I don't know how I came up with this idea. I remember thinking about it, and then I decided it would be a cool superpower. Then I decided to stick it into MHA.
Have fun reading this I guess…
My story started when I burned through the atmosphere of the earth at over 50km per second. I don't remember much except for watching the ground approach at breakneck speeds. I also noticed the rocky surroundings protecting my icy core.
Then, the man came. I was watching as I was about to impact the ground, but a hulking figure of a man with blonde hair leapt up and smashed my stony refuge to pieces, yelling something along the lines of "Detroit Smash!" Then, before I knew it, I wasn't flying down anymore, I was flying sideways, trailing bits of water, stone, and ice.
The impact wasn't fun, to say the least, it hurt like hell, and made a sizeable crater in the ground. The air was filled with small, white flakes, and my surroundings were filled with massive, green structures that stretched into the sky and beyond.
I was curious to explore my surroundings, but I couldn't do anything except observe from my spot in the crater. I reached out towards the edge of the crater and A strange feeling overcame me. I felt my body stretching. It felt strange but it was getting me towards the edge.
When I felt I couldn't stretch anymore, I simply let go of the feeling and let the back half snap towards the front. After repeating this process a few times, I reached the slope. I tried stretching up the slope, but I simply slipped down. I tried a few more times, but nothing worked.
I was contemplating giving up my glorious quest when I noticed the white flakes starting to pile up in my crater hole. They seemed… familiar. When one landed on me, it felt as if my body had extended. I reached out again and noticed the flake stretched along with the rest of me. Interesting…
I shifted around a bit, collecting more of these small flakes until it felt my body had doubled in size. Reaching up, I tried again to reach the edge. I was closer, but still so far. Suddenly, in one of my attempts, I focused on a piece of my body, made entirely of the white flakes and it managed to stick.
I focused again and it compressed and squished, launching me off the wall. It seemed I could freely change the texture of my body parts. Useful. I tried again, this time using two limbs made of the white flakes. I made it so that both had as high friction and stickiness as possible and started to climb.
The crater walls were over twenty times my height, and too many times I had lost my grip on the walls, but after many attempts, I had bested the challenge and could finally get a good look at my surroundings. Using these two new limbs, I could use a technique like climbing, but horizontal to wander around. I noticed a flat area with some reflective material, and I dashed over to it. Like the white flakes, this material felt familiar, and it felt as if I could manipulate it as well.
I reached out to touch it when I noticed something in the reflection of the material. It was… me. I stared at myself. I looked at the two limbs I had created, and it was a botched job, to say the least. The structural integrity of the sticks I had called limbs could be shattered with a simple fall, and the high friction ends of the limbs were uneven and rough.
I used the reflection to fix up my limbs. Then I noticed the object on top of the limbs. It looked to be the same colour as the material, but brighter and bluer. It also seemed to emanate a strange blueish glow. It was cube-shaped and looked very delicate. I suppose that was… me. My core. The very thing that allowed me to think and exist.
I continued reaching out and touched the material and felt a massive surge of power rush through me. In my excitement, I tried controlling the entire mass like how I did with the white flakes. Then everything just crumbled. My limbs collapsed, and my control over the mass was lost. Huh.
Fortunately, I was on top of the material, so I could try again. However, the same result. I simply lost control before anything happened. Perhaps I was setting my sights too high. I controlled a smaller portion of the mass, and a sizeable chunk under me morphed back into the limbs.
I walked away from the new material, making a mental note to not control too much at once. I observed the massive structures of green around me. They seemed to have a wooden pole at the centre, and the pole was surrounded by flat green sheets. Not too exciting, I felt no control when I touched it.
I turned and noticed another structure, but this one was brown and oddly shaped. I wandered the perimeter of the building and noticed there was a hole in one of its walls. Well, not exactly a hole, but it seemed like one of the walls was misplaced which left an opening.
On the way in, I scooped up more white flakes, which I created a protective barrier around my core with. For some reason, even though my core was covered, I could still see out. Upon entering, I noticed a large box with a wall like the one of which I had entered, it had a strange protrusion shaped like a hook.
Then, I heard thudding. Loud thumping from behind me. Out of an instinctual fear within me, I shuffled as fast as I could and hid behind the box. A massive figure walked through the opening in the wall, and… moved the wall closed? That didn't make any sense! He had brought a strange, clear liquid, and he opened the wall of the box.
I observed as he put it inside the box. Then, when he turned to leave and shut the door, I leapt inside the box. In hindsight, I don't know why I did that. The wall was closed, and I was trapped inside the box. I tried pounding on the wall with my limbs, but it wouldn't open. I was very much trapped with no way out. With nothing to do… I just waited.
And waited…
And waited…
Then, bored out of my mind, I decided to investigate the strange liquid he had put in. When I climbed the inner walls of the box, I discovered something very peculiar. The liquid had turned into the flat material I had seen outside! When I touched it, I had full control over it, confirming it had indeed been transformed.
I used it to double my body size, and thankfully I didn't crumble to pieces. Now, I had a bit more material to work with, and I decided to do some experimentation to figure out the extent of my abilities.
After a while, it seemed like I could make my material change colour as well as texture, which was an interesting ability, but not very useful in my situation. Without warning, the wall of the box opened once more, and there stood the massive figure, staring at me. The figure let out a high-pitched sound and dropped the container filled with the liquid before taking off at full speed.
I stared at the liquid on the ground. It felt familiar, but when I touched it, I had no control over it. Suddenly, my limbs started to transform into this liquid! I pulled away, the liquid dripping from my body. That wasn't good. Then I remembered, when the liquid was placed inside the mysterious box, it turned back into the material I could control.
I used the material to create a container of sorts and scooped up as much liquid as I could before leaping inside the still-open box. And I waited…
And waited…
And waited…
The process was gradual, but eventually, the liquid turned into more of the material. I gathered it up in my body and decided to call this my home base since the other figure had abandoned it. At this stage, I was large enough to open and close the wall freely with enough effort, so I left to gather more white flakes.
I found my upper limit to be around 10 times the size of my core before my body crumbled, so I decided to call it a day and wander a bit more. My body was now shaped like a sphere stuck on top of my limbs. After aimlessly walking for a bit, I found another building, this one had a clear slab alongside the wooden poles stacked on top of each other.
I climbed up the poles and took a glance inside. Within the structure, were many figures like the person who had run away from me, but much smaller. There was a white slab on the board, that had strange writing on it, and the figures inside were speaking strange words. I didn't have much else to do, so I just listened.
And this was my life for the next 3 months. Gather new flakes, listen to the figures inside, and return to the box when I felt like it. I found over the next 3 months, I could understand some of the words that the figures were saying, and I also figured out how to improve my control by practising focusing on more of the material at one time.
Then, the 3 months after, something strange was happening. The white flakes (which I now knew as "snow") slowly ceased to fall, and the massive slab of the material (which I now knew as "ice") started to turn into the strange liquid ("water"). In addition, I was also transforming into water, and I had to make more frequent trips to the box.
The three months after that were pure torture. The glowing ball in the sky ("sun") which I had observed when I was bored, started to melt me into water! I had to remain inside the box ("freezer") for most of the time. During this time, I learnt I was made from ice, and the figures weren't as they didn't mind the sun.
Once, during the months, I had failed to notice myself melting when I was sitting at the windowsill, and I was reduced to my core, which hadn't melted strangely. Perhaps it was a special type of ice? Fortunately, I had backup reserves of ice within the freezer, but it was a pain to return without any of my limbs ("legs")
After surviving five years, I learned to read and understand most of their language, but I couldn't speak it, as I had no vocal cords. During winter, I decided to set out, and find something new.
I had increased my capacity to around 15 times my size of total control and figured out how to create tank treads and wheels, which I could spin using a bit of concentration. With this method, I zipped through the trees in search of adventure.
When I noticed a car approaching my general location, I crumbled my treads and reduced myself back to the sphere on my legs, watching on carefully. A little girl stumbled out of the car and giggled. She had a spiky black ponytail and looked to be about the age of 4. "Now now Momo," A voice called out from inside the vehicle, "Don't get yourself hurt playing in the snow."
"I won't!" The girl seemingly called Momo replied. She jumped up and down in the snow and started making snowmen and the like. I sat, watching from behind the tree when she noticed me. However, instead of the usual fear I get from others, I was met with a pleasant curiosity.
"Oh! Who are you?" Momo asked
I just stared blankly at her as she ran up to me and stuck out her hand.
"I'm Momo! Do you want to be friends?"
I tentatively created a tentacle-like thing from snow and accepted the handshake. Momo's eyes were wide in wonder.
"Woah! That's so cool! Is that your quirk or something?"
Quirk? Oh yeah. I've heard of those. I didn't know how to communicate with her so I just stared at her.
She tilted her head in curiosity. "Can you talk?"
I remember seeing a gesture in the building which was a school called a shake. So I tried my best to shake my sphere on my head.
"Oh," Momo said, seemingly getting it. "That's a shame. Do you want to build a snowman?" I started at the strange thing she was gesturing at. It seemed to be two balls of snow stacked on top of each other. I could do that.
I moved over to a place that didn't have a snowman occupying the area and completely disassembled my structure, reducing myself to my core. Then, I used the snow around me to construct two spheres before ejecting myself out of the sphere and reconstructing myself. Momo just stood there in awe.
"Wow! You just created the best snowman ever!"
"Momo, time to go, your parents want you back at the hotel."
"Okay! Can we bring my new friend?"
"Friend?" A face stuck out of the window. It was a man dressed in a winter suit who looked very professional. "I'm sure your parents wouldn't mind."
"Yay! You're coming with me, friend!" Momo exclaimed, picking me up and pulling me into the car. I heard the engines start and the car start to drive away, leaving my old home in the snow.
"Do you have a name?" Momo asked shortly after the car started. A name? I never considered having one. I shook my head. "Do you want me to name you?" She asked. I nodded. It would be nice to have a name for once.
"Hmm…" Momo pondered. "I'm going to call you Hyokyu, which means ice ball!"
It was an uncreative name, but I can't really complain. Literally. I can't talk. After sitting in silence for a bit, I noticed the figure of Momo getting larger by the second. Then, I noticed water starting to drip, and the hot air blowing from the heater of the car.
I started panicking, tapping Momo frantically. I relocated my ice to create a pair of tentacles to gesture with. Once I had Momo's attention, I started wildly gesturing at myself and the puddle of water that was forming. Momo was continuing to grow into a massive giant from my perspective. Fortunately, she noticed and placed me to the side.
"Excuse me, sir, could you turn off the heater?"
"The heater? Aren't you cold Miss Yaoyarozu?"
"It's for Hyokyu! He's melting!"
At this stage, I was the size of a tennis ball, my core encapsulated in a protective coating made from the tentacles. Then, the rush of hot air stopped and the melting slowed.
"Ohh," Momo cooed, "you're so small now! Don't worry, I'll fix you with my quirk!"
She held out her arm and rolled up a sleeve. Then, she closed her eyes and began to concentrate, muttering to herself.
"Ice is water, water is h2o"
Suddenly, her skin started to glow and many cubes of ice popped out, which I happily fused with.
"Don't overdo it Miss Yaoyorozu. You might pass out" The butler warned.
Once the car rolled to a stop, Momo scooped me up in her arms and leapt out of the car. "This is my parents' hotel!" She exclaimed happily. She brought me into a strange room where I was hit with a blast from a heater again.
"Ah, Momo. Your parents are waiting for you on the top floor." Momo nodded and went into an elevator, creating more ice for me. The elevator slowed to a halt, and Momo stepped out. I saw two larger figures, bent over a computer and a mess of papers. " Momo! You're back! Who's your friend?" The man looked up and smiled.
"This is Hyokyu! I met him in the snow!"
I jumped out of Momo's arms and offered the man a handshake, well, a very cold tentacle shake.
"Haha! He's very cute." The man said, accepting the handshake. "I'm Mr Yaoyorozu. Pleased to meet you."
"Can he stay?" Momo asked
The man looked at the woman, who nodded. "I don't see why not."
Momo cheered and brought me into a hug. It felt weird but comforting. "We'll move a freezer into your room, he can stay there while we're in Hokkaido"
Momo nodded and smiled at me. "We're going to be best friends!" She said.
After the freezer was moved in, I sat inside and chilled there, watching Momo colour in a book through the clear glass door. She turned and asked. "You look bored. Do you want something to do?" She was right. I was bored. I looked around the room for something I might enjoy and noticed a primary school maths book and guide. I pointed at them with a tentacle and Momo giggled.
"But those are boring! Are you sure?" I nodded in confirmation. She handed me a pencil and the two books, which I started to attack. Learning was fun to me, it had a strange appeal to it.
After a few months, elementary school maths had been conquered and we were returning to a place called Shizuoka. Momo had been commenting on how I was a fast learner after handing me the year 6 Japanese curriculum.
Her parents owned a private jet which they used to take me, Momo, and the freezer back to Shizuoka for a proper education for Momo, and so I could be her friend there. It would be the start of a new life for me.
So much better than hiding in a freezer all day.
