The Sorting Hat had put them all in Gryffindor. All of them but Severus. When his name was called he caught a glimpse of the Slytherin table. One particular girl had seemed stewed ever since Black had been called for Gryffindor, but the whole table seemed to be judging him as the perfect Slytherin candidate. "I can already see the perfect house for you. But it seems you don't feel quite the same" The hat said with mischief behind it's voice.
Severus pleaded with the hat. I can't be in Slytherin. I just can't- "Oh-ho, but isn't that right up your alley? Potions, dark magic, it's all in your blood! But I see something else…a true desire not to be there. You have two paths ahead of you. Your magic could become great, or you could become great. What is it you really want?"
I just want to protect Lily Evans. I know If I go to Slytherin, I can't. You can put me anywhere but Slytherin. No matter what, I know I can protect her so long as I don't do that. I've made my choice, I just want the chance to make sure…
"That's quite brave of you, even your mother's approval?" the sorting hat whispered to him with certainty. If it means she'll be safe, then I'd do anything.
The hall was filled with shocked faces as the hat yelled out "Gryffindor!" James Potter laughed along with Sirius Black, his words coming true. Lily Evan's smiled happily as her best friend took a seat beside her.
