Prologue
A young girl and her parents were out to dinner at a restaurant enjoying a meal together. Everyone was dressed in nice clothes and eating their food along with drinking their drink of choice. The trio then finished their meals and tipped the waiter and paid their bill. They then got up from their table.
"Thank you, mom and dad, for the meal," the young girl said.
Her mother smiled ": You're welcome, dear" she replied as the family begins to walk through the restaurant towards its front doors. They felt the brisk air of the night sky on their bodies as they watched cars come and go from the restaurant parking lot. Carefully the family steps off the sidewalk and onto the black pavement of the parking lot. While her parents were ahead of her the young girl tried to keep up as best, she could.
Suddenly she was bathed in light as the headlights from the car came into view at a high rate of speed. They sent her flying through the air and barrel rolling onto the ground. Her parents then rushed over to their daughter's side, a mixture of panic and horror etched across their faces.
She could see her father pull out his cell phone and dial 911 and could hear her father shouting for an ambulance to come to their location right now as they stayed with their daughter. Several minutes passed until sirens could be heard as the medical vehicle pulled into the parking lot. Two people wearing medical uniforms came out of either side of the front of the ambulance and rushed around to the back of the ambulance and pulled a stretcher out and carefully lifted the girl onto the stretcher and then loaded her into the ambulance. Due to the pain, the young girl passed out.
Sometime later the girl woke up with her eyes fluttering open "Ugh, where am I?" she thought to herself. She could hear beeping and saw that she was hooked up to a machine. "Am I in a hospital? She wondered. She then looked over and saw her parents and asked "Mom, Dad what am I doing here?"
She could see the relieved looks on the faces of her parents.
"Oh, honey she's awake" she heard her mother say with happiness in her voice.
"This is wonderful!" her father replied.
The girl then tried to move her body, but sharp sudden pains shot through her entire body and forced her to lie back down on the bed. Then there was a knock on the door.
"Come in" the girl's father loudly said. The room door then opened, and the doctor walked into the room with a serious look on his face. "Can I speak to you two outside?" asked the doctor.
The girl's parents nodded and followed the doctor out of the room and closed the door behind them.
"What is it doctor?" The girl's mother asked with worry evident in her voice.
The doctor began "While your daughter's injuries will heal. Her spine is damaged beyond repair, so she'll be paralyzed for the rest of her life" the doctor said.
"Are you sure?" the girl's father asked in concern. However, the doctor just nodded solemnly. "I'm sorry we've done all that we could do. Please excuse me" said the doctor as he walked away. Leaving the parents alone, they stood in front of the door shocked at what they had just heard.
They turned to face the door and open it to walk back into the room to be with their daughter. The mother could not take it anymore and slumped into a nearby chair and began to cry.
"What's going on? I saw the doctor come into the room and then they walked out of the room. However, judging by mom's reaction I don't think it's good news" thought the daughter."
Then the girl's father then came closer to her bed. "Hey, the doctor said that you were going to make a full recovery but there is a complication" her father began then however he looked down in sadness before he finally spoke again.
"What kind of complications are you talking about dad?" the girl wondered in confusion.
"Unfortunately, the doctor said that you'll be paralyzed for the rest of your life." her father began.
"Paralyzed, you mean that I'll be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life?" The girl thought with a look of horror etched across her face.
Seeing her panic her father tried to calm her down by grabbing her hand and looked his daughter right in her eyes. "Look I know it'll be a big adjustment, but we'll get through it like always" the girl's father said.
"That's right your father and I will do our best to take care of you" added the girl's mother.
The girl thought about what her parents had said, imagining what her future would look like.
She imagined that she was living her life at homes with her parents in a wheelchair, struggling to do even the most basic tasks like bathing without her parents help. It mortified her, to be a burden to her parents and taking over every facet of their lives.
"No! I can't do that to them. I don't want to be a burden to them. To take away their freedom is not something I want to do" the girl thought to herself.
Suddenly the girl felt her chest begin to tighten in pain. Then the machine that she was hooked up to begin to beep loudly. She could see the panic looks on the faces of her parents as they tried to call for a doctor to help their daughter.
The pain in her chest grew more intense and the beeping of the machine grow louder. She then felt her eyes get heavy as she stared up at the lights of the hospital room,
"I feel sleepy all of a sudden and the lights feel brighter. I just have one wish. I would like a like a new body" the girl wished.
Then her eyes closed and darkness overcame her.
