday and the day before that and the last two months, and well, pretty much all throughout the pregnancy. So tell me, what changed?"
Silence greeted her.
Vegeta blinked. For the first time in his life, he was stumped.
She laughed a husky, mirthless laugh. She had thought that Vegeta would be irked by the thought of her being with someone else, but upon seeing his expression, she knew that she had been wrong. Obviously, he held no degree of affection for her. She should have known that the prospect of marrying for love was too good to be true.
"Admit it," she challenged. "You're just scared of the thought of having to battle two Gokus instead of one."
He scoffed, rejecting her guess easily. "How dare you insinuate that something like that would be a problem for me?"
"So go on, tell me why," she demanded hotly.
The only reaction to her interrogation was a light blush that proceeded to stain the fuming Saiyan prince's cheeks as he averted his gaze.
"Oh my god!" Bulma screeched, her eyes widening with misunderstanding. "You want him for yourself, don't you?"
